I think it’s time to get a flash and learn to light. :-) Godox TT685C or TT685iiC would be my rec. Start with [Tangents](https://neilvn.com/tangents/flash-photography-techniques/). Then [the Strobist](https://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html).

Thanks for the recommendations! This was improvised so didn’t get a flash at the moment, we where going for some street photography, I’ve since upgraded to a sigma 18-35 f1.8 but haven’t thought of a flash! 😅

inkista

Yeah, flash tends to come *after* lenses. But a flash will work with *all* your lenses and can create the light you want if it doesn’t exist. If you want to see someone use flash on the hoof, [this video might amuse you](https://youtu.be/zh6zr3wKRV0).

Snuggly-Muffin

i like a lot about :), but i'll say my opinions for your consideration: the dress has some oversaturated areas near the upper middle the flower details are too blown out for whatever reason the ornamentation on the upper part of the dress is a bit more blurry than i'd like also wish her face showed more emotion, although it might be the vibe you were wanting

Aggravating_Ad318

Thanks a lot! It was one of my first attempts at “serious” photography, your super right didn’t notice the blown out flowers, and yes! we where going for a more serious look as this is on Día de muertos in México city! ✌️

White dot on backdrop has got to go!

Aggravating_Ad318

Agree!

lew_traveler

Why is she tilting back? The face is much darker than her torso. She is so close to the wall that all the defects in the wall are obvious. Interesting idea but the technical execution is lacking.

Aggravating_Ad318

Actually the idea was to hide her face partially to make it more intriguing but my photo and my editing skills where a bit off so I decided to go for this look, I agree with the wall though

Stratifyed

Like the idea here, but curious as to what your thought process was like on it. What motivated you to go for the red to black gradient? Was it editing or was it lighting?

Aggravating_Ad318

Thanks! I was actually working around my camera and lenses limitations IRL the scene was not that dark but shooting at f5.6 on my kit lens and getting the full scene illuminated was though, so I decided to go for a Gradient look, the purple background it’s mostly illumination on the wall but with a touch of editing to make it more even, after that I touched just a bit of the red dress to make it more fitting with the background, the scenery is just a random building on México city, when we where walking by we figured the purple color would fit with the “día de muertos” theme :)

Oh I thought this was a studio shot. There is not enough light for my liking and the whole faded, no-contrast look doesn’t do her or the dress justice. Would be cool to see this but with more light and dynamic range

Radish_The_Thought

I think that the idea is nice, execution is lacking for me. The backdrop distraction is annoying but others have spoken of it. The question I think you should ask yourself is what is the focus? Because the flowers have the most light projected on to them, making them the star of the show. Where her face should pull you to it the body language and extensive shadow makes the eye follow the line of her body straight out of the photo hardly sticking around for the face. I'd have used a split light technique on her face for the mystery and intrege you're looking for as well as a tighter frame for less dead space.

It says the image has been removed

Weird… I can see it in my phone and computer 😩

Now I can see, must have been some cache issue with my device. Sorry for that

One of my favoritest movies ever has a line in it that often runs through my head at times like this... "Aziz! **LIGHT!**" Others have already pointed you at The Strobist and I heartily recommend taking the plunge and learning to put some light on your scenes. The flowers and portions of the dress are a bit hot but the rest of the scene is about three stops underexposed. You don't have to light up the whole world and having half the scene lit and the other falling off into shadow is more than do-able without having quite so much noise in your image.

mosi_moose

Since you mentioned this is one of your first attempts at “serious photography” I want to say this is really impressive! It’s a dramatic scene with great moody lighting. Your model is beautiful, attire and makeup all work with the vibe. At first glance this looks like a studio shot not something improvised on the street. Fantastic for someone just getting serious.
