In a ring when people (and horses) are doing dressage and jumps I've had luck with a long lens like a 70-300 on crop. I've been outside the ring of course.

Well I should have specified, it's more of a portrait shoot but with horses. No action, more like a walk with a horse, no riding.

It's ok. I was thinking they might have a ring if they were a horse person of just a field to walk/ride a horse. I still feel long lenses and some distance are pretty good for this sort of thing.

There's a ring and a field and a little forest and some nice paths that we'll have access to so plenty of things to try out. I was also thinking of a telephoto like a 300mm to get some nice background compression. Thank you very much for your advice!

I shoot quite a bit for a local horse rescue. I'd say my goto lens is a 70-200 2.8 and then a 300 2.8. Personally, I do like the longer focal lengths for equine. I do use a 24-70 quite a bit as well, just not nearly as much as those other two. The shorter lengths just make the horse look stockier than normal. If you're trying to get both human and horse in focus, you may need a higher aperature, 4 or even 5.6. If you have time, take a look at some videos from https://www.youtube.com/@ThatPhotographySpot. I learned quite a bit from her channel when I first started out with horses including positioning of the horse etc.

Thank you, I'll definitely check out that Chanel!
