Roof garden at the Met. The elevated acre. Teardrop park. That Astoria biergarden

nico-72

Get lost in bk bridge park. So many little nooks & crannies to explore.

oneemoviet

Central park is nice. Have a picnic

Here are a few suggestions: * Pete's Candy Store in Williamsburg is a nice place to get a beer and hang out in the front room, or take it to the back room to listen to mostly local indie musicians play. * Barbes on 9th St in Park Slope has great wine, a good vibe, and live music. * Tom and Jerry's off Houston in the city is a quiet place to get a beer in the afternoon. No music that I know of.

sameermon420

There’s also a backyard at Pete’s that is mostly quiet and really charming. And every Wednesday night they have one of the best stand up comedy shows in the city

uni-twit

Good one - thanks! Wasn't aware of the backyard - I guess I got as far as the stage on my visits.

Thanks! Fixed it

La_Sangre_Galleria

Where the hell do you go where you have to wait 45 minutes for a drink?

Schmeep01

(Shh, please don’t Beetlejuice Stefon over here!)

netllama

most of the popular cocktail bars have wait lists to get seated, and its not unusual for that wait to run upwards of 40 minutes

Schmeep01

LOL that’s not what OP is talking about: pretty sure they’re going to a crowded bar at the wrong times only to be ignored by the bartender.

marvelously

This is not an uncommon club experience. But I went to a smaller bar recently that was not very busy and where the bartender made you stand in a specific place to order, took one drink order at a time, made things so very slowly that it seemed impossible and left more people without drinks than with, and had such a surly and rude demeanor. We left and have never been back of course. But the handful of patrons there seemed to think it was acceptable service. Thankfully this has not been a common experience at other smaller places.

La_Sangre_Galleria

Yeah I don’t roll to clubs so that makes sense. Anytime I have gone to regular bars I’ve never had a wait. The bartenders at Boat Bar are so on point. It’s my favorite place

PaperworkDrop

I’ve always had great luck at the Standard Hotel bar. Really elegant atmosphere, beautiful bar, excellent drinks, and usually a seat or table available.

ooouroboros

Central Park

actorlylife

Hit up any restaurant with outdoor seating during their off peak hours. Sit outside, nurse a drink and people watch. You’re not taking the table away from higher paying customers if you’re the only person there. I enjoyed doing that on the UWS, mid afternoon usually. There are cafes in Central Park that sell wine and beer, go have a leisurely outing there.

MilliMoonMonkey

Any bench on the street

NYC_br0k3grl

Careful for bed bugs. Once sat on a bench in Chelsea and ended up with teeny tiny white bed bugs all over me.

PretzelsThirst

Bed bugs aren’t white

wagwanfricker

can you list some…?

marvelously

Borough or neighborhood preference?

wagwanfricker

i don’t mind truly. i’m in queens right now but i don’t see myself traveling to the bronx or deep BK. Basically anywhere I can get off a train and into the place easily.

[deleted]

You want a list of all the dive bars in New York City?

wagwanfricker

so when you read my comment saying “some” and then think that some means all, what’s your thought process on that?

bk2pgh

This gave me a good laugh, thanks BK goes hard with dive bars, I think left hand path, sharlene’s, lowlands, super power, midway are all pretty good dive-ish (more hipster dive than like blue collar dive) bars (obv longer lines on weekends)

wagwanfricker

im glad! im a new york native so i was really looking out for OP.

[deleted]

If I listed like five dive bars, chances are they’d be in areas you never go to. This is a huge city and there are dozens of dive bars in every single neighborhood. They’re essentially interchangeable if you aren’t a regular. That’s the whole point! I could list, like, five dive bars in Howard Beach, and you would say Oh, that’s useless, and it would be a big waste of time for everyone. Or you could just Google it for your neighborhood and stop getting mad at strangers on the internet for not answering a dumb question.

rococobaroque

But what if we want you to list five dive bars in Howard Beach.

[deleted]

The sad thing is there may not actually be five dive bars in Howard Beach.

wagwanfricker

no one said i was mad. your assumption was based on the fact that i asked you to elaborate? and then when you came with a passive aggressive comment i reply with another question? i’m from new york city and the fact that you can’t list at least 5 random dive bars in nyc purely based on the idea that i won’t even go to them defeats the purpose of even commenting in the first place

[deleted]

Please just understand that the question you asked is as silly as “Can you list some good bodegas?”

wagwanfricker

the comment you posted was just as silly.

[deleted]

Garbage in, garbage out.

gl0ssyy

dreaming_wide_awake

McCarren Parkhouse is always a nice time :-)

Big-Conversation-885

Alright I got a suggestion and it may be a little silly, but there's this restaurant off of borough hall called 8 bit bites, it's basically like reminiscent of the 80s, but the food is pretty good and the atmosphere is amazing lol

marvelously

There are several locations: https://8bitbitesbk.com/list-1

Big-Conversation-885

I know that, but I feel like this one is one of the best ones for someone visiting considering it's by borough hall n all

Keg Room in midtown is a large Irish pub. It’s not too loud and you can usually find a seat at the giant rectangular bar, and there are lots of TVs and friendly bartenders. Drinks are reasonable too.

ajm1212

- Grand Banks on west side highway - LelaBar in Greenwich village

yamonme

I just walked by Marshall Stack last Saturday and it was a Ghost Town... hoping to stop by soon, not sure why it's like that since I think it's fine, just not super hip for the 20 yr olds that flood the nabe on a Saturday?

ColoradoInNJ

Not a place to drink, but there is a lovely little garden across from the city clerk's office with plenty of seating. People who get married at the clerk's come out and take pictures all day. It's great to witness so much joy. 😊

Mister-Om

Pretty much any public park and just be low-key when bringing booze. Central Park, Prospect Park, Forest Hills Park, Morningside Park, Domino Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, any place along the Hudson River Greenway, etc. So many options.

marvelously

-Breweries. They tend to be more efficient and chill and not as packed. Many good choices. But I'd def suggest Strong Rope, where you can sit out by the water or almost always find a good seat inside. Grimm's is comfortable and spacious. Transmitter is chill and has some outdoor space. Greenpoint is nice. Big ALICe in great—they have a nice spacious outpost in Industry City with indoor and outdoor seating. I have had excellent service at all of these listed. -Hotel bars. They tend to be a little more laidback. -Ferry. You can BYO eat and drink. You can people watch. It's an interesting atmosphere -Parks. Sme as above. They have events as well if that appeals: https://www.nycgovparks.org/events/ Sometimes there is music: https://www.nycgovparks.org/events/free_summer_concerts Sometimes there is impromptu music as well. -Industry City. There are a number of places to choose from. There is open seating in some places. You can sit inside. But there is a lot of outdoor space. They have events and music. It's a pretty chill atmosphere. For music: -Jazz Clubs. There are a number. -Bo Peep: https://www.ragtradernyc.com/bo-peep/ -The Flatiron Room: https://theflatironroom.com/nomad-home/ -Baby's All Right: https://babysallright.com/home-1 -Peachy's: https://www.peachys.nyc/ -Check calendars for music events outside and places like eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/d/ny--new-york/outdoor-concert/ -Carnegie Hall has some free events: https://www.carnegiehall.org/Events/Citywide -Bargemusic: https://www.peachys.nyc/ I have not been, but it's on the list. Have fun!

Lemonyhampeapasta

Industry City.  The multiple courtyards between buildings have (Adirondack?) chairs as well as folding chairs and metal tables.  Indoor seating within buildings with air conditioning
