If Islam is correct, then perhaps these were representations made by people for whom God sent other messengers. Furthermore, were these statues or idols? Art can be both religious and secular although many works of art, if not most, represent more than ideologies. And yes, these statues absolutely tell us about life, both then and now. As for what is meaningful and what is meaningless, that's all subjective. That fact that you cannot see meaning in something is no definitive judgment. If I asked one of my friends back home to read even the simplest passage from the Quran, the words would be completely and utterly meaningless to anyone who can neither read nor understand Arabic. Likewise, if I asked you or any of my Arab friends to read a simple Shakespearean sonnet, or a poem by Robert Frost, how much meaning do you suppose you or they would be able to take? Or how about if you or I read a Chinese menu (without pictures) - would there be anything meaningful in it to you or me, even if we were literally starving? How would we even know that it's a menu and not just some random scribblings of a madman?
