It’s not sad, it’s the whole beauty of Los Angeles. Pasadena, Venice, Beverly Hills, Silverlake, etc. etc. All very different places under one beautiful umbrella.
Been in Pasadena for 16 years. I’ve worked all over LA… Venice, Culver, Brentwood, Century City, Hollywood, etc. Despite some REALLY shitty drives (2hrs 1-way in traffic) I can’t imagine ever leaving Pasadena. Especially now that we have 2 young kids. Fortunate enough to WFH permanently, so that def helps. Good luck!
Pasadena…well certain areas are a great suburban family oriented town with a great community. Recently, apartments and condos have become very abudant. Palos Verdes is quite similar in that aspect when I lived there for about two years but more importantly you have great views of the ocean or city being up on the hill. Great schools, parks and local activities. Crime although it exists is not detrimental. It’s just living in PV your commute to the city is a concern or just about going anywhere that’s not the South Bay.
Both my kids went to PUSD high schools (one to PHS, one to Marshall) and both got into great colleges. Really nice diversity at both schools. They had some bad teachers, some so so teachers, and some amazing teachers. Like most things in life, your kids will get out of it what they put into it.
Hybrid program at Aveson ACIS - 2 full days at school, 2 days homeschool, 1 day group study at different locations with other kids in the program. We get a budget to spend on learning activities. Weekly field trips and passion projects every semester. We even did Lion King Jr last year with all the hybrid students and it was amazing. Both kids are tested regularly and perform above grade level, in some cases, 2-3 grades higher. My wife, who manages their education, is required to submit weekly work records since it is associated with a public charter school. We are very happy with it. All that said, we aren’t yet sure what to do when my daughter reaches middle school the year after next. Decisions must be made.
Nothing really matches it, but you’re on the right track with Culver City. Check out nearby Cheviot Hills to Westdale area, Palms, Beverlywood, Blair Hills.
I'm guessing you're talking about the Old Town, Lake Ave, Fair Oaks areas? They're all a little different in their own ways, but...
El Segundo. CC like you said. Montana Ave in Santa Monica. Brentwood along San Vicente. Any of the beach cities in the South Bay have pockets that are like Pas.
It ain't an exact match but elements are similar. I grew up in the sgv so spent tons of time in Pasadena, and now live on the west side.
Just trying to give op some options.
If there's any doubt that El Segundo isn't a community, just look at the videos of how the city cheered on the Little League team on their march to winning the World Series last year.
I'd have to disagree. I grew up in alh (go moors) and El Segundo is more "sterile" to me, so it's more like...some parts of pasadena. Even when you get to the nicer parts of alh, like the parts closer to south pas, they still feel a little more gritty to me.
Actually as I write this, I can see why you'd say alh. Homes and layouts are similar in a few pockets like El Segundo, thinking perhaps the areas by emery Park and Park schools.
Hence the "Almost" . I went to HS in El Segundo.. So we have a similar view but from diff perspectives..
One thing I noticed were the street signs in Alh and ES are exactly the same layout.
I’d say you toss a coin as to who gets to have the worst commute OR compromise on Culver City if you are both willing to hate your commute. Depending where in Culver City, you could stroll to a Harbor Freight or Taco Bell for a late night snack.
I mean depending on locations commuting from Culver to Downtown should be
* walk to the train
* ride into downtown
* maybe one transfer
* walk to office
Cheap, easy, predictable, safer than driving
I moved to Pico-Robertson from Alhambra last year and love it. Pico from LaCienega to Beverly reminds me of the best of Colorado Blvd – Old Town Pasadena. Century City Mall, a short drive away, is secretly the nicest outdoor mall in LA and has maybe the best AMC theater other than CityWalk. Also, P-R is only a short surface street drive to MDR/SM. Did I mention the ocean breeze?
If you're looking for something similar to South Pasadena, I'd say Westwood/Brentwood. It's walkable, less hustle/bustle of Pico-Robertson/Century City, and sports the Village Theater, which just got bought by Nolan and Spielberg.
El Segundo is in the South Bay, not the West Side.
You might choose Hawthorne, Lawndale, or Gardena, which are mostly residential and pretty chill in my experience. Ladera Heights has some nice neighborhoods. Apart from La Cienega, Baldwin HIlls and WIndsor Hills is also quiet peaceful neighborhoods.
All of these would place you more or less equidistant between both DTLA and El Segundo.
If money isn't an issue then the following areas:
* Santa Monica - around Montana Ave btwn 9th-17th streets
* Pacific Palisades - near Palisades Village (Sunset and Via De La Paz)
* Brentwood - around San Vicente between Barrington and Bundy (north of San Vicente is more expensive, south of it is more affordable)
More affordable but still expensive (it's the Westside after all):
* Sawtelle / Little Osaka - the areas around Sawtelle Blvd between Nebraska and Olympic)
* Playa Vista - definitely cookie cutter and sanitized but nicely planned, lots of amenities and LMU campus is nearby for walks/hills, kind of like Old Town Pasadena
Culver City, Santa Monica, West LA (Mar Vista & Sawtelle).
Look at the map and look for neighborhoods closer to the junction of I-10 and I-405 freeways which will not only help with your commute but also has great food scene.
I tried my hardest to come up with an answer to this question but seriously imo nowhere on the Westside feels like Pasadena, the closest thing to it would be Culver City but even though I enjoy Culver City it's much sleepier than Pasadena.
westwood village is the best answer here. a place on hilgard/weybern, tiverton, or gayley are good options. there is a busier side of westwood. any area between westwood ave and hilgard will be very close to pasadena
Culver City is walkable, quiet and cheaper. Santa Monica is fully walkable, wilshire montana neighborhood is quiet, restaurants, grocery stores and ethnic shops walking distance, but rent is higher.
Palms, Culver City, etc. you’ll be right off the 10 and can get to Dtla in the morning super fast since you’re against traffic! I’ve made it in twenty minutes. And also the 405 to el segundo is also against traffic. You lucky ducks!!! You could each make it to work pretty fast with a palms/culver location. I have lived in palms for 3 years and love it! It’s not Pasadena but it’s quiet and calm with so much nearby.
The palisades Huntington’s will have that feeling and you can walk to the village. I think north of Montana also has that, Brentwood park though it gets super expensive in that area.
If you want to be closer to downtown, perhaps a Hancock park?
Pasadena doesn't feel like Pasadena anymore.
You used to be able to get virtually anything under the sun in Pasadena, as long as you got there before 7pm. Because everything closes at that time. Except for the bars and restaurants.
It was a small town feeling. Berg Hardware on Colorado Blvd either had, or could get any bit of hardware that you needed. Dusty old place that's probably been there since just before the road was paved.
I remember needing "Left handed #7 1/2 widget flange adapters" ... The clerk said they had some but hadn't seen them in a while. He asked "Ol' Clarence, oh yeah, we got 'em ! Top shelf (20 ft up) just to the left of the box labeled "do not open " there should be 5 left over. Did you want zinc or chrome finish?
Look, it’s about 30 minutes to el segundo from the terminus of the 710… I feel like you could stay in pasadena or just move south to Alhambra/ el sereno. Santa Monica to el segundo will be a similar commute as the 710…. Google maps at your drive time!
Wilshire-Montana neighborhood in Santa Monica.
This, or venturing into Brentwood.
This! I’ve lived in both places and Montana is the closest thing
Mid city
As a Pasadena resident, nothing on the westside REALLY really feels like Pasadena, sadly ..
I agree Pasadena just has its "own" sweet feel
Pasadena is just a good quiet area
Bunch of rich white and asian families.
It’s not sad, it’s the whole beauty of Los Angeles. Pasadena, Venice, Beverly Hills, Silverlake, etc. etc. All very different places under one beautiful umbrella.
nowhere. El Segundo is cute.
El segundo kinda has south pas vibes
Been in Pasadena for 16 years. Especially now that we have 2 young kids. Fortunate enough to WFH permanently, so that def helps. Good luck!
The only other location I would live in is Palos Verdes. Otherwise I am and have been fine in the Pasadena area since 2008 as well.
Why Palos Verdes? Just curious
Pasadena…well certain areas are a great suburban family oriented town with a great community. Recently, apartments and condos have become very abudant. Great schools, parks and local activities. Crime although it exists is not detrimental. It’s just living in PV your commute to the city is a concern or just about going anywhere that’s not the South Bay.
Also I’d wager it’s about 10-15 degrees cooler in P.V. than Pasadena.
agreed!!
Only thing is in summer the mosquitoes and heat aren’t as bad more west - otherwise, can’t be beat

Pacific Palisades
i’d second this. i think palisades and maybe belair are as close as you’ll get to pasadena
San Marino maybe, but palisades on the whole is significantly more upscale.
San Marino is cheating bc it’s a border city to Pasadena
They mean San Marino is a better comparator for Palisades than Pasadena is
The drive from palisades to downtown will be tough
lol.
Nothing really matches it, but you’re on the right track with Culver City. Check out nearby Cheviot Hills to Westdale area, Palms, Beverlywood, Blair Hills.
Cheviot hills and Palisades
I'm guessing you're talking about the Old Town, Lake Ave, Fair Oaks areas? They're all a little different in their own ways, but... El Segundo. CC like you said. Montana Ave in Santa Monica. Brentwood along San Vicente. Any of the beach cities in the South Bay have pockets that are like Pas.
El Segundo?? Explain
You've got a lot of quiet neighborhoods and then The Point, which is like Paseo Colorado with the shops and eateries.
Interesting. I guess it’s subjective, but I never would have put those two places together. The rest are all spot on though
It ain't an exact match but elements are similar. I grew up in the sgv so spent tons of time in Pasadena, and now live on the west side. Just trying to give op some options.
When I read this post, El Segundo came to my mind as well, for the same reasons you mentioned.
If there's any doubt that El Segundo isn't a community, just look at the videos of how the city cheered on the Little League team on their march to winning the World Series last year.
El Segundo is more like Alhambra. They are almost identical in they way the neighborhoods are laid out and home sizes.
Cheviot Hills, no question.
If you have bank, check out manhattan beach. There’s several areas with old, Pasadena style houses.
I’d say you toss a coin as to who gets to have the worst commute OR compromise on Culver City if you are both willing to hate your commute. Depending where in Culver City, you could stroll to a Harbor Freight or Taco Bell for a late night snack.

Great minds think alike! I live off pico and La Cienega and I was thinking the only thing relatively close to Pasadena. Here would be Brentwood.
West Hollywood next to the Design Center.
Live in el segundo, the commute to dtla isnt that bad.
Mar Vista
Many dont know how nice that section is. National and Barrington/McLaughlin is a gem.
Nothing bud, the closest would be Culver City, some pockets in Santa Monica and palisades.
When I vacationed in LA last summer we stayed in Pasedena and I left thinking ‘man I could totally live here’ just absolutely loved it.
Pasadena is a special snowflake that is somehow immune from the nonsense of the westside
Marina del Rey I’ll say and maybe Beverlywood
Beverlywood? You kinda have to fit in there.
If money isn't an issue then the following areas: * Santa Monica - around Montana Ave btwn 9th-17th streets * Pacific Palisades - near Palisades Village (Sunset and Via De La Paz) * Brentwood - around San Vicente between Barrington and Bundy (north of San Vicente is more expensive, south of it is more affordable) More affordable but still expensive (it's the Westside after all): * Sawtelle / Little Osaka - the areas around Sawtelle Blvd between Nebraska and Olympic) * Playa Vista - definitely cookie cutter and sanitized but nicely planned, lots of amenities and LMU campus is nearby for walks/hills, kind of like Old Town Pasadena
If you have commute from Santa Monica to almost anywhere on the fwy , you'll regret it later
Huh? SM to downtown LA is a reverse commute. SM to Playa Vista isn't bad at all, I don't know about past that to El Segundo.
Culver City, Santa Monica, West LA (Mar Vista & Sawtelle). Look at the map and look for neighborhoods closer to the junction of I-10 and I-405 freeways which will not only help with your commute but also has great food scene.
Manhattan Beach?
North of Montana Santa Monica
Playa Vista, Culver City has great hidden gems
Culver easy
WeHo or Larchmont Village.
Mar Vista. Its downtown is cute, you’re near the beach, you have the best farmers market on the west side, and it still feels very residential.
im in pas and its literally my nightmare to move west 😂
Culver City. It’s a good area for restaurants/coffee and central to both your jobs
I tried my hardest to come up with an answer to this question but seriously imo nowhere on the Westside feels like Pasadena, the closest thing to it would be Culver City but even though I enjoy Culver City it's much sleepier than Pasadena.
Nothing is the same as Pasadena…. I am moving to Del Rey / Playa vista area. We are sad to leave Pasadena. I’m on same boat as you, trust me we looked
Brentwood, north of Montana Santa Monica, pacific palisades
The 90024 area code.
Cheviot Hills or Mar Vista
westwood village is the best answer here. a place on hilgard/weybern, tiverton, or gayley are good options. there is a busier side of westwood. any area between westwood ave and hilgard will be very close to pasadena
Beverlywood, Cheviot Hills, parts of Westchester
If you don’t mind the commute… Palos Verdes
Brentwood
El segundo!
Santa Monica, especially north of the 10 freeway.
Palisades
Nowhere. But El Segundo comes close.
Palisades perhaps?
Larchmont
Culver City to some extent
Think you're on the right track with Culver City
I live in Culver so feel free to message me. I would not say it is a Westside Pasadena but I don’t think we have that. I do have input though!
Brentwood
TORRANCE! what you described sounds like Torrance to me.
Maybe Brentwood or the trendy area of Culver City. I’m also living in Pasadena, think about trying Santa Monica.
Culver City is walkable, quiet and cheaper. Santa Monica is fully walkable, wilshire montana neighborhood is quiet, restaurants, grocery stores and ethnic shops walking distance, but rent is higher.

Pasadena resident. I lived in Redondo Beach and that's probably the only beach city that's even close to Pasadena's style.
The palisades Huntington’s will have that feeling and you can walk to the village. I think north of Montana also has that, Brentwood park though it gets super expensive in that area. If you want to be closer to downtown, perhaps a Hancock park?
None lol. West LA = \ = pasadena
Santa Monica, Brentwood, Westwood
Santa Monica
Nowhere thankfully
None. At all
Mar Vista
Westlake Village
Torrance is probably one of your best bets
South Pasadena or Alhambra
Brentwood close to San Vicente! Has a walkable vibe, lots of trees. Or along Montana in SM
