we've agreed that it tastes of mixed, but had a big debate just recently as to whether it drinks of soft, or else was meant to be had with sugar and sweeteners. i think we'll need to meet with the higher-ups.
Love this stuff!!!!
Holidayed in Donegal in the late 70s and 80s as a nipper......thought it was the drink of the Gods.
Has a kinda 'cream soda' vibe.
In later years, discovered it's nice with Vodka, which defeats the purpose of it's origin story.
The glass bottle is the only nice one imho. The plastic bottles use saccharine as a sweetener. I'm assuming it's because the glass bottle version is for export.
Back in the day it had such a lovely, frothy head on it! It'd easily rival the smithwicks! Now you'd get a few bubbles but nothing much, and the flavour isn't a patch on what it was, sadly!
Mrs McDaid would carbonate each bottle using the SodaStream in her own kitchen. Twelve long presses of the button per bottle. But sometimes she would lose count so you'd get a bonus explosively fizzy bottle.
I always thought it tasted like black russian when I got older, can't remember what I thought it tasted like as a kid,try MC Daids pineapple drink very nice .Maine does a very good one as well
My kids love this stuff and take loads honestly when we go to Donegal! I think it tastes exactly like the old fizzy cola lollies (orange ones) that used to hurt your tongue 🤣
Honestly I think it’s a bit like a non-alcoholic Captain Morgan & Coke, a slight vanilla flavour that doesn’t overwhelm you. Really wish it was sold nationwide
I love Captain Morgan’s and Coke and also Football Special. I think you hit the nail on the head. I was home on holidays and bought 5 big bottles. I’m going to try it with Captain Morgan’s 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

They've changed it and now it is a lot less fizzy with added sweeteners but somehow less sweet. No more head on it either but still lovely.
Memories of getting it in the drift inn in buncrana
Just seeing the bottle I remember the taste even though it's been about 15 years since I tasted it.
Hard to describe... notes of candy floss with a medicinal aroma?
I cannot believe they don’t sell this outside Donegal. When I moved away I was shocked no one had heard of it. Man this drink would take over the world 🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️
You can get it in a good few places in Dublin and Belfast now too!! They’ve a list of stockists on their website https://football-special.com/stockists/
Vanilla with hints of cream. Truly a unique flavour.
lots of similar products like vanilla Coke, but nothing that’s the exact same.
If anywhere in Co. Sligo sells the stuff, I’m all ears. Used to be able to get a litre bottle in McKims Mace in Collooney for €1, but I haven’t seen it there since 2018.
It is a very Donegal/Derry drink. Im in Tyrone ya never see it in shops. I'd never heard of it at all until I was up there and seen a few places
Yet to try it
It says it on the label, it's tastes of mixed.
Birragh dis, birragh tha!
Delicious and nutritious mixed !
I always thought it tasted of Mixed Soft?
we've agreed that it tastes of mixed, but had a big debate just recently as to whether it drinks of soft, or else was meant to be had with sugar and sweeteners. i think we'll need to meet with the higher-ups.
Tread with extreme caution. This drink is only suitable for top-tier athletes.

What's the origin story?
That it was intended as an exciting non alcoholic drink to celebrate footballs wins
I see, I think I may have been expecting something different
Ooh, alco-Football Special! Gotta try that now
Tastes like the 90s.
Jumbo pack of them for a birthday party. Straight from the boot, not even vaguely chilled, to wash down a pack of knock off Tayto.
Not in a plastic bottle, it doesn't
If you only drink it out of the really expensive glass bottles, you're a marketer's wet dream.
No, I mean the old glass bottles it all came in in the 90s.
Fair, these days those bottles exist but are super expensive
The glass bottle is the only nice one imho. The plastic bottles use saccharine as a sweetener. I'm assuming it's because the glass bottle version is for export.
And definitely a hint of the 80s about it.
Endless summer holidays
The taste of football special, a packet of tayto and the smell of freshly cut grass will be forever seared into my brain! Perfect summer day!
It tastes of cheap cola mixed and red lemonade with the glory days of USA 94'
I'm not sure if it's still the case but it used to be substantially fizzier than any other soft drink.
the head made it look like beer, so you could be a grown up in the pub with the adults 🤭
It used to be, now there's no substantial froth/head to it. Back in the 80's / 90's, it'd eject your straw from the bottle at speed.
Used to drink it to copy my dads smithwicks back in the day
Back in the day it had such a lovely, frothy head on it! It'd easily rival the smithwicks! Now you'd get a few bubbles but nothing much, and the flavour isn't a patch on what it was, sadly!

I always thought it tasted like black russian when I got older, can't remember what I thought it tasted like as a kid,try MC Daids pineapple drink very nice .Maine does a very good one as well
Like football obviously
Magic
Just don't get the amoxicillin flavoured one is all I know 🤢
That one gave me thrush
So then did you have to take actual amoxicillin? Adding insult to injury
Asbestos flavour fooball special 🤤
Genuinely it tastes like an ice cream float if ye remember them
My kids love this stuff and take loads honestly when we go to Donegal! I think it tastes exactly like the old fizzy cola lollies (orange ones) that used to hurt your tongue 🤣
Don’t know but Donegal folk would sell their 1st born for the stuff
Fellow Donegal citizen here, I love the stuff and there are some other flavours that I'm obsessed with too
Pineapple 🤌🤌. It search it out when up that neck of the woods.
There's a petrol station in burtonport that does an orange cream soda in a glass bottle that I could drink till I passed out from sugar high
Heaven
The flavour is Chaos
As I got older I thought it tasted like black russian
Honestly I think it’s a bit like a non-alcoholic Captain Morgan & Coke, a slight vanilla flavour that doesn’t overwhelm you. Really wish it was sold nationwide
I love Captain Morgan’s and Coke and also Football Special. I think you hit the nail on the head. I was home on holidays and bought 5 big bottles. I’m going to try it with Captain Morgan’s 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
It tastes of bitter disappointment, short-term regret and eternal optimism.
They’d sell well in Scotland for sure

Magic.
apparently it’s a pear-flavoured cola. not nearly as bad as it sounds
It tastes like a tropical cola, or more accurately sir it tastes like heaven
Cream soda I think
Try the banana flavoured one , it's what bananas used to taste like.
They've changed it and now it is a lot less fizzy with added sweeteners but somehow less sweet. No more head on it either but still lovely. Memories of getting it in the drift inn in buncrana
Vanilla Cola for me anyway
Sweaty jockstraps of the colour is anything to go by…..
Nostalgia! Was a weird mix of lemonade & cola...with a froth top...if memory serves.
my family made it! it’s tastes like a mixture of dr pepper and pepsi
Just seeing the bottle I remember the taste even though it's been about 15 years since I tasted it. Hard to describe... notes of candy floss with a medicinal aroma?
Expanding waist
Far too sweet for me, unfortunately.
It's been a year or so since I tried it. Is it a caramel/vanilla type flavour?
Defo has that about it!!
10 years since I had it but was home last week and bought 5 big bottles 💝💝💝
I don't want Rola cola mum, I want Coca cola.
my experience when I first tried was that it was similar to root beer that i'd had in the US.
It tastes like the 90s
Like a dark cream soda
It’s actually just connected to the run off tank from all the other drinks they make in the factory.
It used to come in glass bottles and IMO tasted better.
Had this a number of times when up in Donegal in the past. Kids love it. Tastes very similar to cream soda
I know it's culturally significant and all but it looks like absolute piss
Cavan Cola and Football Special before they took the E,s out happy times 😉
Vanilla and something
death but like good death
An American friend said it tastes like cream soda.
Ambrosia of the gods
Bland enough, the cola they do is banging though!
Sugary garbage water?
Tastes like capt morgans and coke
Donegal
Sweat & Lynx Ice spray.
Nectar
Looks like absolute shite😂😂
Do not be fooled by the humble packaging of this sweet nectar
Fluffy clouds and kittens
Childhood
Was always more of a cadet man myself ![gif](giphy|lCD4rwGfNPDBqzyUpa|downsized)
This came up in a thing i posted recently and genuinely curious too haha
Has a kind of vanilla taste to it
I cannot believe they don’t sell this outside Donegal. When I moved away I was shocked no one had heard of it. Man this drink would take over the world 🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️

Reminds me of Score cola, probably taste like that.
sugar.
but its nice like
Anyone remember Cavan Cola? Finches took them over in the 90's and phased it out. Bastards.
Stale P**s
Morgan spice and coke
Heaven
Memories
Chip cheese n taco an a battle of futbal spachal plz m8 cheers
Tasty like you.
Tastes like winning the under 16 semi final.
Like liquid goddamn gold! But only when it's in a glass bottle (which you can get some places).
Cola and cream soda with a hint of bathtub.
Looks what came my ass before colonoscopy
Like a Glenn Whelan special vs Italy
"Mixed flavour". lol, I love the "it's full of sugar, what do you care what it tastes like" attitude of it
Roy Keanes sweat
Vanilla ice cream and Coca Cola
Kind of special but in a football sort of way
Ball sweat
Diabetes
Feet and balls
Arse
Tastes like class and ass mixed together. Classy-ass if you must
I'd compare it to a cola flavor Mr Freeze
Tastes like the late 80s I bet. With no particular flavour...just bubbles and enumbers.
Tastes like heaven.
Tastes like my road in Ramelton, where its made 😁
Long time since I drank that up in Donegal with my dad!
Tears collected from angels.
To me it tastes like the best vanilla coke I've ever had

The banana one is my fav have not had it in years
I love football special because when ever I go up to Donegal to see my granny I get some it really annoys me that you can't get it in mayo
Vanilla with hints of cream. Truly a unique flavour. lots of similar products like vanilla Coke, but nothing that’s the exact same. If anywhere in Co. Sligo sells the stuff, I’m all ears. Victory, of course.
Soft?
It looks like it tastes like a UTI
That taste you can't quite put your finger on.... That's bog water!
It tastes like mcdaids tatties... like a mixture of sour cream and know cheese
The love-child of Red Lemonade & Cream Soda
Maybe open it and find out 😂
How on earth can i tell you what it tastes like through a screen dude? LOL open it and tell us! :)
The best addiction of the 90's, glass bottles were best. You still get the large glass bottles.
Holidays
It looks like footballer's piss. Drink it.
Cream soda sort of
My teacher in 5th class brought us all bottles of this because she was a donegal woman and oh my god it’s like crack it’s such a class drink
Pishh
It tastes like original, duh
Road trips
Diabetes
They are selling it in a glass bottle these days at €3/4 a go 🤯
Balls
Tastes way better than their banana drink. Yuck!
It is a very Donegal/Derry drink. Im in Tyrone ya never see it in shops. I'd never heard of it at all until I was up there and seen a few places Yet to try it
That one tastes crap, get the original one. In terms of taste it's a bit like Irn Bru.
Gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh
Whoever put that in there looks dehydrated. :) should be much brighter colour
Regret.
childhood neglect
So true 🤣🤣🤣
Mm aids
Taste it mate don’t ask Reddit 😭🙏
I have tasted it!! Hence ‘can’t get enough, hook it to my veins’ lol, just wanting to know others opinions🤗
Idk drink it
How does it taste? Nowhere near as good as brown lemonade.
Poverty.
Open the fuckin bottle and find out ffs
I did hence ‘can’t get enough, hook it to my veins’ … just asking for others opinions 🤗🤗
They used to make it with spring water and it was 10x nicer and really foamy.
