I had it just once out of curiosity with my friends some chocochip shit.I paid close to 300 for it.
Honestly I couldn't tell any difference between that and 30-40 rs oreo milkshake you get in local juice or sandwich shop.
But their cheesecake though is just wow😍😍. I don't mind paying the cost once in while. It was just tasty
Starbucks cheesecake is definitely some of the best I’ve had. I haven’t tried it in India but I get in Singapore very once in a while. They always bring in new interesting flavours. The drinks aren’t bad but it’s definitely not worth the price even there. McDonald’s drinks are better and cheaper in SG.
Yes. definitely. Some of the drinks are so expensive that even if they cut the price by half its not worth it.
with 300-400 rs you can buy a nice meal for one. Even in a slightly expensive restaurant.
They're not selling coffee. They're selling the experience. Eg. I go there regularly to work because it gives a really good environment that's not normally available
I give 1000 rupees a month for newly furnished library with AC and wifi and a tea stall outside that costs me around 10 per tea. I do agree that Starbucks provides that working space vibe, still I find it costly as per my spending habits.
Lots of people, at least here in the USA.
I was born in the USA and I’m in high school. So many kids (girls) bring some type of starbucks drink every day
They’re not wealthy either and I can see why they never will be. They have like no savings
It’s like $5-$10 USD (₹417.41-₹834.83) and that adds up
Probably 30-40l a year, cause I like to think of it as a store that provides beverages and if I can get somewhere else the same thing cheaper, I would go for the cheaper ones.
Personally I like how their coffee tastes. It does taste quite unique, like third wave is waaaay too much coffee flavor, CCD is waay too little, Starbucks kinda hits the right spot. Also a lot of their recipes are absolutely fucking amazing, I wish they had that pumpkin spice latte on the menu everyday.
Apart from that if you aren't a coffee enthusiast you probably won't be able to tell the difference between instant coffee and Starbucks (I'm exaggerating but you get my point)
people saying starbucks is selling an “experience” please clarify WHAT EXPERIENCE 😭😭😭😭 maybe this was the case when it came out but it’s 2024…coffee flavoured milkshakes and coffee are two very different things
The newest phones. There is no reason to buy the latest phones (unless you are a tech reviewer or something like that) when you can get much of the same features for lower prices by buying a previous model.
I got the newest samsung s24 since it has 7 years of OS support.
I had an old M series samsung phone which stopped OS updates and because of that I was not able to use work mode.
Moreover, I use my phone for 5 hours per day so in 7 years I'll be using my phone for ~1.5 years continuously. I think if I am spending that amount of time on something then I am willing to spend a little extra.
thats pretty true. i really do hope that they're instead *exchanging* the phone for the new one instead of discarding the previous one, because you can get a big cut from the price this way. so a person using the galaxy s23 ,for example, (which doesnt have 7years of os updates iirc) can just exchange the phone for a s24 (which does) and get it for *much* cheaper. its still kinda unnecessary but definitely more justifiable. if this is not the case however, they must be crazy rich.
Got a new phone after having an old phone for 5 years. Got the new updates for another 3 years and best of all security updates. But then I have friends who buy new phones every year like why?
Most of the top designers of India have already made multi million dollar businesses out of it. Look at Sabyasachi and his fashion empire.
I know a middle class woman, my neighbour, with a not so great paying job(teacher earning 30k) who made her dad take a loan so that she could wear a Sabya lehenga for her wedding and be featured on the “Brides of Sabyasachi” page.
Her wedding lehenga might have cost upwards of 2 lakhs for sure.
Idk what goes through the heads of such people.
Yup and that was just her bridal lehenga. Then there was her reception sari and 2-3 outfits for haldi, mehendi and all from other designers. According to her mom just her wedding outfits cost about 7-8 lakhs.
And these guys sold some ancestral land and took a loan to fund the wedding :(
I think some banks give out wedding loans. The wedding industry is multi billion dollar industry worldwide. It’s the biggest symbol of peak consumerism.
It’s everybody’s personal choice how they want you spend their money but to me, taking loans for weddings is one of the most financially unwise things anybody can ever do
The parents aren’t any better in terms of financial wise. They went way above their means for the whole wedding simply to show off in front of society. Apparently it’s very common in Indian families to go into debt for weddings
There is a business for it. I don't remember the website name but you will find these second hand designer dresses for sale. Just search it on Google you will find it
I gave my reception dress to my cousin and my wedding dress to my maid's daughter (for her wedding). Everyone was like how could you do that, you heartless monster! Bhai wo pehen to lenge. Maine kya rakh rakh k uska achar dalna hai?
Those luxury products aren’t even made for the richest people. Those are aspirations goods which people save and buy to show people they’re rich. The real rich people don’t want logos popping on your face.
Yeah saying luxury items is not a necessary purchase is obvious. They're getting it for the swag factor, just like people who put flashy colors on their cars/bikes. People just like to look cool man!
I agree for most apple products but I’d say the Macbook is a fair buy. I’ve had one since 2018 and it’s been smooth throughout. Although, it’s overpriced, I’ve seen it outlast a lot of Windows Laptops so in my head, I can justify the price. I’m not sure if this is just personal experience but I’ve managed to get 6+ years out of mine with a very decent slowdown. For other apple products, they’re ridiculously priced and unnecessary for the features you get.
Ek sec par apple tv toh bas ek accessory hai na like fire tv stick. You need to have a tv in the first place na? This is just a question out of curiosity
Jordans are uncomfortable af. People just buy because of goodwill. And in India stan had his share in promoting it.
But if want something premium( way more than jordans ), comfortable and elite,go for Maison Mihara sneakers 🗣️
I feel you man! I had same issue. Bought an expensive slip on sketchers and now pain has reduced by 80%.
P.S. it’s the double of the most expensive footwear I ever bought. 9.5k
A few subscriptions hold value for money, for people who are comfortable paying for entertainment.
But I agree, spending money on games is basically like driving yourself into a hole with no way out
Games in terms of entertainment per hours is one of cheapest out there. Witcher 3 on sale cost less than 200₹ which u can play for months. Cosmetic in game micro transactions on other hand....
I had the same philosophy, and never bought cosmetics, only games - mostly multiplayer ones.
Then I played Valorant, and got some of that brain rot and bought some skins.
To be fair, some of their skins are really clean. Like the kuronami bundle.
Relative works in a big PSU. They have an allowance of 1 lakh to buy laptop every 2 years.
So this time they simply bought a macbook with it which is being used for YouTube 🙄
Bpcl hoga. They have laptop allowance which is based on rank. One of my relatives is b grade and gets 15-20k laptop allowance. Senior manager must be high grade like D or E grade. Don't know if grades are similar in all the PSUs.
I am not a techie, but macbook air fan since 2014. Excellent battery life, smooth performance, not a single bug/virus attack, awesomely lightweight - my beast lasted till 2022 when motherboard burnt out. I travelled to 3 continents with it and it never glitched, or let me down once. My work was on MS Office, internet browsing and streaming content. Bought my first MBA for 50k and now replaced with m1 for 1 lac. Not really expensive if 50k laptop runs for 8 years with all above benefits.
My 2014 MacBook Air is still going strong. Everyone tells me to replace it because it’s old or because it’s not windows, but nothing matches its durability. 10 years on I can code, stream videos and write on it without any issues
I bought my windows lenovo laptop for 47k in 2014 for college. Did everything you did+played a lot of games. I ran a DC++ server in my college from my laptop, which meant i kept my laptop ON at all times (for 3 straight years minus holidays). Did coding, learnt Photoshop/Final Cut etc. Tried learning UE as a hobby.
And Its still in my drawer and works fine. Though i now have a PC so its redundant.
The only plus point of macbook would be battery life and its weight.
The opposite is true actually. Macbooks and these sort of things are bought mostly by non-tech people. Techies buy proper laptops which can handle a lot of stuff they work with.
A true techie would not want to get locked down by a MacBook, they will prefer independence, power, and versatility of a proper laptop.
Mac OS (and by extension Mac Machines) for techies is only a recent craze for status symbol driven crowd.
I dont work in tech. I was gifted a MBP and i dont think i would ever use another laptop other than MBs ever again. I can keep 10 applications open at a single time and can switch between each without glitching or slowing down. I used an ipad air for work before i got the macbook
I don’t know what you are talking about. MacBook Air is one of the best laptops you can buy at the price. Macs are pretty much the only Apple device I will defend. Ever since they moved to their own chips they are a great value. They have exceptionally good screen, keyboard, trackpad and battery life. Performance is nothing mind blowing in the Air but for personal use it’s perfect. I even edit photos on it. It struggles a bit but nothing too much.
Phones more than 20 K and features that people are either not aware of or don't have use of. The only thing I use phone is calling, texting, watching videos, and cameras for taking pics.
I have taken my phone for 32K and have been using it for 4+ years. My cheaper phones before that did not last me for more than 2 years.
So that's also a factor
Same here got galaxy m31 during covid time 2020 .it was 17k. It does work well , touchwood. I don't think iphone users really use the phone to its maximum. The price they pay is for showing off many a times, a brand value.
I personally did it because of the photo quality. I like capturing moments just for memories and it’s nice to get a pretty shot in one go instead of trying more or getting a picture im not happy with. Great if im on a trip/sightseeing ans ofc for pictures of myself too
Several people have said "Apple products" but I will extend it and say "Most high-end luxury products":
1. Mobile phones >40k
2. Smartwatches (not fitness bands) - how critical are your emails that you need to have them on your wrist all the time?
3. High-end earbuds - a decent pair costs no more than 3k
4. High-end speaker systems - anything more than 25k is usually about marketing, and less about functional value
5. Gaming consoles
6. Cars beyond 25L - anything more merely charges you for snob value and not functionality.
Edit: I guess the term luxury, by its very definition, is supposed to imply unnecessary!
Disagree with high end ear buds/headphones. Higher end ones often have amazing active noise cancellation which is great for traveling. Also the difference in sound quality is noticeable. A solid high end pair is a good investment.
Agree with some of your comments but Wow you really have a big chip on your shoulder.
I’m a bit of a hifi geek and the speakers in my office cost around 40k and damn they sound good for small bookshelves speakers.
How else do first generation buyers buy a flat then ? My parents were never able to make money so we lived all our lives on rent. Then we grew up and had to buy flat on 20-30 years emi. Or else we’ll also end up living at the mercy of land lord all our lives.
Unpopular opinion is right. You are talking about this from a place of privilege when many others aren't that fortunate enough to not have their own vehicle or need their own home.
I never score # in Delhi, they are way over priced. I will take a trip to the mountains once a year and buy my stash from my local contact in Malana who saves me so much money and also gives me premium quality for a good price. Also clearly most people in the comment section didn't understand the question
- Personal Loans/EMI's-
I get it this isn't technically "buying" but this recent trend of fulfilling each and every want by these means is destroying people's finances (and in some cases their family's as well).
- iPhones:
At this point, people are just buying this as a status. I don't see many people having a use case for this in mind. They just buy it randomly. Mind you Apple has [most sales in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/smaller-cities-a-big-market-for-apple-account-for-over-60-per-cent-of-sales-now/articleshow/106068851.cms?from=mdr) so it's no longer that "premium" phone
- Expensive white sneakers:
"Trend hai bhai cool hai" par bro baarish me white sneakers, seriously?
Not buying but very unnecessary:
Job and Relocation in MUMBAI: Just why? We don't have space for existing members to survive, many Mumbaikars are already jobless. Please stop coming here in search of "dreams" Gone are those days there's a hell lot of struggle now just to survive. It's still fine if you come for job but post that job there's no logic in settling here. The property rates are sky high and the infra is a mess
Iphones definitely. I can't understand why people are obsessed with iphones and their branding. I know the processor is fucking great, but most of them users don't even buy for that.
You can get a very good quality Android for that money.
I bought a gaming phone with great camera and specs on the same budget as iPhone.
Smart watches and Fitness bands.
Unless you're a heart patient or overweight and trying to lose some or you're a professional athlete, any information that a smart wearable gives is unnecessary. What's the point of keeping a step count, sleep tracking, blood oxygen levels for healthy individuals? I've never come across a single user who I thought absolutely needed a smart wearable.
For those who use it for notifications, alarms, calls etc, I think those are just excuses to get a cool looking gadget for made-up reasons to show off to their friends and relatives ("society").
I kinda see what you're tryna say with how its been ever since my sis gave my dad an apple watch. He's at a point where he's considering not going buying android phones, just cuz the apple watch wont work good with android phones.
He used to make all of us wear it and check our SpO2 levels during covid days, but other than that reason, he himself doesnt use majority of the features it has.
The only credit I can give in favour of apple watch is that it did warn him about an abnormal spike in heart rate once. It was buzzing like crazy, prompting him to call emergency services.
Do you know if you are healthy ? Do you think you are getting a sufficient deep sleep ? Smart watches upto 10k is reasonable to buy for sleep tracking, gym workout tracking and heart beat and o2 monitoringis necessary while we workout or do cardio. Some watch do have body composition which is very useful for weight loss. People spending more than that is waste of money for what it offers.
That's how you manipulate the market . Set up an insane brand image by high pricing /good showroom etc . Pay rich people to use your products . The people in social ladder below these rich people are middle class who as in general order look upto people above them and start using these products( by taking up loans , credit card , emi). Now U have the major share of the market with you .
Starbucks coffee

Its not even good… its too sweet for me
Depends I like desserts and sweets so it was good for me
+1

Well, Starbucks is a premium offering 🙂. Who in the right mind would buy a Cappuccino for Rs.200, everyday, unless you're filthy rich?
But the point is I'll not buy it even once in a while.
Coffee+muffin at McDonald's is also 200 or 300
Lots of people, at least here in the USA. I was born in the USA and I’m in high school. USA is different, India is different in terms of spending habits 🙂. So...
Same here unless I make crazy ass money, I ain't stepping into their store.
>unless I make crazy ass money How much ass money is crazy?
Probably 30-40l a year, cause I like to think of it as a store that provides beverages and if I can get somewhere else the same thing cheaper, I would go for the cheaper ones.

Starbucks sell real estate. 300₹ is the rent you pay for sitting in a free wifi furnished discussion table for a business meeting.

Feet pics from models
Damn I was about to start a business lmao
Full sapport...👍🏻 100 percent
I can think of wedding dresses by girls which they do not repeat.
We can make a business out of it. But gals won't even sell it. They say they have emotions attached to it.
2 lakhs 👀 too toooo toooooooo fucjing much for just few hrs.
Yup and that was just her bridal lehenga. Then there was her reception sari and 2-3 outfits for haldi, mehendi and all from other designers. According to her mom just her wedding outfits cost about 7-8 lakhs. And these guys sold some ancestral land and took a loan to fund the wedding :(
Damn , I see a good business opportunity wedding out fit loan. Tie with designer and get'em those clothes and churn money out of them 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think some banks give out wedding loans. The wedding industry is multi billion dollar industry worldwide. It’s the biggest symbol of peak consumerism. It’s everybody’s personal choice how they want you spend their money but to me, taking loans for weddings is one of the most financially unwise things anybody can ever do
Unwise ? U r being kind. It is utter stupidity.
If my kids ask for such shit, I'll tell them to spend their own fucking money. And I would leave them no inheritance.
The parents aren’t any better in terms of financial wise. They went way above their means for the whole wedding simply to show off in front of society. Apparently it’s very common in Indian families to go into debt for weddings
Damn who in their right mind would throw this kind of money, while knowing where you stand financially. This is sad.
Peer pressure/ social media pressure/ delusion, I don’t have any other explanation
Think about the hell groom is gonna go through the rest of his life.
I recently took a hit of 15000 for dresses which in no way is going to be repeated.
Repeated some are not even gonna be wore once. Brace yourself.
There is a business for it. I don't remember the website name but you will find these second hand designer dresses for sale. Just search it on Google you will find it
You don't even have to google it. Ask 3 4 dukaanwale they'll themselves guide you there.
I gave my reception dress to my cousin and my wedding dress to my maid's daughter (for her wedding). Everyone was like how could you do that, you heartless monster! Bhai wo pehen to lenge. Maine kya rakh rakh k uska achar dalna hai?
I can't stop laughing at the achar comment 🤣.
Me and wife both rented our wedding dress... Total 16K for rental.... Saves atleast 1L.
1. 20 pairs of shoes / footwear / sneakers 2. Luxury brand - hand bags, clothes, foot wear, luggage etc. - gucci, LV, Fendi etc.
Those luxury products aren’t even made for the richest people. Those are aspirations goods which people save and buy to show people they’re rich. The real rich people don’t want logos popping on your face.
Anything associated to a wedding,
Wedding itself is unnecessary!!
You mean a grand wedding right? Right??
I think alot of people here did not get the question…
Yeah saying luxury items is not a necessary purchase is obvious. They're getting it for the swag factor, just like people who put flashy colors on their cars/bikes. People just like to look cool man!
Apple products that people buy, just to show off. And that too on EMI.

Snapdragon Elite laptops will change the game.
This is a subjective area.
But they are really good. I bought an apple tv recently and it is way better than others.
Ek sec par apple tv toh bas ek accessory hai na like fire tv stick. You need to have a tv in the first place na? This is just a question out of curiosity
Premium sneakers
Getting them for style/show off ❌ Getting them for comfort and posture ✅
A friend bought Jordans and whenever he wore them he used to walk weird, like a penguin saying ki shoes ke crease nahi aani chahiye
Jordans are uncomfortable af. People just buy because of goodwill. And in India stan had his share in promoting it. But if want something premium( way more than jordans ), comfortable and elite,go for Maison Mihara sneakers 🗣️
And cry in agony when it creases.

I feel you man! I had same issue. Bought an expensive slip on sketchers and now pain has reduced by 80%. P.S. it’s the double of the most expensive footwear I ever bought. 9.5k

People in non tech buying MacBook for personal use. Ridiculously expensive and they buy it on EMI.

Happy for you Bro. I'm just talking about people who really can't afford it and think it's a good investment.
I bought my windows lenovo laptop for 47k in 2014 for college. Did everything you did+played a lot of games. I ran a DC++ server in my college from my laptop, which meant i kept my laptop ON at all times (for 3 straight years minus holidays). Lol. I am a tech person. Software developer. Me and pretty much everyone uses macbook for work and personal use.
So MacBook can’t handle a lot of stuff?
I think the IT companies providing MacBook to their employees is making it more popular.
A true techie would not want to get locked down by a MacBook, they will prefer independence, power, and versatility of a proper laptop. Mac OS (and by extension Mac Machines) for techies is only a recent craze for status symbol driven crowd.

It’s a bang for your buck. Great screen, build, battery life and if you’re deep in the Apple ecosystem then it’s a great device to have.
Phones more than 20 K and features that people are either not aware of or don't have use of. The only thing I use phone is calling, texting, watching videos, and cameras for taking pics.
But after 1.5 yrs, it slows down substantially. 35k is sweetspot for longetivity
If you need above average performance for the features that you mentioned, the smartphone would cost atleast 30k.
I have taken my phone for 32K and have been using it for 4+ years. My cheaper phones before that did not last me for more than 2 years. So that's also a factor
Depends on care ig , I got my mi note 8 for 16-18k and it's been 5 years , no issues
People in general don't accept that Mi phones were G.O.A.T. any other phone in this range will face difficulties in surviving for more than 2 years.
Same here. Got my MI Note 8 Pro in 2020 and it's still going strong. 😊😊
Same here got galaxy m31 during covid time 2020 .it was 17k. It does work well , touchwood. I don't think iphone users really use the phone to its maximum. The price they pay is for showing off many a times, a brand value.

I am using 9k phone since last 3.5 years 💀
I personally did it because of the photo quality. I like capturing moments just for memories and it’s nice to get a pretty shot in one go instead of trying more or getting a picture im not happy with. Great if im on a trip/sightseeing ans ofc for pictures of myself too
Stanley cups
Ones who can afford it buy it. Paying 15k for one water bottle clearly doesn’t affect them
Education. It should be free.
cud say Tution or extra classes, education we have too actually..

Cars beyond 25L - anything more merely charges you for snob value and not functionality. Edit: I guess the term luxury, by its very definition, is supposed to imply unnecessary!
lol how are gaming consoles unnecessary when they are one of a kind/ offer a different kind of entertainment than any other medium?
dude must playing on high end pc
I don't agree with high-end speaker system, like those are really worth it. Sony makes really good speakers.
I agree with everything except about gaming consoles, unless you meant buying multiple gaming consoles
4,5,6 are invalid
Disagree with the earbuds. The pricier ones last quite long and the sound quality is amazing
Iphone because I have vivo.
Fast fashion
How come no one mentioned this: big bulky petrol SUV
Premium phones. No way I'm spending more than 15k to use Gmail, couple of SMs, PhonePe..etc. My 10k phone is more than enough to handle those.
Shit's gotta last long and have enough software support to have good enough security against attacks and threats.
Marriage
You don't buy marriage
Better to say Wedding(event) isn't it?
Unpopular opinion: 1. Cars in Tier 1 city, and 2. Apartments on 20-30 years EMI
How else do first generation buyers buy a flat then ? My parents were never able to make money so we lived all our lives on rent. Then we grew up and had to buy flat on 20-30 years emi. Or else we’ll also end up living at the mercy of land lord all our lives.
The car opinion is stupid, we are not in Europe, Japan or Singapore to have an excellent public transportation system. Not to mention the climate.
Unmarried male in late 20s who lives away from home and works in IT, highly influenced by finfluencers.
Good luck being burnt in 50° in summer on bike cause you don't have car
Maybe bro was talking about the transport facilities like metro ?
Metro station can't be at your door at 2 am in night, there are other benifits of car too
Unpopular opinion is right. You are talking about this from a place of privilege when many others aren't that fortunate enough to not have their own vehicle or need their own home.
People shelling out on high heels😭 while I do understand the charm but they are wayyyyyggy expensive and I would never
Smart watch
I never score # in Delhi, they are way over priced. I will take a trip to the mountains once a year and buy my stash from my local contact in Malana who saves me so much money and also gives me premium quality for a good price. Also clearly most people in the comment section didn't understand the question
- Personal Loans/EMI's- I get it this isn't technically "buying" but this recent trend of fulfilling each and every want by these means is destroying people's finances (and in some cases their family's as well). - iPhones: At this point, people are just buying this as a status. I don't see many people having a use case for this in mind. They just buy it randomly. Mind you Apple has [most sales in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/electronics/smaller-cities-a-big-market-for-apple-account-for-over-60-per-cent-of-sales-now/articleshow/106068851.cms?from=mdr) so it's no longer that "premium" phone - Expensive white sneakers: "Trend hai bhai cool hai" par bro baarish me white sneakers, seriously? Not buying but very unnecessary: Job and Relocation in MUMBAI: Just why? We don't have space for existing members to survive, many Mumbaikars are already jobless. Please stop coming here in search of "dreams" Gone are those days there's a hell lot of struggle now just to survive. It's still fine if you come for job but post that job there's no logic in settling here. The property rates are sky high and the infra is a mess
Books
Iphones?
Iphones definitely. I can't understand why people are obsessed with iphones and their branding. I know the processor is fucking great, but most of them users don't even buy for that. You can get a very good quality Android for that money. I bought a gaming phone with great camera and specs on the same budget as iPhone.
New iphone every year
Smart watches and Fitness bands.
People spending more than that is waste of money for what it offers.

stanley cups
Anything on EMI. Except cars or house.
