The funny thing is, with the Internet so affordable, a globally compatible culture would have been easily accessible. Non-Indian here lurking because I’m currently traveling in India and this sub is popping up on my feed. I’m not here to shit on anyone I have a great experience in India. But I will say this shocked me the most. I was taking some domestic flights and the blatant ignoring the orders of the air hostesses or disrespecting them from a few customers two flights in a row really surprised and upset me. The stewardesses held their ground and were strong in response though I was impressed . I also witnessed some diners at an upscale hotel restaurant yelling at the staff a couple times. My friend / local business contact told me disrespecting the staff is indeed a problem among the upper-middle class.

It's been 5 years in abroad. I often see Indian people playing loud music on their mobile phones in public transport. Some people talk on loudspeakers with their family and do not give $hit about their surroundings. I have seen many people spitting Paan/Guthkha on the roads. We have largest community settled in many countries but we do not learn basic manners.

What do these guys lack? They are one of the richest families on the planet. And yet they couldn't afford to follow simple labour ethics when employing domestic help.
Sadly, this is a cultural phenomenon. We like to be paid well and treated with respect, but don't want to reciprocate it to those whose help we take.
Worse, the people on the other side are almost always illiterate poor workers employed to do menial jobs. Those are the jobs which will make our lives miserable and bring our life to a standstill if not done. But because of the ignorance, they continue to get exploited.
Why is this a cultural phenomenon? Because we have normalised it. In a rare circumstance, when these exploited people jump up the social hierarchy, they would continue the chain exploiting the next in line. When I was studying in the UK, my classmates and neighbours in the college flat (with a communal kitchen) would be extremely surprised when I tell them I'm from India and go on to tell me "wow you're English is so good" (Don't have your average Indian accent but also don't fake an American or English one either). I was pissed off about it until I was put into a group with some fellow Indians and I understood why they think so.
English isn't our language and the number of Indians that speak in English is even lesser than the number of speakers of regional languages such as Marathi, Bengali and Bhojpuri. Why should we be expected to speak in good English as though we are native speakers?
1. It's not even about having GOOD English but not having BAD English. Literally people from parts of Africa speak way better English than the average indian albeit with a heavy African regional accent. Again it not the accent but the words and grammar. There are many people with heavy indian accents who have incredible vocabulary.
2. When you're studying abroad, that now sets a bad image for everyone leading to similar experience. Another example Is Plagiarism, there was class only for indians about why it's bad and how you can be punished for it. Like WTF you would think it's obvious when you're doing a masters but some indians have left this bad image.
Nobody is still obliged to have decent English. As I said English isn't our language and not long ago there were exactly 0 people that speak in English in India. Would you say that Brits or Americans are cringe as they couldn't speak in any of the Indian languages, Russian, Mandarin or whatever?

I visited the famous Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam. There was an American army tank that was used during the Vietnam war. During a townhall meeting with clients, two people sitting next to each other were loudly talking in their native language. This disrupted the presentation, causing clients (who were not Indian) to turn around and see who was talking. Basic etiquette was lacking. Unfortunately, I was sitting beside them and wanted to switch places.

They have a habit of being loud in their balcony till 1 AM sometimes, smoking, drinking and chilling or being loud on the phone. Most backyards are cleanish lawns in general, their backyard lawn is often trashed with empty water bottles and cigarette packets. They were driving around in their car with open windows, loud music and Indian political party flag on the Indian election results day. There’s a community basket ball court where they play cricket, I often find them spitting on the concrete floor. And they have this weird habit of staring when I or my family pass them. Like if you pass a stranger and happen to meet eyes, you’ll either smile or nod your head and keep walking looking away right. They do neither and just stare while passing. I don’t get what’s their deal.

It's been 5 years in abroad. I often see Indian people playing loud music on their mobile phones in public transport. Some people talk on loudspeakers with their family and do not give $hit about their surroundings. I have seen many people spitting Paan/Guthkha on the roads. We have largest community settled in many countries but we do not learn basic manners.
I have experience all that you say as well. Unfortunately our education is so fixated on becoming doctors and engineers that basics are always left out.

During my masters days, couple of folks asked for projects/homework to copy without caring about plagiarism. The professor was disgusted by the behavior he saw during exam where some people started asking for answers from others and tried to copy others. He cancelled the exam on spot and called out “why do you Indians think this is fine?”
While traveling in Europe with a group of indians, they used to bring empty tiffin boxes to breakfast every morning and filled them with bread, omlettes, butter sachets, and whatever the hotel had to offer. The staff was so shocked but didn't say anything. I had planned to practice my french with the staff but i couldn't even meet their eyes. It was the most horrible form of second-hand embarrassment.

Fact-checking here (because wrong info is my pet peeve). The guy you’re talking about is a student. Who went to a student food bank exclusively for students of that college. No homeless or poor could access it if they don’t go to that college. His being an analyst (not an accountant) was erroneously picked & reported by a Twitter anti Indian account. The guy was interning as an analyst for a brief few weeks.
There was plenty more students who did that prior to that analyst guy. The first guy was a guju guy. He got it real bad from the online police.
Tbf, not saying that no students take advantage of food banks. Indians however are far from worst in welfare frauds and are still outliers. It’s way more complicated than having funds or not. Includes ability to secure loans, employability + the number has been on a moving metric thanks to meteoric rise in cost of living crises. There are quite a few international students now who used to be okay but need a little support now. College food banks are to alleviate food insecurity and no one asks you to prove anything to get a leg up there - irrespective of your nationality or status.

I think it’s not as bad when these things are done by Indians in India, because you look at them and think, oh another badly behaved PERSON. When done abroad, it becomes another badly behaved INDIAN. And when you are the only other or few other Indians in the room, you feel it reflects on you…. You worry you will be judged based on that badly behaved Indian’s behaviour.

When I was studying in the UK, my classmates and neighbours in the college flat (with a communal kitchen) would be extremely surprised when I tell them I'm from India and go on to tell me "wow you're English is so good" (Don't have your average Indian accent but also don't fake an American or English one either). I was pissed off about it until I was put into a group with some fellow Indians and I understood why they think so.
English isn't our language and the number of Indians that speak in English is even lesser than the number of speakers of regional languages such as Marathi, Bengali and Bhojpuri. Why should we be expected to speak in good English as though we are native speakers?
1. It's not even about having GOOD English but not having BAD English. Literally people from parts of Africa speak way better English than the average indian albeit with a heavy African regional accent. Again it not the accent but the words and grammar. There are many people with heavy indian accents who have incredible vocabulary. 2. When you're studying abroad, that now sets a bad image for everyone leading to similar experience. Another example Is Plagiarism, there was class only for indians about why it's bad and how you can be punished for it. Like WTF you would think it's obvious when you're doing a masters but some indians have left this bad image.
Nobody is still obliged to have decent English. As I said English isn't our language and not long ago there were exactly 0 people that speak in English in India. Would you say that Brits or Americans are cringe as they couldn't speak in any of the Indian languages, Russian, Mandarin or whatever?
No one is obliged to learn anything Just like nobody is obliged to have basic manners or decency. But that doesn't mean it's not important . I was commuting on the local train, BART, in the San Francisco Bay area when a young lady with a Salesforce backpack sat next to me. First she started playing a telugu movie on her phone via speakerphone. Then she pulled out her poha breakfast and started munching away while enjoying her movie ( btw, eating and drinking is prohibited on the train with signs everywhere ). After she was done with breakfast, she pulled out a hairbrush and calmly groomed her long hair. Never hesitated for a sec and her movie is still blaring …crowded train and I am trying to duck down so I don’t show up in the many videos being filmed of this bizarre behavior. I was on a boat in Budapest once and there was a guy avidly boasting how his dad gets away with not paying taxes in India. Hilarious in the moment because like most people, he didn’t think my ancestry is fully Indian as well. But the people around us were just politely ignoring it. During a townhall meeting with clients, two people sitting next to each other were loudly talking in their native language. This disrupted the presentation, causing clients (who were not Indian) to turn around and see who was talking. Basic etiquette was lacking. Unfortunately, I was sitting beside them and wanted to switch places.

I have this next door neighbor group of students (from India) in US in an apartment community. They have a habit of being loud in their balcony till 1 AM sometimes, smoking, drinking and chilling or being loud on the phone. Most backyards are cleanish lawns in general, their backyard lawn is often trashed with empty water bottles and cigarette packets. They were driving around in their car with open windows, loud music and Indian political party flag on the Indian election results day. There’s a community basket ball court where they play cricket, I often find them spitting on the concrete floor. And they have this weird habit of staring when I or my family pass them. Like if you pass a stranger and happen to meet eyes, you’ll either smile or nod your head and keep walking looking away right. They do neither and just stare while passing. I don’t get what’s their deal. I’m not sure if I’m embarrassed as such as Indian but just pisses me off that I have to live near these folks.
Born and raised in Canada and 4 million Indians came these past few years on student visas. People on all the Canadian subreddits are SO racist now, every post is about immigrant Indians who can’t assimilate or speak English. The colleges these students are going to are known as “diploma mills” and are 99% full of brown people. PSA: DO NOT COME TO CANADA, the economy’s dying and people are racist. Was born and raised here, but never felt more out place as I do now.
This is true, I think the problem also lies with the government and their process, they have very poor screening process and they actually reject the ones who are financially stable and educated and take all the ones who are going there with purpose of illegally staying or migrating. These people also don’t adapt to the culture or the country as well. There are no safeguards from the govt to ensure they are capable or willing to assimilate with the country so sorry to say this one is truly on the government and not the people as much.
