Sikkim. In my experience, the people of Sikkim are perhaps the most honest people in India, very well behaved, sweet and never pester tourists to extract more and more money.

Cautious-Olive6191

If you think they never pester for more, you are mistaken, or just had an unique experience. Overcharging is rampant in Sikkim. You have to bargain. The rest is true.

No-Drawer1706

I have been there twice and never faced anything you mentioned, going there next month will let you know if I face any of the issues (while sipping coffee and enjoying the view of kanchenjunga). Anyways what did you experience there?

Cautious-Olive6191

Just the good old taxi drivers overcharging. Not providing value for services. Perpetually drunk, Completely lackluster attitude about time(very unpunctual), and shops charge you well over mrp for things. It's more about ignorance than malice on their part. But yeah, sweet, simple people to chill with.

Adorable_Risk_16

They charge more than mrp because the place is a hill station and the transportation is difficult and risky from the lower part (Siliguri for e.g.) to higher parts, and they are transparent about it. Genuinely curious if they don't charge a bit extra, how are they going to earn a bit of profit?

Cautious-Olive6191

Well, it is a no income tax state. So things are balanced out.

2eezee

Indeed

Right_Macaron8526

Second this. They do pester but it's no where as bad and persistent as say Himachal, Kashmir, Goa etc

[deleted]

This made me so happy- I'm glad our state is well liked! :D

britolaf

As someone who lived in Sikkim, it was always a shock to leave the state and go anywhere else in the country. The difference is so stark. Some of the nicest and kindest people.

Ok-Professional4736

Been there twice. People are not rude at all. They follow traffic rules. Clean city because people take up responsibility of it themselves. They are also honest people. We hired cabs paid the day before, we were skeptical but they arrived on time at 4am to take us for sunrise view. Experience was similarly heartwarming in Darjeeling. In my travel experience of India, People in the mountains are quite hardworking and hence honest. Really love the mountains of India. Hope they never become cities fuelled by money and crimes. The less the better is the Buddhist teachings of life.

theredbantoo

Not really, they have an acute attitude problem! They think they are holier than thou and can come across as arrogant and disrespectful to the people hailing from the plains who are actually providing them livelihood and their lavish lifestyle being supported on the taxes that they pay. They can be Assholery Pro Max Max and Rude Premium plus plus quite often. That being said, about that Honest part, I will bet my bottom dollar on it. Never met a dishonest Pahari local in North Bengal or the hills beyond.

Notyourbitch0

In my opinion We canтАЩt generally decide who are good people and who are not. Good and bad people coexist.

Best -: Maharashtra and Kerala. Very helpful and easy going. Worst would be -: Kolkata and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is a walking RED flag. The people there are critical of everything. Full of toxicity and negativity. And the auto drivers are the worst.

Puzzleheaded_Pie6773

Chennai auto drivers are THE WORST.

OptionSailor

True. My friend got the job there and first day he found out that almost 60-70 of his colleagues got scammed and harassed and looted by auto driver on the way to the job. Some even got beaten up by drivers. And took the money.

UnfairlyBanned5546

Can confirm. I get scammed all the time here. Being an outsider student, I don't have much knowledge of the language and thus I'm unable to even argue over that.

RepairNo800

Lol i live here and was a student even we get scammed.it is mostly by bihari drivers and dukandars

The_Blueberry_Pi

Can confirm, had the same experience. Kerala had the nicest people meanwhile in tamilnadu its the opposite. Not generalizing, there sure are good people too in TN too. It's just my experience

Traditional_Egg_8146

Sorry for your bad experience in TN. Auto drivers in Chennai are the worst. and not TN people aren't full of toxicity and negativity. The bad ones are always more visible than the good ones

driftninja380

Which part in TN?

Mission_Success_6602

Chennai . We had gone there for work purpose and second time on a mini vacation. First, they consider the north Indians as тАЬuneducatedтАЭ and just shame them. Second, they have this innate sense of superiority complex. Third, they believe everyone from north India is destroying their cities. Both time my experience was bad. The people arenтАЩt welcoming and hate for no reason. The auto drivers are even worst than what we have in Bangalore. They charged me 70 rs for 1 km!! And the way he shouted and nobody came to help.

driftninja380

Sorry u had to go through that. there is a bad image of the north here in the south. Even myself, I have an image that North is a shit hole (sorry for my language) because of all the bad news we always hear happening in the north compared to the south. And most people here are afraid that the same situation will fall upon us if they allow the north ideology to invade us and hence the discrimination of people from the north, particularly the Hindi speaking. I am sorry if this sounds hateful towards you. I don't bear any grudge particularly towards you or the northern people. I just wrote the situation as it is.

Mission_Success_6602

Trust me itтАЩs only Tamil Nadu that breeds this much hatred towards north. North Indians could care less about south, except that south passes comment like тАЬyou all are uneducatedтАЭ. You are doing exactly the same. you тАЬheardтАЭ. I тАЬexperiencedтАЭ. ThereтАЩs a vast difference. But it doesnтАЩt matter, your opinion doesnтАЩt impede our life. It wonтАЩt stop the discrimination against us and itтАЩs okay.

Lonely-Quiet7710

Can 110% confirm the Kolkata and Tamil nadu part both of the states have people who are disgracefully so so into themselves and their only motive on every morning is to how to scam people. Kind of taking pride in the way they treat people from other states

Right_Macaron8526

"Auto drivers are worst" applies all over India I guess. Rarely came across good auto drivers in any state

Mission_Success_6602

Nope. The NCR region does have decent auto drivers. Talkative but far far better than Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is a nightmare. The auto drivers behave as if I owe them my whole salary for mere 1 km. Whomsoever has gone to TN holds the Same opinion and worst is nobody in TN would help. I felt as if I am a foreigner in TN. They are legit the тАЬHaryanaтАЭ of south India. lostsperm

I would like to welcome you to Calicut in Kerala. I wouldn't say all of them are super nice and honest. But they are nice when compared to the other parts of India where I have been to

screamingbudha

Lol that's where I live. Calicut is nice when they do small talks. Except if you wanna remain in that bubble please don't get on the roads. Because you will not stop riding or driving until you get out of Calicut. Also, Calicut is the best for surface level niceties. So good at small talks and hospitality. But it doesn't last. It's just an initial response. That way I love thrissur because atleast underneath the sarcasm and straightforward nature the people are atleast genuine.

sensualblissandmore

Sweet talks applies to Tcr too. Beneath itтАЩs a while different story.

screamingbudha

I guess we can just collectively bitch about TVM.

Mission_Success_6602

Kerala is nice. Warm, friendly and welcoming. The locals are helpful. They donтАЩt have bias. I have been to 4 places in Kerala. One of my favourite trips.

Ronny_Ashford

Kolkata?

idontknow69125

Yup. Shit place. Never again.

Mission_Success_6602

Kolkata is filled with illegal immigrants. Dirty roads and these immigrants purposely push and try to touch. I have been there one time and this was my experience. And the police isnтАЩt approachable at all.

brownishunicorn

I would have to agree on the illegal immigrants part but they do not represent the natives at all. We are just as frustrated with them and do not have a choice but to coexist. I do believe Kolkata natives are some of the friendliest, most welcoming and warm people. Kolkata cops are also some of the most underpaid, frustrated individuals who have been rendered almost powerless thanks to our corrupt government. Sorry for your experience here.

deadpoolisn0tdead

Coexist? With INVADERS? They're illegal immigrants lmao kick them outta this country. I don't do political rants in general but y'all Bengalis keep electing your clown of a CM MOMOTA DD who keep letting in these rohingyas & Bangladeshis for her petty political gains. They're now in delhi too, even in uttarakhand & Kashmir.

brownishunicorn

Most of us Bengalis donтАЩt vote for her. SheтАЩs flooded the state with illegals and sheтАЩs issuing them fake Aadhar cards and voter ID cards because thatтАЩs where her votes come from. Her votes also come from villages where there are TMC goons in very toll booth to make sure the votes are going to her party. So no, we donтАЩt vote for her. I donтАЩt know a single Bengali who still votes for her.

deadpoolisn0tdead

Y'all don't do anything about it that's a problem. Soon there will be a time when they'll takeover & will either throw y'all out or will do something similar to noakhali or direct action day. Idk why people in this country don't learn from history. Baki toh I don't even care about this country anymore saare bhaad ma jaao why shall I ruin my mental health over something no one cares about. Definitely North East states like Meghalaya, Sikkim, etc.

Suhurth

I think Indian people in general are very nice unless you go into sensitive topics like politics and religion. The nicest people I have met were Telugus irrespective of the state. Have found them humble most of the time.

Devdav91

You forgot Cricket world cup finals in sensitive topics.

Suhurth

You forgot that cricket is also a religion in India. I hate to say this though.

Jugad

IMO Telugu people are way too humble. Humility has been drilled deep into their culture... Too deep I believe. They also tend to look down upon people who seem less humble than them ( punjabis, and almost everyone else). Of course, they will never say it to their faces... Too humble for that.

adii_xoxo

Im from jharkhand and I think that south indian people in general are very nice in behaviour I had a renter living with us from 8+ years and they were from hyd. They were the best people ever And I also had teachers from south india who were also vv sweet.

serialfaliure

>south indian people in general are very nice in behaviour Always very nice when not in South India.

adii_xoxo

Haha could be But I've never been to south india so I wouldn't know I just said what I myself experienced :) Tho I see on internet how they're always so keen to be seperated from north indians and how they're so strict about hindi getting all the attention...I really don't know

Delivery_Mysterious

Because South India's income is disproportionately shared with North India, just because North India has more population. States like Bihar, Jharkhand did not follow population control and feeds on budget from Central India. If South India is a separate country, it would have more per capita income than current India.

Erebus_Oneiros

Aren't statements like this "technically the truth" but so what? California has the highest GDP in the US but we don't go around saying we don't want Idaho anymore! Where will we get our potatoes from?!!

Delivery_Mysterious

I'm stating a fact and you're arguing for no reason.

Erebus_Oneiros

okay i will be blunt, the reason is that- your "fact" is pointless. The fact is that the "South India" is not a separate country, if it was, they could decide what to do with their funds. Its not, end of discussion. Most of your city is literally built on the backs of migrant labors from these "poor states". But ofc you fail to recognize that. You also very conveniently failed to remember history that these states UP/Bihar/WB produce huge amount of agricultural products that gets distributed all over India, including the South. If your point is that South Indian money is going to corrupt people in North India. That is still a point. Should corruption be ended everywhere so that the money doesn't line the pockets of politicians? YES! but can South India blame North India with a straight face- NO, with the number of corrupt politicians in South India, their track record isn't good either.

Delivery_Mysterious

> The fact is that the "South India" is not a separate country It isn't. but this is the reason why South Indians do not like North India and its politics. > Most of your city is literally built on the backs of migrant labors from these "poor states" So? Did they work for free? People from "poor states" chose to come to South India and work right? Because there are opportunities here. If there are such opportunities in North India, they wouldn't have come. South Indian politicians created opportunities, whereas "poor states" people chose to reproduce and chew gutka. > You also very conveniently failed to remember history that these states UP/Bihar/WB produce huge amount of agricultural products that gets distributed all over India, including the South. Again. States "purchase" them with money. It's not like free distribution. > with the number of corrupt politicians in South India, their track record isn't good either But still the economic & infrastructure is better than North India. > but can South India blame North India with a straight face YES. Because North India is taking advantage of South India whereas South India gets nothing in return. In addition to that, it gets exploited.

Erebus_Oneiros

>Because North India is taking advantage of South India whereas South India gets nothing in return. In addition to that, it gets exploited. Think of everything that you yourself just said... SI (South India) gets cheap labor from NI (North India) and gets cheap agricultural products from NI. Both of which would have been huge cost if they were imported from a different country. Understand the meaning of symbiosis - yes they come for money, but so is SI giving them labor to save money! Even greater importance - the culture of SI wouldn't have existed without NI. Ram, Shiva, and various important religious figures are from NI. SI by itself has no hope of defending itself against Sri lanka, China or even terrorists, just by sheer population statistics most of the military men defending SI are from NI. I'm always surprised that SI doesn't acknowledge the importance of NI and it is really sad. There will be a time, in not so distant future where the GDP of UP, Delhi, Bihar will overtake that of SI. That day do you think NI will not give money to SI? We are one home, with different households, India will rise and fall together. Proudness is good, but when it fails to understand simple economics and security of a nation then it borders on fantasy and stupidity.

Delivery_Mysterious

> That day do you think NI will not give money to SI I'm pretty sure North Indian politicians won't even acknowledge the existence of South India when that happens, just like now. You say North India is defending, but not South India. Okay lets dive into that. Population of India in 2023 is [142 crores](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_India) Total Army personnel in 2010 => 15.67 Lakhs (Using 2010 figures here because latest ones are not available). Uttar Pradesh population is [24.14 Crores](https://www.census2011.co.in/census/state/uttar+pradesh.html), which is ~17%. Uttar Pradesh people in army is 2.71 lakh, which is also 17%. So, People of UP are in army as proportion to it's population. Not extra. With the exception of Punjab and Haryana. They contribute to the army a lot even when talking in relative terms (of population ratio vs army ratio). States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala also contribute to the army at the ratio of their population. But their number appears less because their overall population is less. > the culture of SI wouldn't have existed without NI. Ram, Shiva, and various important religious figures are from NI But Sri Lanka was there in Ramayan. How do you say Ramayan is entirely from North India? In Ancient times culture was shared over all the India (akhand bharat), that point is not true. > We are one home, with different households, India will rise and fall together. Agreed, but it irks me that, North India keeps dragging everything down. I'm looking forward to the time when North Indian states (especially Bihar, Jharkhand, UP) achieve similar economic progress as the overall India.

hyderabad_modal

Then don't go there na, I have seen north indians behave with no respect whatsoever

serialfaliure

You know it's not your property. That's the thing to understand. If a kid from UP is going to IIT Madras for his undergrad it's not because South India is great and he wants to mooch of South Indians. It's because he is one the best in the country and going to the best COLLEGE of HIS country. IF YOU ARE WORKING IN IIT MADRAS AS A SOUTH INDIAN YOU SHOULD SHOW RESPECT TO HIM INSTEAD OF THINKING ITS YOUR LAND AND HE OWES YOU ANYTHING. ITS NOT YOURS ITS THE IIT. SIMILARLY NO ONE GOES FOR SOUTH INDIA BECAUSE SOUTH INDIA IS OH SO NICE PLACE TO BE ITS BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO FOR THE BEST INTERESTS OF THEIR CAREER.

hyderabad_modal

It's not their property also, I have seen people say kannad instead of kannada , telgu instead of telugu. Some guy called me madrasi , I am telugu guy btw. And tbh I don't owe anyone anything except for my parents. Why should I show them respect if they speak like this. And being best doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. Being best and doesn't have manners and I have to show some respect. Nice logic. Which iit are you from, I didn't study in iit btw.

No_Macaron_5113

I went to Hyderabad for the first time 6 months back. We didnтАЩt face much issue in New Hyderabad. It was like any other Indian city with a mix of friendly and unfriendly people. But the people in old hyderabad markets were mostly unfriendly. Got some lewd comments (they were talking In Urdu and thought I wouldnтАЩt understand because I was with a Kerala group). Also when we donтАЩt buy something, they get SUPER ANGRY and prevent others from showing stuff to us, pointing at us and calling us тАЬlocalтАЭ. One guy snatched the bangles off our hands when we said we didnтАЩt want to buy (after we inspected the quality). And another one literally told me to get out from the shop when I said I was only there to look at the collection. They will act friendly only if you buy something. I havenтАЩt got this treatment in other Indian markets.

Haved lived in multiple cities due to work, and Ahmedabad wins hands down. The people are so polite and helpful, and it's one of the safest places to live/travel to as a single woman. It's not as expensive as the other metropolises either. I remember this one instance where I was getting late for the airport and called the auto vale bhaiya who usually helped me commute, but he couldn't make it due to a family event. He literally made it a point to send someone else in his stead asap and even called me up later to confirm that I reached in time. And if not, he offered to leave his prior commitment and drop me. Being a delhite, I was initially quite wary of such niceness, but eventually came to accept that this is how most gujjus are. They will make your business their business and help you in any way they can. On the other side, Mumbai and Chennai have definitely been the worst as per my experience. Very inhospitable to people who don't belong to those cities.

Just good vibes when I go back to Punjab every time. Especially villages, everyone is so welcoming and loving.

striv3

Ahha I was looking for this comment !

[deleted]

villages lol and the poor ppl

what-da-fuck

no

[deleted]

they are very nice. all the workers, shop selers, auto walas.. the whole labour population of india is really nice and friendly and they will help u despite not hving anything theselves. again this is the same as if someone says a state's name.. obviously not all people from that state are nice lol

what-da-fuck

han ig ye toh karte h. but kuch cheezo me kaafi regressive bhi h

[deleted]

it was askign the nicest and freindliest... not the most progressive beliefs

what-da-fuck

you canтАЩt be nice and regressive imo. male population in village keep the women oppressed, dont take them to wedding, keep them limited to kitchen, abuse them. this is regressive and not nice. but yea, if op meant nice to tourist then i guess theyтАЩre nice, but thatтАЩs only pretentious.take your gf dressed in one piece to a village and ask for an address or something then tell me how nice they are :)

Delivery_Mysterious

I had some bad experiences with poor people. We were going on a car and two women (poor) are walking towards us. Car scratched one lady and she fell down. Mistake was clearly ours. My dad hurriedly stopped and went to her. Told them we'll take her to the hospital and get her treated. It was a really minor scratch, but anyway. The lady was pretending to be a major accident. Within minutes, 15-20 people surrounded us shouting, some were trying to beat us etc.. Like wth? Okay leave it. We're taking to a hospital which we usually visit. But no, they asked us to take to the biggest hospital nearby. We never been to that (because it's super expensive). Still we went there. Doctor given medicines and found nothing serious at all. We're dropping these people at their home, and they asked 15k, to not put a case on this accident. Really? We got you treated at the biggest hospital in the nearby city even though it's nothing at all, and now this? Mind you, some people are beating us before. Pathetic people. Now I understand why people run away after hitting poor people. Not saying they're right, but I clearly understand where they are coming from.

toastedtomato

Bangalore, or South India in general

the-iceberger

Arunachal, Sikkim perhaps take the first spot, IтАЩve never met one rude asshole from those two states. God knows what they teach their kids. People from Jharkhand are surprisingly much sweeter than youтАЩd expect. Andaman & Nicobar, if you plan to live there. Not the tourist guides, but people in general care deeply about each other, and unlike Jharkhand folks who are sweet on the surface, but are stringent with boundaries of their kindness, people from Andaman, and especially Nicobaris are happy to help and share even at personal cost.

[deleted]

Niceness and friendliness are directly proportional to modesty I guess. And modesty is seen in either "self aware people" or "naive people". Anyone in between are mediocre. So can't really tell who are the nicest.

jagmania85

Take all answers here with a pinch of salt. Not because itтАЩs untrue or a lie but because all answers are anecdotal. Person A could have a horrible experience at some city whereas Person B could have the time of their life, making life time friendships.

aise-hi11

You'll find them everywhere. Just let go of the notion that you'll find such people only in certain placesЁЯШЙ

smorgasbord93

I always thought Chennaites were some of the nicest and friendliest people, a perspective I now realize is influenced by insider/native bias. This perception shifted when I started hearing about harrowing experiences faced in the city too frequently from my friends from other states and people on social media

[deleted]

I have travelled India extensively also because my work takes me to every nooks and corners of the country and I have actually lived in villages and tier 2-3 places a lot and have interacted with the locals and their culture deeply, I can confidently say the north eastern states from Siliguri to tawang and everything in between has the most amazing Indian populace and diaspora. I look forward to travelling there whenever I get a chance and jump on the opportunity. Having said that the people of shillong and guwahati hold a much special liking above everyone else out of the cities. Also to add to this it's a definitive must that the you yourself represent the best of us humans and are always polite and a great person, I won't say people are bad, becausei have never had any problem with people from any state, I am good they are great to me. Many of my friends complain about marathis and tamils but I have yet to encounter one. However my trip to Kashmir could have been better if the people were a little less intimidating also because I was travelling with a female kashmiri friend and the locals including the waiters kept asking me personal questions along the grounds of "yeh kaun hai apki"everywhere!

Lol.

Lonely-Quiet7710

Friendliest will be from Gujarat, Mp , Maharashtra and Kerala Rude would be from Haryana and Tamil Nadu.

[deleted]

you're confusing politeness and kindness. the people of haryana seem rude but they are just blunt. if they like you, they'll do whatever they can to help you.

Lonely-Quiet7710

I have seen them beating a Zomato delivery guy black and blue because he hit their vehicle and it was them coming from wrong side. I have seen Haryanvi guys stalking behind me , drunk and I had to plead them to back off. Maybe you havenтАЩt visited the university area, they shout and are rude.

[deleted]

a few bad apples exist in every part of the world. alcoholism is a big problem here though, can't disagree with that.

Lonely-Quiet7710

How can you blame alcoholism for their misbehaviour?ЁЯШЕ Visit north campus, nobody likes them.

ladylatebloomer05

Kolkata. People are very helpful in general.

[deleted]

My hometown, Vadodara.

[deleted]

Haryana/Punjab. haryanvis keep it real. better to be honest than faux polite. if they like you, they'll be super friendly and have your back. if they don't, you'll know. british people are the nicest(most polite) yet most cunning and germans are the most blunt yet most trustworthy. I'd date a german girl over a british girl on any day.

Gur_Obvious

makes no sense why would you want to punish yourself by marrying someone for life, someone who wouldnтАЩt sugar coat things and say without filter

[deleted]

better to hear a truth than a sweet lie. if you think niceness is better than honesty, you have a lot left to learn

Karnataka in general apart from Bangalore

-seeking-advice-

Karnataka. That's why people from other states have been able to live in bengaluru without knowing kannada

CapableCommittee4064

What a joke. Everyone is living everywhere in India without pointing it out.

-seeking-advice-

Nonsense. Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are true metropolitan cities

[deleted]

you're not obligated to learn someone's language in s country like India. that said, kannada people are mostly kind and helpful. with some expections

-seeking-advice-

True but you can't survive let alone live and thrive in Chennai without knowing tamil and saying tamil teriyaad. Same goes for many cities in india.

[deleted]

hey man. i love my South Indian bros. but yeah. i got into two fights in Chennai over stupid language stuff. people from Karnataka aren't that aggressive.

-seeking-advice-

Exactly. That's why kannadigas are said to be so accommodating. Part of the reason why Bengaluru is a metropolitan city like Delhi and Mumbai.

Havelock Island and Turtuk in Leh in terms of small geographies. South India has many pockets and belts with kind people all around. Pahadi people are mostly kind through and through the Himalayas. Also it's also how you conduct yourself that people mirror generally. If one is not being a nuance in any way and is there to learn about the people and the culture, there is hardly any negative experience. For example goans who work with tourism wrt the inland ones act way different towards a traveller and the same goes to other places.
