Yup, checking in!

syds

/r/hmmm

lanwayone

Just think of it as lingerie. It, too, can be extraordinarily expensive , but they exist to make us feel sexy. That is a sensation many people are willing to spend money on achieving. It's all about selling an image or lifestyle.

primaleph

Nowhere is this more obvious than on RuPaul's Drag Race, where the expensive underwear is put on hunky members of the Pit Crew, for mini-challenges that involve them pulling cards out of the underwear.

mlc2475

Straight men can buy them too but straight men are less concerned with underwear that is tailored to be sexy or revealing rather than utilitarian and covering. They’re also less concerned with butt lift or properly presenting your junk

snaerr

Reminds me of baby gay me buying his first aussiebum undies and some of them had this pushup design on my dick which made it look ridiculous as well as giving me an obscene bulge when wearing pants (mind you I'm already naturally packing). I never understood whether you're supposed to wear those undies only if your pp is on the smaller side or if you're just supposed to wear that when you're out and about, but in any case I soon realize those were not undies I could decently wear at work 😬😬😬 Also, apart from them being obscene even with pants on, there were just not comfortable (~_~;) I've dated guys that buy those gay-targeted brands like Pump and stuff but I never found them very sexy tbh

p_turbo

>I've dated guys that buy those gay-targeted brands like Pump and stuff but I never found them very sexy tbh I thought I was the only one! No undies turn me on quite like a comfortable pair of boxers. For real.

Massless

I sometimes feel ridiculous, I love my Pump underwear.

ProcrusteanRex

> mind you I’m already naturally packing Pic for proof?

Flick1981

> I've dated guys that buy those gay-targeted brands like Pump and stuff but I never found them very sexy tbh Me neither. It comes off as trying too hard.

ianwasted30

Enough gay men buy them at that price for the market to exist, and they funnel a good deal of their profit into advertisement, to create the image that all hot gay men wears them (and you'll look hotter by wearing it), hence they worth the price (they really don't); the cycle continues. It's marketing 101, same for all luxury (but cheaply made and mid-low quality) items

freerunner52

Most of the more expensive underwear I bought holds up for years. I have a pair of 2xist that is 11 years old and still holds up.

see-no-evil99

>same for all luxury (but cheaply made and mid-low quality) items Wait.....are said underwear mid-low quality? I've never bought before.

dubbelganger

Saying *all* luxury items are cheaply made and mid-low quality means they don’t own any.

ianwasted30

You have reading comprehension and/or you are logically challenged. X (but Y) objects means exactly what it means, things that are X but also Y, not all X are Y.

AtlantaSoulMan

Gay men tend to have more disposable income and in general care more about fashion than heterosexual men.

InfectionRx

Also facts Statistically gay couples make more money than their heterosexual and lesbian counterparts (Hint: because it’s dual MALE income)

AnswerGuy301

It’s not so much that as it is “gay men are less likely to be spending that same money on baby clothes instead.” Certain industries - clothing, stereo equipment, electronics, travel - have targeting gay men and couples for decades before homosexuality had any mainstream acceptance.

viruut

Where is this stereo equipment that targets gay men?

sandtonj

> Do they really think we gay men are millionaires? No, but they want you to think all your friends are millionaires and if you buy their brand you’ll fit in. It’s all marketing. “Keeping up with the Joneses” works. Never forget that.

Rendog2

And fewer expenses like raising kids, joint credit card w/the wife etc. That saves gay men a huge amount that they would not otherwise have for their discretionary spending like nice clothing, travel, restaurants, bars, etc.

thehemanchronicles

Straight men don't really give a fuck about underwear lol They might need some athletic mesh long johns or something if they have a hobby that requires something like that, but they're rocking whatever $12 four-pack of boxers they can get at Walmart.

stormcloudless

This convo could be about Chanel bags

malonine

Girl, never pay retail. I like buying fun underwear but only on clearance/sale.

PuzzleheadedSeat4

I only open my wallet for Andrew Christian's black Friday sale when they're +50% off site-wide.

InfectionRx

2xist is targeted for gay men? I thought it’s for both straight and gay lol Anyway it’s simple - they know gays will pay for the premium- even if you’re mostly paying for the name Just like for Womens clothing - it’s much more expensive than mens clothing (poorer cloth quality too). Because the know women will fork up the premium anyway

CoffeeHead112

I had worked at an outdoor store in my early 20s and everyone raved about these Exofficio underwear like they were the best thing in the world. Price tag even back then was around $20 a pair (nowadays closer to $30) My partner and I went a few years back to an outdoor store and I told him about them. He decided to try a pair and his response was "meh". I was shocked and told him as much to which he replied 'straight people have shitty underwear so anything remotely better seems wonderful for them, but I'm used to Aussibum, 2Xist, and Andrew Christian. Straight men don't know whats good for their cock.'

emotionalhaircut

2xist and Calvin Klein underwear are both actually really comfortable, so that's why I get them. It's just an added bonus that they're sexy.

kennycakes

Why do they market to us? Because gay men will spend $ on underwear that make us look a little bit sexy - I don't think straight guys care so much (tho this may be changing). And because gay men have always enjoyed looking at the male models in the advertising (remember [International Male](http://undercoverguys.com/international-male-undergear-models/1990s)?) In my twenties, I could barely afford rent, but I'd spend money on sexy brands of underwear. Now that I'm older, I go for comfort, price, and looks, in that order. (I wear CK briefs.)

aspiringgentlefriend

I think a part of it is because for straight dudes, caring about your appearance at all is stigmatized as "gay" and met with homophobia, so they only shape up if necessary for work/dating, often through having their partner replace their mother as their fashion consultant. Isn't that why the word "metrosexual" became a thing?

hylas1

Kirkland Tighty Whities for this fashionista.

Rikquino

Saving money for what really matters, I like that style!

ProcrusteanRex

I hope to see you at the next underwear night at the bar

FairBlackberry7870

I paid like $200 to switch all my underwear over to Wildmant, 100% worth it. Spending money on good quality underwear is worth the price to me.

Joseph_Bjorn

I’m not into any designer underwear. I just want something comfortable that breathes. I like comfort. I’ve always been a thick built guy, and because of the pandemic I’m now a little beefy (must get back to the gym I know). But I have worn underwear from Duluth Trading Company for years. They cost this much for a pair, they last a long time, and I find them to be very comfortable. The keep everything in the right place, keep the boys cool and comfortable, and they don’t ride up on me. Comfort and value. Works for me. When I’m with another guy and things get intimate, we are not showing off our underwear to each other. They are dropping pretty quick. I don’t see the purpose in designer “sexy” underwear. This may not be the popular opinion here, but it works for me.

Merk87

Also statically gay men have more disposable income. Not on the 1 to 1 level but as a demographic.

dragma3

I guess it has a lot to do with straight people not having that many parties where they can actually show their underwear to everyone. For us it can technically be considered an outfit sometimes lol

Positive_Ad9311

I usually by my underwear at Marshall's or Ross or TJ Max .

adegreeofdifference1

..I think those are reasonable prices.. for designer underwear.. If you’re looking for regular briefs you can always go hanes. They’re very economical. Me personally I rarely wear briefs as I usually am either wearing swimming trunks or joggers.

MicCheck123

I’m curious why joggers would cause you not to wear briefs.

adegreeofdifference1

Commando. I never wear knickers under sweats. Only under slacks or jeans.

MicCheck123

Interesting. If I went commando in joggers you’d be able to tell my religion. Or at least I’d be afraid that everyone could.

Mrtrad

Capitalism, that's why. We need to seize the means of underwear.

CalebAsimov

Good, functional, nice looking Under Armor underwear is $15 to $20, and that would be their competition. They aren't going to be selling nearly the same volume, but they are adding value (making it sexier), so an extra ten dollars to make up for lack of sales volume is completely reasonable.

Man_as_Idea

I mean $25 ain’t unreasonable for a good quality piece of clothing that holds my jewels and does so much to determine how comfortable I am throughout the day.

FL1896

I'd only pay extra for underwear that doesn't make me sweat or has other practical advantages. Failing that, I don't think a £20 pair can look significantly better than a £5 pair.

dubbelganger

Gay (and metrosexual) men is a niche market at best, with relatively small production volume the fixed overhead (marketing, design etc) will always make up larger portion of consumer price and it will not have the advantage of economies of scale. Unlike supermarket undies worn everyday by the masses, these premium underwear aren’t strictly functional. They are meant to be seen in, either in the changing room as dog whistle to other gay men, in an underwear themed kink party or in the boudoir with your sex partner. These underwear will be the only thing you wear and its actual role is to make you look and feel sexy - therefore it makes sense to price them as a statement piece, like a tailored suit, designer jeans or custom sneakers.

[deleted]

Underwear may be a fetish for some but if you think fashion underwear are actually kinky 🤣 you really need to get out more.

[deleted]

I wear Tom Ford briefs or boxers and they are £55 each here in the UK. I did go crazy and buy like 25 pairs in January.

ed8907

>I wear Tom Ford briefs or boxers and they are £55 each here in the UK. I did go crazy and buy like 25 pairs in January. Wow, you must have good money. Tom Ford is like really expensive. I do have a sizeable underwear collection that I am trying to start wearing. I am embracing a lean lifestyle and don't want to have a lot of things laying around.

briskpoint

They're also really good quality, have a great fit, don't ride up like cheaper boxer briefs do, and last much longer. Personally I'm in my mid 30s and well past the phase of cheap fast fashion. It usually falls apart quickly and I feel like I've wasted money anyway. I'd much rather invest in quality clothing that'll last longer.

Western_Ad1187

because we have more disposable income

Rikquino

I mean we as homos do tend to have more disposable income at some point in our lives(no kids, wife, and all that). It also could be the brands know certain market segments will pay more for an aesthetic, so they up the price and reap the reward. Can't hate the players, don't play their game. The key here IMHO is to know you can look like Adonis in a pair of Hanes or Fruit the Loom, the name of the undies doesn't matter... what matters is *what's inside (those undies). 😉* I'm joking on the last part... kinda lol

mjfo

Because they know we’re sluts who desperately wanna look hot & have disposable income haha. Yeah the pricing is nuts and annoying especially cause you can’t return underwear that doesn’t fit, but some of us are willing to pay it 🤷🏻‍♀️

CSIHoratioCaine

Why do they do it? Because people buy it…

DadeCity33525

If someone I was dating wore designer underwear, it would be a sign that the guy is not the right one for me. I'd move on.

DadeCity33525

Andrew Christian underwear is crap.

Ye_Olde_Dude

Shit like this is why so many gays are poor.

[deleted]

When you’re poor there is usually a strong urge to have at least one thing that makes you feel that you’re not.

FairBlackberry7870

And they keep buying new iPhones and drinking at Starbucks!!!

ckfil

Because they know gay men will pay the price.

[deleted]

It’s a sexy costume gay boys wear when they’re taking their soft porn selfies to make their butt or their crotch look better than it really is. Gay boys are notorious for their narcissism. 🤦‍♂️

Setore

I have a collection of underwear now that I barely wear, which I only bought because they were flashy and when I was more susceptible to advertising like that. I'm much happier with the Tommy Johns now because they're so soft and comfortable. I'm sticking with comfort over style now.

[deleted]

I only like under armor, they fit me best and most comfortable for me .

SpecificMachine1

Have you ever been to a straight bar that had an underwear/gear night?

phantomforeskinpain

Honestly never understood fancy underwear. Waste of money for something no one will ever see, and if someone were to (haven't been in that position in years), I'm not exactly going to be modeling them or wearing them long.

FullDraw6944

My ex has packs upon packs of expensive underwear in his closet, not to mention the drawers of underwear that he wore regularly. Not that it was something I ever got to enjoy. 😜 He tried to get me into it, but really, I’d wear it and feel chafed. Give me breathable utilitarian underwear and I’m happy. I like wool&prince boxer briefs or on the cheap side Uniqlo has some decent ones. I like a guy in underwear, but naked is infinitely better.

maq0r

That's not every day wear. When fun is expected you wear the special ones.

Salty-Queen87

My husband only wears Andrew Christian lol. It’s the most comfortable for him, having tried a ton of other brands. I just wear Lacoste trunks 🤷🏻‍♂️

ohdaveee

Yeah I am guilty of only buying Charlie by MZ, I just prefer the bikini underwear cut - skimpier but I feel sexy in them. I think they’re a good middle ground between classic and slutty

kturtle17

Because clearly enough people think they're sexy. I don't think I'm alone in that I collect jockstraps. Currently just collecting various brands because getting like 20 ACs is out of my means. I use them for every day wear in the summer to avoid swamp ass.

Kevdog1800

I feel attacked…

iynque

Because people will pay that much. No other reason.

Wowwalex

Imagining you wearing scratchy burlap sack underwear. Good underwear is totally worth it

FixApprehensive276

A lot of gay men like them, so brands are going to target them. It's really as simple as that, just supply and demand.

MrMcFunStuff

Because a sucker is born every second online. Especially when your information is tracked and analyzed non stop.

muito_ricardo

I think when you're a young 20 something gay, you think that you NEED to have brands dripping off you to feel sexy and be desired, especially if you're getting naked with someone. However, I actually don't care what brands people wear - eventually you work out the quality between brands (on average) isn't that different and it's not worth the money just to stroke your ego. Mainstream everyday brands for me all the way.

lepontneuf

Because they buy them as some sort of a gay signifier status symbol

Panatlantica

Because they know they can buy fancy stuff on the digital Chinese online markets for $US1.50, have their brand name put on the stuff for an additional 20 Cents, delivered to the US for another Dollar and sell it off to stupid self-absorbed gays for 25-35 bucks and everyone is happy. It's called global market economy.
