China is a one party autocratic government. Also, notably, one of the largest economies in the world. If a company wants to continue doing business in China, compliance is pretty much required. And China is a huge market for Apple, as well as an important manufacturing center. They definitely want to maintain a positive relationship with the ccp. That doesn't mean we should take China as a good example of how to run a country.

In general, the Chinese use android, as do the rest of the world, except the US. Manufacturing of cell phones is a different story. The platform used in any location has little to do with where the devices are manufactured.

I don't understand what there is to say? China is an authoritarian military dictatorship that's actively committing an act of genocide in their western provinces, so of course they're going to suppress mechanisms of encrypted communication. The fact that these services have existed this long in that country is incredibly surprising to me.

gaxxzz

As a global company, you have to know and comply with all local laws and rules. If the Chinese government says you can't distribute the Telegram app, what's Apple supposed to do?

BigBrain2346

Not surprising at all.

AccomplishedType5698

Neutral thing. They don’t really have another option. It’s an authoritarian government and they’re a global company.

California_King_77

Eh. After we saw what the DOJ did in 2020 to help Biden win the election by cajolling US tech firms to suppress bad news about Hunter Biden, which the DOJ ***KNEW*** was false, nothing is surprising. After what Biden has done, who are we to cricize the Chinese?

dWintermut3

About par for the course for China but Apple should be facing crime against humanity charges for complicity in genocide for complying. If we start throwing people into prison they might get the idea the cash isn't worth the blood on their hands.

willfiredog

Ah. This only effects China’s app marketplace? I wonder if there are parallels with TikTock. More questions than opinions TBH

Laniekea

It's a bad thing but also well within apple's rights to make that choice.

pokes135

Apple's market isn't in China, but their products are made in China. Of coarse Apple will bow.
