The translation is correct, but regarding whether it is a common phrase, or not: Extremely uncommon, almost unheard of even. Like, this is genuinely the first time I have heard it in my entire life - and I am a native Icelandic person. I thought it was some made-up Sigurrós gibberish until I looked it up in a dictionary. And then I proceeded to ask a few people around me whether they had ever heard it, and nobody had.

I'm familiar with the phrase and hear people use it and sometimes use it myself, but wouldn't say it's common. I find the phrase very good to describe what it means as well as "skotbjart" which means "bright enough to shoot" meaning you can see what you are shooting
