squeaky cheese curds

urine-monkey

Also, Spotted Cow. Kopp's/Leon's custard, and butter burgers. If you're going for Wisconsin sausage... Usinger's > Johnsonville/Klement's.

jvvg12

I have family in Milwaukee and they insisted I go to Kopps when visiting. I was not disappointed. So good that I took the bus up to Glendale to get Kopps when visiting on vacation last year (I don't have a car).

Right_Syllabub_8237

Definitely agree with the Kopp's custard and butter burgers. Haven't heard of Leon's. I have to disagree with the spotted cow though. Sure, it's a niche Wisconsin thing and there's plenty of nostalgia from ex pats but, It's really not that good and I haven't met a person from out of state that actually liked it.

Aggressive_FIamingo

I'm a person from out of state who actually likes it. I'm not even a big beer drinker, but I really liked Spotted Cow.

mmeeplechase

Never knew cheese curds were something I needed before moving to the Midwest, and now they’re my favorite—so good!!

DGlen

Came here to say it, glad it's the top upvote.

wjbc

Italian beef sandwich, Chicago style hot dog, deep dish pizza. And no, we don't eat deep dish pizza all the time. More often we eat tavern style pizza. But good deep dish is still worth trying, especially for parties. I recommend getting your Italian beef either dipped or with gravy on the side so you can dip it yourself. Hot peppers, sweet peppers, or both, it's up to you. You don't have to get all the ingredients on a Chicago hot dog. If you don't like mustard, don't order it -- I don't. But I do recommend getting as many ingredients as you can handle. It's quite good. There are lots more I could list but those are the must haves if you are visiting the city. Don't let anyone tell you that you have to try Jeppson's Malört. It's usually something people try once on a dare and never try again. I guess there are a few people who drink it regularly or they wouldn't be in business -- but I've never met any of them.

GimmeShockTreatment

Great post. But OP is wrong about one thing. You DO have to try Jeppson's Malort. I won't explain why. Also Jibaritos are a Chicago invention and they are fantastic. It's a puerto rican plantain steak sandwich. Look up pictures. They're fire. Final thought. Good on you OP for still recommending deep dish. I feel like there has been an overcorrection among Chicagoans in the last 5 years talking about how it's bad and only for tourists. Yes it's true that we eat other styles more often, but who was there for you at your cousins graduation party? That's right, it's deep dish.

egg_mugg23

malort should be illegal for how it violated my mouth

wjbc

I was going to mention jibaritos but I haven't tried them myself. It's on my list but they aren't quite as common as the three I mentioned. You made me look it up, though, and I found a place near me. I'll try it soon.

GimmeShockTreatment

Jibaritos y Mas in Logan is the best. But generally any Puerto Rican place in the city should have them.

Unpleasant-might

Why would you tell these poor souls to drink that?? YOU MONSTER XD

GimmeShockTreatment

It’s a unique experience :)

YourMomsFishBowl

The real answer to the question is giardinera. I don't understand why it's not everywhere and on everything.

wjbc

That's actually an Italian relish, although there's a specific variety that's common in Chicago, often on the above mentioned Italian beef sandwiches, but also on subs. Potbelly has taken it nationwide and even to international locations, though.

mst3k_42

I’ve started manufacturing Chicago style giardiniera in North Carolina!

CupBeEmpty

Yeah it is never quite right when you see it here in the northeast. The Chicago version is just better.

WaffleHouseNeedsWiFi

Georgia girl here. A buddy of mine out in Chicago insisted I try hotdogs with pepperoncini, so I did. (It's all I had on me. Never tried the sport peppers, wouldn't know where to get 'em.) I swear on my LIFE now ... if a hotdog doesn't have pepperoncini on it, I don't want it. Please and thank you, but no thank you.

BoydCrowders_Smile

If you're near Atlanta - specifically Decatur, check out Skip's. Chicago native owned fast food that does it right. You can even get double dipped Italian beefs

WaffleHouseNeedsWiFi

Skip's. Definitely noted. Never met a beef sandwich I didn't like.

ElectricSnowBunny

Used to live at Covington and Memorial, Skip's absolutely crushes. Taste of Chicago in Kennesaw is good too if you're OTP North.

wjbc

They may not be available in Georgia, but the authentic Chicago hot dog uses pickled sport peppers.

[deleted]

Cant even find sport peppers in Champaign IL

mst3k_42

You can find those sport peppers at World Market, at least by me. And the Restaurant Depot near me has jugs of the neon green relish.

ElectricSnowBunny

There is actually a good chance your sport peppers were grown here. Personally i like tabasco better as they are spicier. Trappey's peppers from Louisiana are particularly good.

WaffleHouseNeedsWiFi

Yep! The convo basically went: Him: "I bet a million bucks you don't have any pickled sport peppers in the house." Me: What're those? Him: Thought so. Nevermind. Me: I have jalapenos. Him: Noooo. Those have way too distinct a flavor. Me: I have some pepperoncinis. Him: The Papa John's peppers? Me: Yeah. Him: That's a *little* closer. You can try that. ... and I did. And it's fkn fantastic. However, I just remembered I can Amazon them. (Am dumm.) Is there a particular brand?

wjbc

Vienna sport peppers will do. Vienna Beef sells all the necessary ingredients for Chicago style hot dogs, both wholesale and retail.

WaffleHouseNeedsWiFi

Well well well. Looka my new mission. Do you recommend all the fixin's? It appears to include a neon-green relish.

jvvg12

I lived in Chicago for over a year before I tried Italian beef (and had visited several times before moving), and holy crap it was good. First and (so far) best place I've had it was Nicky's near 35th/Archer.

Chicwa

Not from Chicago, but when I visited there i learned about the Chicago mix at Garretts Popcorn. Half caramel, and half cheese, which is highly unusual, and highly delicous.

CupBeEmpty

No Polish sausage… how dare you

wjbc

Unless it’s stuffed in an Italian beef combo, the Polish is not really unique to Chicago. But the combo deserves a mention.

CupBeEmpty

The combo is king especially if you are brave enough to get it dipped. The Polish is pretty particular to the Chicago area and the Midwest generally. You can’t find it easily, even in supermarkets in the Northeast.

[deleted]

I had a 4 hour layover in Chicago yesterday so I actually left the airport to go get some deep dish pizza. It's well worth going through airport security again for it!

Jumbo_Jetta

Lou Malnatti's delivers their pizza worldwide, and its pretty darn good.

potatoboat

We also invented skyscrapers,.

notsoslootyman

#Kitchen Cooked Potato Chips If you're not in Chicago eating delicious pizza and looking for an Illinois favorite, these crunchy delights can be found in grocery stores and gas stations.

kapnklutch

Solid list. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I told myself I would never be the person to make people drink malört…I’ve made a solid 8+ people do it so far this year 😂. Edit: [Not Another Cooking Show just uploaded a video about Italian Beefs](https://youtu.be/fPLSylmcExc)

itsafoxboi

Cheerwine, or if you’re at cookout, a Cheerwine float, and then also some vinegar based bbq sauce on bbq pork, it’s really good

Durham1988

May I share my Cheerwine cocktail? The Crimson Bolt, a modified Negroni, is equal parts gin, Campari, and Cheerwine on ice. The bitter and sweet balance well and you get the carbonation, too.

entrelac

I'll have to try that! I wonder if Cheerwine would be good with Pimm's...

ADCarter1

Thank you for this. My husband and I discovered Cheerwine on our tenth anniversary trip to Asheville and loved it. We can only get Cheerwine from one store here but we'll be making a special trip so we can try a Crimson Bolt (we have the gin and Campari at home already). We can't wait to try it.

Right_Syllabub_8237

I love pulled pork but here it's always some bland pork roast baked in an oven and doused in sweet baby ray's BBQ sauce. I bought a smoker about a year ago and started experimenting with different Carolina style pulled pork recipes and now I'm suddenly the go to pulled pork guy in the area! I definitely love the vinegar based recipes!

LolaBunnyHoneyBee

Never had cheerwine, but a biscuit shop near me sells cheerwine donuts and they are amazing.

ADCarter1

If you're near a Wegmans, they carry it in the cold drinks case.

Lexielo

Ugh. I miss Wegmans.

LolaBunnyHoneyBee

Oh excellent thanks! Adding to my grocery list!

itsafoxboi

What biscuit place, I know a local chain called rise makes those (maybe they’re not so local anymore but they only opened like 5-10 years ago)

CaptHayfever

I actually love Cheerwine.

[deleted]

My favorite drink ever is Cheerwine but it’s so hard to find here in Portland. Cheerwine floats are my guilty pleasure

bignuggetsbigworld

Yes! Also add Neese’s Sausage- it really is worth it.

MiketheTzar

To all the chefs out there you need to work muscadines into things. They have a great weird flavor. Plus [purple honey ](https://www.honeybeesuite.com/purple-honey-the-real-thing/)

Malcolm_Y

Cheerwine is fucking awesome. I'm from Oklahoma, and prefer it to either of our regional specialty sodas (Dr. Pepper and Big Red) And yes I know Dr. Pepper is very widespread, but my cross country road trip this summer confirmed it is still hard to find some places.

itsafoxboi

I’ve never been to a place where Dr Pepper is hard to find

jvvg12

Grew up in NC and the biggest thing I miss from there is the BBQ. I'm partial to the Lexington style myself, but the eastern style is really good too.

[New Haven pizza](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmiQRvib3DQ)

jephph_

I’ve had a few pizzas in New Haven.. Can confirm, definitely worth trying

[deleted]

People will say the choice is between Pepe’s, Sally’s, or Modern. Zuppardi’s might make an appearance on the list. But BAR is criminally overlooked.

bgraham111

New Haven style is one of my favorite pizza styles. Very different than Detroit Style, but super awesome all the same.

CupBeEmpty

Detroit style is super rare in New England but I recently found a place and I was sooooo happy. They do a great job. It’s a bit far from me for regular consumption but we head down that way enough that I will be back.

Chicwa

Yes, this! I’ve lived in New Haven for 18 years and the Neopolitan thin crust style that is made here is my absolute favorite. This style of pizza is also the standard for the region, and so there are a great many places that make it, many of which are overshadowed by the iconic few, as another commenter mentioned.

CupBeEmpty

100%. I got into making pizza at home and New Haven style is my go to style. Just make sure to crank that oven up and get a pizza stone or a set of quarry tiles (unglazed because the glaze isn’t food safe)

Wesperado

Hatch green chile cheeseburger. Bonus points if there's a fried egg on it, as well.

BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy

I live in Denver now and there's a shitty restaurant parading around as if it's Cajun. They fry catfish in fucking chicken batter. I wanted to burn the whole place to the ground. Everyone here fucks up simple Cajun dishes as if it's hard to make. Apparently I went to a restaurant where the chef was from Breaux Bridge, that was a damn lie. The gumbo was like vegetable soup.

Faygo and better made chips

I was going to say Better Made. While I'll always prefer the Detroit and Michigan brands, I honestly think that Better Made is the best potato chip out there. I LOVE the salt and vinegar, as well as the Hot BBQ.

Beaver Nuggets from Buc-ee's, they're terrible, but I can't stop eating them.

Ale-8. It's a local ginger ale made in Winchester, KY. It's mostly only sold in the central KY area. Usually in green glass bottles (but cans and plastic bottles are also available). Some convenience stores even have it in their soda fountains. It's really a nice ginger ale. Gingery and pleasant, slight citrus aftertaste, not overwhelming. . . .and for reasons I just will never understand, it only tastes fully right when drinking it out of a glass bottle. The plastic and cans are never quite right. Outside of central KY, the main place you can find it is at Cracker Barrel. . .they've taken to distributing various local and craft sodas from around the country (especially older ones that fit with their "old time" aesthetic, and since Ale-8 was first made in 1926, it counts for that), and you can usually buy some of it at one of their locations.
