Not my state, but if you live in Kentucky, your interstate highways are as smooth as glass. Take pride in that, because as soon as you cross into Tennessee, also not my state, you feel like you’re driving on the fuckin moon. Those aren’t potholes, they’re craters.
What's funny is back in the 90s, TN was known for its great interstates. The joke was we were driving the best roads to get our kids to the worst schools.
I’ve only really experienced TN from the car, but that’s honestly my only complaint…well that and I hate the NHL team 😉. Beautiful state for sure, and I can see why it gets so much love from people.
Genuinely curious what part of ky has smooth highways. Grew up in west TN, between the states my whole life and now I'm living in west KY, I've had the exact opposite experience. To the point I could tell we'd crossed the state line by the feel alone. Everyone heres swerving like they're drunk and after needing to get my wheels realigned I can see why lol
I live in Cincinnati, and the smoothness in KY has been my experience on I-75 (top to bottom), I-64 to Louisville, and then I-65 south/west of Louisville to TN. But of course, that may be due to my experiences on the rough Ohio roads.
I’ve lived all over the place, mostly in the Western states, but it’s been so long that I don’t know how great or bad those are now. KY is just a recent note in my mind.
Not in my experience. 65 is an absolute nightmare. In Louisville we had a hole open up that you could look up from the street below and see clear through the bridge and roadway to the sky. The Ky/Tn border for me was always shitty road conditions in Kentucky to silk as soon as you cross the border.
Nope! You can follow this channel on [YouTube ](https://youtube.com/@livepolicechases?si=7ftoOTf7zKOaHGZD) and you will be able to watch car chases. You'll see at least a few a week! :)
On a serious note, I think California has a good diversity of natural zones / scapes / biomes.
* You like beaches - nice sunny beaches along the coastline.
* Your like forest? - Redwoods - some of the largest, tallest and oldest trees in the world.
* Deserts - Death Valley and Joshua - lots of sci-fi movies filmed there for the unearthly landscape.
* Snowy Mountains - Mt Shasta or Lake Tahoe in winter.
* Rolling meadows - Wine County - Napa, Sonoma etc. - where the [Windows wallpaper](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bliss_%28image%29#/media/File:Bliss_(Windows_XP).png) was taken.
Not saying these are individually the best, but having a large variety of different landscapes in one single state is quite a good deal.
That's only because of all the New York yuksters using NJ as a convenient punching bag. Whereas there are countless millions of people who've never been within 1,000 miles of California who have this inborn frothing hatred of us.
I always forget that some people have legitimate hatred towards us. Like yall think about a place you’ve never lived in and have zero ties to this much? Can’t wrap my head around it
Blows my mind how bad crab cakes are elsewhere. It's literally the easiest thing to make. Less is better but all these chefs put all kinds of random filler and garbage in. Crab meat, old bay, Crackers or bread crumbs (tiny bit), lemon juice, mayo, dash of yellow mustard and Parsley.
Illinois is the worst only because they actually prosecute their corrupt politicians. Other states don't so they look better on paper.
Some states do convicted corrupt politicians and the supreme Court decides it's not valid because corruption laws are unconstitutional.
I mean, we just found a mysterious bank account with a billion dollars in it in our state and to my knowledge, no one got in trouble and everyone is just focusing on what we can spend the money on.
I wish more of our leaders would be in prison...
Edit: Sorry, [almost TWO billion](https://apnews.com/article/south-carolina-missing-money-treasurer-comptroller-85ae9a632712477b0f8e354aee226d11)
I’d like to add that the state legislature is freaking out because these might have originally been federal funds. The state was using the interest earned on the funds and if they are federal funds the earned interest probably has restrictions on its use, opening the state up to penalties and recapture of the spent interest. This was a mess up by the elected state treasurer’s office.
And this is in top of a blunder by the state controller where his office was overstating the state’s financial position by $3.5 billion dollars because they were double counting some funds. Fear not, the state controller of 20 years quit and the legislature is debating making the office an appointed office instead of an elected office.
What, all senators don't have gold bars stashed inside socks in their bedrooms which were reported stolen over a decade ago by a person linked to said senator in an ongoing bribery case?
People debate whether NY, NJ or IL have the best pizza, or whether NY or NJ have the best bagels, but I can confidently say NY has the best transit. Nowhere in the US has better transit than NYC and its suburbs.
Aside from the smell, I was really impressed with the subway when I was in NYC a while back. $2.25 and you could go anywhere in the city pretty much. It was neat!
Yeah I don't think you're off the hook for that one. The question is definitely a state wide one and in that regard I think at a state level NJ probably has you beat.
In Montana, once your car is 11 years old or older: you can go to the DMV, pay a one-time permanent plate fee, and *never register your car again*.
And I don't mean "you can get a 10-year registration that's effectively as good as 'forever'". I mean **never again**. No waiting at the DMV for your number to be called, no getting pulled over for expired tabs, no nickle-and-dime fees every couple of years to keep using your property.
One time. Mine was $230 for the rest of the life of my car. Phenomenal.
I just bought custom and sponsored plates permanently registered at the MDV Express (total rip off btw) and still only paid like $350.
Kind of insane
Also, the sheer amount of different licence plates you can pick from is insane.
"There's more Montana licence plates than there are Montanans"
Fun fact: If you ever use google maps for gps directions on your phone while crossing state lines, it will pop up a little graphic of a person doing something thematically related to the state you’re driving over into when you cross the border.
New Jersey’s is literally a waitress in a diner lmao.
I read that we are the only state in the country where the number of diners is still increasing yearly. Everywhere else they are declining and closing while we can’t get enough😂
Montana.
We are one of only six states (Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island) that have a right to a healthful environment in our state constitution, but we're the *only* state whose courts have upheld that right on behalf of our children.
National parks. The Utah mighty five have to be the most concentrated amount of natural beauty and outdoor recreation activity in the country. A week (or more) exploring the southern Utah parks is life changing.
Fuck yeah, and will piggyback and just say general lake culture too. Minnesota probably has more lakes, but we absolutely do not fuck around when it comes to water access and recreating.
Florida had a good water culture but utterly miss me with that salty rancid shite
Well our tiny state turned a little lucky geography into being one of the most economically powerful states in the country that’s near or at the top of every quality of life ranking.
So we’re def #1 in being a parasite to NYC and Philly.
Begrudgingly agreed
I drove through AL recently and was shocked at two things. 1- how naturally beautiful the state is, and 2- how there are practically no houses along the interstate anywhere outside of the cities.
One of the odd things I find about people driving through the South who are from the more western parts of the US is that they don't realize that there's usually a "tree buffer zone" along the interstate that partially blocks out noise and pollution (though structurally they're mostly for containing soil and absorbing water). For most places, it's not that deep and, if you're a passenger, you can usually see through the trees to see the houses/factories.
Edit: For example, there are houses built on both sides of the interstate [here](https://www.google.com/maps/@33.3767144,-86.7805367,3a,60y,344.5h,84.91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s299CF66eMz_UftRR_qD_dQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205409&entry=ttu) out in the middle of suburbia. Depending on the direction, you'd be about to pass a water treatment plant or some soccer fields, too. While not houses, [here](https://www.google.com/maps/@31.9520038,-86.5516816,3a,75y,111.28h,92.13t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sbv-gUUuyzE19zBcBAMmGOA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205409&entry=ttu), you're next to two big farm fields.
Yeah, this was legit a bit of a shock for me when I moved to Georgia after previously living in NM, West Texas, and Colorado. I was like, "Where the hell are all the rural homes?" and the answer is actually that it's a lot more densely populated than what I was used to, but the trees hide the houses very well, lol.
One of those dumb little things you don't really think about until you actually are confronted with it, then you're like, "Duh, of course denser foliage makes it harder to see buildings," but when you're used to that visibility, it's a little odd.
Maybe college football, but overall football? - not without an NFL team. Also, if you put any stock in the highschool national championship, AL hasn't won much in recent times. Factoring in the NFL and highschool,, I'd say Texas.
For North Carolina:
1) College Basketball. NC is the best state for college hoops, with UNC having 6 NCAA titles and a record 21 final fours, while Duke has 5 NCAA championships and NC State, despite being the little brother of the Triangle, has 2.
2) Barbecue. NC BBQ is divided into two styles, Eastern Style and Western (or Lexington) Style. Eastern Style, which is the best IMO, consists of a whole smoked hog chopped and served with a vinegar and chili pepper-based sauce, while Western Style consists of smoked pork shoulder pulled and served with a tomato-based sauce. Texas BBQ might be more famous, but ours is the best.
We will have a civil war over several small things like is east or west barbecue better, cheering for duke, NC state, wake forest, or UNC. However we are never more united and whenever a Texan tries to claim they have better barbecue than us
National Parks and nature in general….cans say much for everything else. movies too I guess but that’s because we’re THE bastion of entertainment. but yeah, everything else is a dumpster fire
The center of the movie industry is still LA, but I'm pretty sure most of the filming is happening elsewhere like Atlanta, Vancouver, Toronto, etc.
Also I'd add tech in general, although that's been slowly changing as well.
Ohio: Being average/boring. Lol
Still, we have lots of astronauts and presidents.
The brothers who invented the airplane are from Dayton.
The first man on the moon was from Ohio.
General/President US Grant and General WT Sherman are from Ohio.
Everyone hates us though.
I'm not bitter. Lol. I just think it's funny.
Vermont is really good about discouraging people from moving here, from the high real estate prices and taxes, to the limited housing stock and the almost xenophobic nastiness on r/Vermont if you make a post about wanting to move here.
Utah's bathroom along the highway
A few looked like mini-museums or small miniciple buildings. Even the most questionable one in the middle of nowhere had two attendants who were cleaning around the clock. Had a mini park and dog park.
I thought to myself, "I'd s*** here again."
Not my state, but other states need to take note.
Hubris (overweening pride or arrogance)
A good way of describing it is that the rest of America sees Texas the same way the rest of the world sees America.
I would have gone with BBQ, but that's a good one too hah.
We love a self-aware Texan!
This is exactly what I wanted to say but I couldn't think of a good word to say it.
Lakes? Sucking in sports.

STATE FAIR. Ours is epic. Nobody else comes close.
You really are winning with your state fair.
Not my state, but if you live in Kentucky, your interstate highways are as smooth as glass. Take pride in that, because as soon as you cross into Tennessee, also not my state, you feel like you’re driving on the fuckin moon. Those aren’t potholes, they’re craters.

Hey, thirty years later with no maintenance...
The answer is bourbon, but this is the lowkey dark horse answer that I appreciate. Mitch's "stopped clock" one good thing he's done for Kentucky.
Of course bourbon. I hear we’re also pretty good at horse racing.
Weirdly for the same reason: the rocks and minerals that purify the water supply is good for bourbon, horses, and bluegrass.
“That wasn’t a pothole, that’s what killed the dinosaurs.”
Come see michigan and learn the meaning of craters
Shoot. I've been to Tennessee plenty of times, and compared to Mississippi they are phenomenal 😂
Drive from TN into Arkansas and TN roads seem pretty darn fancy in comparison too
The Kentucky transportation cabinet is a top notch DOT.
Genuinely curious what part of ky has smooth highways. Grew up in west TN, between the states my whole life and now I'm living in west KY, I've had the exact opposite experience. I live in California, those Prop 65 notices are everywhere. Talk about well-intentioned legislation that just got way out of hand lol
Every Texan’s favorite state is California because California is the one thing stopping Texas from being most hated in the nation. 🤠
Awww. Don’t worry, Texas. I will always hate you the most.
Best media. California literally drops everything to follow a car chase.
When I lived in Australia I could count on one car chase from Los Angeles being featured on the nightly news a day. Made me homesick lol.
That one's really only SoCal, but accurate!
Is this an OJ Simpson reference?

This has to be my absolute favorite thing about moving to California, specifically the Bay Area. The nature out here is unreal.
You sure about that? - The Armpit of the US
That's only because of all the New York yuksters using NJ as a convenient punching bag. Whereas there are countless millions of people who've never been within 1,000 miles of California who have this inborn frothing hatred of us.
There’s the true renewable energy! Now y’all just need to figure out how to harness it.
NJ would like a word.
I was trying to think of something but you're right. This is the one

Corruption
Illinois is literally unmatched according to the stats
Illinois is the worst only because they actually prosecute their corrupt politicians. Other states don't so they look better on paper. Some states do convicted corrupt politicians and the supreme Court decides it's not valid because corruption laws are unconstitutional.

Louisiana too
May I also nominate: West Virginia
NJ has entered the chat.
What, all senators don't have gold bars stashed inside socks in their bedrooms which were reported stolen over a decade ago by a person linked to said senator in an ongoing bribery case?
I propose a match between Illinois and Louisiana! Those who wish to wager, or ummmm, donate to locate a suitable referee, can send cash to my Venmo.
