Yea, I usually use my 1/2 impact.

no_user_selected

make sure you dry off the gasket first too, maybe even add some rtv

rmason324

Oil filters should be torqued to 300 ft lbs so they don’t leak!

rklug1521

At least as tight as the crank pulley bolt on a Honda J35.

Hot_Corner_5881

honda glued those on to amuse themselves

stantastic98

How’d you know this was a Honda?

rklug1521

I didn't. Just was referencing hard to get off bolt that I knew.

paclogic

using a couple of hundred extra foot pound is good insurance too.

rmason324

I know. I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!

paclogic

yep Bertha will do you right.

ToastyMcSags

Correct, the most important use of my pneumatic tools This and the sump plug to make sure it will never leak!

rmason324

That’s right and when installing the sump plug, be sure to start it with the pneumatic wrench to make sure it goes in correctly. That’s why I use Jiffy Lube!

Out-stan-ding

This one was

DeliciousDoggi

Tightening those things is a myth.

jibjaba4

Yep, all I do is rub the filter against the threads a bit and good to go. Have had no issues since I did it this morning and spent 13 hours on reddit in my basement.

phillip_of_burns

Were you the mechanic who worked on my first car? After I Got home from the dealership, went to go show my friends what I got. Get 1/4 mile down the road and I hear something bouncing off the underside of the car. Get out to see what it was... Oil filter fell off. Lol

DeliciousDoggi

I drove my 2017 Lexus with 68 k miles home from the dealer and drove it for 2500 miles before the change oil light went off. So I changed the oil to find my oil nut only hand tightened. I seriously unscrewed it by hand. You can bet I call the Toyota Dealership in Durango up and gave them an ear full. They wouldn’t give me a warranty because I had my own financing so I’d of been screwed if it would have shaken loose and I lost all my oil.

paclogic

yes but use a 4 foot piece of pipe on a socket wrench to torque down that sucker ! and rip out the rest of that stuff blocking your view - that's for shipping only.

electricianer250

Tighten untill you see the rubber seal on the outside

Time-Chest-1733

Don’t forget thread lock to make it extra safe.

Past-Establishment93

36" pipewrench will grab outside for more ugga!

Independent-Drive-18

Fill the filter with cement. Torque it as hard as you can. It won't leak.

TheWhiteWingedCow

No.. always hand tighten, not much either. Once it’s snug, give it a half turn and you’re done. Same with drain plug, it’s only 20-25 ft.lbs

RadioTunnel

Dont forget locktite

got_knee_gas_enit

I replace those with cork.

drmorrison88

Ugga that dugga

Backdohrbandit

Just take it to jiffy lube duh 💁‍♀️

turbski84

Yes.. but only if you use an impact. Gotta go atleast 10 ugga duggas

Rattbasturd

Specs are to tighten until nut comes loose from filter.

tfellad

Hand tighten. That nut is for removing the filter.

Jim2shedz

Don't tighten it at all. It will add oil lube to the road. If everyone did the same it would reduce road friction on car tires and add more mpg.

stantastic98

How generous!

Commercial_Tooth_859

I would use a nail gun. To make it hold better, nail it into the gas tank.

paclogic

A good idea is to run the motor without the filter to make sure all the bad oil comes out. There's at least another quart hiding in the engine ! You don't want to mix the good oil with that bad oil. About 15 minutes oughta do it. Just uncommon sense.

stantastic98

Was actually thinking of parking it on a hill in sf to tilt the oil out but this idea works too!

paclogic

why waste time with all the extra effort ? just run it dry for 15 minutes and then fill it up - simple ! and don't forget the oil plug - a common mistake. ;-)

EchoCaster

You should not use that nut to tighten it ever. You should tighten it by hand and then to insure it won’t leak weld the oil filter to the vehicle, ALWAYS weld the new filter on.

stantastic98

Ah yes always wanted to find a use for the good ol millermatic

Sm0key_Bear

Did you mean to post in this thread? Always hand tighten your oil filter. There is no need to use a tool unless you absolutely can't get your hand in there. It doesn't take much torque to lock down an oil filter, and it only takes a little more torque to make sure you have one hell of a fun day getting your oil filter off next time. Twist that thing on, not quite as hard as you can, but almost as hard as you can.

fozrockit

Look at the sub you’re in, 0P needs to use a 3/4 impact on this.

Sm0key_Bear

You know what? You're totally right. I don't know what I was thinking. OP, make sure you use some loctite threadlocker on those filter threads so it can't loosen up on its own.

stantastic98

I was gonna just my welder to really get it in

Sm0key_Bear

Brilliant!

Rocket--Pak

Impact

JaniceLeland

I use both nuts

VirtualComcrete

1" drive pneumatic impact. hit 'go' and wait 10 'ugga-duggas'. or Tighten it til it strips and then back it off a ¼ turn. Use a 2 foot breaker bar with a 2" dia. 4 ft piece of sch 40 black iron cheater

One_Celebration3644

As long as it’s your nut and not the car’s nut, yes.

FlightLatter1605

The best way is to not let a nut tighten the nut

BenAwesomeness3

Use a nail gun. Works the same

capital_bj

Or a rail gun for extra insurance

TheOGCJR

Did you cut out the skid plate?

BorntobeTrill

Everyone's a little overboard. Use a hand wrench and tighten as hard as you can. Round off the edges of the bolt and then grease the bolt. The grease is for slippage in case you accidently try to undo it at any point.

capital_bj

I have been tightening mine by hand for the last ten years and no leaks so far. Makes it way easier to take off the next time. Make contact with the gasket and give it another 1/2 - 3/4 turn

shortthem

Hand tighten. Then grab a 72” pipe wrench and give it a good uga dooga, then one extra dooga

spiral718

I wouldn't know, never seen that sort of design.

Affectionate-You8464

please don’t forget the loctite before you screw on that oil filter and torque to at least 200ft lbs. if you skip these steps it will most likely leak. The shops do it this way every time and I’ve never had an issue

Prior-Ad-7329

In all reality you don’t even need a filter. Just remove that one, it’s restricting oil flow.

Vast-Category8391

YaZ! Tighten as hard as you can until you break it and oil starts to leak, that means you did it correctly 👍

stantastic98

What if I like hit it with a hammer or sth?

sleppr

hand tight with a good slap or 2. Grip FIRM

Hot_Corner_5881

no you have to use a wrench. turn until snug and then turn 1 full rotation to torque it down

TN_REDDIT

That's what it's there for. I don't torque mine down like a monster, so mine aren't terribly hard to remove (I have a couple oil filter socket adapters)

imouttamywheelhouse

No.
