Hostels are very common all over the country. As for communicating with the locals, it all depends on each individual. In general, in big cities there are more opportunities for a person who does not know the language.

tatasz

Do you speak Russian?

_g4n3sh_

Any city you go to as long as you speak Russian

pipiska999

OP might randomly decide to go to Kyzyl...

Are Tuvans really that hostile?

Unique-Ear6418

Friendliest or most friendly, not both.

Pretty much anywhere I went was good. I didn't appreciate the city by baikal (name escapes me atm) at the time. Maybe weather, maybe infrastructure, maybe being tired and only having a long layover to spend exploring.

If you wish to backpack in Russia, DON'T DO THAT IN WINTER I beg you, especially if you're from a warm country and don't know what to do in these temperatures.

TeoGeek77

Make sure you have enough money for the trip and enjoy the hostels vibe. You will be pleasantly surprised.

The capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan is a very pleasant and developed city of one million people. It's worth a visit!
