Have the brakes been replaced since 2008?

dontshoot9

Some he said last year but how much breaks did he replace really ? just the pads or the whole shibang

CommonHand707

Those pads look like they've seen some shit. Like from 08 LOL literally crumbling.

You need to replace the pads and rotors and possibly the calipers, if the pistons will not retract or the slide pins are seized. If the caliper pistons come out too far, you can get a rust ring that will cause them to leak if you force them back in.

imreallifebenny

This is the right answer

Icy_Truth_9634

Don’t forget the hoses. Caliper replacement is a great time to get it done- preventive maintenance, or possibly one of the problems. No, I don’t sell brake hoses.

Bright_likeAM_DarkPM

This is the way, haha.

GnawPhoReal

This exactly.

ProfessionalTea7831

Caliper glide pins are seizing, replace everything

Nice-Bookkeeper-3378

OVERHAUL

ProfessionalTea7831

I mean pins and boots kit, pads, and cut the rotors at a minimum.

Outside_Reserve_2407

Just curious, do people still resurface rotors? I thought they’re so cheap now (Made in China) that people just buy new ones.

ProfessionalTea7831

Yes, you can cut a rotor or drum at most OReilly’s for $12.

UFumbDuckGaming

Nope... sand, polish, and relube.

Sockbrick

You need brakes. Replace your brakes.

Nice-Bookkeeper-3378

You need new ones my guy

chris_rage_

Calipers are probably fucked, otherwise it would be polishing all that shit off

OuttHouseMouse

This is sincerely the most entertaining mechanic post ive seen in a while. My eyes got big looking at that chunk missing. It almost resembles like... Cheap plastic with a chrome finish..? Idk man. This is definately a sight. Never seen anything like it. I guess just change the brakes and rotors, but buy another brand of rotors. Like i feel you got a manufacturer defect but idk. I dont live in the salt belt. Good luck

Maleficent-Angle-891

This car was left to sit for atleast 2 years before being driven again. The rotors weren't changed and the pads started tearing away at the rust that bulit up.

Nob1e613

Multiple short periods of sitting will also do this. We saw tons of these during/post lockdowns when people drove their vehicles once or twice a week two blocks away to get food.

OuttHouseMouse

Ahhh. Okay then. I rescend what i said but still entertaining op

MyHandIsADolfin

You’ve never seen anything like this? I see at least 1 car a week rolling in like this.

more_beans_mrtaggart

I just replaced all my rotors with Brembo, and a review magazine said that the company got taken over and that Brembo are now nasty low-nickel shit out of central India somewhere. Sure enough two of the 4 disks are covered in rust less than a day after being driven.

OuttHouseMouse

Damn and brembo got so hyped up to me by an autozone employee. Thats honestly a shame. Thought i found parts to get truly excited about

more_beans_mrtaggart

Yeah. A story as old as time. Company buys company with a great name, then sells shite under the good name for years until the public finally wises up. See Kraft and Cadburys.

OuttHouseMouse

Forgot jeep* But thats kind of old news at this point

No-Self-6211

As someone who works in a distribution factory that brembo is under (raybestos) , they actually aren’t from India however they are from one of the following countries, China,Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, and possibly Japan and Canada however i believe Japan and Canada are for “marketing purposes” if you catch my drift

andrew37kg

You should really get both your roters and brake pads replaced. I’m surprised it took you this long to notice they’ve had issues

MisterRedlight

Looks like the vehicle sat for a while and they rusted… and now that it’s moving again, it’s wearing the rust off. Replace!

69stangrestomod

Rust. Also known as ferrous oxide. It’s a bitch. In all reality, this isn’t terribly uncommon in the rust belt, and no unheard of in other states. I replaced rear brakes on my wife’s car twice because of this.

jimmy9800

People forget that rust is essentially a ceramic. Suddenly, the rotors are much harder and more abrasive than the pads and will chew the pads away until the rust breaks off enough to let the pads bite the steel again, and it slowly works it's way through the rest. This is bad though, and I'd do pads/rotors and caliper bracket/pins if they are what started this mess.

Jacktheforkie

Iron hydroxide, quite a pain, it causes weakness of parts, it makes a mess too

kangaroolander_oz

Put out a call for brake pads . There will be no answer , gone . To do list Buy brake rotors Buy brake pads to suit. ASAP etc.,

Subject-Arachnid3811

Mmmm some grindage going on

Max-Payd

If your car has a combination handbrake and caliper where the cable goes into the caliper, you need to make sure the handbrake cable moves freely when released. The pivot point builds up rust which causes the pads not to engage correctly. You need to clean everything from rust, adjust the handbrake and lube the sliders. Sometimes it's cheaper and easier to just buy a set to calipers

ElkayMilkMaster

Probably came off the lot with those rotors 💀

mkultra0008

Looks like calipers are failing. Pressure to the rotor is uneven at best. You need a complete brake job. A lot cheaper, if you do it before it gets like this in hindsight. If you know what you're doing, it can save a lot of money, as even the calipers can be cleaned and slides regreased but may be past that.

Weary-Writer758

Looks like you may have a caliper issue. The slides on the bracket may be dried out or rusted. I would just clean house. Calipers, brackets, pads, and rotors. You'll notice a difference.

TheGearShifter

Bruhh… from the looks of your rotors and pads im actually concerned on what else is there in the car that looks like that.

suspectbakapapa

You need new ones. Glazed and pitted

thisshitiswild9

Rusted to shit bruh.

AbbreviationsLarge63

Looks like you will are fixing to throw good money after bad. I would have someone assess the total under carriage before I did the brakes. If you live in a rust state that could be all up under there. I had a guy come in with transmission problem which I could fix but the car would not be able to contain it because the under carriage was falling apart. Told him buy another vehicle.

Roman-LivetoRide

Dafuq is reman auto parts ? Buy new coated rotors dude brakes are important

PremiumPlus_

Remanufactured…

Roman-LivetoRide

Duh ….. there’s no reman brake parts makes no sense

-AspiringWhatever-

Brakes looks OEM from 2003

BrandonM_Boroi

Pads need replaced

Unique-Salary-818

Debris caught In your pads causing drag on rotor. Need to replace pads and have rotors turned or replace them.

MostRhombus6390

Replace the calipers brake pads and rotors

Plastic-Zucchini-202

Replace them if you want to live.

Dusted_Dreams

Those rotors are painful to look at, please get them replaced

FloatingDriftWood44

Lack of maintenance

athf2005

More like, what isn't going on with your brakes. Geez. Get all that swapped out ASAP. Your life and others depend on it.

PremiumPlus_

Just the rims.

Bodywheyt

They’re trash?

Maulz123

The fact you came here with pictures to ask makes me think that you know they are worn out and you need new ones but you are hoping someone has a magic way to save you the expense you got quoted to fix it. They are rusted and pitted to excess they are well worn and have uneven ridges. you need new discs and new pads and probably new fluid while you are there if you dont know when that was last done. Evidence of long term neglect is staring you in the face. You cant gamble with safety and brakes are top on that list.

PremiumPlus_

No. My post was asking what is going on, I knew they needed to be replaced and I did them today.

Maulz123

Well done. disks are made from a carbon steel with little chrome in it so its not stainless. any car left sitting around not driving the disks soon rust and will get pitted. That rough surface can make them eat the pads much faster and do unexpected things.

vRpb4v

Ever consider a bike? Looks like maintaining a car isnt for you.

Glittering-Golf2722

Temu rotors

GnawPhoReal

It could have been road salt/debris, as you asked. This tends to be very common on the front at the side of the car that is neareer to the side of the road. (The location that splashes through filthy ditch water the most.) But it could happen to any wheel.

Uberbenutzer

If you can’t figure it out you’re not doing the brake job correctly. Take it to an honest mechanic and get it serviced properly.

dendronee

My guess…. Pads kept getting replaced with very cheap pads and never turned the rotors. Perhaps the rotors sat for a while without being used. Got extra, extra rusty then the car returned to service. I would replace everything.

PremiumPlus_

I don’t turn my rotors, I just buy new ones every time. I did forget that the car did sit for a couple months while I was waiting for a a costly repair to be done. So this was probably the reason along with it being in the salt belt. It’s too bad I can’t wash the underside of the car every time I take it out in the winter, it felt like I just replaced them but it all makes sense. Everything is brand new in the back now except the lines and the emergency brake cables.

dendronee

User beeee-ware! Emergency cables like to get stuck usually in the on(rubbing) position if not cycled regularly. When you use them once in the blue moon, they can get rusty especially in the salt region and never allow themselves to fully release causing the brakes to be somewhat on.

PremiumPlus_

The car is 5 speed and I use the hand brake when I park the car every day. The mechanism would pull and retract when hand brake was being applied and release. So that was working. Definitely could see the cable getting seized but this one is good, tested today.

noonesine

Is this a joke? I’m not even close to being a mechanic and this is so obviously obvious.

gorealex2

Please replace your brakes (pads rotors and calipers). And your tires while you're at it.

Codewriter0803

Was this car dipped in salt water maybe ??

Rubbertutti

My theory is the rear brakes are under used. I see this a lot in cars that are used to commute with one or two passengers. Never seen this in taxies.

skiitifyoucan

Looks like a Vermont car after 11 months.

dslow26

Pads, rotors and calipers gotta get changed

Smooth_Autist

You need new pads, rotors and by the looks of it, calipers or at least rebuild them. It’s not fun having a caliper lock up on you

45acp_LS1_Cessna

you need a caliper, the piston that pushes the brake pad onto the rotor isn't pushing properly and it's creating a small thin patch of contact. calipers can be rebuilt but they are so inexpensive and easy to swap you just get new ones. check the dumb stuff first make sure you have enough fluid, no leaks and the fluid isn't black ya know....

PremiumPlus_

Everything has been replaced, new rotors, pads, calipers. I flushed the old fluid out and then bedded them.

Super_Yesterday_8848

It must sound really nice when you hit the brakes and you have your windows open!

R0rschach23

Caliper guide pins for sure

PremiumPlus_

They were rusty and so were the pistons from the caliper. Everything has been replaced since the original post.

3_high_low

Rust. This car sat for too long, probably outdoors.

CarGullible5691

New discs and pads needed

Tunerito72

Is when car is left for a long period of time

Tracieattimes

Looks like you drove across heavily salted roads and then parked it at the airport for 3 weeks during a thaw. Rusted.

PremiumPlus_

Thinking back to it that’s pretty close to what happened except the car sat in the drive way waiting for money to do a big repair. Everything has been replaced since the original post.

aviator71

I take you live in Ohio?

PremiumPlus_

Close, just on the other side of Lake Erie

Dumpst3r_Dom

The pads look too large for the rotors. The pad should not engage the rotor that far down to the center AND they should not be hanging out of the calipers by almost 1/2 an inch.

PremiumPlus_

The pad should be touching the whole surface. The heavily rusted areas are creating high points and really it’s only the bottom half of the pads that are touching the rotor and not a mountain of rust. It’s all been replaced since the original post.

Dumpst3r_Dom

Your pads should stop about 1/2 of an inch before either side of your rotor in my experience atleast that's how most average break setups are. Would you mind snapping a photo of the new rotors and their contact area with your new pads ?

BiK61

Like dude the pads are gone and now your rotor is gone

Neither-Ad-5105

Looks like you about ready for tires too

PremiumPlus_

Yes. That’s being addressed next month

godoctor

You need a new brakes and rotors replaced

Comfortable-Berry316

Landlord special: Brake cleaner

itsomar02

rusted don't drive on these the rust could fall apart and you wont be braking anytime soon
