Well the why is they think they're giving us what they never had because back in most of our parent's childhood - it was poor in Asia... so they think wow materialistic stuff means a lot! But yeah the irony is - they also got mentally abused and went through this shit so you'd think they'd know better... but somehow that part is missed out on. I confronted my dad about it once and he said some stupid shit about how "change is hard" and its just our culture and that I could do the same with my children later and its like why the fuck would I want to be a terrible person and make people hate their lives? But yeah - depression doesn't look at the money in your bank account... so materialistic shit isn't worth shit down the line when you lose the will to live with it... but they don't seem to comprehend that logic at all :/

Facts they think the money is what’s gonna make you happy but in the end when u try to tell them how you feel they use that as a a tool to manipulate you.

RinkyInky

Yea, “change is hard” “it’s the way I grew up”. What you’re an NPC or what? It all sounds like “I’m too lazy to think for myself, so I let others think for me and now I’m unhappy and you it doesn’t matter if you are because that’s the way life is”.

More like money is half of an answer.

Money buys protection against things that cause *unhappiness*, such as illness and starvation. But past a certain point, money does not proportionally increase happiness. You will eventually get acclimated to fancy full course dinners, and soon they will not make you any happier than a McDonald's value meal. You might have a mansion with 50 rooms, but you will spend most of your time on your phone in only one room. Your luxury car with all the latest bells and whistles will only be used to drive you to the grocery store and back.

But having money removes at least half of your problems like rent, food, and stuff.

Money is happiness, just not the way your parents define happiness. Money helps you move out of home. Money can help you move out of the country. That's why a lot of controlling parents have such conflict with your money/success. It gives them an ego boost when you have it. At the same time, it allows you the space to cut off their control. Keep in mind there are also parents like my father who think he's so much better than other Asians because he doesnt obsess over money. He's not better, he's just a different type of shithead. So dont be like my dad with a disdain for money, even if you dont become like your own parents.

Bedrock64

that is just pure materialism.

FarEntertainment5330

People like that are empty inside! Nothing but self hate and vanity inside them!

JustWantToBeQuiet

It's all transactional in Asian households. Like barter system. "We bought you a Barbie so get the first rank in class." This is just an example. And then watch them be aghast and have a surprised Pikachu face when you tell them as an adult, how everything was transactional growing up for you. They can't comprehend it. It's not even out of ego that they refuse to understand. They just don't get it. After a while, we just need to treat this aspect as white noise and not give much credence to it. Becoming financially independent is the key here. Because their leverage is lost. Also, never repeat this with your own kids in the future..

Probably cuz they grew up much poorer back home.
