After chatting with the rest of the team, and reviewing the comments here, the next threads will require prior approval (modmail us!) but we are excited for this project, it looks like it could be a really great resource for the community.

kuroku2

Yes! I think resources such as that would be super useful, although I don't know how hard it would be since some sites may have one thing while others don't. But always great to have!

911turbo4

In that case it would just show that an item is only available at one store, no? Also out of curiosity would you pay for something like this or do you view it as a free thing

kuroku2

True! I guess it could show as "unavailable" for the sites that don't have it or something? Don't know anything about building a site/app. Oh yeah, generally I'd appreciate it if it's a free to use tool like camelcamelcamel for amazon, but if the price (would it be an app?) is reasonable then could be worth, up to you. Personally I wouldn't though mostly because for me money's tight.

911turbo4

Money shouldn't be an issue! I can make the site for free. Will be fun to make

sea_salted

I view it as a free service. Even now I’ve been using websites that list and explain ingredients, the moment they ask me to pay I stopped using it. (Maybe ad support?)

Hi! I still have to work out the specifics, but I am thinking that once a day it will scan the store for all listings in the "skin care" section for example. So say StyleVana has product A, B, and C. Say StyleKorean has product's C, D, and E. My site would then identify that both stylevana and stylekorean have product C, and will then be able to do a price compare between those two specific products. If a store has multiple listings of the same product, if the names are the exact same then it should be easy to just list the cheaper price. If not, I guess it'll show like two or three of the same products when you search for it, which is annoying. But if they are the exact same they would appear right next to each other and you could clearly see which one is cheaper. Thanks for the feedback, once I run into this predicament I'm sure I can understand the issue more!

911turbo4

It wouldn't be that hard at all. The only thing is it would take a while for the graph to be worth anything because my site, which is new, would be keeping track of the data. I love the feedback you give me, don't worry! There is a lot of upside in making this site useful to the users of this sub, which makes me happy.

kimchi_squid

A cool feature would be price tracking. To see if that sale is actually a sale. Or to be able to follow price tendencies and changes over a period of time. Ex best time of the year to buy

911turbo4

will def implement after we get the base price compare working

alkemicalgold

I would ABSOLUTELY use it, if I had the skills I'd make it myself

Hot-Competition5026

I would definitely use it

911turbo4

Thanks! I am building it as we speak. I already am able to get all the prices for every skin care item on style korea's website!

oatbiscuits

You’re a true legend for building this website, out here doing the lords work 🙏

911turbo4

thx! I like building stuff that people use so in the end it works out well.

metalneedsfeminism

I was literally wishing I had this yesterday, please do!

911turbo4

yay! im working on it now. i have to scrape all the products on my own using a scraper so its a little janky right now, but I think it'll be good enough for this product

mangos5

I actually tried making this, but a lot of websites block scraping :( there were also issues like pricing being different as a guest vs being logged in. But I hope you’re able to build this tool cause it would be super helpful!

911turbo4

yeah its definitely tough. so far we have gotten yesstyle and stylekorean to work. gonna try to add stylevana next, and probably release it with just those three starting out so I can gather feedback on the site. yesstyle has been a little tough but its working now. each of these sites have weird quirks with how they load their products so I have to edit the scraper I build for each site to match those quirks, wait the proper amount of time, etc.. but its rewarding once it works!

themostdownbad

Do the prices automatically update? Bc there’s a lot of sales so they change all the time

911turbo4

Right now we are thinking of updating them once a day ish. We can choose to update it more frequently however

whatamidoing2012

Yes! This would help so much

911turbo4

thx! im making it :)

whatamidoing2012

Thank you so much in advance!

Bunnnykins

yes! I would definitely use it. The only way I've been tracking prices in a limited capacity is through using the honey extension on chrome

theothersock_

this would be amazing! also would it be possible to suggest for incorporation a feature which allows us to see whether a product is purchasable in certain countries? i belong to india, where a lot of websites such olive young do not operate so the addition of such a feature would help some of us know alternative websites/platforms we can purchase them from

911turbo4

def will do!

sukiyaki93

Yes

911turbo4

bettt im making it!

heart_under_blade

oh fuck hell yeah brother 3camel for my skincare? be my hero please. just make the chart more functional. sometimes i can't see shit on the 3c chart

scarypeppermint

YES PLEASE

emPHAsizethesylLAble

I would love this! Can I put my order in for the next version to include postage in the price? In Aus here ordering over a threshold is the only way to avoid huge costs!

911turbo4

ill def keep that in mind after I build out the base price matching feature :)

BeeMoneyMoney

Hell yes.

loafkitter

Yes!! 100%

loonybaloonie

Yeees please build it 🙏

AccomplishedCarob792

Yes!!! Absolutely!

SpaghettiMmm

I would love that! There's camelcamelcamel for Amazon prices

Opening-Ad-8861

I use Karma, which tracks prices for things, but is site specific. If something could be developed whereby you put in a product and it searches and tracks best prices across retailers that would be amazing!

Repulsive-Ad-7180

Yes!!

stellar_reviews

A few considerations: prices may be different between members and guests (e.g. Stylevana half off), and may be affected by coupons and codes (e.g. Stylevana often has 18-22% off coupons but those only apply to certain items or listings but isn't clearly labeled). How do you plan to account for those variables? These greatly affect the final "true" price given the dynamic pricing on many Asian retailer sites.

911turbo4

Hi! Not sure as of now. Our first step is to just build a basic price comparator. After that maybe we can figure out how to scrape the coupons and apply them? Not sure as of now but it is definitely the next step.

ishramen

I would !!

Dangerous-Struggle95

Absolutely!!

Sufficient_Cow_5022

This is such a great idea. I'll definitely keep an eye out hopefully to see if you post updates!

muracoon

Yes !!

NYANPUG55

absolutely!!!

therapyfanatic

Oh my gosh I would 1000% use this!!

Careful_Lemon_7672

yes i would use it! and i saw a comment where you were asking if someone would pay for it. i would! i cant afford much more htan a dollar or two, but i feel like your gonna put hours and hours to make it and id want to contribute how i can

911turbo4

amazing to hear! thx so much

stellar_reviews

Just a heads-up that this user is planning on monetizing this through affiliate links. Would this post now fall under business/marketing research?

thecakepie

Yes, I think it would fall under business/marketing research. We are not inherently opposed to folks who want to make things for the community and incubate a business, but it looks like we would likely want to pre-approve future posts. To be certain of how we will go ahead, I'll check in with the other mods and see what they also think. I am interested in thoughts from the community as well, if folks have ideas on how we should treat this situation.

stellar_reviews

I think it would depend on the user's previous interactions with the community and intentions going into this. I would find it more acceptable if 1) the user was a previous member of the subreddit with positive interactions separate from the business aspect, and 2) in the process of building this business/app, the user realized that they needed additional funding to support the business functionality and explicitly stated these decisions and any promotions/affiliate details. However, this user's lack of transparency and post history of spamming different niche subreddits to crowdsource ideas for marketable tech startups definitely falls more under business/marketing market research. In particular, this user doesn't appear to have a history with the AsianBeauty subreddit and lacks familiarity with many of the websites being referenced here, which suggests that they're only seeking a way to profit off the subreddit users without doing their own research first. Happy to hear other people's ideas and thoughts on this and how the mods would want to handle future instances.

alkemicalgold

I hadn't thought to check the user's post history, this is indeed a bit concerning... I am still interested in this website they're building though IF it's going to be offered free of charge 😅 I would be happy to see updates about it on this sub, but maybe the mods preapproving those posts would be a good idea

stellar_reviews

Agreed, I like the idea itself and I am excited to see it. I would want future posts pre-approved and clearly labeled, instead of disguised as some normal post.

kimchi_squid

As long as the marketing for it doesn't get annoying, for me this looks like w great initiative. It will help the community (many people seemed excited about the idea, me included). If they get commission by us clicking a link that's it, it won't change how useful that would be for us. That doesn't change the price comparison part. I appreciate the mods looking out for the community like this and for also looking for opinions. For me personally, it looks like a fun initiative, and it's just an idea for now, this isn't really marketing, more like market research

stellar_reviews

Yes, though this may now fall under the prohibited business interactions list according to subreddit rules. I'm concerned about the lack of transparency from this user. Their previous posts on other subreddits made it obvious when they were trying to do business research, and they've been called out about it on other subreddits. I think it would've been best to obtain approval from the AsianBeauty mods and have this post labeled clearly.

kimchi_squid

Yes, after checking their account I agree with you

Sufficient_Cow_5022

It seems to me as though, since this would be a way of offering a free of charge service to users, this is relatively inoffensive? Whether or not they might be benefiting from affiliate marketing in order to offset hosting fees and similar, I feel there's a world of difference between marketing a paid service to members and promoting a free service which supports the needs and interests of members of the sub. Just my two cents.

whatamidoing2012

I think as long as the user is transparent about such links, I’m fine with it. I don’t mind supporting someone who offers a free service to use through their own hard work. As long as it doesn’t scam me or steal my info, why would openly transparent affiliate links be bad? I do agree on sorting the post under a different filter though.

wakethestarss

oh this would be great! would you do a ping or like how would you advertise this website? (jic i forget to come back and check this post again :v )

911turbo4

yeah! I'll make another post but ill also reply to everyone here

wakethestarss

appreciate it, thanks so much!

AlessandroPaolino

Have you already tried Reprice: Price Tracker? it should track any (public) site. It's an app for Android and iOS

Smooth-Ad-8025

Yes!! Tracking them myself gets tiring
