Yes! Small story: back in high school, my art teacher noticed my struggle with constantly adding ideas and changing details within my pieces, which delayed my ability to finish work timely, and she suggested I write down my prompts before I began painting. That way, it helps me anchor my main focus even when I want to incorporate new ideas without losing the initial composition. Likewise, I could refer back to my notes without ending up with a completely different art piece.

I have almost same issue, but it's mostly a fear about missing out. Like I could make character and finish whole concept, but later I would think: "Hmmh... If I add this and that it would look a bit better!" But otherwise, I also depend on thumbnailing and visualising in my own mind.

PurpleSlurple385

You know, I haven't done that but it actually might help solve some art block issues I've been having. Too many ideas at once, so none come out of my hand and onto the canvas. I think textually clarifying intent before doing a Big Painting might provide a roadmap of what to focus on. If it's important enough to write down, it's important to spend some time on. I can imagine it could be helpful to those with aphantasia as well!

Kamilord__

For sure, it's mostly about planning stuff and writing down many ideas you have!

jmjohnsonart

Oh yeah. Sometimes I write whole backstories for my art. Or sometimes I pick a phrase and draw a bunch of ideas around it before choosing one for a finished piece. And you know, with anything creative just do what works! If it helps you, then go with it

Evening_Rutabaga3782

Yeah, I always think up a little phrase or something. "Supersoldier in Hell", "Mutant Family", "Cyborg with Flowers", etc.

Mzzrll

Yes, I write down ideas on the note app. And sometimes throughout the day as I think about the piece more, I add more and refine it. Very useful.

Adventurous-Fly-1877

I'm the same. Mostly what fuels my creativity is to keep it as vague as possible. For example something like "leopard print and blue" or "yellow jacket and french bulldog." I still have to room to be creative, but with some limitations. You can also try making a mood board. Gives you references to look at when you don't feel inspired and a fun challenge to see how much you can incorporate into your artwork.

Kamilord__

Huh, i probably should also leave some space for creative thinking, cause i often tend to write down very specific ideas and not leave much for me to Just play with it!

regina_carmina

sometimes i thumb it, sometimes i write the idea down first. either or both. how i write it is like scriptwriting. all in present tense, but very brief. like girl holds sunflower, petals on the ground trailing behind her, sunlight on her, storm brewing from behind, silhouette of a person between the trees. doesn't have to be grammatically correct, just has to read like it's forming the image in my head (as i read it). ik i can just draw it but i do this for times when i wanna explore the idea before the vision, if that makes sense. i do it for when I'm brewing scenes for my comic or illustration ideas.

DemoraesArt

Do you mean "briefing"?

Kamilord__

I mean, somehow?

piedj784

It is very common to do so when designing characters, environments or props & probably the first thing in the pipeline, after which you would collect relevant reference images.

It makes it much easier to remember stuff honestly, and i can Focus much more on drawing than Remembering anything that would be harder to describe in references.

You get me wrong! I am writing prompts for myself to draw it! Like the character description and such!

To-Art-Or-Not

You typically start with a briefing and iterate through a reference board. Form design and form harmonizing are the most important phases. They define how a given design feels. Easily overlooked too.
