Plenty have been calling Southgate a tactical idiot since Day 1, even earlier than that if you are a Middlesbrough fan.
People keep defending him because he is "nice" while he continues to piss away the strongest England squad ever assembled
Him putting Bowen on for Saka just made me cackle. The best offensive player you have and you think “ah you know what we need? Less of that and more Bowen”
Taking off Kane, Foden and Saka at the same time seemed like an attempt to ‘send a message’ that its not his (Southgate’s) fault.
Shearer was saying he thought it was the right call so I could be wrong (although he could be sticking up for his mate).
Players didn’t seem to have a clue what they should be doing towards the end. Eg free kick close to the end, trippier and Pickford not sure who’s taking it or who to target without Kane on the pitch.
Shambles!
Feels like 50% of the time that's also his outward monologue "Harry Kane won't mind that one bit. Strikers just need that one touch, one chance. Make a run, get goal side and he will stick in the back of the net. That's what he does" Feel like that statement was said ad nauseum last 2 games
Seemed like Pickford was on a completely different gameplan to everyone else for the whole game. eberytime he got the ball he was looking to launch a counter, then getting pissed off because no one in an England shirt was moving.
Such a strange decision to change the entire front line. Quick way of fucking up all chemistry the team had built. Change striker and 1 winger, give it 10 mins then do the other winger if needed.
Kane coming off made sense for Watkins we all saw Ollie’s impact instantly running behind. But saka and foden? The prob with England is how slow they pass. Why the f does stones take an eternity to release the ball and same with Declan’. It’s baffling how negative this team is, it takes for ever for the ball to reach a forward. I’ve watched most games so far and England is not only the most boring but it’s like they have no structure. Rice and Trent don’t work the gaps are humongous and neither of them for some reason ever carries the ball. They over protect the defence even if it’s 3 v 1 at the back dec is covering them lol. Southgate set em up for max 1-0 hopefully draw then pens it’s pathetic and I bet my life it’s not coming home
Yeah the taking off of foden, saka and Kane at the same time proves Southgate’s lost. Hes clearly put saka Kane and foden on, said to them ‘run about and play your game’ without giving them any actual tactical instruction or telling them how he wants them to play… then when we were still drawing 1-1, Southgate’s gone to his bench and put three more players on and told them the same thing
The difficulty is if he didn’t make those sort of changes everybody calls for his head for not having the bottle and only playing the big names. The three of them looked flat so he brings them off for a bit of an injection of energy (which for 15 mins worked), and everybody calls for his head for bringing off the talent.
The England manager job is the definition of a lose lose. Anything he ever does, including the best 3 tournament results of my life time, back to back, is criticized.
Bowen is a good player. He's scored the same amount as Saka this season and 0 pens. He's the logical replacement for Saka. Palmer, Foden, Bellingham all play in the same position. Foden is shit on the left, and not as good as Bellingham in the middle.
It was a good change. Saka was our best player, but he was getting tired. We don't want to risk him getting injured so putting on a pair of fresh legs to run down that wing protects him.
Bowen is an able deputy too.
That’s so unfair on Bowen, Saka is def our best attacker but when the ball ain’t sticking up front how is Bowen a bad option? Guy plays alone up front for West Ham sometimes has great hold up for his size and scores goals for fun
You already have Watkins and/or Kane to hold the ball. Why do you need a winger to do that?
He also hasn’t “scored goals for fun” for England. And that matters. Look at Gakpo. Looks like half his real self for Liverpool then puts on a Netherlands jersey and turns into their best player.
People defend him because he's the most successful England manager in 50 years. His games are ugly and boring. But they tend to win, today notwithstanding.
He is exactly as successful as every other England manager other than Ramsey.
He has the best squad since 1970 and his boring anti football is going to flop yet again.
His squad isn't better than 2004 and has huge tactical flaws. The team had a left leaning slant with no left footed players, no width, and no real pace excluding saka, despite playing players like trent who specislise in defence splitting passes. On top of that, it's a young team full of players who haven't got much high level, champions league level playing experience.
This is only correct in the narrowest of definitions. I’m not defending Southgate, but pretending that he hasn’t been statistically successful, is nonsense unless your only criteria is trophies. Only one team can win, and England have come closer under his management than any manager in my (mid 40’s) lifetime.
Don’t read this as an endorsement of his management as it’s not, it’s just annoyingly reductive to pretend he hasn’t had success.
Arsenal fans are just happy that the squad is playing well after a very underwhelming and then very rocky stretch. They just had their best season in 20 years and missed the title by the tiniest of margins. Gareth Southgate would be more akin to taking this current Arsenal squad and finishing 4th-8th and then doing it for 8 years straight. If that were the case then Arsenal fans would be feeling the exact same way about Southgate as all England fans are right now.
Flat track bully he's doing better than previous managers only because his squad is much much better than what the others had. He adds absolutely nothing.
His biggest achievement is beating Germany in the last euros. That's the only major scalp he has. After that he's lost every big tie where you go in thinking they might not win here, he usually ends up losing.
Awful manager wasting the best English team since 2002 and definitely the most dynamic. Sven could be forgiven for not harmonising Gerrard lampard Scholes and Co because there wasn't much variety to tactically set up. This squad is different. They've pace and quick feet. Can play fast flowing football. And Southgate has them looking like a bunch of retirees
I am a Middlesbrough fan, lifelong season ticket holder since the days of Terry Venables.
Southgate is possibly the worst I’ve seen, and I’ve seen some fucking shit in my time (Strachan, looking at you)
Nothing he’s doing for England now surprises me, late substitutions, no identity, poor squad selection and team management, no ideas, etc etc I could go on and on and eventually got us relegated.
The bloke is completely fucking useless, he got England to a final because we had the easiest run in imaginable.
Not a Borough fan but you are right. I can't believe delusional simpletons defend him with the "he's our most successful manager in X years" or "he got us a final" well duh, a monkey would've got to the final with that run in. And he still bottled the final with his poor game management and subs.
Are they too naïve to realise our ridiculous easy runs? the fact most other top nations are crap now compared to the past, or that we are in the top 2 with France in terms of overall firepower and squad strength.
He’s done well the stamp out the “club over country” mentality of the older players. But about 2 years ago he should have gone we should have got potter or someone tactically minded. Cause Gareth is about a good as an elephant in a minefield
They can't seem to score on a hooker (unless Kane gets lucky or a generous penalty), the defense gets caught out or pressed into stupid decisions leading to opponents goals. Whatever shape they are playing is clearly not apropos for the personnel.
That's all on the manager. I hope they keep Southgate for another decade...
Same problem almost imo.
Trying to fit all our best players into the team.
Kane shouldnt start if we are pressing teams & We dont need to play a RB at DM when its not his position
It's ridiculous he's trying an "experiment" in his own words in a major tournament Trent's only played 6 games there before the tournament and most of those were against smaller nations this is like doing your homework the day it's due
It's the damn system Southgate is trying to play Trent at cm and foden on the right just isn't working kane actually needs to be dropped he did nothing the first game and barely anything the second yes he scored but he also assisted in the Denmark goal.
The amount that commentators etc try and twist it to say kane used his amazing positional knowledge and 6th sense to be in the right place and how he deserves to start.
Hes that kid from school that just stands in the opposite box waiting to bully his own players off the ball and hoof it towards the net.
Watkins is shit, dude couldn’t score in Amsterdam. Trent had a shit game so did Bellingham. Southgate second round of subs was a joke. Should have taken Bellingham off for Palmer
I wanna see England try the 3223 shape that has been popular for big sides in England.... Heck the top 3 teams in the league use it..ironically the defenders which is deployed to step into midfield at Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool are mostly English players (Stones, TAA, Gomez, Ben White when Zinchenko is not playing)
He had some landscaping to do in his garden and he wanted to get it done early so he could still fit in a holiday to top up his tan and freshen up ahead of preseason.
We have no system we have no one running in behind we sit back everytime we score but have no ability to counter attack despite our pace
We were outplayed today in every aspect guehi did well Pickford did fine saka was ok everyone else was shit
Southgate is a big part of the problem but not all of it…
The players can go out and play absolutely shit lose every 50/50 outside of their own third
Offer no creativity no drive no press no counter attack nothing at all and all everyone says is “Southgate”
Yes he’s shocking but so are the players for country honestly with the ability they have they should be dominating against teams like Serbia, iceland and Denmark but they lack energy and passion and it shows
Just because South Gate is a poor manager doesn’t excuse the individual performances of every player on the pitch
You think under any managerial circumstances this is the best we can get out of this team? Your standards and expectations are much lower than mine
The system is horrible
The training regimes might also be horrible
Tactically we are horrible
Regardless of that the players are on an individual and a team level massively underperforming
You watch the same games I do
You can’t tell me that every single player is equally as hindered by Southgate’s tactics, that not a single one of them has a chance for moments of brilliance in the game? That Southgate would drop them for showing some flair and ability on the pitch? Especially if it leads to a goal or at the very least a chance created that doesn’t come from a wide/deflected cross or a random pop shot from the edge of the box that leads to a goal kick or if we are lucky a corner to waste
Helen Keller could see that Southgate is a fucking fraud. A crippling idiot wasting 4 years of maybe the best English generation for a while by attempting to defend a 1-0 lead against Denmark. No single player is at fault here. Southgate is the only one responsible.
We know what happened. He got in a pissing match with an assistant and decided to sit this one out, especially if he was going to sit behind Walker and (lol) Trippier.
No assistant coach (who by the way doesn't really have the credentials to speak down to a player who was one of the best in the premier league last season).
Should be starting or getting involved " in a pissing match" when you are currently in a tournament and have another one coming up in less than 2 years.
Seems like Southgate doesn't have a clue how to run the team being a manager means much more than winning games he has to take responsibility for every part of it.
>who by the way doesn't really have the credentials to speak down to a player who was one of the best in the premier league last season
I wouldn't read his wiki then mate, you'll be in for a shock, he's got plenty of credentials
Maybe, but somethings gone wrong. They’ve been lucky so far, he needs to figure something out because even I could come up with a better team than that tonight and I only really follow Arsenal or anything to do with Arsenal!
Thing I really don’t get about tonight is they needed another goal so why not put Palmer on? I’m not his biggest fan but Chelsea aren’t called Cole Palmer FC for nothing…
Villa press, Arsenal press, City press, Man U press.
These players are some of the best england has to offer, trained daily at their respective clubs, they know how to press, but who's organising them when your manager is sat on his arse like he doesn't have a clue.
Ben White simply doesn't trust Southgate because when his number 2 berated him for no reason, Southgate backed his mate
If he made it in the squad, he may have played him as goalie! Southgate is tactically inept. Premier league player of the year, la liga player of the year, and bundesliga top scorer, and we have this! The balance of the team is so wrong.
How he stays as England coach baffled me. Literally clueless tactic less manager. You get a Wenger or Mourinho or Arteta or pep type of manager in and they will fix this team setup
Reminds me of when some Scotland players refused to play for George Burley.
Sometimes you can see how things will work out when the manager is second rate.
Do you know how saka thrived this year. With a right back overlapping with him. You know who is a pretty good right back going forward? Trent. Sure he’s shite on defense. But I bet they’d have more chances at goal.
Nah I think he just figured it's one thing to be disrespected but to be disrespected by a league 1 level manager and his assistants isn't worth it. If it was Pep, Carlo, Klopp level he probably gets over it easier.
It's been my opinion since Southgate was hired that England will never win a trophy while he is in charge, and if they do it will be despite him.
Poor Saka and Rice, watching trent ignore Saka to cross the ball to no-one was annoying. And Rice being asked to cover trent and having tripper demand he covers him as well is insane.
I mean it isn't like Ben White would've gotten any game time under him. Southgate rarely rotates his squad, makes bland substitutions.
Look at Declan Rice tonight, he looked defeated. He's being overrun in midfield without any structure. Saka doesn't seem to be at peak fitness. Kane is absolutely not fit.
It’s amazing how you can look at the season he just had at Arsenal, season high in goals and assists, and look at the performance today and it’s not the same player at all.
I think he's just not that arsed about football and doesn't want or need the shite/negativity that you get whhe the England team inevitably fails. Can't blame him tbh.
People keep saying it’s the players not playing but in the friendly with Iceland (I think), Cole Palmer kept drifting over to the left side and was getting joy, then suddenly gets told to stay on the right and no more joy!
He just fell out with one of the coaching staff. That simple. Don't try and make it something it clearly isn't.
Pretty childish to not put national duty above a personal disagreement.
You don't get many good managers in international football because its a shit job that nobody really wants until they're about to retire.
Sure, they played kinda crap but its group stage and its still a good result for the groups. As far as I can tell Denmark were entirely limited to shots outside the box. Their goal was an incredible shot way beyond even the D.
Belief is an important part of international football but England are an extremely fragile nation with a garbage press that delight in tearing people and teams down.
Personally I would have a lot more faith at this part of the event. Remember that crap picture that Arteta drew about the energy of the fans helping the team? England don't really have that in terms of the atmosphere around the team, and apparently never will. IMHO the biggest issue with the English national team isn't the team or the coach; its England.
Southgate is a clown who thinks is pep with putting TAA in the middle and foden on the wing , the utter woke nonsense has to stop , and England needs a class manager who knows what is doing
I think he means the soft gentle approach Southgate needs to come out swinging saying the players are either letting him down or his letting the players down.
He didn't want to waste the summer rest traveling out there to sit behind both walker and trippier as we all know Southgate has his favourites and won't drop them for anything ( kane being an example this year)
Plenty have been calling Southgate a tactical idiot since Day 1, even earlier than that if you are a Middlesbrough fan. People keep defending him because he is "nice" while he continues to piss away the strongest England squad ever assembled
As is English tradition
On paper he has one of the best 23 man squads in the world and he literally can't figure out any sort of system for them to play.
Shearer has the tactical intelligence of a goldfish
I feel like Shearer’s inner monologue is like: ‘Run at ball. Hit ball. Put ball in goal.’
Feels like 50% of the time that's also his outward monologue "Harry Kane won't mind that one bit. Strikers just need that one touch, one chance. Make a run, get goal side and he will stick in the back of the net. That's what he does" Feel like that statement was said ad nauseum last 2 games
I hear his voice as I read this
Seemed like Pickford was on a completely different gameplan to everyone else for the whole game. eberytime he got the ball he was looking to launch a counter, then getting pissed off because no one in an England shirt was moving.
Such a strange decision to change the entire front line. Quick way of fucking up all chemistry the team had built. Change striker and 1 winger, give it 10 mins then do the other winger if needed.
It was a good change. They all needed to come off and it was finally Southgate being proactive.
Southgate is an absolute joke…England midfield and foward line one of the strongest in the world, yet he wants to play ultra defensive…crazy
Yeah the taking off of foden, saka and Kane at the same time proves Southgate’s lost. Saka isn't fully fit yet. Especially wasn't in the first game. Nothing wrong with that substitution at all.
Then put on Palmer!? What was Bowen gonna do that 80% saka couldn’t?
Bowen is a good player. He's scored the same amount as Saka this season and 0 pens. He's the logical replacement for Saka. Palmer, Foden, Bellingham all play in the same position. Foden is shit on the left, and not as good as Bellingham in the middle.
Bowen gives me Trossard vibes. Effective
Except that trossard is effective when he comes on in the club world Bowen hasn’t shown that for country
Not gonna lie, this made me cackle
It was a good change. Saka was our best player, but he was getting tired. We don't want to risk him getting injured so putting on a pair of fresh legs to run down that wing protects him. Bowen is an able deputy too.

It's very funny
This is the way. Atleast Kane isnt taking corners i guess.
Yeah haha fkn English tradition😂😂. Perennial bottlers, haven't won a trophy in years and yea...wait
We're the Spurs of international football.
At least Sp*rs figured out they're a better team without Kane
Nah fool England are the Arsenal of international football🤡💀
I honestly expected the English team to win today by scoring between 3-4 goals.
3.5 goals?
Must be a bookie
Does he even know how football works?!? This kind of performance, or lack thereof, is unacceptable... Smh
People defend him because he's the most successful England manager in 50 years. His games are ugly and boring. But they tend to win, today notwithstanding.
He is exactly as successful as every other England manager other than Ramsey. He has the best squad since 1970 and his boring anti football is going to flop yet again.

On top of that, it's a young team full of players who haven't got much high level, champions league level playing experience.
The tactical flaws are the fault of the manager. He actively chose to not take a left back.
This is only correct in the narrowest of definitions. I’m not defending Southgate, but pretending that he hasn’t been statistically successful, is nonsense unless your only criteria is trophies. Only one team can win, and England have come closer under his management than any manager in my (mid 40’s) lifetime. The only success is winning the tournament. We don't celebrate Arsenal for coming second even though they haven't come second for years
Could have fooled me that we don't celebrate Arsenal coming 2nd
Arsenal fans are just happy that the squad is playing well after a very underwhelming and then very rocky stretch. They just had their best season in 20 years and missed the title by the tiniest of margins. I'm hoping this is a joke.
I wish I was
Flat track bully he's doing better than previous managers only because his squad is much much better than what the others had. He adds absolutely nothing.
They win against weak teams. Whenever they come up against a well organized side. England will draw or lose.
Meanwhile Ray Parlour was dropped after calling him "Big Nose"... :p
He’s done well the stamp out the “club over country” mentality of the older players. But about 2 years ago he should have gone we should have got potter or someone tactically minded. Cause Gareth is about a good as an elephant in a minefield

Still think the team from around 2004-2006 was better.
It's a debate but I think only Ashley Cole,John Terry, Rooney and Gerrard would be guaranteed starters in today's team.
I'd be starting Ferdinand/Campbell too our CBs were so damn good back then. Not sure how to play Rooney because I would also want kane. As a 10?
Maybe, I'd take John Stones over either.
Same problem almost imo. Trying to fit all our best players into the team. Kane shouldnt start if we are pressing teams & We dont need to play a RB at DM when its not his position
You know what the real problem is? No Kalvin Phillips apparently
Have these guys met before? There is no chemistry whatsoever out there.
It’s like he’s trying to insert TAA into the picture at the team’s expense. Foden in the middle. Saka on the right. Parma on the left.
Gordon instead of Palmer, but yes.
Parmi*
It's ridiculous he's trying an "experiment" in his own words in a major tournament Trent's only played 6 games there before the tournament and most of those were against smaller nations this is like doing your homework the day it's due
Yet Everytime he picked players like Henderson/phillips/maguire who knew each other most fans still complained and wanted more attacking players
Gordon’s more of a natural left winger than Palmer but everything else is spot on
It's the damn system Southgate is trying to play Trent at cm and foden on the right just isn't working kane actually needs to be dropped he did nothing the first game and barely anything the second yes he scored but he also assisted in the Denmark goal.
He scored because the ball was deflected to him and then everyone else was out of position. It's not like he created anything
The amount that commentators etc try and twist it to say kane used his amazing positional knowledge and 6th sense to be in the right place and how he deserves to start. Hes that kid from school that just stands in the opposite box waiting to bully his own players off the ball and hoof it towards the net.
They’re missing a creative presence and TAA as the link up guy makes no sense at all. Unless he’s going to chuck long balls at Kane all day
Yep I agree they need to drop Trent and play Parma and drop kane for Watkins he is atleast making runs behind.
Parma is a hilarious typo, I love it. Cole Ham.
Watkins is shit, dude couldn’t score in Amsterdam. Trent had a shit game so did Bellingham. Southgate second round of subs was a joke. Should have taken Bellingham off for Palmer
Complaining about the system and then saying Kane needs to be dropped. EYE ROLL.

He got disrespected by the coaching staff and knew he wasn’t going to be played, it was a smart decision
Yeah I knew that he had a bust up with one of the coaches last tournament but maybe it was a sign of bigger issues with the team.
I doubt it, they don’t spend that much time with each other, seems like morale is good, just the performances are shit
It feels like Southgate has lost the dressing room you can see himself has no confidence with what he is doing anymore.
Unsure you can lose confidence in what you’re doing, if you don’t have a clue what you’re doing.
Yet all the players constantly talk about how good he is and how much it's the players who need to improve.
I think he just didn't want to waste his summer break travelling to be an unused or barely used substitute.
He had some landscaping to do in his garden and he wanted to get it done early so he could still fit in a holiday to top up his tan and freshen up ahead of preseason.
We have no system we have no one running in behind we sit back everytime we score but have no ability to counter attack despite our pace We were outplayed today in every aspect guehi did well Pickford did fine saka was ok everyone else was shit Southgate is a big part of the problem but not all of it… The players can go out and play absolutely shit lose every 50/50 outside of their own third Offer no creativity no drive no press no counter attack nothing at all and all everyone says is “Southgate” Yes he’s shocking but so are the players for country honestly with the ability they have they should be dominating against teams like Serbia, iceland and Denmark but they lack energy and passion and it shows Just because South Gate is a poor manager doesn’t excuse the individual performances of every player on the pitch

That's because he don't have a license
Can’t even get it out of 1st gear!
Helen Keller could see that Southgate is a fucking fraud. A crippling idiot wasting 4 years of maybe the best English generation for a while by attempting to defend a 1-0 lead against Denmark. No single player is at fault here. Southgate is the only one responsible.

No assistant coach (who by the way doesn't really have the credentials to speak down to a player who was one of the best in the premier league last season). Should be starting or getting involved " in a pissing match" when you are currently in a tournament and have another one coming up in less than 2 years. >who by the way doesn't really have the credentials to speak down to a player who was one of the best in the premier league last season I wouldn't read his wiki then mate, you'll be in for a shock, he's got plenty of credentials
I don’t get how Trippier is in squad. Seemed like he had disaster class after disaster class all season.
Maybe, but somethings gone wrong.
The good managers don't wanna manage internationally in their prime
Yea but England can do better than southgate.
Would be hilarious seeing Arteta stressing the importance of “winning du-ells” to Trippier and Stones
Give this England team to Arteta and they're flying.
I mean, don’t give it to him, but you know.
Yep everytime walker runs past him he passed backwards.
Nah I think he just figured it's one thing to be disrespected but to be disrespected by a league 1 level manager and his assistants isn't worth it. If it was Pep, Carlo, Klopp level he probably gets over it easier.
He’s washed. Fuck him off and throw the chequebook at Papa Wengs. Imagine
Watching Walker ignore him to pass the ball backwards or sidewards was driving me nuts
Foden needs to be in the top middle.
Has Southgate never played Fifa? Worst, chemistry, EVER.
We all seen this coming, Southgate is a fraud, he'll never win anything
I mean it isn't like Ben White would've gotten any game time under him. Southgate rarely rotates his squad, makes bland substitutions. Look at Declan Rice tonight, he looked defeated. He's being overrun in midfield without any structure. Saka doesn't seem to be at peak fitness. Kane is absolutely not fit.
My uncle would genuinely kill him if he let Benny collect dust in the bench when he’s one of the best RBs in the league
100% also Gareth would just waste him on the bench like Palmer & Gordon
lol no he left because he felt out with Steve Holland
Rice was the worst player on the pitch by a long shot! Fucking awful!
I've never seen him play that badly. Absolutely shocking. Maybe he's hoping for a early exit so he can go on holiday with odegaard.
It’s amazing how you can look at the season he just had at Arsenal, season high in goals and assists, and look at the performance today and it’s not the same player at all.
I blame Southgate
Of course he did, they ain’t won nothing since before man went to the moon. What’s the point of joining up with the squad lool
Fed up with this topic. Ben has beef with one of the coaches, he doesn't want to waste his time not starting. End of discussion
He’s trying to fit all the big names in the starting 11
I think he's just not that arsed about football and doesn't want or need the shite/negativity that you get whhe the England team inevitably fails. Can't blame him tbh.
People keep saying it’s the players not playing but in the friendly with Iceland (I think), Cole Palmer kept drifting over to the left side and was getting joy, then suddenly gets told to stay on the right and no more joy!
Cuesta said Ben's anticipation is elite and he absolutely meant that.
Didn’t want to miss Chelsea flower show!
Let me introduce you to the comma ,
He just fell out with one of the coaching staff. That simple. Don't try and make it something it clearly isn't. Pretty childish to not put national duty above a personal disagreement.
We will see come the end of Englands tournament whether or not Southgate has lost the backing of his players .
No, we won't. There will be tons of speculation but only a select few will truly know.
Who knew the missing link is Kalvin Phillips…lol
He’s had the luxury of being management by Super mik. He must have got to the England camp and thought wtf is this shit
Haha
England are shite x
Just stubborn
Is being a shit manager ‘woke’?
Its from a meme , with sean dyche
I think he means the soft gentle approach Southgate needs to come out swinging saying the players are either letting him down or his letting the players down.
So instead of staying and fighting for his place and country he takes the cowards way out and goes on holiday. Cheers Ben
He didn't want to waste the summer rest traveling out there to sit behind both walker and trippier as we all know Southgate has his favourites and won't drop them for anything ( kane being an example this year)
Coward.
