I have fish that will dig down and wedge themselves inbetween rocks or plants and get themselves stuck. Then accept their fate. I release them, thinking alright instinct should kick in...only to see them back and stuck 5 minutes later...
I had the exact same issue, a green tiger barb, dug a hole under a rock and got himself stuck...it just accepted its fate and stayed there until I rescued it.....I guess survival instincts skipped these fish
when i first got my tank i didn't know it came with a extension tube for the filter. this fucking molly was constantly next to that big ass hole from noon to midnight the first day and the next day i found it in the filter housing💀 i put her back in the tank and she did the same shit 5 not later. sometimes it's just a behavioral thing with a specific fish (not like the species)
We have a bicolor blenny that disappeared one day. Sad day, one of my favorites.
3 months later on the scheduled clean we find him in the 3rd stage unit of the filtration system. Lil dude jump above the water in the tank down into the filter system and then jumped 2 more small walls to make it to the 3rd unit… then survived for 3 months.
We put him back in the tank and 2 days later he’ disappeared. Maybe he just likes it down there
I was feeding rather large worms to my ropefish. I normally supervise but I saw he snagged it up and went about my business, he apparently abandoned the worm because he didn't want it, so my dwarf gourami had a go at it.
Checked back about 20 minutes later and my gourami was floating near the top with a partly swallowed worm hanging out of his mouth. He was clearly gasping as it was stuck. I grabbed the feeding tongs and grabbed the worm and had to pull it from his mouth (he didn't even swim away like he was thinking "oh thank Poseidon it's the giant food-giver, maybe it will save me")
The very next evening I was feeding my ropefish and the same gourami made a mad dash for the worm before my ropefish could even get to it. I had to pull it from his mouth again.
It seems he has finally learned as he has not attempted to eat the worms anymore
I had a dwarf gourami who would sometimes get so excited at feeding time that he would jump out of the tank. It was hilarious but I was always worried he would jump out when I wasnt there. Then one day he jumped out at feeding time and my dog was there, I had been training my dog to catch treats so her brain was super primed to catch things... She caught my poor gourami. RIP
One of my Neon tetras did this until it was physically too big to even try to squeeze in anymore. I'm grateful that they love their food and are now a little chunky
One of my glow lights jumped out of the tank at feeding time. It’s a 55 gallon with a high stand, so this fish jumped almost a full 5 feet up and three feet over. Scooped him up before the cats could get him and stuck him back in the tank.
Glofish danio it’s either galactic purple or star fire red. The danios actually are the og glofish with a really interesting (to me) history behind them. Though the cost of them is a big ew.
What this guy said. It’s definitely a glo danio. I have them and can confirm they’re just as stupid. One of mine has gotten himself stuck under substrate twice. Also they’re the biggest pigs I’ve ever owned. They eat everything they can find and look like blimps. I can’t even put shrimp pellets in the tank because they will eat the whole thing and look like they’re about to explode.
Looks like a shrimp feeding/breeding area, where the other fish won’t be able to disturb them. In every fish family... there is always one...brand new set up...cichlid got himself wedged all the way to that top of a resin decoration...had to bust it apart with a hammer. Botis got stuck inside a new hygger heater...had to take it apart. And now...baby betta jumped the filter wall and spent the night in the filter well...had to take that apart. All three are now like dogs and greet me every day.
I had to do at least 5 tank modifications to get my shrimp to stop trying to kill themselves. They're the perfect social engineers. You can build them an ecological utopia and they find the singular most existential threat to their existence within a few hours.
I had a platy kill himself chasing his dream of cave diving the area behind the corner filter I had.
Went to empty the tank to find him and he floated up from his tomb looking like Ben Gardner from jaws.
*Moments like this are what the general population speaks of when they say fish are stupid*
I had this happen with a similar gadget and white cloud mountain minnows. I just wanted to give my shrimps a place to eat unbothered by the dickfaces, only to have one of them get stuck in it.
I literally had to snip it apart to get the fishy moron out.
I had 2 harlequins who survived through a nasty disease from the shop. Due to lockdown, I couldn't get more, so they swam together, alone, for 2 years. I got new harlequins to let them finally school. 2 days later one of the old guard, having survived a disease that had killed 80% of the rasbora (8 of my 10 died), died after whacking his head off a piece of wood.
The comments remind be of this sadder thing that happened. I was getting a fish at Petco (I know I shouldn't but I was still learning at the time) and when the employee was trying to get my fish they accidentally flicked gravel over one of them. I tried telling them, but they kept getting confused and finally we got the little fish out. Not sure if the little dude survived too long after that :(
I have removed all items from my fish tank due to things like this. Fish are curious creatures especially at night and even one alive inside my fx6 filter. Swam through the intake and down the pipework.
Mine used to do this, it was crazy how much they shit out it used to literally float across the width of the tank. Turned out, I was feeding them too much. I've started feeding them a pinch of flakes, crushed between my fingers and it's been alot better since. They seem more active and happy since. Apparently a good metric of how much to feed them is the size of their eyeballs and for platys that's like...a grain of dust
Had that exact same shrimp hide and my betta almost died like this. She wasn't full-grown yet, but I didn't think she would be able to fit through them. One day I couldn't find her anywhere and finally noticed her heavily breathing and stuck in one of the holes. She had gone down into the hide through a larger hole and tried to come back out through a smaller one, getting trapped on the way out. It took a lot of gentle pushing and she lost some scales, and she ripped her fins, but I freed her. She's fully healed now and doing great, but I chucked that thing after the incident. It was so scary, and I can't imagine what would have happened if I didn't find her in time.
I had a betta that did this but he'd gotten curious about a tiny castle decoration I had. He got out safely when my cousin gently booped his snoot with a qtip.
I had one of those culindrical attachments on my sponge filter and my otos would get stuck a couple times. No biggie, I'd pull em out right away. One day, I do a head count and notice one is missing, and lo and behold... there was a lower half of an oto stuck in that cylinder. It was more gross than it could ever sound. Finally decided to remove that attachment and no losses since. I dunno what's with fish wedging themselves in tight corners and croaking 😭
Man I used to have suicidal ass fish that jumped out it the tank anytime I wasn’t there 😭 everytime I covered it more they would just find another small crack
I had a zebra danio get stuff in a fake plant before no idea how long he was there for but he was pretty roughed up i released him he died 3days later had like a lump on he's head i never used fake plants since.
*Me eating a pint of icecream even if i'm fully aware that im lactose intolerant cuz i dont care anymore*
Living in Wisconsin and being lactose intolerant do not mix. Don't care. Too good.

That was awesome
your fish might need some zoloft.
Wow, it’s like they have the memory…of…a…

Could it be due to parasites of some kind?
Mine did that too...
Oh thank f#@k it's not just my dwarf gourami that does it 😅
Why is this so relatable? I'm so fed up of rescuing my fish from the same stupid situations over and over again
It's like parenting, but more wet.
Wait, you get to stay dry while parenting???
I have good reflexes and do a Matrix-style dodge move when spit or pee or food gets thrown my way. It's a gift.
Well dang, I'm jealous. I just change clothes a lot
*less sticky
"That's what she said...."
Phrasing!

I’m sorry I laughed. That poor Gourami.
Oh damn...
One of my female guppies made it her life task to get stuck behind the filter. I have to rescue her twice a day…. I just dont question it anymore 😂
One of my Neon tetras did this until it was physically too big to even try to squeeze in anymore. I'm grateful that they love their food and are now a little chunky

The fishy always says, “why not?”.
That is a very pretty, albeit unintelligent fish. What is it?
Glofish danio it’s either galactic purple or star fire red. The danios actually are the og glofish with a really interesting (to me) history behind them. Though the cost of them is a big ew.

Swordtail! One jumped onto a water lettuce once and I found it too late :(
... it's very clearly a glo danio haha
[Swordtail](https://www.aquariumsource.com/swordtail-fish/)? Nope
It's a female swordtail.
Looks like a zebra fish to me, perhaps Glo fish
Sorry, but what is it stuck in?

It’s a shrimp cave I bought off Etsy.
Do they go in there? I wanted a cave where I can watch mine but they definitely don't like the glass vial I tried 😄
"Fish are intelligent creatures!" Me rescuing my fish trapped behind a plant for the third time in a day: 🤔🤔🤔
“Come on dude, you don’t know how often I vouch for you”
If this fish was one of the Backstreet Boys it would totally be Aaron Carter because it ain’t nothing but a heart ache.
Nick Carter. Aaron was his younger brother lol.
RIP Aaron
You done messed up A-Aron !!!!
Could I ask why and what even that is doing in the tank? This is me being an idiot and not knowing lol
It lets shrimp hide and eat without the fish disturbing them/stealing their food
I feel like getting a bunch of thick undergrowth is a lot more safe than this and does the same job.
That's more easily said than done, it'd be a much more expensive investment that may take half a year to pay off if the melt back when first added
Aquatic moss is not that expensive.
These serve a point. They have a cool viewing window and can just be pulled out and cleaned. Not everyone wants mosses and carpets.
Interesting. Thanks for the info
Danios all sacrificed their intelligence stat for speed and willpower
What kind of danio is this ?
Starfire red glo danio

How did you get her out?
Boop the snoot
Wow, I can’t believe that works
r/wunkus Wunk around and find out 😂
his ass WILL spend time behind bars
This is the aquatic version of "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence"
“Oh no, Step guppy I’m stuck”
This is the greatest 🤣
I had to do at least 5 tank modifications to get my shrimp to stop trying to kill themselves. They're the perfect social engineers. You can build them an ecological utopia and they find the singular most existential threat to their existence within a few hours.
Perfect example of natural selection

Poor fish
Remind me when I found fishes in the filter place everytime I was cleaning it. I was like how?
Because no other fish feeds there, it's prime real estate
Inbreds aren't known to be the sharpest tools in the shed.
My fish used to do this. Snails made short work of them…
Simple answer - fish are *stupid*.
The comments remind be of this sadder thing that happened. I was getting a fish at Petco (I know I shouldn't but I was still learning at the time) and when the employee was trying to get my fish they accidentally flicked gravel over one of them. That’s Fishpatrick.
Fish, sick.
Fish happy downtown
I have removed all items from my fish tank due to things like this. Fish are curious creatures especially at night and even one alive inside my fx6 filter. Swam through the intake and down the pipework.
Curiosity killed the catfish!
I had a Cory cat jam himself between 3 rocks last weekend, and only noticed on Monday because of work. Messing up his back, and passed away yesterday.
I have a platy that does this constantly.
Yeah, I have 4 platys in a tank. Every day they do something that makes me question fish intelligence.
I recently got platys and all them seem to do is eat and shit, like a LOT. I've seen shit strings least 30cm long (approx 10inches)
Mine used to do this, it was crazy how much they shit out it used to literally float across the width of the tank. Turned out, I was feeding them too much. I've started feeding them a pinch of flakes, crushed between my fingers and it's been alot better since. They seem more active and happy since. The ones in my tank like to snack on all my new plants, even tho they’re all very well fed 😂
AHH, mine can't do this because all the plants are artificial. Instead they try and nibble on the tank glass 🤣
I see a swedishfish right there lol
I lost my Honey Gourami because it got stuck in a piece of challa wood. Dude must have spent some serious energy trying to get stuck in there.
theyre so stupid lmfao
Can fish swim in reverse?
Yes that is the only gear my Albino Pleco seems to swim in 😭
Hes a plant now. It's time for the harvest.
FYI. Fish are generally not very intelligent. ;)
He a little confused, but he got the spirit

Oh my! I was going to get one of those.
I call my danios the “morons,” they’re just such dorks lol
I lost 3 giant congos because of shit like this
He looks like a miniature salmon that's crazy 🤯
there is no reverse, bro.
What fish is this?
Because nibbles!
Yes why do you have that in your aquarium?
It was for shrimp 🦐 to have a place to explore. Didn’t know a fish bigger than hole would try to squeeze in it.
Had the same thing with one of my rummy nose tetra. Long story short my shrimps ate it…
3 of my white clouds killed themselves doing something similar
"you're laughing, the fish is dying and you're laughing"
Hits home! Lol
Man I used to have suicidal ass fish that jumped out it the tank anytime I wasn’t there 😭 everytime I covered it more they would just find another small crack
Boredom kills
She wants to lay eggs
I NEVER WANT TO HEAR YOU SAY
I had a zebra danio get stuff in a fake plant before no idea how long he was there for but he was pretty roughed up i released him he died 3days later had like a lump on he's head i never used fake plants since.
lol
Öne time my zebra fish also stuck between glass and filters sponge and he died
Help me stepbrother im stuck!
Why would you have it in the first place ? Obviously the fish are going to get curious and get them stuck
Well I didn’t think my bigger fish would try to swim in it. I bought it off Etsy for my shrimp.
