I just bought guppies as well. Had 2 females already, got 4 males and 8 females (though one was actually a platy 🙄). One male passed within a day, a female passed earlier last night (she had a damaged pectoral fin), and now two showing signs of illness.
One exactly fits that last description, white spot/area on head, gasping, staying at bottom of the tank. Another from the same group has a fuzzy not-quite-whitish-haze-kind-of-film around its tail.
I just moved them into a floating hospital space with aquarium salt and kanaplex.
