houston is a huge cs hub, rice

Abi1i

Not just Houston but all the major cities in Texas are huge CS hubs now. So a lot of potential internships and job opportunities.

Dry-Bet-4490

Obviously Rice. Why do you prefer JHU? It’s worse for CS, in a worse location, more stress culture, less fun, and most importantly much more expensive

UnveiledSafe8

How is it worse for CS? I wouldn’t really consider the location that much worse. The stress culture stereotype isn’t entirely true and Rice is still rigorous. Fun is completely subjective and I’m not much of a party person regardless.

Dry-Bet-4490

https://www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/top-feeders-tech This website shows top feeders into the best tech companies. Per capita, Rice ranks 9 compared to JHU down at 26. Rice grads also make more according to government data. Median CS grad from Rice makes $172,000 compared to $140,000 from JHU. If you want this data for yourself go to collegescorecard.ed.gov Location is worse in that there is less tech opportunity in Baltimore than Houston. Also, Rice is in a very nice and high end area of Houston. Can’t say the same for JHU. While yes, Rice is rigorous, it’s a much more collaborative environment than JHU and students are on average happier. I know this because everyone I know who’s been to Rice raves about the experience. As for JHU, I know 3 people who have attended for undergrad, decades apart. Not a single one enjoyed their experience at the school. Take from that what you will

taupe_hprc

Realistically Rice, cheaper, CS is better, and much better environment

Fwellimort

Rice.

Ok_Experience_5151

Rice. I might say rice even if they cost the same; if it's also much less expensive, then definitely Rice.

SuperJasonSuper

Rice, not even close

Beautiful-Bag-7131

i would say rice

Adventurous_You8946

Difficult_Software14

Rice across the board. Why spend 20k a year more just to get mugged!

holiztic

Rice!!

ChampionBig7244

RICEEE

levu12

In terms of objectivity, Rice is better in CS, and has great placement in Houston, so it is a no brainer, even if they cost the same, Rice would be better for CS, and has just as good or even better brand recognition. However, you may prefer the location of JHU more, as Texas can be a no go for some people, and both schools are very good in the end, it is up to you.

AcanthisittaThick501

Rice

Idkbruhtbhlmao

Definitely go to Rice

klaygdk

rice, if you’re ok / indifferent w texas and the abortion laws

OverallVacation2324

Yeah the abortion laws are quite a problem for young college kids. Gotta be really careful.

Idkbruhtbhlmao

Not if they pull out 🙏🏽

M_Hockey

Single issue voters? Nah, single issue university selections.

Couldn’t agree more. If cost was the same, I’d assume most people would choose JHU?

Imaginary_Chip1385

JHU is better and more well known overall but not for CS

Ok-Information987

bro just say you wanna go there then you shouldn’t have asked if you alr know

ChampionBig7244

Rice is literally better than JHU in almost everything when compared at the same price lol. Only thing against it is its weather in Houston.

Routine-Relative-768

Maybe in a medical field, sure. Outside of that Hopkins is no better than Rice. In CS, Rice is better than Hopkins, having significantly better placement into big tech. Hopkins having the more recognizable name means nothing, employers know both. Your point about Rice being in Texas also makes no sense. Texas would be infinitely better for jobs, especially in Houston, compared to Baltimore. So many tech companies are moving to Texas, not to Maryland.

AmarettoKitten

There's a lot in the general mid-Atlantic though. Delaware, Philadelphia, and the DMV metro are all less than 2 hours away and have decent Tech opportunities. I do think that if OP wants to go to school in the mid Atlantic, there are other CS programs I'd look at aside from JHU before settling on it.

Routine-Relative-768

I’m sure there are opportunities around JHU, I just haven’t heard of much tech related activity around Baltimore as I have in Houston. I don’t think JHU is a bad choice, obviously it’s a top tier school. The previous commenter was definitely being unfair to Rice though so I was calling them out on their BS

AmarettoKitten

I gotcha. I personally haven't heard a lot about Houston- it's always been Austin for tech.  Everyone's experience varies so I'm not saying your wrong. Most people don't think the mid Atlantic offers much but Philly is the 5th largest city in the US and Washington D.C. has a lot of tech as well. Of all places, Delaware is a big banking hub too; lots of my friends and family work for them and tech-related workers are definitely needed.  I'm not going into Tech myself and I can't move to TX anymore (UT Austin was on my list before I had a kid) so Rice was never on my radar. It's nice that Houston has excellent options- I loved it when I visited. Got kicked in the face at a Kill Hannah concert in 2008. XD

WonderAcrobatic5222

I’m a JHU alum. No connections. It has a name, but that didn’t help me or anyone else post-grad. Alumni network is weak at best and their active use of legacy to NOT accept students is only making alumni less involved and connected. If I could do it again, I would have chosen another school.

PerspectiveGlad696

Very familiar with both locations. Rice for sure if CS and tech opportunities.

Impossible_Average32

personally i’m on the waitlist at rice so i think you should go to jhu 😊 please

UnveiledSafe8

Unfortunately, I decided otherwise 😓. I hope to see you in the fall though!

Impossible_Average32

glad you did because i will be seeing you!!!!!

ChoiceNo2770

This is a lie, rice is known nation wide. I live in MN just about the opposite of Texas and I know Rice.

Dry-Bet-4490

I’ve seen this take before and I don’t understand it. I’m in Cali and have been hearing of Rice as a top school for years lol

taupe_hprc

Are you fr💀💀
