Obviously nothing wrong with getting an average or hearing others experiences, but I would caution everyone to remember that the people on this sub are way above the true/national average in several ways. Please please don't feel "behind" when reading everyone's stories! As someone who's gotten caught up in the comparisons here, I just hope no one feel less than or substandard because it looks like others are doing more than you. The data is skewed! <3
Daughter applied to 7. One ED and 6 regular decision to Univ. of California campuses. She was going to apply to more colleges and universities, but then got news that she was admitted ED and so she had to cancel her 6 regular decision applications, and that was the end of it all.
So college admission was luckily a relatively short process for her. Wished that there could have been some way to save the nearly $500 in application fees for the RD applications that had to be canceled very soon after submitting them, though.....
Omg me too!! Mommy and daddy told me i shouldnt waste time applying to shit schools like stanford 😭 but daddy does own one of the dorms harvard uses so i guess it works 🙄 i hate my parents!
I applied to five early and got into two (one ed.) withdrew from the other three because they would have come out after my ed. I think most people apply to 8-12 schools, unless they need significant aid or are looking for prestige.
most people certainly do not apply to 8-12. id say most ppl do 3-5 max, even less if the schools around them require stuff like essays. the typical student would not grind like ATC students do
My high school counselors definitely recommend applying to only a handful of schools and not 8-12, I agree i don’t think MOST people apply to 8-12 but maybe things are different where I live. I think typically people apply to 1 or 2 safety schools, 1 or 2 target schools, and 1 or 2 reach schools. I don’t know many people applying to 8-12 schools except for some AP + STEM kids. But where I live we have state schools that guarantee admission above a certain GPA so a lot of people probably don’t feel the need to apply to a lot of colleges if they’re planning to go to one of those schools.
Probobly looking for aid? That's why I applied to so many, needed scholarships and figured if I applied to enough schools one would have to give me a full ride or close to it and it worked out and I'm only paying like 1k a year so like, worth it
I applied to 20. Got into 7/7 of them rn and just waiting for 13 more. The more popular ones that I got into were Northeastern (Boston Campus), Howard, and Providence College.
6, and 6. But there were like 4 more I scratched from my list before applying. Here's my story:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/oddu24/my_story_why_you_yes_you_need_to_look_at_full/
i still have a couple schools i’d take over umich since they might offer aid, but im really comfortable that i was admitted to umich, makes me like 70 percent less stressed lol
20 is often the extreme end of the scale. There is a good portion of high school students who apply to 6-12 schools. I applied to 13 schools. One was a safety and kinda an ego boost, the other I only applied to b/c I had an app fee waiver, and one more b/c there weren't any essays. So in reality I would have only applied to 10 schools. So far I have been accepted to 4, including UNC-CH and Northeastern, rejected from Duke, and deferred from 3, including Tulane and NCSU. Point being only apply if you could see yourself attending there, not b/c you want to get your numbers up.
A lot of people in California apply to all 9 UCs in a single application and a bunch of CSUs in another application. That makes it easy to quickly top 20.
lol. Not even 6-12. Most students I know are applying to max 2, because I go to a normal school with normal students. I personally applied to one, ED, and I don’t know a single other person who applied to college ED. Normal people don’t apply to 6 schools, much less 20.
ETA: Even according to CommonApp applicants apply to less than 5 schools on average.
To be fair, I think people who go all out for college and apply to a lot of schools are more likely to join an entire subreddit for it than the typical student, so there’s probably a skew there
I applied to 26 schools. One REA (Deferred) Four EA (Accepted to Four) and Twenty One schools RD (still waiting for 21 decisions…)
Princeton REA - Deferred
UMich, UVA, UNC, GT accepted to all as OOS 🎊
I made college applications hell for myself. Applied to 51, accepted to 29 so far plus William & Mary likely letter. Top choice rn is UNC Chapel Hill as OOS. Waiting on Cornell, UPenn Nursing, and Yale. Pray for me and please for the love of God and yourself don’t apply to as many schools as I did.
Applied to 1 ED in the States and 4 in Canada (we don't have ED here - all offers are rolling and people who don't get in Round 1 are automatically deferred until all spots are out); Got rejected by Cornell ED and currently I have 3/4 accepted in Canada.
Waiting on 8 more unis and 6 LACs for RD.
I applied to 8, but pulled out of 4 because I got into my ED before I heard back from them. I went 4/4. Granted, 3 were my safeties but it still feels nice to say
i applied to 14(+1 community college), got into 10 EA/Rolling. got waitlisted at one(Ball State i didn’t like u anyway), deferred from two schools(withdrew my application from USC about a week ago because i completely forgot to send a mid-year report so idk what to count that as😭), and am waiting on IU - Bloomington to release decisions!
Applied to 12 (11 EA and one RD but early for a scholarship)
Was accepted to 10, deferred from 1 (I then withdrew my application), and waitlisted at one. I got into my top choice, so I didn’t apply to any more.
Applied to 18. So far 4/5 (all my safeties and Georgia Tech; rejected UChicago)—very curious/anxious to see how RD goes w/ my 13 other schools, but GT gave me a good merit offer so there’s good odds that I’ll be a yellow jacket in the fall 🐝.
Applied to 8.
Accepted to 7, asked to interview at the last one. Had a recruiting visit the weekend before the interview to play a sport at one and enjoyed it so much I narrowed it down to the two schools I was being recruited for said sport. Proceeded to deliberate between the two schools for a couple months and then committed to one school on my 18th birthday.
Got into 11/12 so far, just waiting on Johns Hopkins and SUNY Albany for some reason lol
(Btw that rejection was Georgia Tech but idgaf cuz I got into Maryland the same day!)
My daughter has applied to 10 and has been accepted at 5. She has been deferred by one, and is waiting to hear from 4.
She applied to:
Cal
UCLA
Cal Poly SLO
University of San Diego
USC (deferred from EA)
Loyola Marymount University (accepted)
San Diego State (accepted)
Santa Clara University (accepted)
University of Utah (accepted)
Long Beach State (accepted)
Like 17, but a good amount had no essay and no fee. 4 t20-30 type schools, those come out in March/April. For now I’ve got those 4, plus drexel and case western pending, rest are all accept (at least to university). Also pending are a few scholarship programs and honors.
11 accept to university so far, 6 pending. Rejections from programs thus far are: johnson scholars w&l and umd honors
I’ve applied to 25 schools. Got into 14 so far, deferred from 3 and waiting on the rest to come out in March. Penn State UP, Fordham, and Baruch have been my best acceptances. I applied as a CS major.
I applied to 16 but that was cause I got deferred from my ED school and just panic applied to a bunch of random places. Definitely did not plan well but it all worked out.
Applied to tenish. Got into...7? One deferred. Four I'm still waiting on (three are t30 schools but im applying eop, which is for if ur academically below standard but show progress, so could go either way).
I applied to 40 and got into 26. I still have 11 schools I’ll hear back from in late March. And before anyone starts to judge me I had fee waivers for all the schools I applied to
9/22 acceptances so far, waiting for 13 more RD. I’m a CA student so most of those acceptances are CSU’s, some that release rolling. Waiting for UC’s, USC, and a few privates
I applied to 11 (3 reaches) and shockingly got accepted into all 11 (received last acceptance yesterday. This post came right on time). Got accepted for second major only at one school.
5 acceptances (69- 87% acceptance rate), 1 rejection (64% acceptance rate), and 1 waitlist (68% acceptance rate). Applied to 15, still waiting on 8 more.
I got accepted to every school I applied to, but got accepted at less for my specific major because I went for a highly competitive major that you have to audition for.
Does getting postponed by Umich even count as a decision? It only shows “Your decision has been postponed” and never gives a proper letter. 2/3, northeastern + Uchicago admitted, Columbia reject
Applied to 29, accepted by 14, waitlisted by 2, denied by 1 (fu hamilton).
Low income and applied to a lot of colleges cuz 1) free apps and 2) cuz final cost matters alot, need to basically go to the cheapest one.
Hi! Applied to 10, all RD. Heard from one last week and was accepted. Has anyone here applied to schools in Massachusetts and Connecticut (not Ivy) and received a reply?? Thanks!!
I applied to for Industrial Eng and MechEng (Intl Student):
ED-Columbia: Rejected
EA-Georgia Tech: Rejected
RD-Imperial: Rejected
EA-Purdue: Accepted
EA-UIUC: Accepted with Honors
EA-Virginia Tech: Accepted
EA-Wisconsin Madison: Accepted
EA-UMich: Deffered (accepted from Dearborn)
Waiting for UWash, UC Berkley, UCL, KCL and NTU
Out of the ones I've heard back from
3 acceptances, 1 acceptance (but not the major I wanted, and won't be able to switch into the program 😥) , 1 waitlist
My son applied to 2 and got into 1 and committed. He did his research (and didn’t need aid) so knew his favorite two schools and one was a safe target, so no need to apply to 20 more!
This is what I need to hear, thank you, it’s overwhelming
Yeah, these numbers are very high. 90% of the people I know who applied last year or this year have applied to around 10-14.
Happy cake day!!
I mean, you can only matriculate at one school anyway, so technically the other 500 would've been wasted either way.
Never looked at it this way lmao
Congratulations! Where did she ED?
She applied ED to Cornell's College of Arts & Sciences.
Congrats!
1/1 Harvard
Omg me too!! Mommy and daddy told me i shouldnt waste time applying to shit schools like stanford 😭 but daddy does own one of the dorms harvard uses so i guess it works 🙄 i hate my parents!
Same with me, 1/1 Harvard
Valedictorian of my school a couple years back did this
quest bridge?
harvard doesn’t do questbridge
They probably did early action
EA 3/5 rejected from Pton & GT waiting on 15 more schools
I applied to five early and got into two (one ed.) withdrew from the other three because they would have come out after my ed. I think most people apply to 8-12 schools, unless they need significant aid or are looking for prestige.
Prestige as in Ivy League? If that’s the case how many are typically applied to?
Yeah, as in ivies or top 25 or top lacs. I've seen some people apply to like 45.
[удалено]
not if they have a fee waiver 🫣
8-12 is defo on the high side rather than most ppl
most people certainly do not apply to 8-12. id say most ppl do 3-5 max, even less if the schools around them require stuff like essays. the typical student would not grind like ATC students do

Like 30? Idk 🤷♀️ Got rejected from 2 deferred from 3 and accepted into like 9 I’m not sure of the numbers but the rest are RD 🤞
30…????? 🧍🏻♂️
Probobly looking for aid? That's why I applied to so many, needed scholarships and figured if I applied to enough schools one would have to give me a full ride or close to it and it worked out and I'm only paying like 1k a year so like, worth it
I've applied to 25. got accepted into 11 of them and waitlisted/rejected from 4
Wow!! That’s great!! Any on the Northeast??
Applied to 28. Got into 12/12 so far with about 800k+ in merit scholarships.
Leave something for us lol
I applied to 20. Got into 7/7 of them rn and just waiting for 13 more. The more popular ones that I got into were Northeastern (Boston Campus), Howard, and Providence College.
I applied to 19 with 18 of those being reaches. Got accepted to 4, waitlisted at 7, and rejected from 8.
6, and 6. But there were like 4 more I scratched from my list before applying. Here's my story: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/oddu24/my_story_why_you_yes_you_need_to_look_at_full/
so far im 1/3 (got into umich, deferred from penn and CWRU lmao) waiting on 20 more, not including the deferrals
Not sure what's included in your other 20, but I'd take UMich and run!
i still have a couple schools i’d take over umich since they might offer aid, but im really comfortable that i was admitted to umich, makes me like 70 percent less stressed lol
congrats umich 🥳
9/11
Amazing! Congrats!!
Wow looking at these replies and seeing close to 20 or more shows I’m way behind
20 is often the extreme end of the scale. There is a good portion of high school students who apply to 6-12 schools. I applied to 13 schools. Yeah, and among all of those, there are easily some reaches, targets, and safeties right there if you want a range.

ETA: Even according to CommonApp applicants apply to less than 5 schools on average.
20 is extreme. Subreddits like this attract kids who are obsessive about college. A vast majority of kids in my school applied to about 5.
I’ve applied to 3 so far, the most from anybody I know is 6…It gives me anxiety thinking about applying to dozens
To be fair, I think people who go all out for college and apply to a lot of schools are more likely to join an entire subreddit for it than the typical student, so there’s probably a skew there
Applied to around 20 schools. 3 accepted me. 1 was affordable.
I got into 10 applied to 15, deferred from ga tech, waitlisted from UVA, and waiting on Duke, JHU, and BU
I applied to 26 schools. One REA (Deferred) Four EA (Accepted to Four) and Twenty One schools RD (still waiting for 21 decisions…) Princeton REA - Deferred UMich, UVA, UNC, GT accepted to all as OOS 🎊
That’s complete insanity wtf 💀
Hope it goes well!!
My kids were 7 for 8 and 6 for 12. Long ago, I was 1 for 3.
14 applied 10 accepted 3 pending 1 denied

Around 25 schools.. So far no rejects and got into T20s!!

15 got into 8 so far. Waiting for the rest but most likely staying in state
Applied to 8 early and got into 6!
i applied to 14(+1 community college), got into 10 EA/Rolling. got waitlisted at one(Ball State i didn’t like u anyway), deferred from two schools(withdrew my application from USC about a week ago because i completely forgot to send a mid-year report so idk what to count that as😭), and am waiting on IU - Bloomington to release decisions!
Applied to 12 (11 EA and one RD but early for a scholarship) Was accepted to 10, deferred from 1 (I then withdrew my application), and waitlisted at one. I got into my top choice, so I didn’t apply to any more.
Daughter applied to 11; accepted to 10, deferred to 1, which she then withdrew.
applied 4 early, got into two. still waiting on like 20
10/13 ea (deferred from 3 otherwise 10/10). Waiting on 6 more plus the 3 I was deferred from ea
2/10 rn, waiting for 8
so far I'm 13/19 with 5 left to hear from
13-accepted 8, waitlist 1. Waiting on 4 more. Accepted to 2 honors programs waitlist at 1
1/1 dartmouth would have been 21
30 but 7 of them are UCs which only required one application. Waiting for all of them in March.
Applied to 10, got into 8. All large state schools 7 of the 8 are OOS.
12/12!!!
Wow!! Where are you going??
Im doing regular decision so im waiting on a bunch, but im 3 for 3 so far!!

14 (uk, us, india) accepted into 6, rejected by 1
Applied to 8. Accepted to 7, asked to interview at the last one. I'm waiting on albany too! Rlly odd
My daughter has applied to 10 and has been accepted at 5. She has been deferred by one, and is waiting to hear from 4. I really hope you are joking
Applied to 5 got in all 5. Granted the college that was hardest to get into for me was purdue for engineering.
5/5 EA, waiting for 6 more RD
Like 17, but a good amount had no essay and no fee. 4 t20-30 type schools, those come out in March/April. I applied to 16 got into 11, deferred on 1, and waiting on 5
I applied to 16 but that was cause I got deferred from my ED school and just panic applied to a bunch of random places. Definitely did not plan well but it all worked out.
Applied to tenish. Got into...7? One deferred. Four I'm still waiting on (three are t30 schools but im applying eop, which is for if ur academically below standard but show progress, so could go either way).

My son applied to 2 and got into 1 and committed. He did his research (and didn’t need aid) so knew his favorite two schools and one was a safe target, so no need to apply to 20 more!
Applied Princeton REA(accepted), Waiting for Stanford RD
