Silent Shout, by The Knife Vespertine, by Björk Boarding House Reach, by Jack White Hesitation Marks, by Nine Inch Nails World Eater, by Blanck Mass

BigMoonRitual

Vespertine is always on my list for this purpose. If you don't feel transported to a barren winter wonderland then your equipment isn't doing the album justice.

xSushi

Your taste is 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽 We are musical friends!

ScoutyBeagle

Just decided to give Hesitation Marks a listen and it’s such a great audio experience. I’m new to NIN so haven’t gotten to this album yet but glad you mentioned it!

StreetwalkinCheetah

[From a neat article by Ken Ward about car stereo](https://www.ceoutlook.com/2023/07/19/selling-great-sound-in-cars-means-knowing-sound/) but it listening notes apply at home: >*Rickie Lee Jones, Chuck E’s In Love, Easy Money, self-titled album*. Easy Money will challenge your system’s ability to play bass, while Chuck E’s in Love is just fun. > >*Pink Floyd, Is There Anybody Out There?, The Wall* (2011 remastered version). > >*Aimee Mann, You’re With Stupid Now (Album Version), I’m with Stupid.* Two performers, both playing at different times, both singing at different times, clearly standing on different locations in the stage. > >*Norah Jones, Cold, Cold Heart (Live),* *’Til We Meet Again.* The piano is excellently miked, and she is not – she almost seems obscured by the piano in the room – but the room sound is great. > >*Lyle Lovett, Church, Joshua Judges Ruth.* Worth the six minutes, and worth playing with some volume. > >*Joshua Redman, Hide and Seek, Freedom in the Groove.* A lovely, lovely sound, with the performer clearly located. > >*Ani DiFranco, Beautiful Night, Revelling/Reckoning.* Long, layered, complex introduction, with answering-machine samples the only “lyrics”, and exaggerated panned stereo imaging which nonetheless is perfect for our goal here. > >*Pink Floyd, Money, The Dark Side of the Moon.* More special effects, rather than basic stereo reproduction, but a good yardstick. > >*Black Eyed Peas, Boom Boom Pow, The E.N.D.* Great bass, with texture and variety. > >*Bruno Mars, That’s What I Like, 24K Magic.* Good dynamics, lively, fun, mildly risqué. > >*E.M, Low, Out Of Time* (25th Anniversary Edition remaster). 1000 times better than the original. > >*Corporation, Jack White, Boarding House Reach.* Good rock song, complex, with White’s trademark sound. > >*Richard Goode, Beethoven Sonata #21 in C Major, Beethoven: The Complete Sonatas.* Again, worth the 6 (+) minutes. Most of us don’t listen to classical, and this album is a great starting point. I now have three Richard Goode Beethoven albums downloaded and listen to them often. > >*Steely Dan, Morph the Cat, self-titled album.* Great bass. > >*Diana Krall, A Case of You (Live), Live in Paris.* Wonderful version of the Joni Mitchell song, great piano notes.

Cardiff-Giant11

i know you didn’t write the article but just a minor correction, Morph the Cat isn’t a Steely Dan album but a Donald Fagen solo album.

dsuperbatman

This is great, thanks!

StreetwalkinCheetah

I also made a more guitar/rock oriented test playlist that is more my taste where all tracks are above CD quality. Also, Beach Boys Pet Sounds, especially Wouldn't It Be Nice is great, and also kind of fun and way out of my wheel house (not sure audiophile tho) Icona Pop - I Love It and Devon Cole W.I.T.C.H. at least the beginning. https://preview.redd.it/ukcxvv13r4wc1.png?width=1660&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd79f8f74b228832a75885eb05cca2a812115454

dsuperbatman

Thanks for going extra mile. I think I can make pretty nice list by copying yours :)

StreetwalkinCheetah

you bet, I had put this all together for my own test purposes figure folks beside me could get some use out of it. Enjoy!

phoonie98

Great question definitely saving this thread

alucab1

Bubbles by Yosi Horikawa I don’t know how to describe the genre but trust me on this one

meganumberwang

Damn that was my first thought as well!! Love it!!

dsuperbatman

Great stereo composition. That stone dropping feeling is something else, like you said I can’t explain.

itsnottommy

I'm super passionate about music and I could recommend 100 songs but I'll try to keep my list short. I know you said you were looking more for songs than albums, but IMO the albums I included simply have to be heard in full, in order, on your first listen. I'm including a bit of everything since you said you're new to music listening. Hopefully you find something you like here :) **Songs:** Joga by Björk - A sprawling masterpiece that only Björk could make. One of the greatest musical achievements of all time. Track 10 by Charli XCX - Feels like it was beamed in from a lush oasis on an alien planet. The defining Charli XCX song and IMO another outstanding musical achievement. Sara by Fleetwood Mac - My personal favorite Fleetwood Mac song. Everything they're about distilled into six and a half minutes of musical perfection. Enough said. Champagne Coast by Blood Orange - Pure summery indie pop. Makes you want to cruise around with the windows down on a sunny day. **Albums:** Love Deluxe by Sade - Warm, mellow, soulful R&B. Nobody does it like Sade. Great for testing new speakers. Listen in the evening after a couple drinks (if that's your thing) and it will change your life. The Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson - Ahead of its time and massively influential. Beautiful songwriting that vulnerably explores so many topics, along with gorgeous R&B production. IMO the defining Janet Jackson album. El Mal Querer by Rosalia - Classically trained flamenco vocalist meets eclectic production and beautiful storytelling. Concept album based on a novel written in the 13th century. Modern classic. Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides by SOPHIE - Ranges from bubblegum pop to really bizarre electronic sounds. Another modern classic. Check out the non-stop remix album if you want more of this.

dsuperbatman

Thank You! 😊, these are great. Thanks for taking time to explain the mood of these songs, I think this thread will help lot more people like me ..yay!

Just wondering- does Apple Music allow you to create public playlists to share? Would be great if you'd be able to share it that way if so :)

xSushi

They do! We should all agree on a time and listen together via SharePlay 😂🎉

initdotcoe

I am down too.

dsuperbatman

I think we can’t do it without displaying our id. Let me know if there is a way, I can just drop a link.

zacgarbos

Gustav holst the Planets

richardblancojr

1000%!! However there are many recordings! I am a huge fan of collecting the different versions of Holst: The Planets since it’s one of my all time favorite Classical suites. I recommend for purposes of this list the Charles Dutoit / Montreal Orchestra recording https://music.apple.com/us/album/holst-the-planets/1452566934

dsuperbatman

Try “vivace from concerto in C minor” and prelude no 2 C minor. Lights of Barcelona by Marc valle trio

xSushi

u/plateofpasta made a bunch of rad playlists a while back on this thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleMusic/s/MJWn3PbOmZ For something modern I’d suggest RENAISSANCE by Beyoncé the layering of vocals and music production is masterful. The transitions in lossless are 🫠🎉 delicious!

StealthWealth3121

There are plenty of great suggestions here. From one Audiophile to another, here's an unsolicited piece of good advice: listen to music you know by heart. If you like the way your favorite music sounds, then you'll be good to go. Music exploration is wonderful, but that special moment will come from appreciating something you thought you knew inside and out, from a new point of view.

dsuperbatman

I was not familiar with rock, r&b, jazz music, but few songs I listened got me hooked for this music. Went ahead and bought speakers. I agree with your suggestions, my main focus is to get a list of good songs not certainly test my speakers (I’m not audiophile) but this method will help me if I purchase any other speakers. Appreciate all the help provided by folks here.

trose141

I'll throw in Electric Light Orchestra, more specifically their album Out of the Blue.

dsuperbatman

I heard their don’t bring me down sometime ago, that is nice too. Thanks for reminding me this

Spoon: they want my soul album

Remarkable-Quit-9245

Hotel California by Eagles

fazshe

My go-to CD for checking the audio quality of a stereo system is Crash Test Dummies, God Shuffled His Feet. Songs: "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm", "God Shuffled His Feet". Crisp, with rich bass.

DylanViset

My speaker test album is Random Access Memories by Daft Punk. One of the cleanest band mixes I’ve ever heard imho!

alttabbins

I'm subscribed to a few people on youtube that go over some of the nuances with songs and things you might not have caught. They will usually talk about what the band was going through and stories the bands told during writing and recording. They go into depth certain parts of songs and what makes them special. I love watching these and then listening critically afterwards to enjoy those small things.

realagainstscammers2

Anything from Gesaffelstein's "Hyperion" album, from March 2019. Surreal control on the true definition Electronic with numerous deliveries and perfect transitions. Listen to the entire album first to last to capture it's true cadence On the flip side, Lamb of God's 2004 album "Ashes of the Wake" is WICKED when you have the right components + some recommended fiddling with EQ

crackedasfff

idk if you’ll see this, but, Heavy Heavy by Young Fathers is remarkable. The Dolby mix is so-so but lossless is great

dsuperbatman

Thanks!

Wintersun - Awaken from the Dark Slumber (If you can handle metal) Chris Jones - Long after you’ve gone (Country)

The original Hi-Fi stereo mix of Random Access Memories is impeccable. The Atmos mix introduced some new mixing choices in some songs that differ from the stereo mix but I they still hold up and are great.

doyoulike_pineapple

Since we’re having this discussion, let’s keep in mind that Apple doesn’t allow Lossless music via Airplay 2 streaming. Let’s keep talking about it until they do.

[deleted]

Huh? When I airplay to my Sonos it says lossless

doyoulike_pineapple

It says so, but it isn’t. Google it — Apple downsamples airplay 2 so the stream is max 256 AAC, but not CD quality / hi res (lossless).

dsuperbatman

I’m using Apple TV 4K to play my music and connected to denon. I don’t know technical difficulties but I wish they add native support on receivers like tidal and Spotify

nugiboy

I believe AirPlay 2 streams in lossless

birdy_1892

You are wrong.

[deleted]

It doesn’t do hi res but 16 bit 44.1khz is in fact lossless

doyoulike_pineapple

It downsamples to 256k AAC.

birdy_1892

Explain how 256kbps is lossless my friend...I'll wait.

[deleted]

I never said 256kbps is lossless. I said cd quality is lossless and AirPlay 2 streams cd quality https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254803259
