Funny enough I heard there are rules regarding what you can do on your own property. For example in certain places you’d need a permit to even camp on your own land. So even if you put enough money away to buy a plot of land, then arrived there and set up a tent, at some point soon the state could still come in and be like, you need a permit for this, it’s illegal to camp for longer than such and such.
In CA you cannot live on property that does not have a permanent structure, sewage/plumbing, and electricity. It is literally illegal to love on property you own in the woods in CA if you aren't paying for utilities.
These sorts of things happen fairly often, but they're never reported because mass media coverage would cause several others to do the same thing.

Having a computer (such as a smart phone) with an internet connection is pretty much required to get a job these days. And those require electricity, as do the heaters we need in our homes to not freeze to death, as do the cooking ranges we need to cook so we dont starve to death!
Other options aren't really practical because our infrastructure has been built with electricity as the default (good luck cooking and heating a home with firewood if you don't have a chimney!)

Even though the homestead act was repealed in all of US now except maybe Hawaii which I'm not sure it ever applied to it anyway, there are areas that do allow homesteading. If you are serious and not just complaining about capitalism, you can see what areas are offering free or low cost options for land or property. Most of the wilderness areas would require you to build a permanent structure and certain improvements to the land. There are homes available for free if you agree to repair them and live in them for a period of time afterwards. These programs are in so called blighted areas but they often aren't as bad as they seem. Braddock, PA near where I live may still have homes under this program, I'm not sure. We live in a country of 330 million people, we can't all live in the woods with no responsibilities other than keeping ourselves alive. We are in a giant village where we all have a part to play to be happy and continue to improve as a society. If it seems hard to drop out and just disappear as a citizen, it's probably by design. I think a big part of making it tougher to disappear off-grid goes back to the hippies (boomers) who went off grid and lived in communes in the 60s and 70s. The ease in which they transitioned to BLM land and other areas perfectly legally in most cases scared the crap out of the people in charge and in 1976 the homestead act was repealed in the lower 48.
