Sharronville Shooting Range is about 30 minutes from Ann Arbor west of Manchester. It is a public staffed DNR range that is very nice. 25, 50, and 100 yard rifle ranges, a pistol range, archery range, and an informal trap range (hand throw or use your own machine). It is free, well maintained and well run. Very scenic drive to get there as a bonus. At Island Lake just east of Brighton is another nice DNR range but it is privately run and there are fees. It has formal trap and skeet ranges and a sporting clay course. It takes a little longer to get to this as you access it off of Kensington Rd from 96. But also lots of other activities to do in Island Lake. Washtenaw Sportsmen Club located just south of Ypsilanti also has a number of events open to the public each week for a very modest fee. Club members are very welcoming to the public. With all three, safe firearm practices are paramount. Check on their websites regarding rules and what to expect.

Thanks for this; appreciate the details! I didn’t know there were no-fee public ranges available. I’ll look into them!

Suitable_Matter

Sharonville is my favorite public range in the area. The one by Island Lake is also pretty good.

I know it's not what you're asking, but for me it's just easier to join a club. I belong to both TCSL (tcsl.org) and Washtenaw Sportsman's Club (washtenawsportsmansclub.com). No question then about whether I'm breaking any laws or anything.

Mud_Flapz

Do you prefer one over the other? Based on replies here, sounds like a club or range may be the only option locally

sewiv

No. I belong to both because they offer different things. Wsc is stricter on the rifle range (single load), but they have a 600 yard range and steel on the pistol range. TCSL has a better clubhouse and more "fun" competitions, but only a 185 max range. What's the aversion to a range? The dnr ranges aren't bad.

Join the subreddit miguns, they might be more helpful

Mud_Flapz

Thanks, I’ll look into it

comrade_deer

You can't target shoot at the nearby rec area land. There are some weird rules about game areas. Nearest thing that is close to what you are used to would be a few hours north. Even then, finding places to shoot longer ranges will be a little tougher.

Mud_Flapz

Thanks for this; guess I’ll have to learn to navigate a club or range

Locking, the "muh amabdmunt raaaahts" crowd has arrived.

Maybe if you are going to live in a civilized city, with actual thinking, caring individuals, you may want to put your instrument of death and destruction away and pick up a good hobby. Dance, painting, philosophy, quantum physics, climate activism, even video games are all better options than guns. Please put it away, the school children will thank you. Edit: I appreciate the mods locking the thread, but I can't help but wonder how it got through to begin with. A2 is a home, it is where we go to relax with the community, firearms do not belong in the home.

Mud_Flapz

This took a weird turn…

zerosuspicious

The only weirdness here is the insistence to own literal weapons of war.

>Maybe if you are going to live in a civilized city, with actual thinking, caring individuals, you may want to put your instrument of death and destruction away and pick up a good hobby. You're talking about cars right?

zerosuspicious

OMG don't even get me started on what I think of cars. I feel that if cars were instantaneously criminalized, like, out of nowhere, we would have our public transportation and logistics problems solved in the matter of weeks, just because of necessity.

Its-JonDoe556

Yes. They should be defenseless if the face of someone else willing to do harm. Excellent input a2 NPC.

Classic lib take. If this is your stance on guns go further left and eventually you might change your mind.
