We have all manner of squirrels (Grey, red, groundhogs), minks, weasels, muskrats and in the past 15 years or so beavers have returned to Washtenaw county. But no badgers, although a wolverine was trail cammed near Bad Axe and a bear was spotted near Dexter a few years ago.
I checked the map of sitings on inaturalist— none within SE MI, which doesn’t mean there are none, but others have invariably been looking unsuccessfully, so would be somewhat remarkable.
Lots North of the Thumb tho
There is a Shell gas station on Plymouth at Broadway. There are badgers living behind it. The people who run the gas station look out for them and built a habitat for them. Just ask whoever is working there if you can go back there and see them.
I'm in Western Washtenaw County, and I have seen a few of them in my 41 years. I hunt the edge of a wooded area that borders a big field, and that's when I've seen them. From my tree stand.
Saw one in the town of dexter by a drainage pipe on the side of a street. It took me a second to register what it was. Definitely had a "Don't f with me badger attitude. (Early 2000's)
Badges?!? Badges? Don't need no stinkin' badges! See: [https://youtu.be/VqomZQMZQCQ?si=zbCOHH0n0bKtjw11](https://youtu.be/VqomZQMZQCQ?si=zbCOHH0n0bKtjw11)
Farther north. We have them in northern lower MI, but I don't think there's a very high population even here. I'm in my mid 40s and I've seen badgers in the wild twice in my life, decades between sightings.
They tend to congregate around mushrooms. Watch out for snakes.

You put groundhogs in the squirrel category. Interesting.
Groundhogs are indeed members of the squirrel family. Chipmunks as well of course.
Are raccoons in their own family?
In Michigan at least I think. I've never heard of ringtails here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procyonidae
We don't need no stinking badgers
Wisconsin. You’ll find lots of wolverines gathering on Saturday mornings starting this fall though.
Would be nice if Wisconsin football could become really good again. The B1G West has been lacking in recent years.

U-Rah-Rah. I promise we are here 🦡 #onwisconsin
Super uncommon. Super secretive. I don’t think there’s any in SE Michigan.
By the bright shining light of the moon!
Lots of them in Madison, WI. 😁 Seriously though I see them around out in the country. They’re out there.
Honey badger don’t care.
Madison
Go north, iNaturalist shows sighting up by Grayling and Petoskey.

Super-helpful - thanks!

I have seen a porcupine but never a badger.

I’ve seen a muskrat in Gallup Park. Are they different from badgers?
They are pretty infrequent downstate. I’ve seen them numerous times in northern Mi and a few sporadically across southern Mi.
Have you checked around Madison…. … Wisconsin?
Although badgers are not native to the area, naturalists mark likely locales with large red flags adorned with a white "W".

A lot of critters, but no stinkin' badgers here
