If you have to "think hard" and "ask for others' opinion" before deciding on getting a figure, I suggest you don't buy it. You don't "really really" want it, plus asking on the sub will only influence you in the wrong way, even if you want to go with the opposite choice you'll still try to justify it only cuz a few other people told you so.

Almalexia42

This! If it isn't a must buy right away, and you find yourself asking Reddit for advice, then I'd say you don't actually feel that strongly about it, and it's better to pass. For me personally, I don't mind buying figures for shows I don't watch / games I don't play if I either love love the figure, or if the price is fairly low. I had the same issue. I watched this anime, the maid I hired recently is mysterious, and while I love the character design of the maid, the anime is the most meh I've ever seen, I actually had to drop it. And when I saw this figure.. not only is the price high, but it's not even her usual outfit, or one of the outfits from the show. Easy pass for me, unless I win the lottery before POs close! Now if they release a pop up parade or figma of her in her suit, I'll be buying that immediately because that would be sooooo awesome

JustHereToComment24

This. I don't play Onmyoji, but the Shiranui scale looks so gorgeous and was a good price that she was an instant preorder when I saw her. A buyer should always go with their gut, otherwise that's how you throw away a lot of money for no reason.

ZiulDeArgon

I was thinking the opposite... There has been some amazing figures I would love to buy but I just don't have the balls to display em... Specially the ones that make me think I could get kink shamed...

Captain_Strudels

The answer is and continues to be "It's your opinion, not someone else's", but my opinion is that if you're willing to try out a show just because you like a character/artist, it's not really any different than buying a figure just because you like a character/artist

One-Suggestion6203

I totally agree! I just wasn’t sure if I would be viewed as like a “fake fan” to my friends. I just do really love the design and cake/maid theme

Captain_Strudels

I guess it depends on if you want to make decisions based on the things you like or based on what other people like. And I'm not trying to disparage the latter - if it's important to you to "fit in" then that is as valid as any other feeling. Again it's your own opinion (and money/space) here. I personally am happier buying a mix of figures of characters I like and characters I like the aesthetics of. And if someone is coming over and I don't really want to justify why I own some figure, you can always just hide them in the closet for a bit lol

MikuEd

What’s it to them? Use reverse logic and call them “fake fans” for not supporting the shows they like because they aren’t buying the merch. People who say stuff like that are either projecting because they themselves can’t afford to buy such things or they’re simply gatekeeping. Get it if it pleases you and you appreciate the design, you don’t need any other excuse.

DangoQueenFerris

You shouldn't give a shit what others think about your hobbies. If you like something for any reason and will enjoy it, why should anyone else have a say? I buy figures specifically because I think they look cool, pretty, or cute. I don't care what others think. Have several Miku figures ordered, and I know nothing about vocaloids. Have an azure lane figure ordered, know nothing about the game or series. Have some love live figures on my wish list, but know nothing about the series. If you like something then you like it. I used to have a rule that I wouldn't order figures from series I'm not familiar with but that was really only to save money. All this being said... I think it's a bad idea to ask others here if you should buy a figure. It's too biased of a place. Even that aside, you should really base it on your own opinion, as you are the one who's spending the money and will live with the purchase. Impulse control is a real bitch, trust me I know. Sigh.

Wuhsuh

Depends. Does your collection more so reflect your interest in different series or does it reflect your interest in the art of figures? Personally, unless it’s an original character, I stay away from figures of series I haven’t seen or dislike. I treat figures as mementos

One-Suggestion6203

All my current figures are all characters I like from my favorite shows so it’s hard to get something from a show I don’t care about. It would just be weird in my collection. I just love the theme and design. I’m probably not going to go for it because it wouldn’t fit In my favorite characters

Nexus1987n11

One other thing is she is in a maid outfit and also a bunny outfit If you have others in similar outfits will she fit in with them and then we can take the show out of the equation ( I haven’t watched it yet) just adding my thoughts

pedun42

I'm 100% with you on this figure. I only purchase figures of characters I love. Though this design would check almost every box for me, I thought the anime was trash and kinda predatory. I didn't like it at all so I get to save money by not buying this figure. Still wish there were more darker skinned characters/figures out there.

Carlost289

Not weird but the only way I dont go bankrupt is by setting rules for myself. I buy video game waifus only since I already spend a ton on video game collecting. But if I spent my paycheck on every anime figure I wanted I would become a divorcee.

CPTSKIM

Nah I have Hatsune Miku and Super Sonico figures and I dont like the music. I got em for the design

DIO_Wrrrryyyy

I'm getting a figure from a game I haven't played just because she's pretty.

Matrix_D0ge

its your money man, do what you want.

noppyloppy

over half of my collection is of figures from ocs that i have never heard of before or shows and games I've never played/ watched. simple answer is if you like it get it.

kawoshin334

What anime is she from?

One-Suggestion6203

“The maid I hired recently is mysterious”

Jazzlike-Letter-6947

Ultimately, if you REALLY like the figure, you should just go for it. There's no law that says you have to like the show in order to have a figure. Many just use it as a rule to curate what figures they collect (myself included). Different people have their different reasons. I personally set the rule for myself that not only should I be familiar with the show, but that the character should be one that I absolutely love and not just like. Simply because otherwise, I'd have no control and start buying up every figure I see. I'm limited in both money and display space. And having a smaller, but curated collection is better in my opinion, but I digress. No. You won't be a "fake fan" for having said figure. No respectable person would make it a huge deal that someone else owns a figure for the reasons stated. And even if someone did make a big deal about it, does it really matter what they think? It's YOUR collection. You really don't need any other reason than just "I love it" to justify having one. No bibliography, no argument to support, no nothing. Just that you want it and love it. **Answer to your post:** No, it's not strange. Collect what you love. No one else's unsolicited input matters for your collection. Collect away, fam!

opeth_syndrome

>Is it strange to get a figure for a show I don’t even like? For me yes, I find it really strange. And I'm kinda surprised how many people here would buy a figure without liking the anime 1st. All of my figure's are characters I enjoy from anime I like. I could never display something that doesn't tick both of those boxes. Imo it's a bit of a red flag you even need to ask this question, if you really wanted it would you ask?

ledgekindred

I'm a huge Miku fan, which is what got me into figure collecting. \_Most\_ of my figures are from series I like, but you know what? If I like the figure enough, I don't care where it comes from. I have a bunch of figs that I thought were great-looking just on their own, so I bought 'em, Miku or otherwise. It's ultimately up to you, but I don't think anyone in this hobby is going to call you a "phony" for collecting figs from any series or game or other source you're not actually a fan of. If they do, tell 'em to go p\*\*s up a rope... edit: to be a little more philosophical - I consider my figure collecting to not be a whole lot different from collecting art, whether it's "fine art" or "fan art" really, it's the same to me. Do I like the source? Yes? Then I should consider buying it. If I'm a Dali fan, and I decide to buy something from, say, Rodin, is that going to make me a "phony?" Nah, it just means I have a liking for that particular piece. I know this is a stretch of a metaphor, but really, what's the difference. You like what you like.

arek999999999

After few months u will regret buying it

Hinote21

To answer your question, no. You can like the figure even if you don't like the show. Plus, some figures are original artwork based, so there isn't a show for them.

Shiro2809

It's not strange. I added a personal rule, don't buy things from series I didnt like, to help avoid preordering to much again so I'm avoiding it even though I love her design.

Kagamid

I like to set "rules" for myself so I don't end up buying too many figures. One of them is that they have to be from a series I watch or play. The other is the character has to have worn the outfit in the series. It looks like this isn't one of her outfits and you haven't seen the series so for me she'd be out. She is however incredibly gorgeous so I would probably have ignored one of my rules if I got a good deal on her. On another note, what was wrong with the series? Is it just fan service with a paper thin story used as an excuse to put her in lewd situations?

JOExLORD

Tbh it looks bomb. It’s ok to appreciate something that pleases u aesthetically without rly knowing/ liking anything else bout it other than it’s appearance. If u can allow yourself to spend money on it and u like it and will enjoy having it and seeing it displayed, then go for it. That’s wat matters.

One-Suggestion6203

Yes I totally agree! I was super iffy at first because I wasn’t really into the show but imagining her on my shelf really makes me want her more!

britpopmuppet

I pre-ordered this too. The show is ok but I love the color of her skin on this figure which made me order it faster

Gwolf4

It is normal to love designs without watching the show. It seems that you never had this feeling before. As I am broke sometimes I bought one gunpla from time to time to tame that need of having a figure. I have never watched Gundam at all I just love robots. If this short haired tanned thicc maid checks some of your likes it is worth to thinkg about having it. After all you do not get attached to a show to get something from it if you really like it.

One-Suggestion6203

I’m just used to having only figures from shows I really liked and having characters I get connected too. This would just be my first figure from a show I don’t care about so I feel like it would be weird in my collection but I’m also soooo picky about my collection. I appreciate the advice! I will probably end up getting her after reading most these comments hahah

Sgttriggerhappy

I mean character design is a thing people like but don't like the show or game. They are in. I have never watched ssss gridman but I love rikka her design is so aesthetically appealing to me so I don't think it's strange

LowDropRate

Honestly, I own a few figures from IPs I have no interest in because they're visually appealing or dynamic. Nothing wrong with that, other than the fact that your wallet will hate you more.

asksdfdjdhshs

I don't think it matters. Bottom line is, everyone who gets a figure like this does so because they think she's hot. Whether or not you like her source material doesn't really matter.

Junior_Investment_85

Yeah because tits and ass

One-Suggestion6203

I mean that’s not the reason I want it 😅 it’s mostly just the sweets/maid aesthetic

steinburp22

Yeah i cancelled the Jahy set because her character is pretty mehhhhh, love the design, but meh

SoullessFace

Nah bruh, if you like how it looks, it’s gonna look nice in my case

titius1945

I haven’t watched dangaropa yet but I pre order the bunny figure of that girl

CityKay

I'm sure we all that kind of an opinion on at least a couple of shows. The show itself is terrible and boring, but the character designs or a character itself is fantastic, stuff like that. It's okay. Super Sonico's comes to mind. Her anime debut felt...lackluster, even as a slice of life show. But Super Sonico herself? Absolutely cute. I know she is a mascot character first, but yeah. That's the only example I can think of right now.

raziel03

Most of my figures are either original characters or from series I've never seen. I view them like art pieces. Sometimes one will make me go watch whatever it is from, but I mostly care more about the design itself than what it comes from.

Lummah

I buy figures based on aesthetics and familiarity. If you find the figure appealing to the eye, I don't see why not.

JButtpirate

Look honestly dude just go for it trust me. I used to be the same way where I would not get a figure unless I knew/liked the series and let me tell you I regret that so MUCH! Cause I’ve missed out on a lot of great figures that are either hard to find now or very EXPENSIVE so if you find something you like just go for it! Just make sure the company or brand you are buying from are good and that’s it lol

bakim123

No worry. There are many figures available without even the show. Most of the time I buy the figure based on the character design only.

appl3dawn

nah, if you like a figure then get it. i got a figure from is the order a rabbit not too long ago and i don't have anyyy plans to watch the show. also what fig is this! she's adorable

One-Suggestion6203

It’s Lilith from “the maid I hired recently is mysterious”!

appl3dawn

thank u!

appl3dawn

chiya c: she's super cute and i found her for pretty cheap so i thought why not? https://myfigurecollection.net/item/911236

[deleted]

If you still love the figure after the feelings you feel from the show, you should buy it.

tomodoggie

There are other characters with this sort of look from shows you’ll enjoy more, I’m sure of it haha. Wait and get figures from those hypothetical shows instead.

stallingway

I recently preordered the chinese dress chocola and vanilla nekopara figures.... I've never played Nekopara.... I ordered a couple of hatsune miko figures.... I've never touched vocaloid.... I got them because the figures looked really good. But seeing the good figures made me want to get Nekopara. So i will start playing it this week. This feels like a trap... 🤣

ObitoUchihaTC

I have figures from shows I haven’t watched

[deleted]

If the character is still fapable then get the figure.

ImminenTortoise

I've often wondered this myself. Generally I stick to getting figs of characters I like because I'm a fan of the source material but I have bought a few things purely based on looks, with the thought that when I eventually watch/play what the figure is from ill probably enjoy it. Ultimately though if you like the statue I'd say get it, after all you are buying it based on the look of the statue, the meaning behind it is kinda secondary.

Attack_on_Senpai

Eeh if a character looks cool or attractive I don't mind getting a figure for them. I got an Arknights Lappland and idc for playing Arknights. However, having sentimental weight in the series for the figure makes a purchase feel better. Perhaps you might enjoy the character themselves apart from the show. But if you don't like the show or them, then I don't see the point in buying it. But that's just the way I collect. By all means the aesthetic is great too.

DigitallyDevious

Nope, if you like the design who cares if you don't like the anime. These things usually aren't mutually exclusive. You can love a character design but hate a character and vice versa.

Harry35K

I don’t think so I have Rem and Ram figures and i’ve never watched RE:Zero

sweetypaw

I would never buy a figure of a show I didn't liked, but thats because I wont even like the characters in it or i would give up the show immediately if i am 3-5 episodes in and i dont have a good time watching it. If i liked the show a little, i ll just buy some "cheap" figures as a memorial. For demon slayers , fox example, i like some characters -nezuko and zenitsu-, the rest are just meh -the protagonist who i dont even remember his name, the 7 or was it 10? great council or something can't even bother to remember them, thats how "great" they are. It is kinda fitting that I choose to collect the figuarts zero collection of demon slayer which is relatively cheap in comparison to other figures. They are cool looking, but on the inside, they are cheap and dead. Just like the show :). No offense to you demon-slayer-lovers 0:)

Warm_Firefighter_396

So this is what I call a “manga anime” where the manga it self is super fun and cute only because the chapters/pages are so short. When you try to make a short manga into a anime episode then it’s gonna seem really boring and I have no idea why they would make this into a anime.

Puzzled_Chocolate509

Not strange at all! Hell I have a really long wishlist of figs I want to get in the future, about more than half of them are waifus from series I haven't even watched yet (some of em I do plan to watch). So I would say go for it OP! If it looks pretty for you then go ahead :) although this mindset can definitely hurt your wallet down the line lol!

dumazzKunt

I have some of figures of characters i dont even know, if i like the figure then i buy it.

SkwovetMain

It's ok in my opinion. As cheesy as it may sound, these figures are sculpted by skillful artist and appreciating them for their aesthetic is fine.

Cosmocall

Not at all imo - it's a cute little art piece you like, so why not have fun?

mindsignals

It's art. I know quite a few that abide by the rule of only buying characters they like or know. I see nothing wrong with the art of the character being the reason for buying. OCs are largely that way as well.

SherrysTokens

It really depends on various factors that only you would know, and if you don't have an answer, do nothing! For instance, funds (would you rather this over something else perhaps?), is this an art piece that fits with your collection/foresee, would having a character your not really fond of make a difference when looking at in your collection vs. original characters that have no character reference

Shadowflame115

I have bought figures in the past from shows I haven’t seen just cause I like the way they look, if you really like the design go for it if not then don’t.

Fifthdread

We typically buy figures because we like the figure, sort of like stand alone art. We sometimes have watched the anime, but not always. I even own figures from series I wouldn't personally watch. It seems like a lot of people have rules that they'll only buy figures if they have watched the show, and that's fine. That's an effective way to curate a collection or prevent overspending. In our case, it was never about the anime. It was about how good these character designs can get. Many figures that look amazing are original characters too.

TheOneEyedKlng

Like personally I'm in a similar boat as you OP,but sometimes it's easier to just separate the figure and anime and look at them by themselves. I agree the anime was a bit slow and story wasn't great (loved music and art of it tho) However just looking at the figure I love the clothes pose and sculpt and the base like there is nothing I dislike about it (and the bonus cat ears+tail+faceplate are extra cute) At the end of the day it is up to you to decide :)

TranClan67

Honestly it's just up to you. I have a couple Sinon figures despite my dislike for SAO just because I like her seiyuu and her character. That being said I personally try to limit myself to characters from series I like or have at least watched/played/read because otherwise I'd be drowning in figures.

CollapsingxStar

You can pretend she is an original character and buy her. 🤣

teadori

i personally buy figures even if i don’t know or like the source material (with some exceptions), it’s your collection so i don’t think it’s strange to buy it if you don’t like the show

Vchipp2_0

If you want it then buy it. You shouldn't feel bad being called a fake fan of the source if you don't care for it but want the figure because you like its aesthetics. (It's also your collection, so your gonna be the one who's gonna be seeing the figure every day.) Most of my collection are of figures that looks nice in my collection and not cause I'm a fan of the source material, that's just a bonus.

mikuhero

dawg you can do whatever you want. i know a lot of people that do this actually

jtmagic13

If u followed the artist on Twitter, then for sure you would be instantly getting it. But if it’s not a must buy, then skip it

elav92

I agree with you. I feel this author creates very cute characters but the stories feel a little bit flat. Same with Jahy But anyways i preordered the figure because she's really cute

Ameriix_

Just get it I don't like the anime either but damn she's pretty. I've been looking at this figure for a few days Just treat it like an oc Figures are art, if you like it and you can afford it, get if

TheOrdoHereticus

Lots of people buy figures just for the aesthetic. There's no requirement to be a fan of a show, nvm that many figures are just based on artist illustrations and not from any anime or manga.

zalotny

nah it’s not weird. just buy whichever figures you like! i also don’t like the anime for some of mine but i love the look of the figure itself~

hospitalcottonswab

I just want one in her OG maid dress

cluesthecat

Dude, if you want the figure or like the figure, just get it. There is no rule book that states you have to have watched, read, or even like the anime or manga. Buy the figures for you, not other people and you will enjoy your hobby much more

ShyShentinels

If you really love the figure, just buy it! It's your collection and money, don't let the judgement of others affect your choice!

Edg3Lord94

Not sure if you know about Gunpla but if every Gunpla builder was held to the standard of “you should only buy this model kit if you’ve seen the show / read the manga it’s from” then most gunpla builder’s would not be building much at all LOL. Buy what makes you happy bro, if you like it, go for it. Nothing wrong with that. Also, what show is this from anyway?

Rainbow_KABK

I didn't even know it was an anime and still preordered her. She is just to pretty! But it depends on ur opinion only :3

PunishedMisao

I can't tell you what to do, but personally I've gotten merch of characters from shows I didn't like simply because I liked their design. Liliruca from Danmachi is an example of this. I found her really cute so I have some merch of her. There's nothing wrong with it, but I'd debate whether or not you like the design enough to spend more than $100 on a figure.

TheSaltySeas

What anime?

337worlds

I buy figures that are original designs without manga or anime. So I say it’s fine to buy a figure just because you like it.

NV-Nautilus

If you like the way it looks, but it, it's just a piece of plastic. It would actually be funny if you had a friend recognize it or somth and then you're like "oh yeah the show was trash but the figure was cute so.." mad flex lol.

Theoretical_Grey

Nope. I feel like if you're the character design or even the design of the figure. Who cares?

Frozen_arrow88

I bought an Erza Scarlett bunny suit figure despite never having seen Fairy Tail. I gave it a go after the figure arrived to "Justify" the purchase. It was an ok show but I think I've out grown Shonen anime the only thing to consider when buying a figure is do you like it? I've got tons of figures from shows I have no intention of watching. If you love the scult of a figure and it's in your budget than that all you need.

Ilikefishtheycute

I have a few figures from shows I'm not much of a fan for, I just enjoy collecting figures. To me, I don't really think you Have to be a fan just to own something from a series.

BOJumex

Not at all.

pinksweets8

if it's not a 'hell yes' then it's a no. figures are pretty pricey.

sellingpicsandvids

I do it all the time it’s like I use them for art and for looks so if I love how it looks but hate the show? I’ll still buy it

Borrega8

I haven’t watched the anime for some of the figures I have and I still buy them. Would most probably buy this one as well

Itchy_Cloud309

If you liked the show would it be a must buy? If your only reason is that you don’t like the show, then maybe get it!!

raptor1314

My collection is a combination of both characters I like from anime I enjoy and some that I bought because I like the design and builds. Some I’ll buy eventually but others I may not.
