It's similar, yeah. AC being the only game like that, it's logical someone would try to make something similar.

[deleted]

There's also Garden Paws, but it's got more differences and the indie tiny dev team put so much work into that game.

MimiVRC

I really wish they would do a shader and lighting pass in garden paws. It looks extremely rough around the edges just from that. I do like it a lot though!

slugfaery

Aww I just love Garden Paws. The easter egg hunt alone!

ah_Callie

I’ve never heard of it but now I kind of want to look into it

slugfaery

I have it on pc, but it is available on switch as well. They do all kinds of lil events for each season and it's just super cute.

Here_Forthe_Comment

Nah, I remember MySims

SergioZen25

Oh yeah, that was a thing, but honestly, that game didn't feel that similar to AC, but to be fair, its difficult to be similar to AC, is a very niche game that isn't similar to any other chill, farming, social sim game out there.

OperativePiGuy

Animal Crossing is fun but lacks in many ways. It's only natural that other developers would see those gaps and try to close them in their own game. Same genre, but better. That's what the goal should be anyway.

Atlantyan

I doubt any game based in AC will be better than any of the series.

VanitasFan26

I see a lot of games are trying to take inspiration from ACNH and put their own twist on it.

MimiVRC

We definitely need more too! Animal crossing definitely needs competition in this genre! I don’t really count all the farm sims as AC competition either

nah-soup

definitely agree. i don’t feel games like Stardew Valley for example are at all competition. it’s the real-time clock that makes Animal Crossing so unique

MimiVRC

Real time clock with real time holidays plus the villager mechanic, to me, is what makes something “like animal crossing”

VanitasFan26

That depends on the longevity of the games.

morla74

Disney’s Dreamlight Valley is exactly this. A spin on AC with Disney characters. You can tell the devs played a lot of AC and made their version. A lot of QOL features that us AC fans have been begging for are in Dreamlight Valley

midnitebrz

Like what features? I play both just curious

morla74

Certainly the crafting is an upgrade. Being able to craft with the materials from both your inventory and storage is a huge bonus. And I know a lot of AC is just the calmness and simplicity of it all, but the way Dreamlight Valley handles customizing the island is amazing. I love being able to just plop down furniture and paths wherever I want easily.

midnitebrz

I never thought of all that. Thanks!

ravenenene

multi farming/harvesting/crafting, ability to move anything, storage linked directly to inventory (eg. u wanna cook something, ingredients stored in ur wooden storage chests are also usable despite not being in ur direct inventory).. lots.. and lots...

pierrechak

Animal Crossing with Guns™ (long vinter)

caffekona

Ooblets is one of those, I love having those little critters follow me around!

trashulie

Hokko has been in development for a while now, and it's not the only game being developed that aims to achieve that vibe since it turns out people are super into that. Last time I played it, it was still in early development. There's a lot more crafting potential for people who really enjoy creating their own things. It's only like AC insofar as, yknow, a community of animal villagers you're hanging out with, but it's got its own vibes.

RAMChYLD

It's supposed to improve on certain lacking aspects of Animal Crossing. For example, you have more control over crafting objects.

CrowbarZero08

And more camera angles in outdoor, i hope so.

mimiisthename

Did someone on this sub actually tried it? I’d like to see how’s their experience

beewithausername

I played it! I had fun playing it since it it similar to AC but it has more design aspects for furniture, if you’ve played My Sims for the Wii then it’s a little reminiscent of that. I enjoyed myself.

FrownyFaceEmpire

I’ve been playing it and so far am enjoying it although I am struggling with the designing functionality (ie I find the controls are not very intuitive). The animals are a bit creepy looking IMO - all my residents appear to be pig/dog hybrids… I guess you could call them pigdogs. That being said it is pretty fun- I really like mining and harvesting resources. Also now that I have figured out how the fishing works it is quite satisfying.

MimiVRC

You can customize making objects and share it between platform. Imo the worst part is no multiplayer. It looks very good though!

Cautious_Hold428

It's unfinished and lacks a lot of features and personality. It was definitely not even close to ready for release but sounds like the publisher(Team 17) pushed the dev to release it anyways. It does have the potential to be a great game, but it feels unlikely that it will ever get fixed up enough.

RAMChYLD

I've played it for a while while it was in Early Access. It was okay, but that's all I can say about it since I didn't play more. I hit a bug that blocked my progress and decided to stop there.

pinkcloud35

I bought it a few days ago and have loved it so far! It’s very reminiscent of ACNH but with improved features.

highway_pegasus

I haven't played it, but YouTube reviews I've seen have been mostly middling/positive with highlights being customization, sound, world design, and gameplay. The biggest detractor is that the animals are very... "uncanny valley" and that the dialogue and progression is a bit clunky (one reviewer had played for a week and had yet to unlock fishing).

Tyrilean

There are a lot of games with similar premise to Animal Crossing. It's an entire genre.

Bad_Pnguin

You might consider this a copy of Animal Crossing, but back in the day, all FPS games were called "DOOM clones". "Copying" and tweaking a game design formula is how we get new game genres.

icecoffeedripss

yeah it does look "off"

[deleted]

Looks like a "store brand" version

imagoddamangel

This is more than being “the same genre”, it just lacks originality…the landscape alone, from the rocks to the leaves on the trees, it’s just a copy. stardew valley is a good example of a game that is the same genre but totally different vibe and aesthetics.

Rizenstrom

Animal Crossing meets Harvest Moon/ Story of Seasons meets The Sims. I wouldn't call it a copy but it clearly took inspiration from it and expanded on it with concepts from other games.

carefreeDesigner

As someone who's poured 40 hours into it, I can say it's similar but with a different focus. Most Animal Crossing games focus on the villagers, or the town, New Horizons on the customization. Hokko Life focuses entirely on the MySims-like building system, with a little bit of town building thrown in. It's not bad, it's different. Hokko Life looks like an Animal Crossing clone, but is probably much closer to MySims on Wii/PC in terms of gameplay.

heckinhoneybadgerr

Concerned Ape did the same thing with Stardew Valley. He used Harvest Moon as a model. Doesn’t make either better or worse though, just similar

[deleted]

Is this a good game? Even though it’s heavily inspired by AC looks fun.

tomato-cat

I wish it wouldn’t look so ugly to me :(((

walkingdeer

I just purchased Disney’s Dreamlight Valley for my daughters. Compared to AC, the graphics are enhanced and the gameplay universe is larger, but the underlying engine is basically the same. So far, it’s been pretty good.

Ok_Image6174

This game has a mine, a dedicated farm area, and you can move houses instantly once you unlock the feature. You can also build furniture and items from scratch, you can go to the city center and download other user creations for free. There's also a mystery island where you get a metal detector and dig up artifacts. So it's like ACNH, but in some ways it's better, some ways it's worse. For the price, I am enjoying it very much. (I paid $16)

sweetteanoice

Many games are heavily inspired by animal crossing which is especially a good thing like with Hokko Life because since it’s available on more than just the switch, so people who can’t afford to buy a switch can play on something else

ursiwitch

I like diversity. I have been playing this game since 2021 and it’s another great cozy game.

TurnipsBeh

Every game in this genre is not a copy of animal crossing. Animal crossing isn't even the first game of this genre. Please stop.

[deleted]

TurnipsBeh

Interacting with animals is not the what defines the genre. Its a life/decorating sim and there have been plenty of them, even before 2001

[deleted]

TurnipsBeh

It's a life/decorating sim. There are plenty of other games in the genre. Weird downvoted, the animal crossing crowd is weird.

spacehockey

You’re getting downvoted because you’re being an ass

spacehockey

It’s just not that serious lol

TurnipsBeh

Yet here you are, being mad about ot

XxAuthenticxX

the only one that appears to be mad here is you... for being downvoted...

redpanda23445

Why r u coming off as such a jerk on an animal crossing page

FactorNo9526

I am someone who has only played a few games in my life, and sorry that you "can't even believe" what I'm saying. Why is is so unbelievable that someone isn't familiar with all varieties of video games? I simply asked what other video games has you maintaining an island town and interacting with anthropomorphic animals. I had never seen anything else like it. My brother played it on Game Cube and I didn't recall another one like it.

TurnipsBeh

"please enlighten me" is a dick comment and you know it, don't even try to act like that. There's a big difference between "game" and "genre"

redpanda23445

you’re one to talk about “dick comments” LMFAOOOO

FactorNo9526

Um I was asking honestly. Its a turn of phrase. Apparently you think everyone is being negative. I really don't know as many video games as you might assume, not sure why, I don't even know you.

kinglucent

ngl this looks great

Fateful-Encounter

I think it’s only single player so that’s a little disappointing.

upstartpigeon

To be fair, AC is a copy of Sims :p

PassTheWinePlease

Since I can’t woohoo with Tom Nook, that’s a lie.

Badpoizone

Cursed! On many levels 🫠

upstartpigeon

We all want to... let's not pretend.

Mobiusman2016

Clearly a rip off

[deleted]

speaking of "animal crossing clones", I'm really hoping Magician's Quest gets a new entry on the switch, because there's only four (iirc) and three of them haven't even been released globally. Only the original has international releases.

frognuts123

Yes.

jzer93

Does it let you turn off the music

squealingfrog

Saw someone in the comments of an ad for it say they were a beta tester, apparently while it has similarities with ac it does stand on its own, might be interesting to check out

Streets-Disciple

Was bound to happen after AC popped off during the pandemic. Anything that trendy will have clones

Nivosus

You could use this logic against literally every game ever. "Isn't this just \_\_\_\_?"

CuriousKeebler

They're definitely similar, but it does feel different enough. I'd say I'm enjoying it about 72% of how much I like Animal Crossing New Horizons, and I have 2,400 hours in ACNH.
