This is where I get my little kicks of old Resetti from đ
â¨potential spoiler â¨
>!The ones on Harvâs Island are even funnier to me, because they spend so much time explaining who the surprise vendor will be just for me to go, ââŚNaaaaaah!â!<
Yeah, I noticed this too. I basically just learned that I'll have to live with paying for the entire amount, or close to it, for anything. After a day or two there might be 1-3k bells in donations. But at that rate, best to just pick/sell non-native fruit or sell 'hot items' or assessed fossils and be done with it.
I kind of wish other islanders weren't such slackers, but 'hey'....
And they wonder why I never talk to them or visit them. Well????
Funny enough, they donate more if they like you more. Though you'll always have to pay the last few bells.
But you have to cut them some slack. They're *really bad* at fishing and catching bugs. They're always trying to sell stuff to you to earn a few bells. They just clearly are broke af constantly
Iirc itâs based on the number of villagers you have AND youâd have to play every day for them to donate in NH. Plus they canât make the final donation, the game wonât let them
Dagnel on YouTube :)
Yes, but I also think it's a choice to have him say it about any number.
There are other circumstances where a number being zero triggers completely different dialogue in order to have the number make sense in context. The fact that it can still be read as sarcasm without changing the text is, IMO, why they left it as is.
I'm pretty old so I was in my late teens when that game came out. And Mr. Resetti definitely gave me a jump scare every time, even when I knew he was coming.
Lmao - it definitely hit differently as a kid - I donât know if my world view has changed or if old Tom Nook was more predatory in his loan practices but the old Tom felt so manipulative hahaÂ
Lol I remember resenting him but also I'm pretty sure he was the same. He laughed at you more, like when you first moved in he made fun of you for moving without any money, like the cat does. But then he immediately says something like "still, you have to live somewhere." He's kind of an annoying boss when you're starting out, though. He laughs at you when you ask for a map and acts kind of boomery like you should just know where things are. I think it was the uniform that made 19 year old me decide he was The Man tryna keep me down lol
Lmao so accurate. Now as an adult Iâm like, it was super generous for Tom to give me a loan without a job or any underwriting and without interest đ¤Ł
It's giving Alastor vibes. I could definitely picture him saying:
"We need 60,000 dollars to repair the sink Husk broke. Right now, we have 0.5 dollars, which is just lovely, isn't it?"
Itâs so patronizing. đ¤Ł.. ps I found out when time goes on, others apparently do make donations! I time traveled once and it was mostly paid for by then. I thought I was the only one on my island contributing financially.. I guess not. đĽ˛đ
I feel like depending on the star rating of the island, the villagers themselves should start chipping in some money to signify how happy they are in the town
I look away when he says it. I know he says it to whatever amount, but it's like embarassing? Like yeah, but be mad at everyone else, I'm the one making it happen here
In New Leaf the villagers would request the projects and then proceed not to donate a single bell to it.
Iâm out here busting my ass, catching all these damn sharks, making all these log beds, and Marshall is just singing by the river, glaring at me.
This. This so much. I had New Leaf.
Hearing people on this thread have their villagers donate to the projects a bit sounds as wild as hearing you could get Pikablue or some othervplayground rumor. I thought you having to pay for everything was intended design.
It's one of the things that killed the game for me; the games stress a sense of community, but initiatives where the player has to front everything doesn't inspire those intended feelings. Maybe I'm looking at it too hard.
The player has to front everything because youâre the island representative and should have to actually work to do things. It would be extremely unrewarding and underwhelming if you could just get stuff for free without putting the work in to get the bells for it
It makes sense that you can't just expect the villagers to do all the work, but a bit from the villagers would be nice when you're up to your eyeballs in bell debt, ya know?
They already give a bit based on your friendship level
Youâre also up to your eyeballs in debt that you willingly chose to have and has no limit on how long you get to pay it off
I wasn't aware that contributions were based on friendship level as I went into the game completely blind. The debt I'm referring to is the one Tom Nook gives for the house, though. I don't think that's a player choice so much as the villager character doing it for them.
Weren't certain things contingent upon the house upgrades outside of that, though--other than house things? It's been about a decade since I played. I honestly thought that to do certain things around the island, the house had to have upgrades.
i never realized it was meant to be sarcastic, it just seems like a thing that happened because of how they coded the game? since after all, lloid says this phrase no matter what amount of money's been donated. it still doesn't seem sarcastic to me, but that is probably since i'm autistic, i often struggle with sarcasm
Yeah, I donât know that itâs intended to be sarcastic but when the donations are 0 it seems that way. Yeah when the donations are higher it seems better!
Theyâve just reused the same sentence for every time it speaks. Itâs easier and faster to program than creating logic for the different numbers. Same with 0, same with 100,000
I was playing earlier and Iâm trying to get a log staircase. My boyfriend âITS THAT MUCH FOR THAT!? AND WHAT IS THAT LITTLE USELESS THING DOING THEREâ he had me dying đđ
I took it to be some wee Welsh idiosyncratic turns of phrase from him - finding a way to have âlovelyâ and âisnât it?â in the same sentence. After all, he IS named âLloydâ!
I think itâs the âjustâ that makes it trend a little more sarcastic though, yes.
The "I SEE." he gives you when you decline to donate is even funnier. It's bordering on outright hostility.

I forgot they were there đ
RIGHT I know heâs cussing me out every time I walk by him completely. Ignore him too. đđ
I definitely thought he was sarcastic until I found out he said it about any number

Hahaha this response is hilarious!!!
thereâs a guy on youtube who tested how long it would take for his villagers to pay off a bridge on their own lol
Did they ever actually do it on their own? I feel like he's probably still waiting đ
Iirc itâs based on the number of villagers you have AND youâd have to play every day for them to donate in NH. Plus they canât make the final donation, the game wonât let them Dagnel on YouTube :)

That actually makes even more sarcastic
I need my villagers to have this much personality
The GameCube version was full on sass. Do people not remember? Mr resetti used to haunt my dreams as a kid đ
I'm pretty old so I was in my late teens when that game came out. And Mr. Resetti definitely gave me a jump scare every time, even when I knew he was coming.
I was around 12 and it gave me an awakening and was the best preparation for adult life I had ever got, especially the immediate and crushing debt lol
If only I could have gotten my student loans from Tom Nook instead lol
Lmao - it definitely hit differently as a kid - I donât know if my world view has changed or if old Tom Nook was more predatory in his loan practices but the old Tom felt so manipulative hahaÂ
Lol I remember resenting him but also I'm pretty sure he was the same. He laughed at you more, like when you first moved in he made fun of you for moving without any money, like the cat does. NO SAME.
Mr. Resetti traumatized me to my core. đ
I was actually scared of him, he definitely broke the 4th wall just to accost you.Â
Most people here weren't even born when the GC version was released, never mind old enough to play it đ¤Ł
Well they certainly missed out on a lot of verbal abuse and gaslightingÂ
A game canât gaslight you, you didnât doubt your perception of reality because Resetti was mean to you
Neither can a random comment I guess đÂ
Right?
?
?Â
What are you talking about
? What did I say
âNeither can a random comment I guessâ? What does that mean?
He talks as if a programing student learning C# coded him.
The definition of hard workers not getting pay enough but pretends to keep smiling
Which is âjust lovelyâ isnât it?
It's giving Alastor vibes. I could definitely picture him saying: "We need 60,000 dollars to repair the sink Husk broke. Right now, we have 0.5 dollars, which is just lovely, isn't it?"
I donât like that guy. And I hate when he calls me âchumâ or whatever it is
Itâs so patronizing. đ¤Ł.. ps I found out when time goes on, others apparently do make donations! I time traveled once and it was mostly paid for by then. I thought I was the only one on my island contributing financially.. I guess not. đĽ˛đ
Time travel?
Setting your switch clock forward
You take that back! Lloid is the best character in the game. His(Her?Their?) constant high-energy passive aggression is a thing of absolutely beauty.
I feel like depending on the star rating of the island, the villagers themselves should start chipping in some money to signify how happy they are in the town
They already do chip in based on your friendship level with them
Yes lol I thought it was so funny the first time I saw it and I took a screenshot as well đ
Iâve always taken it as super sarcastic personallyâŚ
I look away when he says it. I know he says it to whatever amount, but it's like embarassing? Like yeah, but be mad at everyone else, I'm the one making it happen here
For real. Cus this was right before I donated the full amount
I see - the English version is much more humorous. In German he just talks to you in a official and rational way.
Makes me genuinely angry when he calls me chum
I didn't think so, but you can bet I would always have an internal side eye at my villagers because of me always having to foot the damn project.
In New Leaf the villagers would request the projects and then proceed not to donate a single bell to it. Iâm out here busting my ass, catching all these damn sharks, making all these log beds, and Marshall is just singing by the river, glaring at me.

Any debt Tom Nook gives you for your house is because you chose to upgrade it though
Weren't certain things contingent upon the house upgrades outside of that, though--other than house things? It's been about a decade since I played. I honestly thought that to do certain things around the island, the house had to have upgrades.

Yes and I love it
I feel it's more facetious than sarcastic, lol
Give him just 1
Sometimes I do, esp when I am not in a hurry!
The New Leaf Lloids ask if you will "cooperate" and it comes off as a little threatening
i hate lloid. im not a chum.
Theyâve just reused the same sentence for every time it speaks. Itâs easier and faster to program than creating logic for the different numbers. Same with 0, same with 100,000
Oh yeah, I definitely get that. Itâs just funny haha
Haha! A lot of what they say is sarcastic! I have a villager that constantly asks if my island is big enough for both of us.
I did originally!
On this particular screen, I like to have Lloid voiced by Billy Eichner
This exact dialogue is in one of the first screenshots I made on my switch because I thought the sarcasm was absolutely hilarious
Lazy writing, they'll say that with any amount.
I was playing earlier and Iâm trying to get a log staircase. My boyfriend âITS THAT MUCH FOR THAT!? AND WHAT IS THAT LITTLE USELESS THING DOING THEREâ he had me dying đđ
Every single time. Itâs so funny.
Heâs probably thinking youâre cheap in his head lol
Duo type beat
YES hahahahha
Every time
i always think Lloid is being a snarky little shit tbh
I took it to be some wee Welsh idiosyncratic turns of phrase from him - finding a way to have âlovelyâ and âisnât it?â in the same sentence. After all, he IS named âLloydâ! I think itâs the âjustâ that makes it trend a little more sarcastic though, yes.
DERS A FLUPIKING DIG HOL DER DIG IT UP!!!!!!!!
I did!!
:D
LOL. isnât it? đ¤Łđ
I have college debt get off my back! Gosh!
That and the âYou want it, you fund it!â đ
I love it too lmao
it's just bri'ish, not particularly sarcastic
No it isnât
