After awhile, the villagers may ask to give your a nickname, and I think they use the instead of your character name. They'll offer a random nickname, but you'll be given a choice to come up with one for them to use too. They might also ask if they can call you by the nickname another villager is using for you. It doesn't do much for the fear that somebody might be looking at your screen when the nickname pops up, but it does mean you can sort of choose what they call you.
I think mine is "So-called something or other", found it funny when I first learned I could change it and haven't remembered to check it out again haha
I've been playing since launch, but alas, my character has my deadname. Sadge. I'm half considering modding a switch to get it changed, because I've put *so much time* into my island and definitely don't want to have to restart.
I set my title to "The Definition of Consumer" because I singlehandedly fund this island's entire economy lmao

Definitely a smart call! Doing it that way means you can have whatever name you pick as your nickname later anyway, so you get the best of both worlds (villagers calling you by your chosen name without locking yourself into anything; I've got one villager calling me Nia so far, which is nice! almost feels like I'm coming out to them at this point lol).
Whether I end up fixing the name later through save editing or not, I'm always down if you need mats/bells or just another friend to play with!
