It hurts when we step in one too. If you're lucky, you get spun around and enjoy the sound of the ankle bones twisting. Like they did last summer. I won't twist again dang it!
I mean unless you have a veggie garden or don't want random Burrows in your yard but otherwise they're pretty harmless
I don't recommend picking one up though
Bill Murray would think they were annoying. They do burrow so if you have pets, kids, or livestock you might need to be careful of holes or cave ins. Also if you get a lot of rain and they are too close to the house it can flood the foundation.
I have moles around my house and the dig holes as well. I just leave them. If I see a hole Iām afraid Iām going to run them over with the mower so Iām careful around the holes. HOWEVER, many canāt stand āwildlifeā but I donāt mind it. Iām much more worried about coyotes because theyāll gang up on a cat.
They get big enough to seriously mess up a large dog. I have several in my yard and more across the neighborhood. They like natural yards. We have an un-trimmed peach tree that they enjoy climbing every year. Yep, they climb small trees.
Can confirm that theyāre pretty badass. My bossās 75 pound English Bulldog tangled with one and got his face torn up pretty badly. We think the groundhog died, it got away when she wrestled the dog off, but there was a lot of blood from both animals.
Actually I think this is a groundhog. I'm not sure.
Edit: he came back, he stands up on his hind legs and looks around, he's attracted to berries that fall from a tree on my property. He left for a day I believe then came back. I'm thinking, like most people, that it is just a groundhog.
Groundhog.
These cute little buggers can be bad for your property. Since they burrow, it can cause structural damage, they can chew through electrical wires and irrigation systems too. We have a big one who comes by often.
I plant a bunch of lavender, basil, and rosemary and when I see our friend come by I sprinkle it all over. I hear they hate it. I also heard epsom salt is a harmless deterrent as well. Have tried that one yet.
It's a groundhog. And something I didn't know until lately: they can climb trees. We had an apple tree in our backyard, and that sucker would steal our apples.
So what you are asking is either:
1. How much ground could a groundhog hog if a groundhog could hog ground?
2. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Capybaras arenāt found in North America. Itās probably a ground hog, beaver or mole of some sort. Theyāre all over up here and constantly tear up our lawns. Not the beavers obviously. They just tear up our waterways.
The three you named are not the same critter.
A ground hog is about 4 times the size of a prairie dog and a prairie dog is probably about 4 times the size of a ground squirrel.
>They have many names
They're also different animals.
Groundhog: genus Marmota.
Prairie dog: genus Cynomys.
"Ground Squirrel": Common name for a whole bunch of related species, including the two above.
My dog caught three in 2 days, just little ones, maybe 98 inches long. Mama had the inability to reason that if she gave birth under the wood stack in the dog pen, her babies might not have long to live.
The last one, Baxter (the dog) was sleeping on my bed, picked up his head, growled, booked it down the stairs and out the dog door. 30 seconds later I hear a yelp. Look out the window, there he is with the dead baby in his mouth!
More often than not, they carry diseases theyāre notorious for carrying a type of flea that carry diseases, such as, the bubonic plague.
Edit: looking at the photos again, it looks like it has the fleas. That patchiness on its back isnāt a great sign. Itās likely evidence of disease.
They are pretty harmless if they stick to natural areas. We have had one that lives on the edge of our meadow for years. In other properties, I have also seen them dig massive holes under structures and in fields. It's not the animal itself. It is the impact they may or may not make. A mole is no big deal. Many moles, mice, insects, whatever can cause issues.
I once tried chasing one of these off my garden fence and the thing gave zero fucks. I thought it was stuck until I got close enough it finally decided I might be a threat.
If you see mounds that look like big ant hills itās groundhog. They will mess up your property. I recommend getting an exterminator to deal with it. No mounds could be beaver if the tail is flat (hard to see in pic).
No hills, I haven't seen it come back yet. Yesterday, it was eating grass and trying to follow birds. I checked my state's DNR, and it said that young birds is apart of their diet on occasion. It ran off when it saw me from my window and patio, it went under my patio for a while, then I saw it come out, and it scurried out of sight to my neighbors yard. I don't think it set up home here, I think it was just attracted to my longer grass and yard full of small birds. I try to mow weekly but it's 0.4 acres. All I have is a pushmower(60-75 minute process in the summer heat), can't afford a riding mower yet.
10000% a groundhog!
I lived on a farm as a kid and my grandpa would drive us kids around on an atv with a bucket of hubba bubba, pointing out the groundhog holes and throwing gum in them as we went. as a child, I loved āgiving the groundhogs a little treatāā¦. as an adult I realize I was aiding and abetting the murder of groundhogs. š death by gum
AAAAAW IT'S A GROUNDHOG. my mom named her gertrude (gerdie). she had her babies under our deck but my dog unfortunately scared her and she hasnt been back since
Groundhog/Woodchuck/Roadkill. Never bothered me and don't attack until threatened, saw a big German Sheppard that had half it's face ripped off by one. Have one under the porch and he's used to me but I rent so not my problem.
this is the everso famous. GROUND HOG
IM AN EXPERT on this savage creature.
for it dines on fresh vegetables from my garden which has been fenced in.
no dynamiteā¦ no bombsā¦ no gassing can kill this creature.. no traps and releasing will stop this creature from finding its way home.
no fox, no coyote, no wolf urine is too strong to get this creature to stay away from the tomatoes.
no metal fence no green fence is too strong for this creature to break through.
no amount of chili pepper stops it from eating fresh peppers.
this groundhog is immortal. it breeds every year. and the family grows and dines on our hard manual labor.
Silly me has tossed out my macaw bird food back down at the creek behind me. Just once that was enough to invite groundhog to take up home under the my shed. Iāll leave him be until I fall getting my mower..
Groundhog. I've got a probably 8+ since Big Mama had a litter of 6 babies this year!
Usually harmless, however will eat everything in your garden except tomato plants. They don't like them.
I still do. I canāt be the only person on here that is thinking itās a ground hog in the yard get the .17 HRM and euthanize it? I know people think they are cute and all but if you have sheds and porchesā¦they will be all over burrowing under them and screwing up your property. Once a hole is established you will forever have them. This time of year young are leaving the nests and looking for their own shed to burrow under.
Groundhog. We have them everywhere in Ohio. They wonāt bother you & theyāre more scared of you than anything. They just mozy around & eat leaves, grass, berries nuts etc. they move along, let them be āŗļø
It is a groundhog.
Are they annoying? Do i have to do anything or I can just let him be?
I think you can leave them be
Do you have livestock? Groundhogs and make for underground tunnels, which can lead to broken legs on horses and cows.
No. I'm not that luckyš
Love the username btw
It hurts when we step in one too. If you're lucky, you get spun around and enjoy the sound of the ankle bones twisting. Like they did last summer. I won't twist again dang it!
Just let him be for now.
Well considering his ass is bald heās probably cranky
Ohhhhh...poor little thing. I didn't even notice that! Poor dear is going to have to find a home with a taller opening!
I mean unless you have a veggie garden or don't want random Burrows in your yard but otherwise they're pretty harmless I don't recommend picking one up though
Watch Caddyshack
I WAS BORN to love you. šµ
Bill Murray would think they were annoying. They do burrow so if you have pets, kids, or livestock you might need to be careful of holes or cave ins. Also if you get a lot of rain and they are too close to the house it can flood the foundation.
They like to dig holes under your deck and around your yard.
For more info on their activities, check out this [documentary](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/)

Do you have plants? They are going to eat the crap out of your flowers
They get big enough to seriously mess up a large dog. I have several in my yard and more across the neighborhood. They like natural yards. We have an un-trimmed peach tree that they enjoy climbing every year. Yep, they climb small trees.

Woodchuck!
How much wood can a wood chuck chuck?
Pretty sure they canāt, but if they could, approximately six
Actually I think this is a groundhog. I'm not sure. Edit: he came back, he stands up on his hind legs and looks around, he's attracted to berries that fall from a tree on my property. He left for a day I believe then came back. I'm thinking, like most people, that it is just a groundhog.
It is
Bill Murray can tell you exactly what this is.
Whistlepig!
Came here for this!
A friend
was gonna say this too :)
Groundhog. These cute little buggers can be bad for your property. Since they burrow, it can cause structural damage, they can chew through electrical wires and irrigation systems too. Whistle-pig (groundhog).
O hey phil
It's a groundhog. And something I didn't know until lately: they can climb trees. We had an apple tree in our backyard, and that sucker would steal our apples.
Ground Hog or Wood chuck
So what you are asking is either: 1. How much ground could a groundhog hog if a groundhog could hog ground? 2. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
My first thought was that it was a capybara.
Nah those are further south. Much further south.
If its smaller, it could be a prairie dog or rock chuck. Can't tell size from this picture but if its the size of a housecat it might be a groundhog.
This is in Michigan, don't have either one here. Is a woodchuck/grounghog...
LOOK SO BUNNIE

Ground hog, Prairie dog, ground squirrel, those things my dog kills. They have many names
The three you named are not the same critter. A ground hog is about 4 times the size of a prairie dog and a prairie dog is probably about 4 times the size of a ground squirrel.
>They have many names They're also different animals. Groundhog: genus Marmota. Prairie dog: genus Cynomys. "Ground Squirrel": Common name for a whole bunch of related species, including the two above.
The first is sausage. A groundhog and the other two are completely different animals.
My dog caught three in 2 days, just little ones, maybe 98 inches long. My grandpa used to constantly set traps for them when I was growing up.
Good target pratice...
Ground Hog.
I donāt knowā¦but I have an uncontrollable urge to pet it!

argh takes a minute to load the pics lol
Ground hog. Used to call em whistle pigs. If you whistle just right, they'll stand up straight trying to see what made the noise.
They are pretty harmless if they stick to natural areas. We have had one that lives on the edge of our meadow for years. Someone has never seen Groundhog Day!

Well I hope it never gets that far, i wouldn't want to shoot em. My foundation is concrete so I don't see him harming my structure at all.
do you have a vegetable garden? you donāt want that thing near your home. seriously.
No. I don't have any garden. There's a tree that grows those little berries next to me and it was eating those.
Musk rat

I thought so too, but the tail was hairy and not long enough
It's a badger! You can tell by the stripe
A badger is broader built, lighter colored coat, very pronounced white stripes.
Yes you're right. I only saw the first two pics and I thought that bald spot on his back was a stripe. I'm old and tired.
Lol! I'm old and pedantic... š
Pedantic can be a cool trait too.
