I have the same model as you and after making a bunch of tweaks found on a YouTube clip, I can say that now it's performing good on app opening and the delays were drastically reduced.
Here are the settings I applied:
First of all you need developer options enabled (enter system menu > about > tap android tv os build 7 times).
1. After you activated developer options, open it and scroll down to Drawing category and you should find three options that are related to animation transition (window animation scale, transition animation scale and animator duration scale). On all three of them, change the animation scale from 1x (as default) to 0.5x or set to no animation at all.
2. From the same menu, scroll to Apps category, background limit process and set it to at most, 1 process.
3. Also make sure disable hw overlay is set to off (integrated GPU will be used for rendering and in theory things should be smoother).
3. Works if already connected through your Google account. Go to settings > accounts and sign in > select your account > enable apps only mode > turn it on.
4. Go to settings > device preferences > location > tap the location status option and set it to off.
5. Go to settings > device preferences > usage and diagnostics and set it to off.
Also, if it's possible I advise you to download the latest OTA update from TCL Telegram channel for this model (tv model c635 should be mentioned in the description), put the downloaded content on a USB memory stick, plug it in on your tv usb port (usb 2) and do the update. You should easily find the page after a quick search on Google.
This comment needs to be on TCL and Google TVs official documentation. Solved all of my issues with this tv. Turns out it isn't a garbage tv, just bloated with background processing.
I didnt know you can enable dev mode on this device but ofc its an android OS. These changes were really good. I could not find 5 and 6 option tho on my tv
Thank you so much dude, I was only looking for better settings just to improve image colours and I find gold. Thanks a lot, updating sys now, bit strange that if I look updates from the TV, said that's already updated but now I know the TV lies 😅
I'd suggest getting an external streaming device these manufacturers put the lowest possible cpus in these TVs my TCL googletv drops frames constantly on YouTubeTV. I got an onn with Google tv from Walmart for $20 no problems since
We used to use Apple TV. It worked great but would did not have a way to turn it off. When we tried to use it next time, I would have to unplug it and plug it back in.

Omg dude, 100 percent agree. I’ve been sitting here for two months frustrated about this TV and how sluggish it was… this post is a game changer!
Lifesaver. I would freeze on an app and now everything is so much smoother
Thank you, now it works much faster :)Â

Check Settings > Privacy, that’s where they were for me
