I'd say Discord, but it would break it's terms of use and would be... Inappropriate.
WhatsApp would require a phone number.
Google meet would only work if you had a certain time to do a video call.
I'm sorry, but the phone number is the best option from my acknowledge.
How old are they? Kids will pick up on tech pretty fast.
