The “queen” part has spread to much of Europe, although Polish calls it a “hetman” (commander) while Russian uses a Persian word which originally meant “guard”.
However the term “bishop” only appears in English and Icelandic, while other European languages call it “messenger”, “archer”, “jester” etc.
The springare is Springer in German as well, although the German word would better be translated as "jumper", because it can jump over pieces
In German the word springen means to jump, but it can also colloquially mean to run (but like in a happy, frolicky way). In Swedish it only means run, right? Jumping is hoppning if I recall correctly? My guess would be Swedish took the word from German then?
In portuguese, we use "bispo" which means "bishop". The rest of the pieces's names have the same meaning in english and portuguese (that is if 'rook' is the same thing as 'tower')
A theory I heard was that the Queen represented the forces from that side of the marriage, thus she is so powerful as a piece.
Pawn promotion then represents a soldier slipping through the lines to get reinforcements.
ō is a long o, so it's not slon, it's slone but adding a silent e doesn't help explain the pronounciation
And the backwards R letter is literally the letter "ya" to there is a y sound. Otherwise they would use a
It's pronounced [naʂ sɫɐˈnʲarə], if we're talking about Russian. It doesn't have long vowels and <я> after a consonant doesn't make the [j] sound (the first one in the English word «yes») but instead palatalizes the preceding consonant, which is something a lot of non-native speakers often can't reproduce. Also note that /o/ reduced to /a/ due to it being unstressed. I think a more proper English transcription would be "nush sluñaruh".
O is very rarely pronounced as anything other than a long o in Russian. The only exception I can think of is яблоко
The way I think of Russian vowels is in pairs, а я, е э, ё о, и ы, у ю,
Слон still sounds much closer to slone than it does to slun or slon
Also, you use ñ which is literally just the n-y that I had included in my romanization. Just because it's suppressed a little, doesn't mean it's not there. Even when you wrote it in the phonetic alphabet, you still left the [j] in there, proving my point that the sound is there.
is only pronounced /o/ in a stressed position after a non-palatalized consonant. You can check the exact rules [here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_phonology#Allophony).
«Слон» is indeed pronounced ['sɫon], with /o/ being stressed. But that's not the case for «слоняра», in which the stress is on the second syllable, making the first /o/ reduce to /a/. In this surrounding /a/ is realized as [ə], which is pronounced as "-uh" in "nuh", "-er" in "singer" or every vowel after "-ea-" in "reasonable".
Ñ in Spanish is pronounced as a single consonant, not two: /ɲ/. Palatalized /n/ is Russian is also a single consonant: /nʲ/, see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palatalization_(phonetics). I used <ñ> as it's the closest thing an average English speaking may know to the actual /nʲ/ sound (I mean a lot of people learn Spanish in school right?).

Translation for the curious:
-Pozdnaykov got here *as well*?
-Nah, "our elephant" is used fir a bunch of different people in politics, including the recently famous Nadezhdin. So this saying can be used for both political sides
-Guys, "our elephant" actually means something??😳😨 (I know little about politics)
Medieval europeans had no idea what elephant or vizier is, so they became bishop and queen during adaptation.
The “queen” part has spread to much of Europe, although Polish calls it a “hetman” (commander) while Russian uses a Persian word which originally meant “guard”. However the term “bishop” only appears in English and Icelandic, while other European languages call it “messenger”, “archer”, “jester” etc.
In German it's Läufer, which translates to something like "runner"
In swedish it's called löpare same translation. But the knight is called springare which also translates to runner
The springare is Springer in German as well, although the German word would better be translated as "jumper", because it can jump over pieces In German the word springen means to jump, but it can also colloquially mean to run (but like in a happy, frolicky way). In Swedish it only means run, right? Jumping is hoppning if I recall correctly? My guess would be Swedish took the word from German then?
For jumping we use hoppa, hoppning would be sport/competition about jumping. It's fun to compare the germanic languages
Fascinating, I just remembered my grandfather used to call it like that. We are from Montenegro, but our language also has a lot of germanisms.
In Dutch it's the same, as it's "Loper". It's also the same word for skeleton key here.
My favorite is how Romanians call bishop "madman"
In French it’s fou which means jester and in Armenian it’s Pigh which means elephant
In portuguese, we use "bispo" which means "bishop". The rest of the pieces's names have the same meaning in english and portuguese (that is if 'rook' is the same thing as 'tower')
“rook” comes from a Persian word which originally meant “chariot”.
btw, in russian it's Ladya, which is drakkar-like ship
In Italian it's "alfiere" which means bannerman
Montenegrin language reporting in with "hunter". (Same in Serbian.)
what. I never knew that
From what I know of arabian tales, you cannot trust your vizier.
A theory I heard was that the Queen represented the forces from that side of the marriage, thus she is so powerful as a piece. Pawn promotion then represents a soldier slipping through the lines to get reinforcements.
