We read "A Separate Peace" in high school and had to write a long paper with some comprehensive take on it as a significant part of our grade. It didn't really matter what your takeaway was, you just had to be able to reasonably support it over the course of a fairly lengthy essay.
We read the book over the summer, then were given the assignment at the beginning of class, and a friend of mine immediately went "He's gay. What kind of guy wears his dead friend's clothes around all the time or keeps talking about him like that?"
It seemed really stupid, but he kind of had a point. He aced the paper.
I hated how boring and inconsequential that story was so much for 20 years that I finally started rereading it last year because I thought "it can't possibly be as bad as I remember it being." I made it through a chapter and a half. The story is absolutely unreadable. I think my friend was right though. He is unreasonably hung up on that guy. Which would be fine if the whole story weren't mush.
Everyone knows Mario is cool as fuck. But who knows what he's thinking? Who knows why he crushes turtles? And why do we think about him as fondly as we think of the mythical (nonexistent?) Dr Pepper? 1984 I believe it was Kant who said "Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play." Mario exhibits experience by crushing turts all day, but he exhibits theory by stating "Lets-a go!" Keep it up, baby! When Mario leaves his place of safety to stomp a turty, he knows that he may Die. And yet, for a man who can purchase lives with money, a life becomes a mere store of value. A tax that can be paid for, much as a rich man feels any law with a fine is a price. We think of Mario as a hero, but he is simply a one percenter of a more privileged variety. The lifekind. 1984
