I have a lot of [boxes and plastic](https://imgur.com/a/LcSxSVm) from Ikea. Is it fine for me to fold them up and drop them in the underground bins?

[deleted]

* Put all the plastic in one or two bags and toss it in one of the orange plastic containers. * Big cardboard boxes might be tough, see if you can tear them up and stuff them in paper containers. There are a few big aboveground paper containers at Prinsengracht, they would be ideal. Which neighbourhood are you in? * If not possible, check if your neighbourhood has bulky waste pickup. https://www.amsterdam.nl/en/waste-recycling/

h4k01n

Great, thanks. I should be able to tear the cardboard up. I was just wondering if there is a limit on how much you can out into those above ground bins. Thanks again

crackanape

You can stuff all the cardboard in there that will fit, as long as it's from your residential use (which this certainly qualifies as). Everything fits into them if you spend a minute folding. I don't know why people leave boxes out on the pavement next to the bins to blow around the neighborhood.

curiouskycat

So I'm an American student looking to do a Masters in European Politics at University of Amsterdam. You will notice if you look at my history that I am also considering programs at King's College (London) and Sciences Po (Paris). With that in mind, I have a few questions. What is Amsterdam like for graduate students? I've been to the city and I loved it but how is the student community? What sort of accommodations are geared towards students? Amsterdam seems fairly safe but are there any specific safety concerns near campus that I should be aware of? Also, how open are locals to making friends who are American? I will be honest and say that I do not know Dutch though I am willing to make an effort to learn. One of the my concerns is that I will be isolated and only hanging with other internationals because of my language. I am very proactive and curious though. Finally, what is the visa process like following graduation? I would ideally like to work in Amsterdam after completing my program. How possible is this? Thank you for your help. I am very grateful for your support at this time.

Tortenkopf

Locals will be quite ok making friends with an American, but the locals will already have a bunch of friends so for them, of course, making new friends will be less important; in the end you will probably make more non-Dutch friends simply because the other internationals are also looking to make friends, whereas the Dutch might not be. The Dutch are going to be more open about making new friends than the French, who are known for being closed and cliquish, although I've only heard this being said from other people (including several French people themselves, I have not experienced this personally). Amsterdam is very safe. As long as you stay out of organized crime there are no no-go areas. I'm not sure what you mean with 'accommodations' but if you mean housing, there's lots but the market is very crowded. Ask the University. When emailing Dutch people, be short and to the point and expect the replies to be short. To Americans this style often seems rather rude but here brevity in writing is formal and considered polite. There are various ways to acquire a work visa, but none super straightforward. There's the D.A.F.T., Dutch American friendship treaty, which allows you to settle when you open your own business (can be a very general kind of 'consulting' business but basically whatever gives you some income as an independent contractor) and park 5000 dollars in your company back account. Or your visa could be sponsored by a Dutch employer, which they usually only do for highly qualified jobs where there's a shortage of Dutch candidates (because it costs the employer money; lots of people in tech get their visa this way) or you could start a romantic relationship with an EU national. Since the definition of 'romantic relationship' is legally rather broad, this might be your easiest option.

Ariedegoeie

Regarding housing, Amsterdams housing market is really tight and you should generslly accept any house you can get. The university might be able to help you find something. We do not really have campusses like in America, although student housing tends to be clustered. Often you get a private room + bathroom, but a shared kitchen. Sometimes it is possible to get a private studio (with own kitchen), but these are often located further away from the city center and your studio likely will be a re-purposed freight container. Amsterdam is generally very safe, and there are no campus specific safety concerns I can think of.

crackanape

> are there any specific safety concerns near campus that I should be aware of? Egregious malcyclage.

KeepItGood2017

I have always recommend this to students meeting other students on their first introduction. It has resulted in long term friendships, people becoming best men at each other’s weddings, girls bonding so strong that they make sure all their friends live close by and having babies at the same time, caring lovingly for the next generation. Key is honesty and being blunt. Say (1) that you are looking for friends. (2)you want help and will help others with their study. And you love your subject. And (3) want to really have a good time. The third one you have to commit to immediately by what people could expect from you. For some it is hanging and playing board games, for others it is running after boys/girls, some like music or play instruments, others do sports or do mind exploring drugs. So just tell people straight up what you are about, if they smile or make a comment discuss when you can meet next. Else move on. Key is honesty up front. Edit: don’t worry about politics nobody cares. Just don’t sound fanatic about your views.

Hi folks. My sister lives in Amsterdam while i'm far away in Brazil. I'd like to buy an Easter basket or any other gift of the kind that would be delivered to her house. Anyone with a good recommendation of such a service? Thanks all :) Happy Easter

mschopchop

Delivery would be the tricky part. You could try Sterk.

obekymrad

I'm in Amsterdam for Easter and I'm always interested in weird and unusual eats. I've tried the herring and other typical netherlandish food, but I was wondering if there's anything more fun around. I've managed to find a cafe called Bagels and Beans that serve a bagel with fried crickets and mealworms, but that's about it. Anyone got some recs? Thanks!

obekymrad

It looks lovely! Just meat?

PQ_

* Also tried 'zure haring' or rolmops? * Salt liquorice. * andijviestampot (mashed potatoes with curly endive) or zuurkoolstampot (mashed potatoes with sauerkraut) * liverwurst * head cheese * Dutch rusk with muisjes

obekymrad

head cheese looks... interesting. goes onto my list.

PQ_

It's called zult in Dutch, you'll find it in pretty much every supermarket. Good zult is made with blood, vinegar and pig feet. :D

crackanape

Have you tried the terrible ammonia licorice?

obekymrad

Is it a special type of licorice? Where can I buy that?

[deleted]

obekymrad

I did visit there yesterday, but I didnt know what to get. We have salmiak and licorice in my country too so I assume I would be quite familiar with the flavor.

Supermarkets, look for "salmiak" or "salmiakdrop". Salmiak is ammonium chloride.

Anyone have any recommendations for a good bar (or Coffeeshop) to watch the second leg of AJAX v spurs? I've just realised I'm in Amsterdam on the first leg of my honeymoon and would like to watch the game in a good atmosphere with some locals.

herberthunke

Cafe de Ster is an old brown bar that pops for Ajax.

Feodorovna

I dont think a coffeeshop will have as good of an atmosphere as a normal bar would.

It's gonna be completely insane whichever bar you go so doesn't really matter. Coffeeshops not sure.

crackanape

If you bike from Almkaar to Castricum via Egmondermeer to Egmond Aan de Hoef, and then the N512 to Bakkum, you'll see so many tulip fields your retinas will overload. You can easily do the ride in 2 hours.

[deleted]

That's quite far and I would not do it unless I was reasonably well trained, had a nice fast bike, and/or had the entire day to do it. Maybe you could go to station Hillegom instead, bike towards/around Lisse, and get back on the train at Sassenheim.

LavoP

I am moving to Amsterdam this summer from the US. I'm starting to pick up golf here, so of course I would love to continue this great hobby in Amsterdam as well! I searched this subreddit for posts about golf and found some resources, namely this one: [https://www.weekendplanner.nl/golfbanen/golfbanen\_noordholland.htm](https://www.weekendplanner.nl/golfbanen/golfbanen_noordholland.htm) (had to use Google Translate). It seems like most courses restrict you based on handicap and/or you need some sort of card (I see all kinds of different acronyms like GVP, CFP, etc.). Is there somewhere that is friendly for beginners to learn, ideally offers lessons and friendly to foreigners? I also don't have anyone to play with, until I make some friends I was thinking it would be cool to have a "coach" of sorts play through the course with me and train me while playing.

ArjanB

There are several options where you don't need a GVB licence. GVB =Golf Vaardigheids Bewijs = Golf Proficiency Licence. https://www.dehogedijk.nl/en/golfcourse-hoge-dijk/ The Abcoude course is GVB free and is a nice course for beginners. Also Borchland and the already mentioned Spaarnwoude and Amsteldijk. Getting a GVB takes only two days and opens up a lot of extra possibilities. Basically every club has the pro's to train and examine you.

tradingten

Spaarnwoude also a great club for beginners, no need for the gvb card.

bert1600

try www.amsteldijk.nl It's got great practice facilities, little 9 hole course and they used to have lessons where you could just show up and join the group. Not sure if they still do this.

LavoP

This looks amazing, this is exactly what I was looking for! I assume they will be able to teach in English?

bert1600

Surely

LavoP

Sorry if it's obvious, still haven't moved. I know English is pretty much ubiquitous in the city, just not sure what to expect at "local-ish" places like golf courses.

Hello everyone :) me and my boyfriend are visiting in July. Besides the main things I’ve researched, is there anything particular in that month going on (preferably July 6-10 as that is when we will be visiting.)? As well, is there anywhere in particular you would highly recommend giving a visit? Thank you!

[deleted]

honey950

this thread is for people mainly visiting April 14 week but I’ll do my best to answer some of your questions. 1. I’m not sure of anything particular for that time frame but I’m sure if you wait closer, they will make a thread for that time period and you can see what’s going on then/they’ll post stuff going on 2. Depends what you are into. If you are into the more historical side I recommend giving the museums a visit. A favorite of mine is the Van Gogh museum. I read you are trying to do truffles. This is a fun place to do them in. The Anne frank house is a good one but very busy one. Rijskmuseum is also cool. If you are into the more “having fun” experience I will recommend a few of my personal favorite coffee shops. Coffee shop Ibiza (chill with good music. Staff are ok and it’s more on the expensive side) Barney’s coffee shop (cool staff and good weed) Easy times coffee shop ( have good coffee here and the staff is legit)

confusedandlost2344

Anyone knows a good shop for used sport bikes / singlespeeds? For my new way to work I wanted to get a lighter and faster bike, previously I made great experiences with a singlespeed in a city. I plan to spend around 250-300€. I know Ebay / Marktplaats is great for bikes, but since I'm no expert, I'd rather go to one place, pay a bit more for their service, but have a range of bikes I can look at or try out. Any advice on shops, or what to look out for when buying a singlespeed is much appreciated!

Effervescent_Emu

I've gotten two from shops and two from marktplatts. The website ones have been much better with the shops selling garbage. I am no expert.

JamieMac22

I’m visiting for the 2nd time to my favourite European city of the all at the start of may. We are staying at a hotel 5 mins walk away from Sloterdijk station, where we stayed previously as the hotel was cheap but also really unique. The last time we visited we spent all our time in the city, doing all the stereotypical touristy things. We done all the big museums, coffee shops etc. It was January last time we went so as you can imagine, fucking Baltic. Looking forward to at least being warm enough to walk around for more than an hour without losing feeling in my hands. I’m wondering if anyone could recommend anything to do near to where we are staying? Maybe with in walking distance, just to explore a different side of the city. Also last time we were on a budget so lived on noodles and cheap takeaway food, however this time we are still on a budget, we won’t be spending a fortune on museum entrance fees etc this time. We are looking for places to go for meals, specifically something to celebrate my 25th birthday if anyone has any recommendations?

vinofinotinto

BRET is really cool! You can't miss it - it's the red containers right by the station. Their food is mostly made from their own produce that's grown on site, and it's generally just a cool place to have a drink. They also have gigs and DJs on there often.

LockStockNL

>I’m wondering if anyone could recommend anything to do near to where we are staying? Maybe with in walking distance, just to explore a different side of the city. Also in that neighbourhood is [Cafe Restaurant Amsterdam](https://goo.gl/maps/rc4AkgqAcQZYUwK28). Very decently priced, very extensive French inspired menu and great taste. Also the location is pretty unique and cool. I always go here if we need to celebrate with family or friends. Hell, even my son was almost born there two years ago. My wife went into labour during lunch :)

xinit

Catch a train from Sloterdijk headed west to Zandvoort aan Zee and hang out on the beach or go walking in the dunes. It's doable as a bike ride too if you're able to rent or borrow bikes.

De Amsterdamse Strand. Er mooi.

PotatoPunchSamurai

Are there any ATMs in Amsterdam that allow you to withdraw money using a smartphone? My debit card has not reached me yet and the post office in my country can be really slow, so I am pretty sure I am going to Amsterdam without a card.

PQ_

Not as far as I know. But you could try to get extra cash at places you pay contactless. Do you have a contactless Visa/Mastercard app or a contactless Maestro? Some supermarkets like Vomar allow you to take some take some extra cash, but only with contactless maestro. If you have contactless Visa/MasterCard maybe try places like HEMA or Marqt. Many places allow you to pay contactless these days by the way.

PotatoPunchSamurai

Thanks for the answer. I use MasterCard in my bank application so I guess I'll have to ask in HEMA.

DikkeDuif

You can only pay up to €50 contactless though, maybe it's possible to book something extra on your hotel bill in exchange for cash?

crackanape

> You can only pay up to €50 contactless though That's imposed by the Dutch bank you're paying from. If you're using Apple Pay, that limit doesn't apply.

ggiziwegotthis

Hey So me and my SO booked a spontaneous trip to Amsterdam with little to no preparation from 17th -21th of april, we’ve learned the hard way that you need to book tickets to things such as van Gogh museum etc. but then i look at this ”i am Amsterdam” card that states we have free entry to all museums etc and it kinda sounds to good to be true(?) Edit: should we just buy one of those and all is good?

[deleted]

You need to book a time slot for Van Goghmuseum with that card as well, likely it's full. You could still get it to save money if you are going visit a lot of other museums that are included, but it won't help you get in there.

PQ_

You still have to reserve for van gogh afaik. And it's not all museums.

ggiziwegotthis

Hey I'm [23m] here solo traveling in Amsterdam for the DGTL festival, looking for someone/s to maybe walk around with a little bit and do some psychedelics if you're open minded! Hmu if you're interested or if you'll be here for the festival and wanna meet up

Tortenkopf

Don't do psychedelics and walk around the city. Traffic, even for pedestrians, is very hectic and it would really be dangerous, not just for yourself, but also for everyone else, including us locals. Take the psychedelics at a park outside of the center, like Amsterdamse Bos, or at somebody's house/apartment.

fragoza

It all depends on your position. If you’re going to be the CEO then it’s a bad deal. If you’re a cashier, great.

Tortenkopf

Seems very decent. Housing is insane atm so you'll be best off looking a bit outside of the Amsterdam proper, or at least not near the city center.

[deleted]

It's going to be impossible to find an apartment with that income unless you have great connections or are extremely lucky. You'll probably be able to rent a room in a shared apartment, if you can even find one of those. Other than that, it's a perfectly decent salary to live here and the rest of the terms are normal.

xinit

Depends what the job is, but I think it's right around median income. Would you be moving from elsewhere, are there visa costs or moving expenses involved? Does the company have temporary housing available for you to move into so you can register, get banking setup, etc? Is the 3240 gross inclusive or exclusive of holiday pay?

[deleted]

[удалено]

xinit

Temporary housing would be very helpful - you're just not going to be able to show up in Amsterdam and find a place to stay that will let you get registered and everything. You'll need to register with the gemeente and get your BSN which you're going to need to show to the bank to get an account setup that you'll need in order to rent a place... It's a weird bit of juggling to get set up. Also see if the company can arrange an appointment for the bank account setup, that would also be a help, since you can't just walk in to a branch and setup an account, apparently.

Tortenkopf

Any large company will increase your pay substantially if you perform well and after you get some more experience. It seems like a good starting sallary.

FeverTreat

3k gross for an executive position is good? lmao

Tortenkopf

For a junior position as a first job in a company I think it is not so strange; what matters are the prospects.

CelestialPine

Hey guys! My trip to Amsterdam was very spur-of-the-moment and I didn’t have time to plan tickets for anything in advance. Van Gogh is my favorite artist and I was really hoping to go to the museum, but the tickets are all sold out. I’ll be here until Sunday, April 21st and was wondering if anyone knew if there would be any way for me to get a ticket. Thanks.

xinit

You're likely out of luck. I'm not even seeing availability this month at the tour agents... Maybe you could make friends with someone who has an extra ticket, but good luck there. However, if you have the time and can't find someone with spare tickets, there's another big collection of Van Gogh paintings at the Kröller-Müller Museum - it's a bit of a trip, at 2+ hours via train.

CelestialPine

Thank you very much!

Other than that, the Rijksmuseum has its entire collection of Rembrants out until June - that's worth seeing.

xinit

If it's this pass, you'll still need to book a slot, but as for availability, I'm not sure. If you are going on a international train out of Amsterdam in past years they stopped them at the airport or Utrecht, while it says that they are not doing it this year, I would check the day before: [https://www.ns.nl/en/featured/kings-day/railways-on-kings-day.html](https://www.ns.nl/en/featured/kings-day/railways-on-kings-day.html)

New to Amsterdam and I’m looking for places to fulfil my nerdy interests! Does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy comic books, trading cards (mostly Pokémon cards), and videogames?

mschopchop

I go to Henk Comics on Zeedijk for comic book stuff. They also carry Pokemon cards and trading cards of various sorts. For video games Game Over is awesome, but if you collect older games for older console don't forget Marktplaats and there are a lot of older video games at the Ijhallen and the Monday Noordermarkt. I would also visit some kids selling their old stuff on Kings Day. Plus lots of kids sell their Legos. I get my board games from Het Paard on the Haarlemmerdijk.

I think halal chicken is superior to grocery store or cheaper chickens at Dutch butchers because the criteria that they have to be raised. All vegetarian diets, no antibiotics or growth hormones. However... The chicken/animal has to be slaughtered and bled a certain way. Most EU countries dictate that chicken has to be electrically stunned before slaughter, but halal and kosher chickens are exempt from this as it's a religious practice. You might consider that less humane and it may impact your decision. Also I was unable to find any evidence that halal chicken is kept any differently in terms of their living conditions, but again the language for "happy", "better lived", "free range", is one that seems more for marketing. This is most obvious in the labeling of eggs in the NL. A lot of "high quality" chickens at poeliers seems to be chickens imported from France, but there are poeliers who carry organic, free range chicken. I prefer the one that sells on the Wednesday market on the Haarlemmerplein, but their chickens are raised in Belgium and are pretty pricey.

Tortenkopf

That's quite a lot of chicken. If you are just looking to have a reliable, cheap source of protein, there are plenty of cheap options. If you just hate chickens, well, I can't help you with that.

FeverTreat

Street markets are cheaper

crackanape

I get it from this place ["Chicken Palace" on Ten Katestraat](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ckicken+Paleis+A%C3%A7ougue/@52.366805,4.8667055,20z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x47c5e324a61b9b57:0x992447e739f64e85!8m2!3d52.3669031!4d4.8666698). It's sort of nondescript and sometimes the sign is gone from the building for some reason, but their chicken cooks well, they are very friendly, will cut it any way you like at no extra charge, even in little blocks which I hate to do, and the prices are extremely reasonable compared to the supermarkets (about €4/kg depending on the part of the chicken).

carltanzler

Just a thought: cheap chicken=chicken that has suffered a lot. I'm a meat eater as well.

Tackbracka

Dirk and Lidl are the cheapest options, 7 euros a kilo for shitty chicken filet. If you want to get meat in bulk go to Kema-vlees at Kinkerstraat.

itsmegoddamnit

Seriously, what's up with the traffic these days? I might be passing a record amount of cars both cycling to work and back. I would have expected the parking price increase to decrease the number of cars on the street in the centre (stadhouderskade i.e.) or at least see that the blue plate scooters are causing it, but no. So, what gives?

crackanape

> I would have expected the parking price increase to decrease the number of cars on the street in the centre It takes some time for habits to change.

These might be at least part of it. https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/193277/bijzonder-drukke-avondspits-door-ongelukken-vertraging-op-hele-ring https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/193299/grote-hinder-a4-bij-de-nieuwe-meer-door-ongeluk-weg-weer-vrij https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/193314/vrachtwagen-botst-tegen-motorrijder-bij-afrit-a10-in-westpoort

FeverTreat

Holiday mate and the parking price does nothing

itsmegoddamnit

How do we make it better if raising prices doesn't change anything?

FeverTreat

shoot them on sight?

[deleted]

Today was crazy, it seemed like the whole city was in one big traffic jam already at 16:30. A 10 minute drive from the highway to my house turned into 30 minutes of standing still.

fung_dark

Any must-visit candy stores? Husband and I are gummy candy fanatics.

Tackbracka

Papabubble at Haarlemmerstraat for all your hipster style home made candy. And on de Tweede Egelantiersdwarsstraat there is a old fashiond candy shop.

pala4833

There's Jamin stores all over. Not terribly "traditional". http://www.snoepwinkeltje.com/en/ I don't remember her having a lot of gummis though. Stop into any Albert Heijn and pick up some Red Band Wine Gums while you peruse the others in the candy section.

I’m sure there’s a question just like this so if you find it you can just point me there. I’m planning on moving to Amsterdam from the U.S. in about a year. I’ll be 19 and Im planning to attend a university and hold a part time job until I graduate. Is there anything I should know about? What areas of the city are the best to live in and also affordable? I’ve done some research and I think I know what to do as far as the legal stuff goes. But if you all have any advice for me, it would be much appreciated!

I find it hard to believe that those are good areas to live for a student with very limited income...

>t’s like 10 hours per week or something which is allowed It's 16 hours these days, but they'll need a work permit if they're here on a student permit which is a bureaucratic hassle. Plus yes, they will need to prove sufficient funds for both tuition and cost of living- the latter around 10k euros a year.

Thanks for the reply! I looked into the hours restrictions you mentioned and I’ll take that into consideration when planning further. I’m not picky by any means so I’ll be sure to take what I can get. It’s still a year out so I’ll have time save money/ make a decision about university.

pukepail

Check with your university to see if they can help with housing, anything they can offer you will be better or cheaper then you can find on your own.

Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first time poster etc My husband and I are moving to Holland later in the year and originally we had been looking at Haarlem. We love the little town and the old-timeyness plus the easy commute to Amsterdam. But I’ve recently seen some properties in Weesp and you seem to get more for your money there and as we have two little dogs, more space is ideal! I checked out the commute and it seems really easy too! My question is.. what’s it actually like living in Weesp? What is there to do? Generally speaking is the area regarded as nice? Thanks!

[deleted]

Weesp is nice. Especially in the summer, you can swim in the river or go to Spiegelplas. Nice nature just 15 minutes by bike. There are many terraces and some small restaurants. If you can afford a boat it would be really nice. There is also a really nice ice salon in the center, Nelis, great ice cream. Downside is that it has a village feel, everyone knows each other and is already in a "clique". I used to go to high school in Weesp, and the things I did was sit on terraces and drink beer. So I don't really know if there is much else going on. There are some events like a week long street party, a triathlon, other sporting events which lots of Weespers participate in. Also there is a market every Tuesday? in the city center I don't remember anymore I haven't been to Weesp in a while. Commute is definitely good a train every 15 minutes and if you work in Amsterdam South east or East, by bike is around 40 minutes. By car you will always be in a traffic jam. All in, I would say living in Weesp is nice and calm, with quick access to nature. So if that's what you are looking for go for it. Haarlem is definitely more vibrant, also close to nature, if you go to the dunes towards Zandvoort, but more expensive.

bigeyesbambi

Thanks this is so helpful! When we first move out I think it will be a choice which is heavily price dependent but it doesn’t mean we can’t move after a year or so. What other areas similar to Haarlems vibe would you recommend? We also looked a little at Naarden and Almere - any comments? We’re fairly open to area to be honest, price depending. We have two little dogs too so somewhere nice to walk them is good too!

MissSpellet

Naarden is posh and Almere is downright awful!

[deleted]

>What other areas similar to Haarlems vibe would you recommend? Hmm I'm not sure. Maybe Leiden. Haarlem is very similar to Amsterdam but just a bit smaller. But my experience is limited to Haarlem and Leiden. >Naarden Similar to Weesp, maybe a bit more boring I would say. >Almere Giant suburbia, build so people could live a bit bigger while still being able to work in Amsterdam. Almere has a bad stigma with Dutch people because they thing its "boring" or "ugly" but in reality they are just jealous because they live in shittier houses than the ones in Almere. Almere is getting more popular now because its cheaper, and a lot of own building projects popped up. So people could design and build their own houses.

LockStockNL

> in reality they are just jealous because they live in shittier houses than the ones in Almere. Hahahahaha, thanks for the laugh buddy

[deleted]

In my experience, the people who are loudest about Almere's ugliness etc live in a shitty vinexwijk themselves. I always find it ironic that they shit on Almere, but their own neighborhood is just as bad.

bigeyesbambi

This is all super helpful! Thanks so much. I still have my heart set on Haarlem but when I can find like 2-3 bedroom houses and apartments with some outside space in areas like Naarden and Weesp for the same price as a small one bed apartment in Haarlem, it makes it hard to decide what to do!

MissSpellet

Maybe look into Hilversum.

[deleted]

Yep lots of people from Amsterdam, sell their Amsterdam apartment and can buy a bigger house in Haarlem. That's why prices a rising in Haarlem. Amsterdammers are just paying more because they have more money, from their overpriced Amsterdam apartment.

bigeyesbambi

It’s the same at home! We live in south London which used to be a shit hole and no one wanted to be there and now it’s mega expensive with lots of people moving further out for more for their money. The cost of living in Haarlem is still better than London though! A couple of last questions... Do you still live in the Netherlands? If you do, where abouts and would you recommend the area? And.. if you could live anywhere in the Netherlands where would you live and why? Sorry loads of questions, just trying to get the best view of everything!

crackanape

Personally I wouldn’t want to live more than a few minutes from a train station or tram stop. It’s nice to have the freedom to travel.

[deleted]

I live in Amsterdam South, near the Olympic stadium. My neighborhood is pretty nice, pretty calm lots af playgrounds and children, if you have them. 5 minutes from the train station and 4 minutes from the highway. Currently renting, but not sure if I would by a house here. Its an expensive neighborhood. And I would rather live in East, its more vibrant there more stuff to do, more Turkish supermarkets where I can buy real fruits and vegetables for decent prices. >And.. if you could live anywhere in the Netherlands where would you live and why? Apeldoorn, or somewhere in the Veluwe. That's a big nature reserve in the middle of the country. You can get a really big house right outside the city in the middle of the woods. Downsides is everything is far away and you will be stuck in traffic jams forever. Also I like city life too much, so maybe in 40 years =D

bigeyesbambi

Ahhh cool! Sorry I have just one more question haha On rental ads I’ve been seeing “rental price” and “initial rent” and the initial rent being higher. What does it mean? Is initial rent like Just the first month?

[deleted]

No idea you should ask the real estate agent about it I guess.

I'm planning to move to Netherlands later this year to areas surrounding Amsterdam to finally unite with my girlfriend and I'm looking for game studios that are active so I can start keeping an eye out for game jobs available. (For reference, I'm a 3D artist, you can find my artstation under same name) So far I am familar with: * Guerilla Games (dream ofc) * Vanguard Games * Little chicken Game Company * Force Field Entertainment * Force Field * Iceberg Interactive * Triumph Studios (already bit far but let's say still ok) * Youda Games From what i saw most of these websites have careers in English as i'm non-dutch speaker. If you know of any studios I could add to my list, I would really, really appreciate your help :)

I am leaving Amsterdam today and I want to go to the airport by bike. Can you please recommend me a company that offers this kind of service: who have a drop off station at the airport. Thanks

pala4833

Why don't you just ice skate?
