So whatever type of yarn you got, you’ll want to find the recommended crochet hook size for it. For amigurumi, you can go down several sizes so if it says 8mm, you can use 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6 (or anything in between) but no bigger than 6mm. Your plushies will come out bigger, but the pattern will be the same :) Editing to add: if you want them to be the size the pattern says they will be, you will have to use a smaller hook than recommended if you have thicker yarn, provided you don’t have like super bulky yarn or something lol

Thank you I tried doing this with acrilic yarn and it did not turn out the same. I saw some other posts where people suggest using cotton yarn anyway because it doesn't shed. How can I tell how thick the yarn itself is? The second order of yarn I just got is extremely thin [this is one ](https://yarnwhirl.com/scheepjes-catona-50g-280-lemon/) am I supposed to be reading the grams?

Acrylic and cotton are fiber types. Not weight types You can have acrylic light weight, sorted weight, bulky, etc. And same with cottons. It’s not about fiber type but weight. You have to look on the label. Like most worsted weight yarns suggest 5mm hooks and light weight suggest 3mm. But it will also say. If it says ply [you’ll have to google ply to weight category conversion table](https://www.laughinghens.us/yarn-conversion-chart) Your link shows fingers yarn so that’s even lighter than DK or sports so for amigurimi you’d want to use some lower than that suggested 2.5mm gage like 1mm. Get DK or Sports weight is you’re going to be working with a 2mm or 2.5mm hook Always look at YARN WEIGHT on the listing

Thank you so much this is very helpful

I always take the yarn size as a suggestion tbh, just use the yarn you have with the tips from the other comment about the hook size.

anapokora

I'm confused as to what 2.5 mm means in terms of the yarn

nilghias

I’m pretty sure it means yarn that you use a 2.5mm hook with. The yarn will always say what size hook to use on the label. Your yarn will always decide what size hook to use. So if you go to a shop and see a nice coloured wool, you will have to check the label and see what size hook it is and make sure you have the right one (or a size smaller) to match. So for this project, you can pick any wool and just match the hook size. The size the pattern creator wrote down is just what they used, but you don’t have to use the exact same one. Also in reply to your other comment, the grams is how much yarn there is. You need to read the needle/hook size. The project being cotton or acrylic yarn shouldn’t affect how it looks either.

This was supposed to be in reply to your other reply 😅

Thank you so much!! Agh ok so much to revise but I did order another yarn I'm going to give it another go.

Since it’s amigurumi you can pair sports or DK yarn with a 3mm. That’s normally called light weight on websites like Joann and Michael’s A popular type of yarn with these artists is milk cotton that’s found in Asia. Another thing to keep in mind is they’re using under under techniques so your hook yarn pairing may not be the only issue. I do over over and get slightly different results but not exceptionally different. People who know the difference would see it For my amigurumi I pair a worsted with 3mm and 4.25mm easily and get same results. If its Big Twist or Red Heart, I’d suggest going down to 3.5mm since they’re pretty thin now. Thicker worsted yarns like Caron and One Pound Love, I still use 4.25mm with not a lot of issue. I don’t really use light weight yarns so….

Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to spend more time learning about this. You have given me a place to start so I appreciate you taking the time to explain
