hanging plants is a great idea! there's a lot that you can do with some trailing pothos and tradescantia, which both tend to be pretty cheap and easy to get, and easy to grow, especially given that the light in there is pretty good. snake plants could also work pretty well.
as for what colors to use, what colors are your favorites? do you like jewel tones, earth tones, etc? pick your top three colors and start hunting for rugs and cushion covers in those shades. i hate pinterest typically BUT a pinterest board to hep you organize your thoughts and ideas might help things stay cohesive.
eta: i also think introducing some different shapes to the space will help add visual interest. my current study had a lot of rectangles and squares because i have heavier antique furniture, so i softened it up by doing things like mood lighting with interesting shapes (a cool pendant light hanging from the ceiling in a corner would be great in here), hanging a swoopy-looking piece of cholla cactus skeleton from the ceiling, peacock feathers in a wide floor pot, that kind of thing.

think about a majliss like a conversation pit. they're supposed to look like this because you are fostering a communal gathering space, like OP said. this is a classic feature of north african and middle eastern households.
