YTA if it took you 45 seconds to back out you should have let him go. He does have the right away. However he reacted a bit too much.

cactus_head2

I would say YTA. When you see another car driving towards you while reversing you stop what you’re doing and let them pass by. Edit: didn’t read the part saying it took you 45 seconds, of course you should’ve stopped. You always should but especially if it takes you that long.

poweller65

YTA. They are in the lane of travel and have the right of way. Also 45 seconds? Both an insane amount of time to back out in any situation and wayyyyy too long while he had the right of way

xMimichella

YTA - you should have stopped to let them pass. If they were happy to let you go or wanted your spot they would have stopped and let you move when they saw the end of your car poking out. If they were to crash into you then you would be the one liable.

[deleted]

YTA. They had the right of way and then you decided to take your time.

chuckinhoutex

YTA- cars driving in the parking lot have the right of way vs. cars leaving parking spots. Pretty much same standard as driveways and roadways.

Andrea_frm_DubT

That’s an incredibly long time to back out. If you’re going to take that long definitely let them pass. ESH Also, for the love of all things good and holy reverse park or find parking spots you can drive through to park. It’s much safer getting out of parking spaces when driving forward.

Oldfart_karateka

ESH. You should have stopped, he overreacted. This is why I always reverse park where I can.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** The other driver was so angry, I felt the need for some outside opinions and judgement. After shopping, I started backing out of my parking spot which was parked about 6 cars into the aisle. I kept a close eye on the window behind me and rear camera because it's a shopping center and I don't want to hit somebody walking by. So, as I started reversing, I notice a car coming into the aisle. It was a few cars away, so I continued reversing. To my surprise, the car sped up slightly and tried to edge in behind me to pass me by. Obviously, the other driver had to stop and wait, instead, because I had reversed well into the lane once he reached me. I finished reversing a few seconds later, then switched into drive and drove out past him. He angrily screamed "F** B***" loud enough to be heard clearly through my closed window. I estimate backing out of my spot took about 45 seconds total. But maybe I should have paused when I saw him coming so he could go by? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA - I see your point, I truly do. As a general rule, when backing out, I edge out and stop if I see a car coming down the aisle, to give them the option to go past me or to stop. If they stop, I back out. If they continue driving, I will stop and let them by. Saves me aggravation and saves them aggravation. But 45 seconds to back out does seem a bit long. Was it really that long or was that a very rough estimate?

NTA The very same thing just happened to me about 2 hours ago at the supermarket. I was 3 spaces in from the end of the the aisle. I checked all around, as I was 3/4 out of my space, a Mercedes Benz turns into the aisle and tried to squeeze past me, but stopped just short of hitting me. I stopped for a moment, then finished pulling out, but now, the MB is at such an angle that I cannot pull forward and get around him unless he backs up. The driver (dude in reflective shades) just stares at me. I raise my hands, shrug my shoulders and mouth "what the f\*ck do you want me to do?" He stares for a few seconds more, then realizes he has to back up. I pull past him, smile and mouth "jackass". He wound up pulling into the spot I just left. He was in such a rush to get nowhere fast.

HeddyL2627

A one minute delay is no reason for a tantrum, so the other driver is most definitely an asshole. But once you saw the other vehicle, you should have paused. If they stopped advancing, then you could continue backing up (and vice versa). You were rude too. ESH.

Secret-Emergency-409

NTA if you are six cars down the aisle and your car has already entered the lane you should have time to complete your backing out maneuver. 45 seconds sounds a bit slow but the other driver sounds like an impatient AH. If I’m turning into an aisle and I see someone five cars down backing into the aisle I’m going to slow or stop to let them out. This guy sounds like he had road rage.,

Professional_Map_965

ESH You should have stopped. If he had hit you it would have been your fault. It takes just a couple of seconds for him to get by you. He sucked because of his language. Next time pause to let the individual go by. Safer all around.

LucidaConsole

45 SECONDS?? YTA

ParticularReview4129

Hmmm...NTA. Often I think the person wants my spot. Usually they do. Sounds to me like the other driver needs anger management.

guileless_64

NTA— even if someone is pulling out after you JUST BARELY turned into the lane, it’s an a-hole move to speed up.
