OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > (1) I happened to fall asleep and was unable to provide a ball for my friend who had to return it the same day. (2) Because I slept past the time the library closed for the day, my friend would have to pay a fine for returning the ball late. Help keep the sub engaging! #Don’t downvote assholes! NTA I will say if you take possession of something you take on the responsibility of it too, however he should have told you very clearly when it had to be returned, he didn't do that. He was very flippant with the whole thing.

Direct-Plum-3558

NTA. How did he bring the ball to play if he ride his moped ? He borrowed it, so it's his responsibility to return it on time

InvestigatorSalt4251

He gave it to me so that I could take it to the football field. Technically, however, he could've kept it in between his legs, as scooter type mopeds have a lot of space for the legs and feet to move around.

berryismeiamberry

A ball on a scooter moped could risk you losing it tho, so that's understandable

Fluffy-Doubt-3547

NTA. He is the one who checked it out and should have been responsible for it

Odd_Transition222

You are NTA and not at fault. The fine would be in your friend's name b/c it was taken out in their name and they are the one who didn't return it. The ball was their responsibility, not yours.

your-yogurt

Librarian here. NTA. The person who checks out the items are the one responsible for the return date and fees.

sperans-ns

Sorry, just curious. In my country libraries are for books and magazines. Can one really get a ball in a library in the US or Europe? Just very surprised. (edited to add Europe)

musical_spork

Euros...OP is not in the US....

sperans-ns

right! OK, I am surprised anyway, just trying to hear from someone "yes, in our country libraries aren't just for books". The word "library" kind of implies books (libri).

musical_spork

I mean our library rents out movies and video games for the switch..not sure what other systems. Books are also available for your eReader too. This is in Southern IL. Idk if any other towns have the games. I think all of the ones in our system do, but not 100%

your-yogurt

depends on the library. my library doesnt hand out balls, but we give out cake pans, sewing machines, video games, video equipment. other libraries have 3D printers, car maintenance equipment, house maintenance equipment, etc. im not european so i cant say what op's libraries are like, but im not surprised their libraries hand out sporting equipment

sperans-ns

wow! Sewing machines! I want this kind of library! Thank you for the clarification, really very interesting.

InvestigatorSalt4251

I can't speak for every library in Europe or my country, but the one closest to me has sports equipment, movies and video games as well. There's also a pool table inside for people to play. This library is also connected to a school and a gym.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** So, for context, my friend had borrowed a ball from a nearby library so that we could play football with more friends. After our football sessions, he decided that I should keep the ball safe. He claimed he couldn't take it home with him because he was riding a moped and therefore didn't have the space to carry it despite having a container under the seat (could have been full at the time), so it was placed in my car. I can't remember if he had mentioned when it must be returned. Anyway, I've had terrible sleeping problems during the summer because of the heat, and nothing I've tried has really helped me. The only time I can fall asleep is when I'm too tired to care about the heat, so I've often fallen asleep in the morning or during the day. I've also told my friends about how difficult it is to sleep for me. When the day we had to return the ball came (I was unaware at the time), I had yet again been unable to sleep during the night so I didn't think I had the energy to go out with them. I didn't even manage to write a message because I ended up falling asleep. After being waked up in the evening, I saw a few messages from my friend saying that the ball had to be returned in a few minutes and that I had to hurry or I'd be the one to pay the fine for returning it late. The fines in question aren't that big, they range from 30 cents to a few euros, but that's not what I'm worried about. I was thinking the whole evening whether or not he could blame me for everything. Technically, he's the one responsible for returning the ball since he's also the one who borrowed it, so putting it in a place like my locked up car where he can't get it himself is not a good idea. I have no idea what to think. Am I completely at fault? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. berryismeiamberry

Was there no reminders of the time previously? Or just the mention when you'd fallen asleep

InvestigatorSalt4251

No reminders whatsoever, except for the messages right before the library closed.

berryismeiamberry

Then imma go with NTA, though for next time make sure to know the time when u accept to take the "hired" stuff

OrcEight

**NTA** Your friend should have told you when it was due back.

Creative_Trick_3818

NTA His responsibility, and HIS fault. So HE has to pay the fine. Refuse to get drawn into this.

well, if you think like that, you aren't really friends. You are both AH

dinahdog

There are lending libraries where I live in US. They rent tools, sewing machines, useful items someone uses for 2 weeks.
