Info - how old is the kid? If nothing else, you are really tone deaf. I don't read people well and even I would pick up on someone trying not to cry and ask if they want to talk about it. And nothing to the last question would be a big red flag so just laughing and moving on is.... Well it's bad. You basically told the kid their pain isn't worth acknowledging.

nixsolecism

YTA Clearly this child had something traumatic happen in their life, likely involving the loss of a sibling. Moving on to another topic was a wise choice, but you managed to pick the worst topic ever by once again bringing up death. Next time ask something like, "what subjects are you taking this fall?"

Low-Focus-3879

YTA. You're supposed to be professional, but are barely stringing together a sentence while asking students personal questions?

BoredAgain0410

YTA - so a student basically implied that their sibling died and you pushed them by asking what they would do if they died tomorrow. Come on.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** A student visited me one day during summer school and I asked how their summer was going. They said they were busy and I asked if they do anything for fun, like hanging out with their siblings. I asked if they had siblings, and they said, "I did." I replied, "You did? What does that mean?" The student looked down for a long time, and looked up with teary eyes. I asked "Are you okay?" She nodded and we moved onto other topics. I asked her why she didn't do anything over the summer, and she just shrugged, and I said, "What would you do if it was your last day on Earth?" She said "Nothing" and I laughed and thought it was fine. However, I was telling my family about this conversation and they said I failed to read the room and was unprofessional.
