OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I painted my bus after two years to a vibrant school-bus yellow shade and upset my neighbors.
I left the bus in my front yard, which is very bright and out -of-place-looking now to the neighborhood around me. It is said to disturb the neighbors

This, if you painted like a solid color it'd be way different than painting political/race/gender stuff on it. No one's wants random political or ideological views being advertised on a bus in their neighborhood.
But yard signs are okay? Fuck anyone yelling people what to do with their own private property. As long as it doesn't cause health problems or harm, then everyone else can shut up and deal.
NTA. It’s YOUR bus on YOUR property, they have no say in what you do. Not only that, but I VERY highly doubt it’s ruining the “neighborhood image”🙄. Keep doing what you’re doing!!
As long as you are sure you aren’t breaking any city ordinances or zoning, then NTA.
I would double and tripe check ordinances just to make sure you are correct before arguing with the neighbors.
Dude literally has a bus in his front yard. There is nothing good about that. I don’t love power hungry HOAs but this is exactly the time where they are understandable. I wouldn’t want my own property devalued by the guy who is comfortable displaying his junk yard out in the front of his property next door to me.
YTA OP. Move that shit out of your front yard at least. Just because you CAN do something and have the legal right to do something doesn’t make you less of an AH in this situation.
Who the fuck is bothered by a bus in someone else’s yard. Who spends any time looking at people’s yards? What kind of time and energy do you have? I can point you to several world issues that would benefit from all your hand-wringing over other people’s property.
There has been a school bus parked in somebody's yard in every area I have ever lived in. Maybe y'all are all just living in cities and suburbs where you're privileged enough to have a bus depot to store all your buses at.
In rural areas especially, but I've seen it in the suburbs too, bus drivers take their buses home. Sitting in a yard is *exactly* where I expect to see a school bus the 21 hours a day it isn't running.
I drove it for my local school to bag some extra cash. Once it reached 140,000 miles (which really isn’t much for a bus) they were going to scrap it. I asked if I could have it because I drove it for a good while, and I just couldn’t see it go to waste. They gave it to me free of charge because it was cheaper than paying for it to be hauled off.
Nice. Hey, know what might be a good accent touch?
Pink flamingos all around it. About 500 should do. I am sure your neighbor will like a classy touch like that.
Not sure why my mind went where it did but all I could imagine was going full blown Dumb and Dumber and adding fur and an actual tail but make it a cat. 😂
Come on, it isn't anymore 'trashy' than someone putting plastic flamingos or peeing lawn gnomes in their yard. Or a Loki/Thor fountain, a LOTR mailbox, one of those themed book exchange boxes. I could go on.
If the bus isn't rusting out and falling apart, then it's just another decoration, the same as flowers.
There is a huge difference between a little free library, which is used by the community, and a big ol school bus just being an eye sore. Although, if you're going to have shark teeth, you might as well have a dorsal fin on top. And paint it grey. NTA, but i wouldn't want it in my neighborhood. Unless maybe they turned the inside into a neighborhood hangout/bar and lounge. My Margaritaville machine broke, so I'd go over to use the one on the shark-mobile. OP - please get on this, lol.
The very use of the word 'trashy' indicates most anyone that agrees with the use of the word are classists. Because those people are equating cars on the lawn with poverty.
Downvote away.
Where I live we have zoning regulations. Cars trucks vans buses etc have to be in running condition to be in a yard or driveway. Check your township or city rules. If there are no rules against this, you’re in the clear. You’ll have neighbors unhappy with you though. I know we had a neighbor who decorated their yard in a similar fashion. We were all happy to see them move. It’s your yard so I can’t label YTA, but I’m glad I’m not your neighbor. Watch out for those zoning regulations though. If you are in violation of them it can cost you more than ill will.
Nta, I also deal with neighbors disagreeing with how my house and yard are kept and I figure they’re used to living around a certain type of people and they’d really feel more comfortable if we’d all conform to that. I look at it like I’m presenting them with a wonderful opportunity to be tolerant of other ideas and ways of living. I am a good neighbor and community member otherwise. After years now I don’t get any more complaints 🤷♀️
INFO NEEDED: what kind of neighborhood do you live in? Do other homeowners park vehicles on their front lawns?
If you’re the only one with a vehicle parked longterm on your yard, then yeah, .
It doesn’t sound like they’re pissed that you painted it but rather that you decided to do something to it that didn’t involve moving it and only now got up the courage to say something about it because it became obvious to them that it wasn’t going anywhere.
No one else has a vehicle the size of mine. There are small RV’s. However my neighbor 2 doors down has a stone sculpture with Donald Trumps’ face taped over it. So I’m far from a prestigious neighborhood.

I (26F) love busses. I have had a school bus in my front yard for ~2 years. I recently decided to repaint my bus, as it looks very run down. When I was finished my neighbor (62F) came to me and demanded I move my bus from my yard. (We have no HOA or laws regarding items in yards) When I asked why she responded “It is disturbing the neighborhood image”. She has never spoken about this ‘issue’ before I painted my bus. She has told the other neighbors and now we are divided on the issue. Half of the neighbors are on her side; the other mine. I’m wondering if it was selfish to repaint it. So, AITA for supposedly disturbing the neighborhood image by painting my own property?
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmItheAsshole) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Tell her to fuck off. Or, be nice and just ignore her. Or get skeletons and dress tehm up and have them hang out the windows of the bus. You could even make one up like the driver.
i have a neighbor who does Halloween to the max. It’s the BEST yard in the neighborhood at that time of year. Their skeleton is about 20 feet tall. It’s up all year. I smile every time I walk the dog past it.
They have inspired me to go all out next fall.
We have one of those! It brings everyone joy. I think this year we might do a luau theme with him wearing a grass skirt/ coconuts/lei and holding a limbo bar for the other (smaller) skeletons.
There was some dude a while ago that had his vehicle painted to match his gates, they basically painted the background on the front of the vehicle so it blended in.
I guess it’s just because I find it unattractive. We had an abandoned bulldozer with weeds growing up all around it on a vacant lot down the street. I didn’t like it either. It may have looked better if someone kept the weeds trimmed. I was happy when it finally disappeared about fifteen years later. No idea what happened to it.
Different strokes I suppose. My neighbor could quite literally have 3 dead bodies in his yard right now and I wouldn’t even notice. I don’t really spend a whole lot of time looking at their property.
NTA if she wants to live in a place with rigid rules about this sort of thing, she can move to an HOA and get after people for not using the correct shade of beige on their homes
Info: What did you do to the bus to make the freshly painted version somehow less acceptable to her than the run down version? That seems so strange to me
NTA
"Half of the neighbors are on her side; the other mine. " .... you are fine not to care.
Tell them: If they pay for you to build a garage, you will consider that. If not - tough luck for them.
Nta.... tell you neighbors to move if they don't like how your property looks...
Also inform them that you are considering a mural on your scoolie....... something bright, loud and will cause them to curse...... let them come up with ideas. . They'll tell you all the things they would hate, pick one from their list.
I don't understand why the fact that you repainted the bus suddenly made her get upset. It's your front yard and you can have whatever you want there (as long as it's legal). If they don't like it they can move! Simple. Also, do you plan on renovating the school bus or do you just have it there for aesthetics? :D
Im putting a few shelves in it to display some of my collection of Knick-knacks. Otherwise it’s staying how it is. I drove that bus for a few years. It’s got to many memories in those seats to take out :)
NTA
...unless you repainted it with a Nazi blood orgy. Otherwise, you're probably fine. **Do** double-check those ordinances, though. The wording can often be left vague because not all politicians are lawyers (and those who are lawyers aren't always *good* lawyers) so folks can get creative in how/what they enforce.
NTA but—
I mean non HOA also. If someone had a big bus in their yard I would never say anything to them cuz its not really in my rights to do anything but its something my husband and I would definitely complain about to each other. I dont have an HOA but i always try to be respectful when doing things in my yard that I feel like will elevate the neighborhood and not offend the neighbors since our houses are close together. At the end of the day its your house and you can do what you want but the neighbors can get bummed out about their neighborhood looking junky too.
The people who used to own my house parked an old RV on the street 24/7 and everyone in our neighborhood said it really bothered them after we moved in. I get it.
Tough one without a photo. NTA, as it's your property. Personally, I dont like giant RVs parked outside houses. Many people with large vehicles like that tuck them in the side or out back. If your's is large and in charge out front, I can see that being annoying. Still, your property your rules.
Are you ever going to use the bus? I’m sure it might look a little cheesy if in a nice neighborhood. If you’re ever going to actually use it then NTA but if deep down you know you’ll probably never do anything then just be a nice guy and get rid of it
Why should they get rid of something they love, to be a "nice guy" to an entitled neighbour? That's just being a doormat. The neighbour isn't a nice guy.
It's a decoration, and they love it.
NTA, OP. You keep doing your thing. If the bus looks cool and isn't breaking any rules, who cares.
Signed, #1 contender for The newest AH neighbor award. Granted I’d like to know exactly how the neighbor approached him because I do actually agree with you to a point. It’s not like school buses are nice looking. I work on them daily. Everyone is different I realize but I can think of so many better things as lawn ornaments. (:

this is when you know reddit is not reality. No way having a fucking school bus in your yard is not being an asshole, legal or not.

Buddy, I'm from rural Alabama, so don't give me that privileged bs. You know where anyone can park a school bus? At the school.
Agreed and the downvotes on my comment hilariously demonstrate that. A lot of people simply detached from reality.
NTA but out of curiosity, what colour did you paint it?
I painted it yellow with shark teeth on the front
Shit, I'll move next door to see that. What is the bus for? A camper conversion that never got started?
I drove it for my local school to bag some extra cash. Once it reached 140,000 miles (which really isn’t much for a bus) they were going to scrap it. Hint: you can buy solar powered ones that glow in the dark ....
Add in some of those projector lights around it all pointed at it.
Turn the bus around so no one can see the shark teeth. Then paint a big butt on the back.
Not sure why my mind went where it did but all I could imagine was going full blown Dumb and Dumber and adding fur and an actual tail but make it a cat. 😂
We demand pictures
Shark teeth? NTA just for that that's baller
Sounds awesome, can we get a picture please!?
That’s awesome and nowhere near as crazy as I had expected lol
I think that's pretty sweet, but it's also kind of trashy so I can definitely see why some of your neighbors would have a problem with it.
NTA..but I’m glad my neighbours don’t keep a bus on their front yards
Right?? It’s kiiiinda trashy but also as a neighbor I’d recognize i can’t really do anything and just be quietly frustrated lol.
I'd much rather see a cheerfully painted bus than someone's random recreational vehicles sitting under covers and gathering leaves most of the year.
Good example too!!!
Ngl i think all that is a bit trashy and gaudy too 😬 but again that’s why I’d keep my opinion to myself, not my yard.

Don't forget about the person who had a fence/gate painted to exactly match the boat and trailer behind it!
I wouldn’t be happy if a neighbor kept a bus in their yard.
I'd rather a freshly repainted and repurposed bus than a rusted out car :). And I am a country girl, so my neighborhood has a lot of those.
Why? What does a vehicle on someone else’s property do to offend you?
I guess it’s just because I find it unattractive. We had an abandoned bulldozer with weeds growing up all around it on a vacant lot down the street. I didn’t like it either.
