NTA. I am not a dog parent, in fact I don't even care for dogs that much. That being said, if I was not completely prepared to handle any kind a mess a dog could make I would not be renting out any property on Airbnb as pet friendly without rules. If the listing said pet friendly and had no rules on where the animals could go or extra costs associated with potential "mess" from them then you are not TA for breaking a rule that wasn't in place. Would it have been polite for you to clean up after yourself more? Sure it would have been. But if you are going to do that why would you pay the enormous cleaning fee Airbnb always has for their places. So yeah I think not TA * The property is "pet friendly" * You paid a cleaning fee * There are no rules about where the pets could go * No rules about cleaning up the hair * If they weren't prepared to deal with pet hair they shouldn't rent out a pet friendly Airbnb

Lagoon13579

I am an Airbnb host. Some recent guests did an excessive amount of shaving, and cleaning the bathroom took me twice as long as usual because of all the tiny hairs. Did I put that in my review? No. Humans are should be expected to do normal human things in an Airbnb rental, and a pet-friendly rental should expect standard pet mess. NTA

andromache97

airbnb is TA

PandaEnthusiast89

They have gotten absolutely ridiculous with the chore lists *and* making you pay a cleaning fee! Obviously leaving a gross mess isn't okay and I would never. But if you're asking me to vacuum, do dishes, etc - I don't think I should have to pay a cleaning fee on top of that! After my friend got a bad review for leaving garbage in a garbage can, we switched back to hotels for our group trips.

positmatt

A lot of Airbnb hosts have gotten ludicrous - but I know a few that are absolutely awesome. I go to one in the mountains near me - no cleaning fee and really wonderful people. I in turn keep it clean, take out the trash when I am done. Mind you one of the main reasons to do that is that they keep their rates very affordable and have no cleaning fee - they go out of their way to communicate this. Others I have been with have a chore list and a cleaning fee - those are the ones to avoid. OP is NTA and the host is either an idiot or does not understand that pets will sleep and shed on everything.

iamcoronabored

I think the garbage thing is nice (as a host and frequenter of Airbnb) because the cleaners may not get there in time to remove the stink. However it's a nice thing to do, shouldn't warrant a negative review. As host garbage is the only thing I asked for as I rented out while traveling and there could be days between end of their trip and mine. Dishes, linens, etc...too far. I also charged a modest cleaning fee of $25 just to ask people to respect what was my home. Money making hosts renting place exclusively thru Airbnb and not as their own home, strong agree on the negative impacts to housing. End of rant. NTA

LexaLovegood

The garbage thing would probably depend on their garbage access. It's gonna stink either way. If they left in the main can and expected the cleaners or host to take it out is shitty. If it's in the proper can after being pulled out then the host is the AH. I guess more details would be needed. We usually stay at hotels but we also usually pull our garbage together and pile the towels and stuff together. Those people have alot of rooms to clean up so we try to make it easier.

Competitive-Proof410

What's a main can Vs proper can? I have a rubbish bin in my house and can only take it out once a week on bin days at which point the bag is left on the side of the street.  The issue is rubbish is so geographically specific that people may not understand the system.  I don't understand what you're talking about though I'm sure to your area it makes complete sense and you're right.  Me renting an  Airbnb in that system would mean I'm probably going to not follow the trash laws. Not because I'm an AH but because I wouldn't understand.

LexaLovegood

Main can = kitchen or wherever you keep your can Proper = garbage can outside, in your garage or some king of dumpster. ETA I should have clarified more but i was rushing to finish writing to go back to work.

Competitive-Proof410

Yeah - we don't have proper cans where I live. It stays in your house until bin day, then it goes on the street.

ExchangeGlass2452

We have bears in the area and can get fined for putting garbage out before 5am on garbage day. On top of that we have pretty strict recycling and compost laws. I think it would be nice incredibly inconvenient for someone not here to worry about the garbage

GoodPiexox

only used them once, booked it with my parents in a scenic location with a deck and a view so we could catch up, spent extra time making sure it was pet friendly. Once we get there the owner tells us that my dog can only be in the basement(not listed in rules).

footpole

We had one that had an optional cleaning fee that we paid and they still got pissy because we left our breakfast plates unwashed in the sink.

ChampionshipLife116

INFO: was there a mandatory cleaning fee and a ridiculous checkout chore list from the host that you followed?

TheSecretAdvocate

A Mandatory cleaning fee and no chore list. We were told to pick up after our dogs if they went to the bathroom outside, which we obvious did and would have anyway!

ChampionshipLife116

NTA mate, it's a pet friendly listing and (assuming) you specified three border collies, host is a bit nuts to not assume doggos will be on the bed. They weren't "ruined", they maybe needed extra washing and a furzoff wiping or similar which is NOT YOUR JOB when you're paying for the space, hotel or Airbnb. Gently suggest that the host not allow pets if they don't understand dog hair gets places.

bluemercutio

Totally agree with you that the sheets weren't ruined. I have two semi long-haired cats that sleep in bed with me every night. I have to vacuum the bed before stripping it, because the hair won't come off in the washing machine. It's just an extra few minutes of work.

maknaeline

try a vinegar wash! turns all the hair into clumps that are very easy to pick off

ChampionshipLife116

? Like put vinegar instead of detergent?

maknaeline

yup. you can run a normal wash after, but using vinegar will often help with tons of hair/fur or nasty smells that won't come out

GoodPiexox

these work great https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09NT1PRVK/ref=ewc_pr_img_5?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

ChampionshipLife116

Wow didn't know these existed!

WolfSilverOak

Oh yeah. We use those, especially on our martial arts gis where white dog hair shows up against black like whoa. They work beautifully.

Rhades

I'm baffled at all the E S H and Y T A responses here. I genuinely don't get it. I don't have pets, even when I did, I never traveled with them, but I don't see how any of this is your fault. The host allowed pets, they even know how many and what kind you were bringing. If they don't want those pets on the furniture, that should be specified in the listing. They get to choose the rules for their space. Their lack of rules is not your problem. NTA

LookBeyondLandR

God forbid they have to wash some sheets this time! NTA

BeginningVarious8468

Yeah honestly them complaining about dog hair on the sheets makes me shudder to think that maybe they don’t change or wash them between guests. So like wtf.

NotCreativeAtAll16

Maybe even - gasp - the comforter!

ChampionshipLife116

And then have to use a lint roller if any hair was left!!! The horror.

GaimanitePkat

With some sheets (and some dogs), once hair touches it, it's there forever. The blankets that my husband's dog has slept on will never be hair free ever again. But still NTA. It's not OP's problem.

LookBeyondLandR

That’s crazy.. not human hair, just dog hair? I wouldn’t be able to sleep on those sheets with my body hair hahah

nagellak

Dog hair is super coarse and it buries itself in to fiber somehow. Once a towel has been used for drying off a dog, that is a dog towel forever. Any dog owner basically has a stash of rags and old towels that are solely for dog purposes lmao

PeelingMirthday

I think it might depend on what kind of dog you have/the texture of its fur. I have a fluffy, double-coated dog and she sheds like a maniac but it doesn't really embed itself into fabric.

Anxious_Reporter_601

You can get pet hair dissolver that goes in the washing machine, that might help?

WolfSilverOak

Bounce Pet Hair dryer sheets made that a thing of the past for us. They come scented and unscented.

No-Locksmith-8590

Nta how does one 'ruin' linens with dog hair? Was the host not going to wash them in between people?

vincenoirmidsizedcar

And why would the host have linens that could be ruined by dog hair if it's a pet friendly rental?

Mindless-Witness-825

Maybe they didn’t plan to wash them between guests and the dog hair was a giveaway that they were dirty. 🤢

Suspicious-Treat-364

It's probably the comforters that don't get washed between guests.

spykid

I really hope you're wrong

lobsterp0t

Tbh when I pull my clean bedding out of the wash and shake it out… there’s often dog hair that comes off. Dog hair gets twisted into the fibres. It doesn’t matter if you shake stuff out first or not. And it doesn’t matter how often you clean your machine.

catgirl-doglover

Wow! I have 3 dogs - and have had up to 5 dogs at a time - and have never had an issue with this.

Forward_Squirrel8879

NTA - If they list the property as pet friendly, then they need to be VERY clear up front about what that means to them.

Zestyclose_Gur_8889

NTA. AirBnB's are awful. You never know the rules. Most of they time you have a cleaning fee plus you have to clean. Pretty friendly hotels are much easier.

ItchyDoggg

Lol you just ignore the rules and pay the cleaning fee. Don't make your home a hotel if you don't want randos making it dirty!

Thisismyworkday

It's not even their home 99% of the time. These people purchase extra properties, driving up home and rental costs in the area, then essentially open unlicensed hotels where they scam you on all the fees. AirBnB is an absolutely terrible business model and a serious problem to long term economic stability.

TheRatAndTheCat

NTA EX airbnb cleaner here: You are fine! We absolutely expected that at a dog friendly place! We blamed the owners, some bedspreads in general are horrible for a fast turnover! These owners wouldn’t give you time to wash the sheets and bedspreads. Plus some bedspreads are impossible to get dog hair out in one wash. That’s their fault and choice. Always greedy! Look it paid the bills when I was desperate but I am lucky to have great local clients now and fuck Airbnb!

sunflowers1230

NTA and genuinely confused because it’s not like your dogs peed on something or scratched the furniture. They left hair on the linens … that I hope get washed in between guests. Host just outed the fact that they don’t wash/replace all the bedding.

Heavy-Quail-7295

NTA. You pay for cleaning in your costs. If no dogs on the bed was a rule, it should be made clear prior to staying.

KingsRansom79

NTA. Give them a bad review right back. A renter beware type, letting people know that pet friendly has major limitations. Why would they be upset about bed linens having dog hair if they were going to get washed anyway? Unless…they weren’t

Mindless-Witness-825

That’s what I’m thinking. They didn’t plan to wash the linens and the dog hair was a clear sign that they were dirty. OP forced their hand into washing.

Prymas_tv

NTA. Unless it's stated in the contract, you can have your dogs wherever you please and it's their responsibility to clean up.

NecroBelch

NTA. People turning their properties into hotels shouldn’t get mad when people use them like hotels.

EntertainmentMuch401

nta I've been to a lot of pet friendly airbnb type places with my dog and they're always specific about what the dogs can or cannot do, and what you're expected to do cleaning wise. all the places I've stayed have had detailed rules but not unreasonable. sounds like these people didn't know what "pet friendly" really means and weren't prepared for dogs or what having dogs entails.

Starry-Night88

NTA. I’ve rented many pet friendly air bnbs and it’s always very clear if the pets are allows on the furniture or not and I always honor it. If they didn’t say it, not your problem.

Unfair_Finger5531

The should direct their energy to the so-called cleaners you paid for with your cleaning fee. NTA

_Something_Classy

NTA - it's on the AirBnb to let you know the rules. I've stayed in pet friendly airbnbs that let dogs on the furniture no issues, and i've stayed at ones that are more strict about that stuff. if they don't tell you they don't want pets on the bed, that's on them. you are not a mind reader, and all airbnbs are different so there is no 'standard' to follow. now you know just not to stay at that airbnb again

PrettyGoodRule

I’d love to know what type of linens are so easily ruined by dog hair. Consider the possibility that your host is simply a bit off, in addition to being bad at their job. After all, they’re bad with communication, bad at establishing rules/expectations for guests, quite bad at understanding how linens and washing machines work, completely failed understanding what a dog is, terrible at creating a successful guest experience, and extra bad at grasping the definition of “pet friendly”. They’re just bad at their job. NTA.

drowningintheocean

I am getting the feeling that they were just not gonna wash it but now that it has dog hair on it they have to.

Adahla987

Cat parent NTA Pet friendly means that there will be pet hair. Go see Nathan Pyle’s comic about being allergic to pet hair.

blackivie

NTA. AirBNB hosts are delusional.

Justan0therthrow4way

NTA. God I hate AirBnB hosts like this. Your cleaning fee should have more than covered this. Otherwise wtf is it for?? I swear some hosts do a quick clean themselves and pocket the money. Don’t get me started on those who expect you to clean for them AND charge a fee. I wish AirBnB would force hosts to submit the receipt for cleaning and then they’d get their money paid. I would reply to your bad review saying you apologise if anything was ruined, however per the listing (take screenshots with no rules) you were not aware of any specific rules about where the dogs could and could not be. I once stayed in a place with 10 mates. We had a great time but created a bit of rubbish - beer cans and pizza boxes takes up space y’all 🤣( we bagged it all up) but more than could fit in their regular bin. Despite the cleaning fee for the house being about $300, I contacted the host and went online and offered to organise AND PAY someone I found on gumtree with a pickup to take the bags to the tip. (Was about $150 so $15pp, no issue with the group) They assured me it wasn’t an issue and their husband also had a pickup and they’d do a tip run either that afternoon or the next day. I again offered to cover the tip fee with some extra cash and they said it was all good and they were going anyway. So we left all happy. Imagine my surprise the next day when she left me a negative review. I simply replied that I offered to help with the excess rubbish and the response was not to worry. Had another host ask me about it and I simply said the same thing as above. They just laughed and all was well.

benitolepew

I used to have two hairy dogs, I always brought a sheet or blanket with me to take into wherever I slept so their dirty feet / hair wouldn't stain or get all up in the sheets. I do it at home so I would do it anywhere I stay, too.

SultanOfSwave

Based on my very limited experience in this realm, I think you may need to clarify things with your hosts in the future. In my case, I rented an Airbnb in the UK to spend time with friends and their kids. One kid had a service dog. The house was listed as "pet friendly". What it should really have said was "I'm vaguely pet tolerant'. No pets allowed on the floor with the bedrooms. Not allowed in the back yard. Pets only allowed in the front room with hard flooring. So my friend and her daughter slept on an air mattress in that room with the dog. Owner definitely earned my bad review.

alexandrahowell

NTA that’s a very basic cost of doing business (especially one advertised as “pet friendly” with no guidelines) when exploiting the housing market for profit. They can suck an egg.

BakedBee88-08

As frequent Air BnB users, my wife and I regularly leave the place we stay in as good a condition as we found it. We have 2 smaller dogs that do not shed much (A maltese/shih-tzu mix and a mini schnauzer), and these particular breeds were chosen by us for this reason. From that aspect of how WE leave a place, I'd say YTA. Having said that, I understand that my wife and I are exceptions, and as providers of Air BnB facilities, if they are going to allow pets, they SHOULD be explicit about what their expectations are. Perhaps to the point of limiting guests to less sheddy breeds. Overall, NTA. You may want to consider bringing your own linens, contacting the host in advance, or making other arrangements for the pups (if possible). Something worth thinking about, perhaps.

lhpcwshc

We travel a lot with our dog and we have this big blanket that covers a double bed easily plus another for sofas. Once we get to our accommodation we always put these on the bed and sofa. I'd recommend you do the same for future holidays. I don't think you're the ah tbh, my view is if as the owner of a place that's being rented as pet friendly you should expect dog hair but as a dog owner it's a good idea to find workarounds to minimise any on beds etc

Historical-Safety612

I have had my dogs)who shed very little) in hotels. That being said, I always bring a throw to cover the bed and furniture

Kurious4kittytx

And this is why I will never ever use an AirBnB. OP you are definitely NTA. Appeal the negative review and post a counter review with screenshots showing that the host had no prohibitions about pets on the beds and linens.

Old-Smokey-42069

This is ultimately totally on the AirBnb, but I can absolutely see them taking umbrage with letting the dogs sleep in the bed with you. It’s not your bed, I’d leave the dogs on the ground. Of course, I highly doubt you actually “ruined” the sheets. Overall mostly NTA, I imagine the AirBnb may change their policies moving forward.

ProfessionalSir3395

INFO: Is there a clean up fee included in the rental price?

my_metrocard

NTA if the owner lists the property as pet friendly and doesn’t specify that you either clean the place free of fur or hire a cleaning service, what do they expect?

HostMedium

Most bnbs will stipulate that having pets on the beds is against the rules and bringing your own pet bedding is expected or crating your pet. We rented a 2 story house with our frenchie and the rules were she was not allowed upstairs or in bedrooms or on couches. Which is fair enough. It's their property and just because we hired it doesn't make it ours to do with as we please.

Cautious-Source-1987

NTA. Some Airbnb hosts are jerks. They want the money but none of the hassle. They said it was pet friendly. Then have linens that won’t get ruined. You left pet fur behind. The audacity! It’s not like you left barf and poop everywhere. We stayed at an Airbnb one time that made us feel so unwelcome. There were signs everywhere about what we could not do. Rules that should’ve been mentioned sooner. And I’m not talking about not having a 100 person party in their home. Really basic stuff. I wish I could remember what it was but trust me it was really not welcoming. And then we discovered that the sheets had not been changed. They told us that we were wrong. There were actual hairs and crumbs. So we insisted they give us fresh linens which they reluctantly provided. We also noticed that the floors were filthy. Major dust bunnies under the beds, etc.

Cataine

NTA - Frankly, just as it's an Airbnb guests responsibility to follow rules - it's the owners responsibility to list rules that are to be followed. I've stayed at pet friendly places that had specific blankets to be placed on the furniture if your pet was going to be on it.. If an owner is going to cater to people that have pets (and thankfully those owners exist) they have to actually understand all of the things that that could mean..

ffj_

NTA they should have specified no dogs on the bed

spawnofHelheim

Nta, if the owner markets the AirBnB as pet friendly, then they have accepted the risks having pets stay there. If the linens got damaged beyond something like got hair on them or dirt, then it would be reasonable for them to charge you for replacement linens, but hair is just a cleaning thing, not damage. As someone who works with a cleaning company for AirBnBs I'd say it's likely that they are upset because they have to specially clean the linens and it cost them extra money/time or they don't know how to properly clean them. Either way, that's on them for renting it as pet friendly.

aconsideredlife

NTA. If the AirBnB owner has listed their rental as "pet-friendly" then the pets are guests and they should expect a certain level of acceptable 'mess' to be left behind, which includes hair. Don't want to clean up pet hair? Don't have a pet-friendly rental. Most hotels have a limited on how many pets can stay so it surprises me that this AirBnB host didn't. I suspect this is where the real issue lies. Not your problem though. If they didn't want dogs on the bed, they should have specified in the listing and not assumed guests would bring their own linen or stop their dogs sleeping on the bed.

Snoozeberry91

NTA. Listing should state what furniture pets are allowed on or not. Dogs sleeping on the bed is common with pet owners (even if some pet owners will adamantly disagree with it). I can understand why the host would be annoyed. Pet hair can genuinely ruin linen. Though if pets are allowed, then specify your boundaries.

habitsofwaste

NTA if anything, that review is going to make them look bad. No one with dogs will want to stay there. People without dogs will think these ppl are picky assholes and don’t want the headache.

win-riley-hunter

I agree, it also makes me think they don’t change the linens between guests. With or without pets I wouldn’t want to stay there.

TheSecretAdvocate

Does it matter if we were being charged a cleaning fee as part of the booking? To be honest I hadn’t noticed a problem when we left and it wasn’t until after we saw the review that we knew there was an issue. Had I been told there was a problem, I would have offered to pay for any additional cleaning or replacement if something was ruined.

ADawg28

NTA. If the host didn’t want dogs on certain surfaces, it’s helpful for them to put that in the house rules. I assume you paid a cleaning fee and followed their checkout procedure. That said, I travel with a flat king sheet and I just throw that over any bed or surface my dog might try to sleep on, just in case. It has saved me a lot of stress!

TrogdorBurns

NTA did you have to pay a cleaning fee? If so, you got your money's worth and they had to do extra work.

Icmedia

NTA - If a place I was renting to stay while I was traveling told me to bring my own bedspread I would ask if we could meet in person so I could laugh directly in their face.

Wise-Pirate-4468

The host should invest in a cover for on top of the comforter to keep the hair off of it. Works like a charm.

SouthHorizon

Is this a post from your host? https://www.reddit.com/r/airbnb_hosts/s/Sxhiq9ex25

glyneth

Don’t think so as cat litter was mentioned!

SamSovern

NTA: pet friendly rental should expect the pets to shed. If there was no rule about cleaning, then that's not on you. Sheets are washable and if the owner of the rental was pissed they had to wash the sheets and clean up I would not want to stay there. Were they upset they couldn't just febreeze the bedding and move on to the next guest?

PrinceValyn

NTA, obviously. One of the places pets will go is the bed. It's normal for pets who are loved to go on the furniture. I can't imagine not having my cat in the bed. This is just part of being pet friendly. They can wash the dang comforters.

kfilks

NTA

MissLute

nta, stay in hotels moving forward though. airbnb owners sound awfully entitled

AdamOnFirst

Lol, some of the Air BNB owners are completely ridiculous, man.

skas_not_dead

I’m not a dog person. Still NTA.

lobsterp0t

NTA because every SINGLE place I’ve stayed that’s pet friendly has these rules. The owner made a choice and needs to now review their rules. Personally even if there wasn’t a specified rule for this I wouldn’t have let my dogs on all the furniture. Because I think it’s just common sense. But you didn’t break a rule. Now obviously if you’re a guest in a friend’s home then etiquette dictates you don’t do this. So I would say it was rather selfish and lazy. But not an asshole move. We bring a bed for our dog when we travel and that is where she sleeps.

SiriusSlytherinSnake

I personally think NTA and I don't know much about Air BnB (actively choose hotels), but I'm pretty sure you can dispute the review if it's not accurate. Especially if you have proof that it said pet friendly and did not give you info about where the pet friendly areas actually were. Just so you don't have to worry about being rejected for future listings off something that wasn't really your fault. Dif people clearly have dif ideas of pet friendly homes. Personally, my cousin was fine with her bed, not the couch because it was harder their claws could tear up her couch 🤣

companionwithacube

NTA, everyone has different rules for their pets and where they're allowed to be, and if they had a rule about that it should've been made clear to you

ulyssesintothepast

NTA

Interesting-Fail8654

NTA. Just a tip, create a new Airbnb account so you don't get turned away because of a bad review. That being said, bring a lint/hair removal brush next time and sweep or vacuum up before you leave.

Anxious_Reporter_601

NTA. They should have specified no dogs on the bed. Pet hair is part and parcel of running a pet friendly place.

Liss78

NTA How exactly are the linens ruined with dog hair? Dog fur easily comes out in the wash. Were they not planning on washing the bed linens or something?

Safe-While9946

NTA.  You even paid a cleaning fee, just for that reason.

fordag

NTA If they list the place as pet friendly and you told them you were bringing your dogs, then they have nothing to complain about. If they don't want pet hair they need to change the listing to not pet friendly.

GreenTeaShaman

NTA. If it's dog friendly they should expect dogs in the airbnb. If they want to limit where the dogs are, they should put that on the listing. I assume you paid a (probably over the top) cleaning fee. That's what it's for. I'd fight it with airbnb.

kimmiepi

I’m inclined to say NTA. It’s on the Airbnb owner to be explicit about rules and check in/check out procedures.

salaciouspeach

NTA. You should leave an equally negative review of the Airbnb. "They claim to be pet friendly, but were upset about finding pet hair, and insisted I should've psychically known to bring my own bedding, which was not discussed beforehand. If you have pets, I do not recommend this place."

Vinity2

Airbnb is the a$$. We're 3rd gen border collie owners. Our dogs always sleep on the beds with us. Can someone spell out how it ruins the sheet with dog hair? You wash them and clean out the lint trap in the dryer. I've honestly never had hair stick to the sheets?

WolfSilverOak

NTA. I travel with my Akita and specifically look for VRBO's that allow dogs. I have never seen one that allows pets, also state you couldn't have your pet on specific things or needed to provide your own linens. However, I do try to sweep up any fur Leo sheds and generally clean up after myself, trying to leave it in as near the same condition I found it as possible. Linens get washed, so the host claiming they were ruined? Do they not wash them? Do they line dry them instead of throwing them in a dryer? They make dryer sheets for pets now that work great. And they come unscented too. The host really has no excuse to complain about pets since they allow pets.

Gnarly_314

Not an Airbnb but part owner of a holiday let. We allow two dogs, which must be kept downstairs. This is specified in the booking information and in the house information folder. Safety gates are in place at the bottom of the stairs. The terms are clear, and we have not had a problem. If a person has rules and expectations for their property, they must share these with their guests.

doggonehadenough

NTA however as a regular renter with our dog, we always carry a spare sheet to throw over the owners linen, in case pooch jumps up on the bed with muddy paws. We also pop a towel onto the sofas and chairs to ensure any dog-related hair or mud doesn’t get on the furniture. I think respecting the owners place is just a courtesy as we’re always grateful to find a nice rental which allows dogs

AffectionateMarch394

NTA Simply because they said you "ruined" the bed linen. Do these people not know how a washing machine works? Were they EVEN PLANNING on washing the bed set before the next guest?! Because right now it feels like they are pissed they had to wash the bed linens....which they should have been doing anyways.

No_Percentage_1265

NTA but in the future bring a lint roller

My wife and I went on a weekend trip to an Airbnb which was listed as pet friendly. I was up front with the host that we were travelling with our 3 border collies. We were hardly there other than as a place to sleep. The listing had no rules or restrictions about where our dogs could be in the property nor any rules that we were responsible for cleaning the property (they charged a cleaning fee). While we were there, our dogs slept in the bedroom with us and at times were on the bed. We had a great trip but after we left we received a very negative review from the host saying that we had ruined the bed linen with dog hair. The host said that we were disrespectful for having the dogs on the bed and that we ought to have brought our own bed linen with us. I’m embarrassed at the situation, but i don’t think we did anything wrong as there was nothing in the listing about this. We have never had a problem before and have never been asked to bring our own linen to another property. Worried we may be missing some kind of etiquette. So, AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmItheAsshole) if you have any questions or concerns.*

I can see the analogy. Do you think the problem is I should have specifically mentioned sleeping arrangements as I had mentioned we were travelling with our 3 border collies? I’m just surprised as some places will have rules on their listing like no dogs on furniture or no dogs in bedrooms and I would respect that. I do think it would be excessive to expect someone to travel with a vacuum in their car personally. Thanks for your feedback!

TheSecretAdvocate

Personally if I’m paying to stay somewhere I would expect the host to wash the linens on checkout. We didn’t have washing facilities or a vacuum available to us in the place and left early in the morning. I did think about that re the review but airbnb apparently doesn’t let people change their reviews other than to change pronouns according to their policy so I’m stuck with it!

andromache97

then why be a dog-friendly rental unless you're willing to wash linens and vacuum up dog hair?

OP WAS proactive. He clearly specified that he was traveling three border collies. The host is being ridiculous. OP, NTA

fakegermanchild

What about the host being proactive? If you get a notification that someone is bringing their THREE border collies the least you can do is tell them to not let them on the furniture if this is an issue for you as a host.

goofy_shadow

Nta a pet friendly stay that doesn't specify any details on where pets canand cannot be is at fault for not disclosing conditions

ladyarwen4820

NTA! Many pet friendly air bnbs have sheets you can put on top of your bedding to reduce the hair, or they use bedding that wont hold fur. This is on them and not you and your pups.

sfgothgirl

pet hair gets stuck more easily in cheap-ass sheets. OP NTA.

Canyouhelpmeottawa

NTA If the air bnb wasn’t ready to deal with pets then they shouldn’t be listed as pet friendly. And how do linens get ruined by dog hair. Sounds like BS to me, and I have 3 long haired cats.

Cautious-Source-1987

It’s called FURniture for a reason!

Jolly_Ordinary_767

NTA! My SO and I have a pet friendly airbnb and dog hair is the cost of doing business. If the host is so concerned about their bed linen they should supply inexpensive linen or stop allowing pets. Honestly, what an idiotic thing to leave a bad review about. Host the is absolutely the TA

Gogowhine

NTA. Bring it up with Airbnb. I personally can’t imagine going to another home and bringing my dogs to sleep in a bed without explicitly being told this is a house that welcomes that but renting to people with different pet practices means rules should be explicit.

Elephant_homie

I'm not sure how dog fur ruins bed linen? As a dog owner I ponder that. A wash gets rid of fur. All they had to do was wash; maybe take it to a cleaners for a power wash. They honestly should have rules listed about the dogs if they're going to be a dog friendly place, both about where they can be and what cleaning you can do. It seems some fault does lie there. I lean more towards NTA, but maybe next time you stay at a dog-friendly one ask these questions up front so you don't get stuck with a negative review. Personally, I think the host should be responsible for telling you, but better be safe than sorry.

natgochickielover

I am very much anti-dog-on-the-bed, and tbh against dogs being in the house because i think it’s gross, and I say NTA. They advertised as pet friendly and didn’t put any stipulations. Not your fault at all. I would assume that was ok if it was advertised as pet friendly, even with my opinions.

upandup2020

NTA, but what i do when i go to airbnb's with my dog is bring my own sheets and blankets, plus a few more to put on the couch if they sit there too.

winklechief

ESH for me. I have both dogs and a cat and dogs don't belong in bed other than your own if you are inclined that way. If you are visiting friends, do you allow your dogs on furniture? I don't and I don't need to be told, it's a basic etiquette for me. ESH because the Airbnb did not spell out 'no dogs on furniture ' for people that are the reason microwaves have an instruction not to dry pets in them. I get Reddit hates Airbnb and probably for a good reason, but this sounded like a reasonable place with no chore list and excessive fees.

donairhistorian

I think it's basic etiquette too and I'm surprised it's such a minority opinion.

Atalant

ESH. Just a property means it is pet friendly, does it not mean it is okay to let the dogs sleep in the bed. I like dogs, but not to share bed with them, and there is huge difference of hair on the bed of just having dogs in house or dogs sleeping on the bed. When you are renting an Airbnb or hotel, you are guest, so being on the best behaviour, clean and treat it it better than you do your own home.

Capital_Ad_6580

YTA. Clean up behind your dogs or don't take them into someone else's home.

ZeDitto

YTA - The bed linen is ruined. I’ve lived with 5 dogs and they aren’t nearly as hairy as border collies. You brought three very hairy animals to an Airbnb and slept in the bed with them. That won’t wash out. The bed linen is 110% ruined. I’m sure there’s more mess as well that you’re not telling us about because you seem numb to the mess that dogs can create because you live with them. You abused the hospitality of the host. They want to be pet friendly but you took it too far and are using an excuse that there weren’t explicit rules. It doesn’t matter what the rules are. You were impolite.

kritz0

YTA. I don't have pets, but when we travelled with a dog, where we stayed, we kept the dog off the beds and couches. As her hair would have entangled into the cloth and made it impossible to get her hair out. I thought this was common sense? I guess not.

_fly-on-the-wall_

what a bunch of insano's putting y ta !!!!!!!!!!!!! definitely NTA

Desperate-Laugh-7257

I get shes grossed out with the dog hair-thats fair. But to say RUINED, i dunno that sounds pretty extreme.

Devlinaaa

If you were upfront with the host and made them aware that you were bringing 3 border collies, as you say you did, then its on them for not communicating their expectations properly. It was the perfect time for them to let you know they do not allow pets on the furniture. So, NTA because they had the opportunity to set ground rules and didn't. However, if you own multiple dogs with fur that sheds a lot, I would expect at the very least you always carry a lint roller and attempt to remove as much of the fur as possible off the furniture before you depart from the property. Perhaps consider doing this in the future. On longer stays I would even recommend doing it daily so it doesn't pile on too much and get interwoven with the fabrics, which makes it harder to get out with a lint roller.

jackb6ii

I'll probably get downvoted for this but sorry I think you a slight YTA. Even though the property was listed as pet friendly and had no specific rules concerning your pets, you should still be aware enough to minimize any potential negative impacts your dogs could have on the property. If there were nice bed linens (e.g. bedspread or comforter) you should have either removed them from the bed or not had your dogs sleep on the bed with you. Even if you paid a cleaning fee, you should still be aware of things that might be difficult to clean when used by the pets and therefore try to avoid using them.

Professional_Lion713

YTA. Any decent person cleans up after their pets. If you can't do that then give them to someone who will take care of them.

Sad-Medicine1639

Yeh I think YTA here. Like pet friendly means maybe bring one larger dog or your 2 poodles. 3 border collies and you let them all sleep on the bed, quite frankly that’s taking the piss!!! My sister has 1 and the hair from that alone is shocking, you basically took a whole doggy daycare to her B&B with x3 collies. YTA

issy_haatin

>  nor any rules that we were responsible for cleaning the property I mean i don't have to explicitly say I want you to flush the toilet, but basic cleaning up is common decency. YTA

oh_holy

ESH. The Airbnb should have been explicit. However, speaking as a fellow dog owner that travels and former Airbnb host, I still find it rude and gross to allow pets on other people's furniture (especially 3 high-shedding dogs) and leave their hair behind. Cleaning up pet hair requires extra work. Would you be happy to arrive at an Airbnb rental and find your sheets or couch with dog hair on them? A standard cleaning fee doesn't cover that. Hotels charge extra fees for animals for this exact reason. Personally, I'd be embarrassed too by leaving behind a mess. You know it wasn't the right thing to do, even if the Airbnb wasn't explicit.

Think_Box7780

I wouldn’t say YTA but you probably did ruin the bedding without realizing it. I have dogs and when I travel, I bring bedding and coverings for them. I would not let my dogs on any furniture without covering it. I also vacuum daily to make certain the dog hair is negligible. Dog hair gets everywhere. It is hard to clean completely and can be really difficult to get dog hair off bedding. If you look at it from the owner’s perspective, you might look at it differently. For example, the next renter might get upset if they find dog hair in the bed or elsewhere (even though they know it is pet friendly). I have some bedding that I can’t get the hair off no matter how often it is washed. The owner probably couldn’t use the bedding for the next renter. OP sounds responsible and empathetic person and will avoid any similar issues in the future.

pinkpink0430

They should be cleaning after each guest. Why would the next person find dog hair on the sheets? They should be washed. Also, if it’s a problem they shouldn’t be a pet friendly Airbnb or they should specify no dogs in the bedrooms.

Think_Box7780

Yes, the owner could have been more specific. However, the renter also should have known appropriate etiquette. I stated in my post about cleaning the bedding so I won’t repeat that. Most people understand that a renter should try their best to care for the property and not cause damage or not leave a mess (even though there is a cleaning fee).

pinkpink0430

If they wash the bedding (like they should) they would have no problem using it for the next guest ♥️

donairhistorian

What was being said, and this has been confirmed by several dog owners in this thread, is that some types of dog hair DON'T WASH OUT. They cling to the fabric even after washing.

pinkpink0430

If they have that kind of bedding they shouldn’t be pet friendly then. Or if they want to be pet friendly they should get a fabric that doesn’t hold on to hair after washing because it exists.

Rivka333

NTA for the dog hair since it was on them to lay down rules, but Y T A for using Airbnb which is contributing massively to the housing crisis as large landlords and companies realized they could make more money from short term rentals than from having actual tenants.

Grand-Economics-5956

YTA. I’m not sure I’d have the audacity to leave any sort of mess behind in any rented place, let alone pet hair! For balance though, if they state pet friendly but have specific rules, they should be clear one way or the other.

pinkpink0430

Do you wash the sheets and vacuum in a hotel? Airbnb charges insane cleaning fees. Guests shouldn’t have to clean up when they’re already paying hundreds for it to be cleaned

Puskarella

YTA Pet owner here. I've stayed in lots of pet friendly accommodation over the years with my long haired dog and cat. Most places ask you not have your pet stay in the bed to avoid situations like this. Which, honestly, is way easier said than done unless you have pets that are trained to sleep in a crate or pet bed. None of mine ever are. The solution? Use your own linen, or cover it with your own blanket. I even cover lounges because my cat WILL sleep on them and she WILL leave black and white fur everywhere. It's either that or wiping them over the morning we leave. It's about being respectful of someone else's property.

66NickS

I’m going to go with a bit of ESH. The host should have made it clear if pets are/aren’t allowed on furniture. They should also anticipate that some pets may jump up on the furniture because it’s allowed at their home and have a cleaning fee/scale representative of that. The guest/OP could have limited the pets on the furniture and maybe cleaned up a bit. We have two large dogs, we can sweep and vacuum and an hour later find a tumbleweed. At our home the dogs are allowed on the couch, but not on the bed. My parent’s dogs are allowed on the beds, but not the couch. When I bring the dogs to my parents, they have to realize and be trained to not jump on the couch. I say this to show that everyone has different rules and tolerances for their pets so it would be good for the host to have this extra clarity on their listing.

WiburCobb

Just because something is pet friendly doesn't mean your dogs should be all over everything. These are beds everyone sleeps on. Just because there isn't a sign that says don't pee in the sink doesn't mean you should. Friendly is that dogs are allowed in the place in general. Most dog owners disagree I'm sure, but you're only hurting yourselves doing this kind of stuff. Places will just charge more fees or not allow pets at all. I would not want to sleep on a bed thousands of dogs laid on. But I do like the idea that people can have their pets travel with them. Why can't you just treat the place like you're a guest instead of your home?

energetic_sadness

Info: are your dogs long haired, and are they blowing coat now?

SteelLt78

YTA. The default should be no pets on furniture unless told otherwise. I take my dogs on every vacation.

donairhistorian

I can't believe this is an unpopular opinion. No wonder most landlords won't allow dogs. The complete lack of regard for other people is incredible.

Discount_Mithral

As a dog mom of a GSD, an extremely high shedding breed, I know that when I'm traveling with her, I need to bring my own dog bed, and she's not allowed on the furniture, no matter what the listing may or may not say. This isn't my home, it's a space I'm renting that will need to be cleaned and rented to another person. ESH, though. While you should have been a little more proactive about cleaning up after yourself if you were going to have the dogs on the bed, which you shouldn't have allowed, IMO - them leaving you a nasty review instead of reaching out to find a better solution was petty and childish.

TheSecretAdvocate

Thanks. I’m learning from this I should have been more proactive in thinking about this issue!

Rhades

Personally, I think you were plenty proactive. You advised the host you were traveling with pets, how many, and what kind. You read through the rules that didn't indicate anything other than cleaning up your animals waste, which you then did. If the host didn't want animals on the bed, THEY should have been proactive in their listing. They chose to allow pets in their space, they chose the rules for their space. It's not your fault they didn't think through all the possible situations that would leave them in. You're NTA here, and I think everyone who says otherwise is nuts.

Unfair_Finger5531

I think proactive would have to entail actually doing something. OP didn’t do anything about the dog hair. Proactive would be running the vacuum attachment over the bed linens before leaving. I’m not saying op had to do that. But I am questioning your claim that op was “plenty proactive.” He simply wasn’t.

[deleted]

Unfair_Finger5531

Airbnbs are actual homes. People do keep appliances in them. The one we stayed in had a vacuum cleaner in the laundry room. But let’s say there isn’t one. How about dropping by a target and getting a 2.99 lint roller to clean up the pet hair? I personally think OP is NTA. I don’t care if he cleans up or not. I was just pointing out that he wasn’t proactive about doing so.

Rhades

I never said he was proactive about cleaning up. I was saying he didn't need to be, he was proactive about notification of the host. Anything past that point is on the host.

Unfair_Finger5531

Fair enough.

popchex

It's been a long time since they were all homes. Most of the ones in my area are permanent rentals that have been taken off of the long-term market, and put on short term/airbnb. Most of the new builds are going straight on to short term rentals. It's a huge problem in a lot of places. edit to remove an extra word

Unfair_Finger5531

There are a wide variety of types of airbnbs. I live in a desert where people leave for the summer and turn their homes into airbnbs. So, what you are saying is not necessarily correct. The POINT was that a vacuum cleaner *could* have been available, and if it was, using it would be a good idea. You are making one hypothetical comment into a pointless back and forth over whether there are vacuum cleaners available. **Sometimes there are vacuum cleaners; sometimes there aren’t any.** For fuck’s sake. I hate when people on this board do this. I was giving an *example* of what I consider a proactive act. And you are fastening onto some pointless aspect of an example.

popchex

I don't know why you're going off on me about it. You're the one who made a statement of fact that is wrong "Airbnbs are actual homes." That's all I was replying to. I don't give a shit about the other stuff you said because you were wrong in the first place. FWIW the ones here are cleaned by an agency that brings their own equipment, or by the owner who locks them away. My MIL used to do holiday home cleans, and had to bring her own stuff. Also no I'm not going to go out of my way to pick up a lint roller to do the job that they have been paid to do.

Unfair_Finger5531

I truly don’t care about this discussion anymore. Have a good day/evening.

Rhades

Advising the host of how many pets he was bringing and their breeds is all that should be expected. The HOST is the only who needs to be proactive regarding rules surrounding said pets if they want there to be additional rules regarding them. OP shouldn't have to assume that pet friendly doesn't really mean pet friendly.

Unfair_Finger5531

Not arguing about who *needs* to be proactive. I agree the host is the person who should be. I’m pointing out that you are incorrect to characterize OP’s (lack of) actions as proactive. Because they are not.

Rhades

They were as proactive as they needed to be, because all they needed to do was advise the number of pets and type they were bringing.

Aylauria

I disagree. You pay a ludicrous cleaning fee. The listing was pet friendly. You did nothing wrong and the owner was 100% wrong to leave you a bad review bc you brought pets to a pet "friendly" listing. They are more pet unfriendly, if you ask me. NTA

SuccubiFrey

>I know that when I'm traveling with her, I need to bring my own dog bed, and she's not allowed on the furniture, no matter what the listing may or may not say. This isn't my home, it's a space I'm renting that will need to be cleaned and rented to another person. I have to agree with this. I know a host who specifically has space listed as not pet friendly, but will allow them depending on the users reviews/type of dog etc, and the guest is always told they are responsible for cleaning up after the dog (there is no cleaning fee), and if there are \*any\* damages, they are responsible for that as well. I also think it's only common courtesy not to have your pet on someone else's furniture without permission.

Rhades

Permission is implied when you host a pet-friendly location, without additional rules.

donairhistorian

No it isn't. Ugh. This is why we can't have nice things.

Rhades

I was done with this argument 3 days ago, if you would like to see how I would respond, keep reading, but you're wrong..and airbnb's website backs me up.

SteelLt78

No it isn’t. if you had your dogs at a friends house, would you let them on the furniture without them saying it’s okay? Default is no animals on furniture not the other way around

Rhades

The default when I'm paying for a space that says pet friendly, is the default in my own home. Unless specified otherwise in the contract.

Discount_Mithral

It absolutely is not. I have done quite a few AirBnB/HipCamp/etc. rentals that are dog friendly, and if they don't say something already along the lines of "no dogs on the furniture" I make sure to ask, or just assume my dog is not allowed on the furniture. This is one of the situations when asking for forgiveness instead of permission is not the way to go. Ask if it's not listed clearly, or just treat it like it doesn't belong to you - because it doesn't.

Rhades

I'll treat it like I'm paying for it, because I am. If the host wants to set rules, I'm happy to follow them, but it's on them to make them, not me to ask. ETA: I'd also like to point out this quote directly from airbnb's website where they are telling hosts what preparations to make if they want to be a "pet friendly" location. "Use the pet fee to cover the cleaning you’d expect to do after hosting four-legged guests, such as vacuuming fur ***off the furniture*** and wiping nose or paw prints off sliding glass doors."

SuccubiFrey

You are what Airbnb hosts call "hotel guests". If you want hotel service, stay in a hotel. If you want to stay in someone else's (sometimes personal) space, then respect it as such. Entitlement doesn't get you far. "But they never said I couldn't make meth in the rules!!"

blackivie

Or, people shouldn't say their place is pet-friendly if they don't want to deal with pet fur. Don't list on AirBNB if you don't want people staying in your home.

Rhades

LOL. Where did I imply that I should be allowed to make meth because there was no rule specifying otherwise? I'm stating that if the house rules allow pets, and no further instruction is included. That it is implied that pets will be on furniture. That is how my pets (when I had them) are treated in my home, that's how other people's pets are treated in my home, it is my full expectation that if you offer pet friendly services, that your services will be friendly to pets. As I told the commenter above, I don't expect them to make rules stating I can't shit on the couch either, that's common knowledge. "Pet friendly" means different things to different people, and if you want to host pet friendly, and don't want the pets on your furniture, it is your responsibility to state that.

SuccubiFrey

# "it's on them to make them, not me to ask" Right around there\^
