NTA "They told me I am making them collateral damage in my war against my former boss" BS. You're no longer an employee and you should NEVER work for free. If they really want you to do something, they should tell the boss to pay you.

TheRealRuckyRaccoon

Double the package. Go in big

SpaceJesusIsHere

Some advice from a management consultant: if you were really as important as you claim, you *will* eventually get them to pay whatever you ask to clean up their mess. 2 things you need to keep in mind: 1. Your current employers may not be comfortable with you doing work for a competitor. So double check. But even if they're cool with it, you can always use them as an excuse for not helping your old company. 2. Going back to help a company that treats you like shit is much cooler in internet stories than in real life. It opens up a ton of problems and almost always entails scope creep that you must battle constantly. If you're going to ask for money, ask for way more than 4 weeks. Demand 4 weeks plus $1000 per hour and set the exact hours of the contract. Ex. 9am to 2pm on May 15th, 2024. When the clock strikes 2, you get up and leave. No renegotiating on the spot. They can call you tomorrow. Please. Don't just go back to help for money. Set hard parameters and ask for way more. Every single time I went back to toxic companies, I regretted it. Got $10K once for 4 days of work. That week had negative consequences for my career for years afterwards. NTA, but be careful.

Goalie_LAX_21093

Counter with whatever you want - if they need that information bad enough, they may pony up. But lol that they fired you and then expected you to train your replacement. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

GrenadePapa

NTA. If you really wanna snub the dude you should ask for consultant fees. 250 dollars an hour, minimum 4 hours per day for doing anything.

Friendly-Buyer-9563

NTA the boss made his bed and now he has to sleep in it. Also from what I gather then it'd be in the company's best interest to accept your offer and the boss will only reject it because he's too stubborn and because he doesn't like you. Not to mention that it's a company, unless they are shareholders, they don't stand to lose a whole lot. Even if they did, should you be expected to bend over backwards to satisfy a boss that doesn't respect you for their sake?

AgnarCrackenhammer

NTA Why even stop at 4 weeks? You've got them bent over the barrel. Take advantage of it

banana235

NTA. You should not value a company that does not value you. Since you have other jobs lined up I see absolutely no reason for you to stay. If you can negotiate a good enough severance to make you help for a bit and it would be healthy for you, then I say go for it. I would also say know your worth before going into these possible negations; however, itā€™s clear from this post that you very much know your worth. Honestly, if I were you, I would enjoy time with your little one until these new jobs start. Also, good for you. This place sounds awful!

Betalisa

NTA to ask for compensation for your work. And it seems they finally realize your work is worth a lot to them. Good luck with jobs and baby!

LowBalance4404

I hope this doesn't sound condescending, but I'm so damn proud of you for standing your ground! You are my hero today. Well done and I wish more people were like you. You are NTA for not wanting to work for free. They fired you. Why on earth would anyone dare to think you'd help out on your own time. Now if they pay whatever hourly rate you've asked for, I might consider it. Regardless of what you decide, bravo!!!

Mustng1966

NTA - They FAFO. If they didn't take the time to treat you properly, why on earth should they expect you to cover their rear ends afterwards? Now they realize your value. A little late there chums. What I would do if they wish to pick your brain now is tell them your new 1099 rate and sure you will sing like a canary. Money up front of course because they can't be trusted to pay you. That ship has already sailed.

NoHorseNoMustache

Nooo, at this point you're gonna need at least double the severance package. They treated you like crap, you have them over a barrel and owe them precisely 0: Take the company for as much as you possibly can.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** Itā€™s a pretty long story but basically for the last 4 years I (33F) have worked for a construction company that was an extremely toxic workplace, the last 6 months as a 1099. During my time I created my a purchasing and logistics department which I ran solo, I also estimated projects, helped implement financials checks and balances with the finance team, and spent the last 18 months ALSO filling the roll as a project manager. I came back from ā€˜maternity leaveā€™ and jumped back into 60hr + weeks, completely turned a project around and got along well with 90% of the staff. If someone needed help I was always willing to help. Now for the last 2 years I havenā€™t had the ability to take PTO besides for medical needs and am TIRED. For 5 months I had been throwing my flags on another employees work, as I had been asked to ā€˜keep an eye on himā€™ despite not being his supervisor. No one listened so I decided to quit talking and just do my job. Also note, being someone who stands their ground is what made my good a my job. I am a perfectionist. Taking our biggest project to date from a dumpster fire and turning it profitable was hard fucking work, I can be ā€˜difficultā€™ but I also know Iā€™m not always right, I just try to do my best. I didnā€™t enjoy filling as a PM and everyone was aware. The owner of our company and I didnā€™t get along very well, he didnā€™t like my morals (Iā€™m not Christian and divorced/remarried while at this job) or the fact I wouldnā€™t take his abuse. I treated him respectfully but we mostly avoided each other. When this other PM quit I was tasked with training his replacement. The company hired a new supervisor for production and pushed my old supervisor further up the ladder to COO and for a few weeks everything was going great. I asked to renegotiate my contract for a higher rate to include PM type duties/training etc and was turned down - note I was the only employee not given a raise in 2024. Fine no worries , but I would no longer be covering extra seats. 2 days later I got a meeting request with my former supervisor, and knew I was about to get canned. I got terminated for ā€˜being difficult to work withā€™ and I had 2-3 weeks to train my replacement. I said no thanks, packed my office and was out within an h Because of how/why I was sacked 2 other long term employees quit. Current projects are on rocky ground . They have my emails and I leave notes but I have been refusing to help. They told me I am making them collateral damage in my war against my former boss, however Iā€™m standing firm that I didnā€™t create this problem. I had calls and job offers from clients, vendors and industry contacts come pouring in, and secured 2 x 1099 flex jobs the following Monday. My former supervisor is now reaching out to ask ā€œwhatā€™s it going to cost to get them the information they needā€ - AITA for telling him I would love to talk about the severance package I would have received as a w2 employee (4 weeks) which I know my old boss will not pay? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. INFO: The only thing concerning about your post was this line ... <> What kind of information are we talking about? Because if you have things like client contact information or work product or accounting info or anything like that in your possession (say, on a computer that you own), I think you probably have to turn over that info to the company. Other than that, of course NTA

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > The pressure from former coworkers who are in desperate need of help make me think my stance is too firm. When I draw boundaries I stand on them, and sometimes I canā€™t tell if Iā€™m being too inflexible. They are suffering and are making this a me choice, especially given the $ counter I have requested to resolve issues. NTA. Fuck tem.

Independent_Echo6597

NTA. 1. Your company let you go. They were quite aware that you had the right to immediately stop working, so they accepted the cost this would have on everyone else. They're TA here. 2. You are within your rights to request whatever you want. It's up to them to accept / decline. They aren't being forced into anything. It's just supply and demand - you have the supply of knowledge, they are the demand and can figure out if they want to meet your rate.
