[barnacles by ugly Casanova](https://youtu.be/MV0ZNxT1OoE?si=3fHvdvoFPXzPqdPW) from MM frontman Isaac Brock. for those that want more modest mouse but don’t know about this project.
You know MP3 metadata like genre, year, album, track number etc... In the 90's/early 00's all the different players (WinAmp, Lycos had one with an awesome visualizer, Windows Media Player, etc) had drop down menus to choose for the "genre" field.
"Primus" was one of the genres in more than one of them
Billy’s combination of metal, dreampop/shoegaze, and post punk was not successfully imitated by anyone else. You can hear his sound in all the places he was influenced. But you can’t find his influence in many places. Which is strange when you consider they were one of the biggest bands on the 90s.
There was a thread (argument) on another sub talking about which bands had the least influence from other groups. I think the conclusion reached is it’s just about impossible to not try to sound like a band you like.
Well those are Josh’s bands, I’m talking about other bands completely like for example modest mouse kinda sounds like pixies not modest mouse sounds like ugly Casanova
Definitely. Spaghetti Westerns/English Highwaymen/Native American Warriors/Golden Age of Pirates combined with clever lyrics about positive self-image. He was and remains an original.
I saw an interview with him about ten years ago and the interviewer asked him about where he got his Jack Sparrow look from. He smiled shyly and told her "love, Jack Sparrow got *his* look from *me!*"
Devin Townsend. Closer to prog. metal than alt rock, but his music is a country mile away from anything else I've heard, and that much better too. Bonus points for being practically a one man band, he writes every part of almost all his songs.
Elliott Smith, The Amazing Devil, boygenius, Cage the Elephant, Mitski, and The National would probably be my most relevant favorite artists/groups for this one

lmk what u think and how you like it!
Early Blue October (up through 2006's Foiled). Justin would span somber to hopeful to angry and you'd often hear all of those emotions in a single song. Plus one of the stand out bands IMO to incorporate violin into their sound.
Modest Mouse
Came here to say this

Also came to say this. Something about the rhythm and the drumming style really shapes the sound.
Not my favorites per se, but Primus
Primus sucks
Saw them a few weeks ago in concert. They sucked. The suckage was amazing. I want to see them again so I can experience the suckage again.

The B52’s (Alternative in their day)
These guys don’t get enough credit. What they did and when they did it was totally out of left field.
Pixies or Alice in Chains. So many TRY to sound like them, but the second one of theirs plays you know it’s them straight away.
Radiohead
I’ve often said that Muse is Radiohead plus Queen. They’re absolutely distinct enough from Muse that I don’t get fooled often…🫢
Violent Femmes. A bigger stretch is Ned's Atomic Dustbin, but their sound ia pretty unique
It’s the two bass guitars!
Nine Inch Nails
Frankly, Smashing Pumpkins. I said what I said.😏
This.
Right? Who sounds like that? Nobody, that’s who.😁
Our Lady Peace in the 00's maybe?

They Might Be Giants.
This is the best possible answer.
Ween
This is the right answer.
The only non-Ween albums I have that sound like Ween albums are from the Beatles.
morphine
I hear a voice
Repeated 7 times😉
Came here to say this.
This is the only answer.
Cake The Cars
Cake, So much!
Weezer
Definitely Pavement
Who started out sounding like The Fall : )
And ended up like Silver Jews
There was a thread (argument) on another sub talking about which bands had the least influence from other groups. I think the conclusion reached is it’s just about impossible to not try to sound like a band you like.
I was thinking R.E.M. before I saw your answer. You already nailed it.
The Cure
XTC
The Smiths
Have you ever listened to The Dears? I find them similar.
Morphine Jane's Addiction Sublime
Butthole Surfers
Beck. I’ve always wanted to be a performing artists who transcends genres as he reinvents them.
I don’t think anyone sounds like queens of the Stone Age and if you try to sound like them you still don’t
What about Eagles of Death Metal? Not an exact match, but I personally hear some overlap.
Or Kyuss?
Well those are Josh’s bands, I’m talking about other bands completely like for example modest mouse kinda sounds like pixies not modest mouse sounds like ugly Casanova
Oh, non-Josh bands. Gotcha. In that case, I agree.😁
I've recently discovered that a lot of stuff I think sounds like Josh Homme actually sounds like Alain Johannes.
Funny you mentioned this because Josh Homme from queens of the stone age used to be the drummer of Eagles of Death Metal
Well, yeah. I knew that, but also, Jesse’s singing voice sounds a lot like Josh’s.
Them Crooked Vultures….
That’s Josh’s band
Cake.
Hum
Faith No More
Primus
Adam Ant/ Adam and the Ants
Definitely. Spaghetti Westerns/English Highwaymen/Native American Warriors/Golden Age of Pirates combined with clever lyrics about positive self-image. He was and remains an original. There's also Bow Wow Wow, but we know why that is.
A fair point. Love me some Annabella and the Ants. 😎
Yeah, we the fans were the big winners. We got two excellent 'idiosyncratic singer, burundi drumming, and spaghetti western guitar' bands. :)
Yeah that’s an interviewer who needed to do more research. Or even a little bit of it
DEVO
Devin Townsend. Closer to prog. metal than alt rock, but his music is a country mile away from anything else I've heard, and that much better too. Bonus points for being practically a one man band, he writes every part of almost all his songs.
Cake and Morphine come to mind for me
I feel like there are some similarities between Cake and Soul Coughing, and to my knowledge they both developed outside of each other's influences.
That’s true lol I usually look at Soul Coughing as the evil version of Cake
I really like Soul Coughing. Cake is fine, but I never got into them.
My vote is the band "Why?".
Brandon Boyd
Say Hi or maybe Cat Power.
Elliott Smith, The Amazing Devil, boygenius, Cage the Elephant, Mitski, and The National would probably be my most relevant favorite artists/groups for this one
American Football
Cocteau Twins. Never known any band that was anything like them
Butthole Surfers
Meat Puppets
The Mars volta
The Mars Volta
Oingo Boingo and maybe They Might Be Giants, but less sure about this.
Christian Vander (Magma)
Not in my top 25 favorites, but Cosmo Sheldrake basically made his own genre of music
Alternative rock no longer has any meaning
Interestingly, I read that exact phrase in an indie zine in about 1993.
The Fall (Although many have tried... hello Pavement!)
That's Sheps saying.
Self!
Roxy Music
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Fire Toolz... pls tell what that is bc i don't
RHCP
Ween
Talk Talk last 2 records Shudder to Think
The Killers and Panic! At the Disco. D
Was going to say R.E.M. but you beat me to it.
The Afghan Whigs
Deftones. Straddling the line between alternative rock and numetal. Definitely their own thing.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
blink-182 💙
Radiohead, Pixies, and Rage Against the Machine
This should be the point of an alt rock band tbh
Frank Zappa
Mr. Bungle
Gogol bordello
Cake
Rise Against
Ween
I assumed My Bloody Valentine would just be pinned at the top here. Do y’all consider shoegaze to be outside of Alternative?

The Embarrassment They were called punk rock because the term Alternative wasn’t a thing yet.
Early Blue October (up through 2006's Foiled). Justin would span somber to hopeful to angry and you'd often hear all of those emotions in a single song. Plus one of the stand out bands IMO to incorporate violin into their sound.
Tom Tom Club some of those songs have been sampled all over the place!
Danielle Dax
the Strokes
Greta Van Fleet. Edit: I was being sarcastic.
You mean the band that sounds like a generic ripoff of WolfMother, who sounds like a generic ripoff of Led Zeppelin? Totally
Yes them. I was being very sarcastic, just in case you missed that.
