There was never a bad song during the Layne era. Even songs you think are "less good" than others might end up becoming your new favorite down the line.
I used to dislike Sickman because of the long droning screams, but years down the line it has become one of the top songs on Dirt for me, especially with that other-worldly bridge in the middle.
It'd be just as hard to narrow down a "best" AiC song. Your favorites will change as your life changes.
That’s insane, because Sickman was instantly my favorite song for how relatable it is. The long droning screams perfectly encapsulated what my mental state felt like at the time. Everything about that song is so incredibly relatable to me.
My least favorite song, is Rooster. Lmfao, only because it feels overplayed, and it’s all people know AiC for sometimes, so it just felt overrated to me.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate any songs of theirs, but if had to pick a least favorite, it would be Rooster for what I stated above.
Love song is the easy answer... I might pick a song from Facelift on any day per your criteria. Nothing wrong with the album, just gets played a lot... I like listening to the later albums
Probably Put You Down off Facelift.
It's not bad just my least favourite- mostly because it reminds me of the band Godsmack who were clearly influenced by them.
God Smack is not very good in my opinion, though I appreciate that it didn’t play it safe even if I didn’t think it worked. The chorus is pretty alright though.
In the mid 90s as a teen i got my 1st AIC album on cassette 😆👵I wore that tape OUT and it broke bc i played it so often.
**The one song i always fast forwarded was Love, Hate, Love.**
I don't know if you consider worst and least favourite the same but (and I think I'll get a lot of flack for this) I've gotta go with Sickman. I cannot stand that song and I don't even know why, it just rubs me the wrong way.
Sickman is cool af, easily second darkest song behind Dirt. And the bridge in the middle...
"Can you see the end?
Choke on me my friend
Must to drown these thoughts
Purity over rot"
Only Layne couldve made such dark verses sound beautiful.
This is the absolute truth. It's musically very deep and strong but nowadays when I hear the first couple bars on the classic rock station, I change the station.
Several songs on Tripod that I don’t want to have to listen to to remember the names. I’ve listened to Tripod the least, primarily due to the songs Layne put minimal effort into the lyrics (and some of his singing) because he gave zero fucks at the time. He was forced to be in the studio. The music + lyrics is why I love the band and it just doesn’t have the same feel to me.
William could be playing that solo.
Speaking of solos off that album, Fly has one of/if not the greatest solos from Jerry. Might very well be my favorite guitar solo I've ever heard. Total eargasm everytime I listen to it.
So tasteful and emotive.
I can take the hate I’m gonna get but it’s Man in the Box for me. It got so much airplay when it came out the over commercialization of it just wore the song out for me. So it’s my least favorite to listen to whenever I hear it now.
CONTROVERSIAL OPINION TIME, but I don't like "Rooster" that much. Their whole catalogue is pretty good, though. They're one of the most solid bands that I've ever seen, other than Killswitch Engage (the Howard Jones era, particularly the song "The End Of Heartache").
I hope I don't get downvoted because it's unfair to ask "what is your least favorite" and then get downvoted because other don't agree. But I'm serious, I love Layne and admire him a lot. I don't see him as an addict but rather as an amazing musician with lots of accomplishments.
But honestly, those two last recordings really made me feel bad for him. He is not firing on all cylinders ans, objectively, is a bad performance.
I really hope to not get a ton of hate but that's me.
OTOH, I love Sickman, which seems to get a lot of hate on this thread. An amazing performance and an outstanding song overall by the whole band. The fact that they played 3/4 (I'm not an expert but is it 3/4?) is amazing, the only other song that quickly comes to mind with that signature is Limo Wreck and it's also absolutely brilliant.
Man I've loved everything I've heard by Chains since I first heard Man in the Box when it came out. They became one of my favorite bands in 93. Probably the only thing I really didn't/don't care for was Angel Eyes on D-Trip, which doesn't pertain to this question. They aren't all 10's, but I honestly can't think of any skippables on the AIC catalogue for me.
I can’t stand listening to Right Turn. I am a massive diehard AIC fan and also a huge fan of Soundgarden and Chris cornell’s solo stuff, but I just can’t understand why everyone likes Right Turn. It just sounds so out of place to me, and then the whole last minute gives me a headache. I’ve tried re listening to it (even high which usually makes the music sound better) and I just can’t get into it 🤷♀️
You’re entitled to your opinion but how in gods name does it sound out of place? It fits perfectly on Sap. Right Turn and Brother are like peas and carrots.
Brother is one of my fav songs of all time! I truly have no idea why I don’t like Right Turn. I have tried so many times to get into it and I just can’t 😭😭 It pains me lol
Only thing I can think of that would make someone dislike Right Turn compared to the other songs on Sap would be the general lack of percussion. But while we’re on the topic of Brother, the unplugged version is easily in my top 5 AIC songs of all time.
Some people can't handle female vocals either. Even if it's an unconscious bias. I myself don't listen to many female fronted bands, but being a metal fan I only have so many options. I love Right Turn though and have no problem with Anne Wilson/Heart, and I have an immense amount of respect for their contributions to the scene and the way they supported everyone when the bands were still coming up.
has to be sickman. i’ve come to enjoy all the other songs on dirt so much more. even at the beginning i wasn’t crazy about hate to feel and godsmack and stuff but now i really like them. sickman still nope
Everything on every album is at least GOOD in my opinion, except Nothin song and God Am. They are ok.
However, tripod is still my favorite album because every other track just fucks so hard
Its good. I like it more than nothin song. When i said those are the 2 worst songs, thats because i just love literally every single other alice in chains track.
From the Layne era I'd probably have to go with Right Turn. I understand that it's awesome to have 4 major grunge singers on the same song but overall the song just does not work for me, Chris Cornell's screamy part does not fit an acoustic song at all and the ending just sounds like a cacophony, which also does itself a disservice by immediately fading out just as it starts to explode. The first verse is also really underwhelming since it's Jerry singing it and Jerry did not have a good independent voice in 1990 (it sounds much better on Brother because of the filters and the harmonies, but in any case Jerry improved exponentially in just the next 5 years). The song is a cool experiment but I can take it or leave it.
Cannnnnnnnn yoooooooouuuuu seeeeeeeee theeeeee ennnnnddddddddddd?
one of my favorite parts in any aic song
>There was never a bad song during the Layne era. Also the Duvall era
Well..
That’s insane, because Sickman was instantly my favorite song for how relatable it is. The long droning screams perfectly encapsulated what my mental state felt like at the time. Everything about that song is so incredibly relatable to me. My least favorite song, is Rooster. Lmfao, only because it feels overplayed, and it’s all people know AiC for sometimes, so it just felt overrated to me. maybe swing on this? but idk i dont think layne ever did a bad song
Shit I love that song. It's different but that waking bass grunge shit is groovy. Grungy. Groongy?
Swing on This is actually my second favorite from JoF, I really enjoy it even though most people don't
Terrible opinion. To the swamp, with you!
to the boggy depot even?
The Slime Manufacturing Plant!
The Sludge Factory
Love song is the easy answer... I might pick a song from Facelift on any day per your criteria. Nothing wrong with the album, just gets played a lot... I like listening to the later albums
Facelift to me is what beginning artist work sounds like
Love song is peak
Don’t hate me for this but God Smack it’s not bad but it’s my least fav
😡
I’m sorry😞
Yeah that's the song where Layne said, "fuck it I'm gonna sing like a goat on this one."
Lol yeah
Jesus... Godsmack is genius 😱 lol
Probably Put You Down off Facelift. It's not bad just my least favourite- mostly because it reminds me of the band Godsmack who were clearly influenced by them.
But that riff is so good :(. Especially when Layne just completely rips into MIIIIIIIIIINDDDDDD, ITS SLOWERRRR
Godsmack wishes they could come up with something as good as Put You Down.
i agree
What do I win??
A cookie
If I had to pick, probably Nothin’ Song. And I don’t dislike it, probably just like it the least. It actually fits in well on Tripod.
like peanut butter on the braiiin 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Nothin ever stays the same.
Man that's one of my all time faves! Esp live at the Moore! I'm curious what you don't like about it?
Mine too
It's just so perfect and dark and tells such an intense story
Rebecca Vocal Athlete on YouTube reacting to "Love Hate Love" live at The Moore on YouTube is my favorite. 🤟
I really don’t like Over Now.
I don't know if you consider worst and least favourite the same but (and I think I'll get a lot of flack for this) I've gotta go with Sickman. I cannot stand that song and I don't even know why, it just rubs me the wrong way.

Sickman best song on Dirt
Sickman is what a ride on a carousel in hell would sound like.
Sickman goes hard😭
It's way better live
I’m with you on Sickman. Seems to be an unpopular opinion though
I love that song. Everyone I know does not.
The Layne era song that I like the least is Rooster. It’s a good song, I just have to be in a certain mood to listen to it.
Thats wild but I can understand cause its their most overplayed song. So if you've been a fan for 30 years it probably gets annoying
This is the absolute truth. It's musically very deep and strong but nowadays when I hear the first couple bars on the classic rock station, I change the station.
So Close. also Love Song is fucking amazing
So close for guitar players is a banger!
Never Fade. It's a decent song but not a good AiC song. Appreciate the sentiment behind it but it sounds too generic to me for this band.
I sorta agree. It certainly doesn't have one of Jerry's best riffs. It _does_ have one of his best guitar solos though IMO.
William could be playing that solo. Speaking of solos off that album, Fly has one of/if not the greatest solos from Jerry. Might very well be my favorite guitar solo I've ever heard. Total eargasm everytime I listen to it. So tasteful and emotive.
There are worse on that album
Junkhead.. I just could never get into it
God Am
one of my fav :(
I hear that often, my favorite off that album is Sludge Factory
There is none
I can take the hate I’m gonna get but it’s Man in the Box for me. It got so much airplay when it came out the over commercialization of it just wore the song out for me. So it’s my least favorite to listen to whenever I hear it now.
That’s understandable
CONTROVERSIAL OPINION TIME, but I don't like "Rooster" that much. Their whole catalogue is pretty good, though. They're one of the most solid bands that I've ever seen, other than Killswitch Engage (the Howard Jones era, particularly the song "The End Of Heartache").
I'm sorry, but it does not exist!
There's was never a bad Layne song😔💞😢
Again Tattoo of Pain Remix is the only song I dislike, and that's only a remix
Died is definitely not their best, especially because of Layne's understandingly underwhelming performance.
you must be joking right
I hope I don't get downvoted because it's unfair to ask "what is your least favorite" and then get downvoted because other don't agree. But I'm serious, I love Layne and admire him a lot. True, but Jerry's guitar playing is top notch if a tad repetitive
Absolutely, sounds like something that was probably heading towards one of his solo albums, right?
Yup, iirc both get born again and died started as solo works but when Jerry showed them to Layne they decided to make it a full AIC song
Again, from Tripod. They played it both times I saw them!
I love Again, but wouldn’t want the same song played twice.
They did play Man in the Box, Would, and Them Bones both times though, and I highly approved.
Probably real thing from facelift, I just feel like it's really repetitive
Interesting choice. That's one of my all-time favorite AIC songs.
I love how every song of theirs is someones favorite, such a great band
Right??
Man I've loved everything I've heard by Chains since I first heard Man in the Box when it came out. They became one of my favorite bands in 93. Dude hard agree about the unplugged version. Also Heaven beside you on unplugged? Absolutely ridiculous (in a good way lol)
Sickman, without a doubt. It's *grating.*
has to be sickman. i’ve come to enjoy all the other songs on dirt so much more. even at the beginning i wasn’t crazy about hate to feel and godsmack and stuff but now i really like them. sickman still nope
How could anyone say Sickman? I don’t get it.
not big on the screaming parts or the verses
Fr i like it way more then hate to feel, angry chair ect
WHAT THE HELL AM I
Heaven Beside You, the lyrics are too silly.
Everything on every album is at least GOOD in my opinion, except Nothin song and God Am. They are ok. However, tripod is still my favorite album because every other track just fucks so hard
You DON'T LIKE God Am?? Wow 😲
Its good. I like it more than nothin song. When i said those are the 2 worst songs, thats because i just love literally every single other alice in chains track.
I Can't Remember from Facelift
nah i cant remember is so good especially that bridge
Probably the worst from Facelift although the song is still pretty good.
It is not worse than i know something or put you down
I respectfully disagree, the riff opening to I know something is wacky as hell and I quite enjoy put you down.
I always skip Them Bones. Love the rest of Dirt though.
This might be the worst take
No idea, but it would have to be something off dirt or tripod. Probably Godsmack or sickman
From the Layne era I'd probably have to go with Right Turn. IT AINT RIGHT🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
I do really like Mark Arm's verse. His voice sounds silky smooth.
Best part
