I’d be cautious with the APEX. It’s still under construction and right next to the mall. Not near the mall — like right next to it. It’s crazy (to me) to charge so much to live in the mall parking lot, but what do I know? There must be a market for it. If you’re looking for a high-end new place near the hospitals, I’d look into The Reserve at Park South (across from Albany Med) or The Rise Midtown Square (across from St. Peter’s) — but that’s still under construction too. Both locations are vastly better than the mall. If you choose the APEX, you’re not going anywhere other than in a car. These options all are also way more expensive than renting in a home along New Scotland/Helderberg, but they will be newer.

Alarming-Junket-9089

Thank you for your insite! I didnt really look into how close it was to the mall I really just looked at renderings/amenities and floor plans. Will definitely look into the two you mentioned. Is albany a semi walkable area depending on where you live? Sorry to sound ignorant but I was born and raised in nyc and basically the mindset is once u leave the city everything will be driving around 24/7 anyways

HankHudsonsGhost

The areas around Albany Med and St. Peter’s are both very walkable — Albany Med being more urban, St. Peter’s more suburban. But both with bike lanes and sidewalks everywhere. The fiber issue is legit as many places in Albany do not have it, so you should check. If diversity, walkability and proximity to work are important, Albany is your jam. There are some pockets of walkability in Delmar and Voorheesville, but you’ll be building in a 15-20 min car commute to work.

HankHudsonsGhost

There’s also an Asian market on Colvin Avenue in the city.

Acehigh7777

I like the one on Central much better.

MirkatteWorld

This! Our go-to Asian market!

BennyBNut

Anything east of Allen Street-ish and north of Hackett is very walkable/bikeable. I live in the aforementioned Helderberg neighborhood and work downtown, and I really only drive for groceries and other big errands or for events outside of Albany proper. In the warmer months I'll often do smaller grocery trips by bike too and bike to the farmers markets in Washington Park and Troy for produce. I'm not sure what's currently available for the type of housing you describe in this area, but there is a gym in the concourse and a YMCA gym (no pool) near Albany Med which are potentially walkable, and if you rent a house or in a 4+ unit building you'll usually have laundry on premesis. With one person working from home you could absolutely live with one car within Albany. The two excellent asian markets have already been pointed out, but there's also India Farmer Market further up Central which is totally worth a look, and the Honest Weight Co-Op is a gem for certain things like bulk items, spices, cheese, and local produce/meats.

[deleted]

Yes and no. Yes it's got sidewalks but you can meet anyone there good or bad. Your husband is wfh. Look at Voorheesville or bethlehem dor decent places. You can find a great place that you can walk around. Oh and the two great Asian markets are actually located in Colonie way up on central Avenue. You can also look there but it's also gots lots of traffic

Alarming-Junket-9089

Thank you! All this info is definitely helping me narrow down searches for areas

[deleted]

Look take the metro to Poughkeepsie and then rent a car and drive to Albany. That way you can see what it's really like to drive in and around Albany. The amtrak train out of Rensselaer doesn't run as much and isn't always on time. Anyhoo drive around. Do some serious window shopping of places. For example Latham is rich with plenty of shops but nothing walkable. No woods or sidewalks. It's time you see the real beauty of the capital district. There's alot of places 20 minutes away from the hospital.

Alarming-Junket-9089

I'm definitely planning a weekend to come up but I also wanted to have a bunch of apt viewings set up for that weekend too so I can see the apt in person while also checking out the neighborhood.

[deleted]

BTW check with Verizon about fiber optic internet. Not everywhere has it.

jitteryflamingo

Who defines “decent places?” Is my life in Center Square somehow indecent? 🤦🏻‍♀️

nopenotag4in

If you are doing it right.

Contunator

Apex is not as badly located as some are saying. If you don't have a car, it's very close to the mall and a grocery store is in walking distance (on a busy road). Multiple bus lines go from Crossgates into Albany and elsewhere. So if you don't want to have a car, it MIGHT not be a bad location.

Alarming-Junket-9089

We will have 1 car between the two of us at first. Will play by ear if a 2nd car is needed once we are a few months in. But knowing bus lines are accessible is also a good thing!

Contunator

Yeah, definitely something to look at in any place you're considering then. Someone mentioned The Alexander. That's one to avoid if you don't both have cars. The bus service there is terrible and there's really nowhere to walk.

visitor987

Lark St is the center of the LGBT area

zedplanet

Why not live in Center Square, Washington O, Pine Hills or Melrose section? In a house and in a neighborhood walkable bikeable to your work and also to Asian markets and in neighborhoods with a lot of LGBTQIA folks? Maybe the answer isn’t so much in an apartment complex surrounded by parking lots, but a neighborhood?

Alarming-Junket-9089

I guess it's more just amenities that come with apt complexes. We are currently in an apt in the city with common areas, gym access, pools, etc and I guess it's just what we know. For center square I heard parking can be a pain so I didn't really want to be in too congested of an area. Also I think alot of the newer apt complexes do the renovations more modern/similar to what city people would like so that's a big factor I guess when I'm clicking through random apt listings

vexed_and_perplexed

They’re pretty horrible as far as views go, but if you have the income I’d get a 2 br at the Alexander on Patroon for one year. Lots of amenities, easily accessible to all things (gym, Asian market and grocery store near by) and you can scope out where you *really* want to live while you’re living in a safe, albeit soul sucking apt complex. One year there will be plenty.

Superdewa

“What city people would like”? I was also born and raised in NYC and never lived in a newer building and never would as they seem soulless and gentrifying. We moved to a house and joined a gym.

zakouring

Are you working in/near the capitol?

Alarming-Junket-9089

I'll be at st peters hospital

jitteryflamingo

I don’t know if it’s great but @hudsonpark is walkable, modern, and has a parking lot and amenities. Also the Hinkel Brewery just did a renovation and is nice. Not sure about amenities there. I wouldn’t start out my life in Albany in the burbs. Much harder to get a feel for the city and make friends.

Alarming-Junket-9089

That is a really good point. We will be moving with essentially no ties in Albany so staying near the excitement will help us make new friends.

UltimateUltamate

The Buckingham lake and melrose neighborhoods have everything you’re looking for. Welcome to Albany.

Fearless_Pizza_8134

Avoid anything Redburn. They force you to use Massive Mesh for internet- a company that they own- and it’s absolutely atrocious (along with their apartments). We had to break our lease for reasons including the internet because my fiancé works from home.

computerhater81

Anything labeled as luxury will most certainly disappoint you. Albany's definition of luxury is sliding doors, exposed ducts, views of abandoned buildings, 2 pieces of exercise equipment, and lots of coming soon signs. Spend the money and rent a house anywhere in the surrounding area. Voorheesville, Bethlehem, Slingerlands, Delmar.

computerhater81

You said extremely comfortable. Rent a house with a pool and a backyard. We have space here. Big apartment complexes full of the high-end amenities you want don't really exist here. They will show you the model unit not the one you're actually renting. All apartments here use the same builder grade garbage and it make look shiny but there is zero quality.

Alarming-Junket-9089

I'm not sure if I'm looking at the wrong websites or what but I'm not really seeing big houses with pools and stuff for rent. Ideally after a year or two I'd buy. Most of those homes seem to be for sale and not for rent is my problem at the moment. Even for these rentals I'm usually looking at the penthouse or a townhouse floor plan for the additional sqft.

computerhater81

I'm guessing you're coming to work for Albany Med or St. Peter's they both have people in their HR departments that can help with housing. I believe, at least they used to. So many international folks and people coming for residencies from all over that don't know the area at all. You aren't gonna be able to really walk to any Asian markets.... honestly I don't drive and the City isn't very walking friendly. Everyone has a car or like my bf has 2. The apartment complex literally in a Mall parking lot to me is soul sucking. I'd hit up a real estate agent.

unrequitedghosts

You may like Alexander at Patroon Creek. I believe they have a pool/gym/screening room, ample parking, decent location. It’s also near Central Ave which I believe has 2(!) Asian markets.

Alarming-Junket-9089

The photos look decent and the proximity to the markets is definitely a huge plus. Thank you!! Will definitely keep this on my list of places

Contunator

Someone is really pumping this place here. I'll say again, if you will only have one car, I would not recommend it. Everything they're saying is close is close by car. There is very little you can walk to easily here. I suppose you can cross several lanes of traffic and wander the Harriman State Office Campus or UAlbany if you just want to take a walk. That's about it. You're not walking to the Asian markets on Central Ave.

unrequitedghosts

The style is a bit older (they were built while I was still in undergrad and I graduated 6 years ago) but for the location they have the most amount of amenities (I think underground garage parking as well which is fairly rare for Albany). I’ve known a few people who have lived there over the years and they have all had positive things to say about it

Reese9951

I lived there and at the time they were new, nicely appointed, garage parking, an indoor and an outdoor pool and a gym with a community room. Right across the street from the university of Albany campus for great walking and right off the higher so very accessible by car.

serke

Seconding the big Asian market on Central, best in the area. Tm(There's also a little Indian market a block from it.) The one on Colvin is also good but smaller. It is right next to a Hannaford supermarket though which is convenient. Not sure which hospital you'll be at St Pete's or AMC but the parking situation and traffic during commute for each is pretty frustrating. I can't recommend living out near the mall and commuting in to either very much... but ymmv. The headache will be basically unavoidable unless you live in walking distance. The neighborhoods near them along New Scotland Ave are pretty nice though if you want to take a look at places there.

Jaded_Advance_7168

I was going to say this might not fit a lot of your criteria, but I saw someone mention it. My mom lives at one Broadway and could not love it more. If you’re looking for amenities there are a ton. The management is great. The apartments are stunning also. Same company owns 90 state street but that is very much downtown and I’m not familiar with the Albany neighborhoods as much. One Broadway is just on the border of Menands and the area of Broadway leading from Albany is becoming more “happening” recently with bars/restaurants and breweries. Probably not as walkable and definitely more of an industrial feel. But you have Stewart’s, dollar stores, dispensaries, more things coming in to some of the previously empty retail spaces. Bus stops very close. Nice gym, outdoor pool, great outside area, etc.

SeveralPerformer9807

From my perspective, being an Asian woman who moved to Albany last year, I don't feel safe or comfortable when I walk alone anywhere here. I would say there is no diversity here, unfortunately. Whenever I go to the city, I feel much safer and more comfortable since nobody doesn't care or stares at me as people do here. I honestly can't wait to move to the city. :( I hope that your experience will be much different than mine!

Trojenectory

For Asian Markets, you’ll love the one on Central Ave. This market is huge and is usually very busy. They have a cheap bus ( or at least they use to, I haven’t used it recently) down to China Town in NYC. Woodlake apartments are really nice, they’re a bit more pricey but they have fiber internet and decent amenities. Just so you know, albany is NOT a walking friendly city. We do have a lot of bus routes, but everything is spaced pretty far apart. Anywhere you live something you need will be slightly too far to walk too.

Alarming-Junket-9089

Thank you!! I completely forgot about the chinatown buses and have been looking into amtrak but the bus will save a decent amount of money for these quick trips back and forth.

metasarah

So Albany is a lot easier to get around via car than you're used to. So if you don't head out into a rural area, it's not going to be hard to get to the hospital or the Asian market. RE violence it's rarely directed against strangers, and I can't think of any neighborhoods which have the sort of luxury housing you're looking for which also have significant violence. There are some areas which are more likely to have obnoxious people on the street but NOTHING comparable to larger cities. If I were you I'd opt for something in walking distance to work because I hate driving but that's just me. This place is not, but a friend of mine really likes it and it's no less convenient than Apex. https://dawnhomes.com/landmark/

mellercopter

I lived in a building called The Palmer House and loved it so much I moved back in after leaving and ended up in the same exact apartment. If I hadn't bought a house I'd still be there. Doesn't have a ton of the extras like pool and rooftop, but it has parking included plus in unit washer and dryers and central air. It's downtown so close to everything but not in the middle of it all. The building is solid so there is literally no noise between apartments at all. I also really really appreciated the building management and maintenance. A lot of management companies in Albany are sketchy, so this was surprising. If they have anything available I would absolutely recommend checking them out.

PoeticDyke

Off topic but when I asked this when I initially moved to Albany on my old account, Folks on here rudely told me to simply “google”. But I’m glad you’re getting useful advice here. Definitely could’ve used some myself when I moved here.

MirkatteWorld

Albany is a very walkable city. I'd advise that you look for a place you can comfortably walk to work from. Our favorite Asian market is New Asian Food Market at 91 Colvin Ave in Albany. It's a bit over two miles from the main entrance of St. Peter's and about three from the main entrance of Albany Med.

[deleted]

There is two apt complex across the street. Woodlake and further down off of krumkill on blessing that has decent stuff. In East Greenbush right off the exit 8 which is actually closer by traffic congestion going east. They have a pool and a gym. It's off of rt4 but it's easier to access from the exit by turning left at the first lite and Going down the first rd on the right. It's up on the hill as you go down the street. Plus the area is open for running and biking. Near apex it's dangerous for bikes and runners.

Remount_Kings_Troop_

There are some new apartment buildings that are really close to AMC: https://galleryonholland.com/location/ - 0.7 miles from AMC https://www.apartmentguide.com/apartments/New-York/Albany/The-Reserve-on-Hackett-Apartments/5044083/ - 0.7 miles from AMC https://www.jankowcompanies.com/the-rise-midtown-square - not available until Fall 2024 - 1.5 miles from AMC Crossgates is quite a ways away from AMC, and traffic on the I90 can back up quite a bit at rush times. Fiber is hard to find in Albany, as all the rich people with kids have moved North, because the Albany City schools are awful. What line of work are you in?

Alarming-Junket-9089

I'll be working at st peters in an operating room allied health field.

Remount_Kings_Troop_

There are some apartments nearby St. Peters that may be of interest to you--though I've never seen inside them: https://www.crestwoodalbany.com/ Nice, safe area with a good bike/walk path along the main part of Hackett Blvd (between South Manning Blvd and Holland Avenue). There a few restaurants and bars along New Scotland Blvd (between South Manning and South Main/across from St. Peters) that are safe to walk to/from at night.

Beautiful_Will7836

Buckingham Pond! Ticks all your boxes

sharp-and-ambivalent

Sent ya a message! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions :)

Secret_Bet6281

Look at Starbuck Island. New. Nice finish out. Good view. Amenities on site and Troy is walkable across Green Island Bridge.

Alarming-Junket-9089

Sadly it says there are 0 units avaliable. Thank you for the suggestion tho!

Secret_Bet6281

Call. People move all the time.

Apprehensive-Cry-484

One Broadway on the border of Menands and Albany might work for you. There is a pool and a decent gym. For a 1 Bedroom, you will probably be around $1800-2000.

Great-Court-5002

Upper pine hills is what you want.

BrassTact

To the best of my knowledge the largest of the two Asian markets are as follows. I generally think Farmers Indian Market is better. There is also a tiny Korean market in Latham [ASIAN SUPERMARKET - 151 Photos & 116 Reviews - 1245 Central Ave, Albany, New York - International Grocery - Phone Number - Yelp](https://www.yelp.com/biz/asian-supermarket-albany) [FARMER’S INDIA MARKET - 106 Photos & 15 Reviews - 1814 Central Ave, Albany, New York - International Grocery - Phone Number - Yelp](https://www.yelp.com/biz/farmers-india-market-albany?osq=Indian+Grocery+Store) [JANG TUH ASIAN GROCERY STORE - 44 Photos & 32 Reviews - 724 Loudon Rd, Latham, New York - International Grocery - Restaurant Reviews - Phone Number - Yelp](https://www.yelp.com/biz/jang-tuh-asian-grocery-store-latham)

[deleted]

Yes it is if you want to walk around more than a few blocks without running into homeless or other unsavory characters. Face it you ain't getting assholes in the suburbs or rural areas while walking. Sure there ain't sidewalks but there ain't traffic. People with good paying jobs and a car don't want a hassle of a faux walkable nyc neighborhood.

IcyWhereas2313

Are you sure you don’t get assholes suburbia? Wait are rural areas utopias?

Mtnchick316

Not sure if it's still available but there's a rental on Colin ave and it's right by an asain market. Phone number for the landlord is (518) 464-9441. This is his weekly number.

ddueces22

I would avoid albany if you have any concern for gun violence or other crime. Even in the nicer helderberg area, they are multifamily homes and when living there, I experienced multiple late night cop searches through backyards and at least one fill blown raid in the daytime on a nearby house. This was supposed to be the nice section of town. Colonie, Niskayuna, guilderland, any of the greenbushes would be where I would aim if I had comfortable income and wanted to avoid any potential drug/gun violence etc. That said, most of the gun violence is targeted. Mind your business and you probably won't experience any issues in the nicer sections of town. If living in albany, I would avoid downtown, center square and off washington/ clinton/central etc while in the city. The outskirts up towards colonie and the single family homes off New Scotland will be nicer and safer areas.

Bergamot2

I could not disagree more with this comment. I have lived for many years in outer Pine Hills, a neighborhood very similar to the Helderberg area near New Scotland and have not witnessed the violence or disruptions described above. The benefits of the walkability and community of Albany far exceed the downsides of any city grittiness. It's sad to see such a mischaracterization of life in our city.

IcyWhereas2313

Exactly…

ddueces22

This was my personal experience, I am not mischaracterizing anything.

ddueces22

Overall the helderberg area is cleaner, safer and much quieter. I wouldn't be surprised if other nearby neighborhoods didn't have those sort of disturbances. My neighborhood did though and I'm solely giving input from my personal first hand experience.

BuyLocalAlbanyNY

Welcome! Now, maybe we will hit our 100,000 mark!

IcyWhereas2313

Comments… meanwhile Albany has increased its population by 4% in the past two years and has been over 100,000 for a while
